God Only Knows
"God only knows what I'd be without you"
For artist Kim Lynch God Only Knows is a song that she has carried with her from the moment her father played it to her mother back in their 1960's London home and it's the song that resonated throughout her parents 65 years together.
Meanwhile in land locked Burundi, another couple are bought together from two very different cultures. Sharing the same hopes and prayers, they began their married life by blending a traditional wedding ceremony with the Californian song that spans decades - and continents - to touch souls wherever it's played.
And across the ocean, Erin Prewitt tells her love story and describes how tragic and unexpected circumstances meant she has had to learn to live out those iconic lyrics and discover what it means to be without the person you love.
With reflections from:
* Musician, Al Kooper
* Author, Barry Miles.
Producer: Nicola Humphries
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in April 2018.
SAT 00:30 Fu Manchu In Edinburgh (b00rt91z)
"Yellow Peril," "Celestial One" and "Devil Doctor": Sax Rohmer's evil genius, Dr Fu Manchu, traded under many aliases, but where was his doctorate from?
"I am a doctor of philosophy from Edinburgh, a doctor of law from Christ College, a doctor of medicine from Harvard. My friends, out of courtesy, call me 'Doctor'." - The Mask of Fu Manchu (1932)
Miles Jupp (also an Edinburgh University alumnus) investigates the hidden Edinburgh years of the criminal mastermind who fought a war against Western imperialism after learning his trade in one of the West's most esteemed Universities.
From the novels we can work out Fu Manchu must have studied in Edinburgh in the early 1870s.
So what do historical records teach us about his time there?
Back then, Conan Doyle was registered at the University Medical School, studying at the feet of Joseph Bell, the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes. Thomas De Quincey, the English Opium Eater, had died in the city a few years before but the network by which he sourced his laudanum was still intact, brought by Chinese Coolies from the Port of Leith to the drawing-rooms of the New Town.
There were Chinese students registered on the matriculation rolls of the University, some of them refugees from the Boxer rebellion, and the seamen's missions and city police reports make it clear that there was a thriving Chinese criminal network in Scotland's capital.
Could Fu Manchu have learned his criminal trade as an undergraduate at the city's university? Could his later dominance of Limehouse in London have been based on the contacts he made with Chinese gangs in Edinburgh?
What factual evidence exists to flesh out the experience of the fictional enemy of the West?
Producer: David Stenhouse

Mary McAleese, the former President of Ireland, charts her life story.
Beginning with a happy and boisterous childhood, growing up in the tight knit streets of Belfast in the 50s and 60s, before the start of the Troubles when her family was subjected to brutal violence.
At Queen's University, she studied law before becoming one of the first women called to the Bar, and laying the groundwork for her run for the presidency in 1997, months before the Good Friday Agreement was signed.
One of her last acts as president was hosting the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh when they made their historic state visit to Dublin.
Not one to rest, after her two terms as President of Ireland she studied for a doctorate in Canon Law to highlight the Roman Catholic Churches failure to protect its children from abuse.
Interwoven with intimate glimpses into family life, her memoir is written and read with wit and candour, Mary's story is one about the pursuit of peace and equality for all.
The music, ‘An Droichead’, was composed and performed by Liam O'Flynn for Mary McAleese's inauguration as President of Ireland.

Wild Music
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Wild Music, a collaboration between a poet and composer.
Scottish poet and writer John Burnside received a CD of Solan Goose by musician and composer Erland Cooper.
These "sonic postcards" of Erland's native Orkney are inspired by local dialect, birds, landscapes and the sea.
For John Burnside, it reconnected him with nature in a profound way.
The two meet for the first time on Orkney while Erland is working on the final album of his Orkney trilogy. Braving heavy rain and gale-force winds, Erland takes John to locations that inspire his work.
Scattered across the Orkney islands are some of the UK’s best preserved neolithic monuments, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
John feels a direct connection to the stone-age communities who lived here 5000 years ago, and a sense that those people lived really close to the earth, the sea and the sky. We visit the mysterious Ring of Brodgar, the neolithic village of Skara Brae, a sacred cairn, and the Bay of Skale. John responds by composing five new poems.
Sheltering from the storm, Erland and John entertain each other by swapping their favourite Orkney myths and legends - featuring seal people, a trip to faerie land and disappearing islands.
These stories also weave their way into both artists' work.

Episode 1
Enter the Carnival of Monsters, a bizarre and hilarious world of sketches, stories and characters.
Presented by the sinister Ringmaster.
This is master character comedian Colin Hoult's debut comedy series.
Meet such monstrous yet strangely familiar oddities as: Thwor - the mighty (but Leeds-based) god of Thwunder; Len Parker - Nottingham-born martial arts and transformers enthusiast; Anna Mann - outrageous star of such forgotten silver screen hits such as 'Rogue Baker', 'Who's For Turkish Delight' and 'A Bowl For My Bottom'; and many more.
Writers' Guild Award-winner Colin Hoult is best known for his highly acclaimed starring roles in 'Being Human', 'Life's Too Short', and 'Russell Howard's Good News', as well as his many hit shows at the Edinburgh Festival.
He has also appeared and written for a number of series for BBC Radio 4.
Producer: Sam Bryant.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in July 2013.
SUN 23:00 Mark Watson's Live Address to the Nation (b017chqv)
Passion
Mark Watson continues his quest to improve the world.
As broadcast live in November 2011- he invites the audience to join in via tweets and messages to work out how we can all make the world a better place.
He's nimbly assisted by:
Tim Key
Tom Basden.
This time, Mark looks at "Passion".
Passion encompasses some of our most human qualities: emotion, energy desire. But is it a dangerous thing? In their hit Desire, U2 sang: 'Desire!/Desire!' But that isn't hugely helpful, that's just repeating the word over and over again. So we'll go into a bit more detail.
We are all passionate about something, whether it's sex, personal satisfaction, or sexy personal satisfaction. Without passion, we're inert.
But with passion, we can sometimes be all too 'ert'. Where do we draw the line between normal passions, and being one of these guys like Othello, who let themselves down and kill a girl over a hanky?
Producer: Lianne Coop
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in November 2011.

If a Job's Not Worth Doing
Simon is totally convinced that he is in the right job and has a duty not only to stay there, but to do his job sloppily.

Then he has the awful, soul shattering realisation, and one which is something every person in Britain would be ashamed to admit, that he actually loves his job. Boris of course is in heaven at the thought of a soulmate at work, but Simon decides the only way he can go on is to learn to hate again.

The River Crossing
The annual migration of millions of wildebeest across the plains of Africa is one of Nature's most spectacular events, with rain and the search for food driving this migration.
Every year, wildebeest, zebra and antelope migrate clockwise around the Serengeti/Masai Mara ecosystem.
In January the herds can be found in Tanzania's Serengeti heading south into southern Serengeti where they calve.
By July the herds have reached western Serengeti and the Grumeti and Mara rivers.
The river crossings are their biggest challenge. Nile crocodiles, which can be as much as 5 metres in length, lie in wait, ready to seize their chance.
What ensues is a scene of carnage.
Wildlife sound recordist Chris Watson follows the wildebeest on their treacherous annual quest.

What does an artistic presence mean to a community?
Is it the character and lifeblood of an area - or the death knell for affordable housing?
Artist and writer Deborah Coughlin examines the impact of gentrification, through her own experience and that of other artists in different cities and locations from London to Berlin, New York to Margate.
When she left art college in 2000, Deborah couldn’t afford even the smallest bedsit in an area like Shoreditch, after artists like Tracey Emin had made the area desirable in the previous decade.
She found a place further out of central London - in Clapton, with its reputation as 'murder mile'. Now Clapton is one of the most gentrified areas in East London and she has moved on.
So where can artists, particularly those at the beginning of their careers, afford to live and work?
Deborah meets some in Margate, Kent, where there is a growing community of artists who are bringing the dying seaside town back to life. “There is space to grow in Margate, not just affordable studio space but space to think,” says one.
In New York she finds the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council was funded 40 years ago to breathe life into the financial district and talks to the artist Sophie Matisse great-granddaughter of Henri Matisse, who came to New York from Paris 25 years ago.
In Berlin, urban planner Dr Cordelia Polinna tells how the city uses rent and planning controls to keep accommodation affordable, but still fears the city will go "the same way as London".
Meanwhile, the Greater London Authority recognises the value of artists to the capital’s economy and tourism – and is trying to work with developers to build in studio space.

The Oak Woodland
Wildlife sound recordist Chris Watson captures the changing soundscape of an oak woodland over the four seasons.
Beginning in winter with the sounds of melting ice and a lone robin singing its plaintive melody, we travel through the seasons, noting not only the changes in the oak tree, but the wildlife which relies on the tree for food and shelter.
In spring the young leaves break free of their bud scales and the number of young caterpillars in the foliage can be so great that on a fine day their droppings or frass can sound like rain.
By late spring, oaks support huge populations of insects and this in turn attracts more birds; Great Tits, Pied Flycatchers, Redstarts and Tree creepers.
In early summer, the wood warblers, whose song has been likened to a small coin spinning on a marble slab, return and on warm summer nights the air is filled with the sound of oak bush crickets; which sing by drumming their hind leg against a leaf. They are accompanied by bats.
Autumn arrives and with it the storms. Undeterred, a storm cock continues to sing from its high perch. Jays are a common sight now, collecting large numbers of acorns. Wood pigeons too gorge themselves on acorns, whilst squirrels chase after one another up and down the Oak branches prior to mating.
As the days shorten and winter approaches, another year in the life of the oak comes to an end, accompanied by roe deer and foxes calling in the darkness of the shortening days.

Cima Verde
Wildlife sound recordist Chris Watson captures a journey in sound from the summit to the valley floor of Cima Verde in northern Italy.
We descend 10,000 feet, down the alpine slopes, across high pastures, through Alpine forest and down into the vineyards on the valley floor.
We hear an imagined soundscape high above the mountain in a place we cannot tread, but as we begin our descent we catch the sounds of passing ravens as they fly high above the summit scavenging for food.
A snow field melts into the sounds of a high pasture.
Further down, capercaillie are captured in a forest clearing, spirits dancing in the forest at first light, as these brightly coloured male birds perform their ritual dance to attract the females.
A tawny owl signals a change of location and a woodland chorus reveals resident birds as well as African migrants.
Our descent continues through orchards and vineyards where the clear silver song of a nightingale fills the air.
This nocturnal soloist is then joined in the first light of dawn by the forest chorus as we reach our journey's end.
Produced by Sarah Blunt.

The End of Coming Out?
The journey of coming out has long been a rite of passage for LGBTQ+ people.
For some, it’s an empowering opportunity to be true to oneself, friends and family.
With increased visibility of LGBTQ+ people, the argument goes, comes greater social acceptance. Coming out stories also help bind the community together.
But some LGBTQ+ people are choosing alternatives to the public coming out announcement.
They argue that a romanticisation of coming out within the LGBTQ+ community puts pressure on those for whom coming out remains difficult or even dangerous. Others question whether coming out publicly as LGBTQ+ is even necessary anymore.
Dustin Lance Black, the screenwriter of Milk, charts the history of coming out as LGBTQ+, from the early gay demonstrations of the 60s and 70s to the watershed coming out moments of celebrities including Sir Ian McKellen, Ellen DeGeneres, and Caitlyn Jenner.
Dustin also hears from a younger generation of LGBTQ+ people, to find out how social media has altered what it means to come out about their sexual orientation or gender identity. And he asks whether there will ever come a time when LGBTQ+ people no longer need to come out.

About Nightmare Relatives
This is the story of young, up-and-coming comedian Nathan Caton.
Nathan becomes the first in his family to graduate from University - only to opt for a career in comedy - much to his family's annoyance, who want him to get a 'proper job' using his architecture degree.
Each episode is designed to show the criticism, interference and rollercoaster ride that Nathan endures from his family as he pursues his career.
The episodes are a mix of Nathan's stand-up intercut with scenes from his family life.
So can Nathan persuade his family to support his career choice?
Mum is probably the most lenient of the disappointed family members. She loves Nathan, but she ain't looking embarrassed for nobody!
Dad works in the construction industry and was looking forward to his son joining him to work together in the same field. But now Nathan has blown that dream out of the window, Martin feels he must get Nathan back into getting a real job.
Grandma cannot believe Nathan turned down architecture for comedy. She didn't leave the paradise in the West Indies and came to the freezing United Kingdom for a better life so that her grandson could 'tell jokes!'
So with all this going on in the household, what will Nathan do? Follow his dreams... or give in?

The Lek
Wildlife sound recordist Chris Watson captures the sounds of an extraordinary dawn performance when he joins a group of male black grouse at a traditional courtship site.
It is one of the most extraordinary sound spectacles in Britain, and they occur every year from September until the birds breed in Spring; the peak time being April to May.
Male Black Grouse gather at traditional sites on upland moors and display to each other and to the females before dawn.
Hidden in a small wooden hut, Chris Watson captures the sounds of their remarkable theatrical performance, by burying microphones the previous evening and running long cables back to recorders in the hide.
The first males arrive at the lek site under cover of dark. They can be heard before they are seen. They fan out their black lyre-shaped tails to reveal white under-feathers as they strut back and forth to one another like partners on a dance floor. These displays determine the ranks of the birds to one another prior to breeding.
The dance is accompanied by a startling vocal display; bubbling sounds, far-carrying rolling coos, pops, gurgles and explosive ‘sneezes’ which once heard are never forgotten!
Females are attracted to the lek, listening and looking for a prospective mate!
As the sun rises, the performers drift away, leaving an empty stage, a circle of trodden grass in the heather and the echoes of their remarkable display.
Produced by Sarah Blunt.

THU 10:30 Really Happening! (b00vcqjf)
Back in the 1960s the Happening was what was really happening, on the international visual art scene.
Instead of people visiting galleries to look at art objects, audiences became involved in a series of events that made no distinction between observer and observed, and sometimes didn't seem to have a beginning, middle or end. Happenings paved the way for performance art and live art. And the 60s wouldn't have been half as groovy without them.
Early Happenings, like Allan Kaprow's 18 Happenings in 6 Parts, Claes Oldenburg's Snapshots From A City and Al Hansens' Requiem For W.C. Fields, inspired a generation of young artists, and grabbed the attention of the public.
Bob Dickinson re-imagines the Happening with contemporary artists and writers including RoseLee Goldberg, Ilana Mitchell, Andrea Cusmano, and Lorenzo Fusi.
He also investigates the way Happenings travelled around the world, to Asia and Europe, thanks to Nam June Paik in Korea and Japan, Adrian Henri in Liverpool, the Viennese Aktionists, Joseph Beuys in Germany, and Yves Klein in France.
As Happenings became part of popular culture, they became increasingly spectacular, and in 1967 Britain's biggest ever example of the activity was staged at Alexandra Palace in London - the 24 Hour Technicolour Dream. It was a high-point, in more ways than one, for the hippie counterculture, but it also marked the point when Happenings stopped being art.
We meet an eye-witness. Now, half a century after Happenings transformed the art scene, some contemporary artists, such as Tanya Bruguera, from Cuba, are revisiting and reviving several of Allan Kaprow's classic Happenings for a new audience - and we find out what happens when she tries them out on the streets and shops of Liverpool.

The Reed Bed
When you stare into a bank of reeds in early May you can see very little, yet hear so much inside, so sound recordist Chris Watson decided to try and capture the changing soundscape within the reeds over 24 hours. But tall phragmites reeds growing out of sodden ground and watery dykes make them impenetrable places by foot, so Chris sets up his microphones around the edge of the reed bed and prepares to listen from dusk until dawn.
Reed beds are magical places. The resident wildlife is either very well camouflaged or secretive and yet the sounds are extraordinary - from the booming fog-horn like calls of Bittern, which are very rarely seen but whose calls reverberate across the reed beds, to the pig-like squeals of the water rail (again a bird you are very unlikely to see but will hear).
Dusk is accompanied by the screams and clicks of swifts and swallows as they swoop back and forth catching insects on the wing.
As the temperature drops, the reed bed becomes a quieter place but just before dawn the silence is broken and the orchestra strikes up once again: Bitterns, reed buntings and chattering reed and sedge warblers as well as the reeling grasshopper warblers are the first to be heard. Then there's the bell-like high-pitched calls of Bearded tits, and finally a soloist as a cuckoo calls to attract a mate.
Produced by Sarah Blunt.

FRI 10:30 Herland (b06yfhqr)
Gender and science fiction? Writer Geoff Ryman on stories about women and men in future worlds. What might change?
In 1915 women could neither vote, divorce nor work after marriage, yet in that same year the American writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman envisaged a revolutionary world populated entirely by women who were intelligent, resourceful and brave. Her great science fiction novel Herland tells the story of three men who crash-land on an island where the men have died out; women reproduce by parthenogenesis.
Until Gilman's book was published most visions of utopia, though turning the world on its head, struggled to envisage a place where gender had changed. Fantastical machines could be imagined alongside marvellous advances in medicine and technology, but the idea of woman functioning fully in the new utopias was too much for many to imagine.
In this programme, the award-winning science fiction writer Geoff Ryman uses Herland as a starting point to ask why it's been so had to imagine a world where gender dissolves. Over the course of the programme, he will write his own short story, avoiding the pitfalls that have skewered many before him. The story called 'No Point Talking' will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 Extra and be available as a podcast.

FRI 23:15 Tom Mayhew Is Benefit Scum (m001946m)
Series 2
Cheap and Cheerful
Working-class comedian Tom Mayhew takes you on an autobiographical journey through the benefits system.
It's a stand-up series taking a wry sideways look at the prejudices that people have towards benefits claimants and turns those assumptions on their heads.
In this episode, Tom takes issue with the term “staycation” as he’s never been abroad in his life.
His stand-up explores how the working class holiday has always been closer to home.
Tom Mayhew is a critically acclaimed comedian, whose material about being working class – mixing the personal and the political, with the punchline-rate of a one-liner comic – sets him apart from any other act on the circuit.
Tom Mayhew Is Benefit Scum is based on Mayhew's acclaimed Edinburgh show I, Tom Mayhew, which transferred to a sell-out run at the Soho Theatre.
Written and Performed by Tom Mayhew
Featuring Chris Cantrill
Additional Material by Olivia Phipps
Produced by Benjamin Sutton
A BBC Studios production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in July 2022.
FRI 23:30 Talking to Strangers (b06zv3xm)
Episode 2
Comic monologues in which a range of characters find themselves engaging in that most un-British of activities: talking to a stranger.
Each piece is a character study: funny, frank, absurd, moving... Characters include a sex councillor who loves to draw, a spy who loves to share, a woman who likes to help too much ('I'm a serial helpist...'), a frustrated falconer, and a cheater who has to call her cheatee the morning after. And in this show, the listener themselves 'plays' the silent stranger in the piece...
Written and performed by Sally Phillips and Lily Bevan.
With guest stars:
Emma Thompson
Olivia Colman
Jessica Hynes
Steve Evets
Joel Fry
Mike Wozniak
Producer: Sam Bryant
A BBC Comedy production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in February 2016.
