SAT 00:30 The Wonderful Weightless World of the Flexidisc (b00sgbcr)
Long before the invention of the MP3, there was a way of getting hold of music, speech, and other audio sensations, free of charge - in the form of flexidiscs.
Originally developed in the 1930s to play at 78rpm, by the 1960s, seven-inch, 45rpm flexidiscs were so cheap to produce, and so light and bendy, that they were often given away free with a magazine.
In the Soviet Union, though, where flexidiscs were called roentgenizdat, and were recorded on disused medical x-ray sheets, the audio was usually of an illegal nature, such as jazz music, or, later, punk rock.
Their story features plenty of music, some of which is now valuable (such as the Rolling Stones Exit on Mainstreet Blues, given away with New Musical Express in 1972).
In tracking down the story of flexidiscs, presenter Paul Bayley meets collector Jez Randell, journalist Ian Shirley, and the novelist Tim Lott, who co-founded Flexipop magazine in the early 1980s (which gave away a free flexi with every issue).
Listen out for extracts from flexidiscs galore, including several advertisements for products as diverse as crisps, hair pieces and rat poison.
Plus music from big band jazz to beat groups to punk rock, as well as some of the most famous recordings made on flexidisc including Beatles fanclub records, Private Eye's satirical flexidiscs and the sound of humpback whales, from the world's biggest circulation flexidisc ever.
Producer: Bob Dickinson

SAT 03:00 Sandi Toksvig's Hygge (m000q8zk)
Series 1
Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock and Rose & Rosie
‘Hygge’ (pronounced hoo-ga) along with ‘tak’ (the word for ‘thank you’ that we learnt from watching Borgen and other Scandi dramas) is one of the few Danish words to have become known to us in the UK.
It’s a word that means comfort, contentment and cherishing the simple pleasures in life. In lifestyle magazines it’s faux fur throws, cups of hot cocoa and scented candles; but to the Danish it has simpler and less commercial roots.
As these cold winter nights draw in after a difficult year of scant comfort, it feels like we all need some hygge and legendary Dane, Sandi Toksvig, will do her best to bring it to you.
Deep in the Danish countryside in her cosy wood cabin, Sandi will explore the concept of hygge and the Danish way of life and welcomes celebrity guests who join her in front of the open fire to explore what brings them hygge.
In this episode, BBC Stargazing's Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock helps point out the constellations we can see when there is no light pollution and Youtubers Rose & Rosie try to embrace digital detoxing and the joys of glamping.
Additional material from Simon Alcock and Charlie Dinkin.
Producer: Julia McKenzie

SAT 03:30 Burning the Books by Richard Ovenden (m000m60l)
5. The Future
The future and the preservation of information that relates to all of us and the way we live.
A 3000 year journey through the destruction of knowledge and the fight against all the odds to preserve it.
Richard Ovenden, director of the Bodleian Library, explains how attacks on libraries and archives have been a feature of history since ancient times, but have increased in frequency and intensity during the modern era.
Libraries are far more than stores of literature, through preserving the legal documents such as Magna Carta and records of citizenship they also support the rule of law and the rights of citizens.
Today, the knowledge they hold on behalf of society is under attack as never before.
At once a powerful history of civilisation and a manifesto for the vital importance of physical libraries in our increasingly digital age, Burning the Books is also a very human story animated by an unlikely cast of adventurers, self-taught archaeologists, poets, freedom-fighters - and, of course, librarians and the heroic lengths they will go to preserve and rescue knowledge.
Richard Ovenden demonstrates fundamentally how knowledge of the past still has so many valuable lessons to teach us and we ignore it at our peril.
Abridged by Siân Preece.
Concluded by Anthony Head.

In 1965 the BBC Radio Times described the play's author:
"Alfred Jarry, 1873-1907, [French] poet, eccentric, bohemian who scandalised his contemporaries. He is now regarded as one of the forerunners of modern [avant-garde] drama. He created King Ubu [Ubu Roi], a monstrous image of the greed and cruelty of humanity. Ubu Cocu is the third and last of his cycle of Ubu plays. It came to light as late as 1945, and was published [in first English translation] by Cyril Connolly in 'Horizon' [magazine]".
In 2021, Sir Paul McCartney chose this very 1965 production whilst appearing on BBC Radio 4’s This Cultural Life. Talking about the impact of radio upon his early life, he said:
“When I was driving up to Liverpool from London, I heard Ubu Cocu, which is Alfred Jarry - this is lesser known – he’s known for Ubu Roi – but Ubu Cocu was great, and it was a great BBC production on the radio, and I listened to it all the way up…..really got well into that, and the whole thing about Jarry and pataphysics, which is a non-science that he invented. So it ended up in the lyrics for one of my songs”.
The song was The Beatles' Maxwell’s Silver Hammer ["Joan was quizzical, studied pataphysical / Science in the home...."].
No name logged for the rather posh announcer.
Adapted for radio, and produced by, Martin Esslin.
First broadcast on the BBC Third Programme in December 1965.

A funeral focuses everyone's mind in Wadenbrook.
Sheila Hancock narrates the bittersweet adventures of the residents of a small town in Northamptonshire.
Written by Katherine Jakeways.
As is well-known: Yorkshiremen wear flat caps and Essex girls wear short skirts; Liverpudlians are scallies and Cockneys are wideboys. Northamptonians gaze wistfully at these stereotypes and wish for an identity of any kind and a label less ridiculous than Northamptonians. Northamptonshire, let us be clear, is neither north, nor south nor in the Midlands. It floats somewhere between the three eyeing up the distinctiveness of each enviously.
Katherine Jakeways gives Northamptonshire an identity. And she waits, eagerly, for her home-county to thank her. And possibly make her some kind of Mayor.

6. Shipwrecks
**** This programme was suggested by Paul Buttle as part of BBC Radio 4 Extra’s All Request Weekend ****
The outbreak of war brings prosperity and change for the islanders with shipwrecks, foreign sailors and the threat of conscription.
Memoirs and reminiscences of life growing up on The Blasket Islands off Ireland's Dingle Peninsula. The Islands were evacuated after World War II, but prior to that 150 inhabitants lived a traditional, rural life.
Maurice O'Sullivan was born on the Islands in 1904, before being fostered in Dingle and then returning to his family home on the Irish speaking Island.
It captures a young boy's growth to early manhood on the great Blasket, "a truly Gaelic island which lies north-west off the coast of Kerry". With stories of his friends, family, father and grandfather.
'Did you never hear how the life of man is divided?' says Maurice's grandfather, 'twenty years a-growing, twenty years in blossom, twenty years a-stooping, and twenty years declining."
Written by Maurice O'Sullivan and abridged by Ann Rees-Jones
The story continues from the first Omnibus episode featured in 4 Extra's ALL REQUEST WEEKEND.

7. Gone Fishing
**** This programme was suggested by Paul Buttle as part of BBC Radio 4 Extra’s All Request Weekend ****
School is stopped and Maurice goes lobstering with his dad. He could not be happier - until the weather turns.

The Men in the White Coats
Professor Andrea Sella on the shifting image of the scientist in popular culture, from Victor Frankenstein to Iron Man via victorious post-war boffinry and megalomanical Bond villainry.
The monster unleashed by Mary Shelley in her 1818 tale of gruesome gothic horror was in many senses not the creature itself, but the image of its careless creator. The recklessness of the lone scientist whose blind ambition fails to foresee the societal and practical consequences of his discovery or invention.
Throughout the last 150 years, the scientists in our science fictions have embodied the contemporary societal attitudes to science itself, sometimes in celebration, but often as a cartoon of our fears. At the same time professional scientists and science communicators have tried to share their work with wider audiences in an effort to democratise and enliven the endeavour.
However, these two approaches haven't always been in synchrony.
Produced by Alex Mansfield.

9. Adventure
**** This programme was suggested by Paul Buttle as part of BBC Radio 4 Extra’s All Request Weekend ****
It's 1927 and the island has gone to ruin. Maurice seeks a new life and pursues a new career in the capital.

Series 1
Prof Brian Cox and Zoe Lyons
In this episode Professor Brian Cox finds comfort in physics, piano playing and mulled wine and comedian Zoe Lyons who would like nothing more than to clear out ditches all day.
Additional material from Simon Alcock and Charlie Dinkin.

Killing Me Softly with His Song
"Strumming my pain with his fingers... Singing my life with his words..."
Killing Me Softly with His Song is a song about the pleasure and embarrassment of being seen. The feeling that someone has reached into your deepest, most private feelings, and laid them bare. It's a song about a singer, and about what music can do and a love song that feels at once happy and sad.
The song was a huge hit in two different generations. It won Grammy Awards for The Fugees in 1997 and for Roberta Flack in 1974.
Ray Padgett, author of Cover Me: The Stories Behind the Greatest Cover Songs of All Time, unfolds the layers of the song's history as a famous cover of a famous cover.
The musicologist Nate Sloan explores what the song does harmonically, oscillating between major and minor chords to create a sense of uncertainty and longing.
Lori Lieberman tells the story of the Don McLean concert that inspired her lyrics for the song, that she was the first to record as a young singer-songwriter in 1972.
It's a song that transports Tiff Murray back to the hot New York summer of 1996, when the Fugees version blared out everywhere. For her it was the soundtrack to falling in love while far from home. It's also a love song for Julie Daley, but now with a sharp edge. Dr Robin Boylorn listened to the Fugees version as a self-conscious teenager and felt a flush of recognition; Ben heard it the Christmas he first came to the UK from South Africa, played by a busker early one morning in Covent Garden as the first snow he'd ever seen began to fall; and Perminder Khatkar has treasured the song since it played in the delivery room during the birth of her first child.
Produced by Mair Bosworth.

FRI 10:30 In Search Of Beauty (b00p016j)
Erin O'Connor, whose beauty defies convention, discusses this knotty subject-area. What is beauty? Where do our ideas about beauty come from? How is our life-experience affected by how we look?
When Erin was growing up she was convinced she was ugly. She would dart across the road diagonally so she wouldn't draw attention to her nose by crossing in front of stationary cars. She was so self-conscious about her flat-chest that she would regularly wear two padded bras.
But one day she was told she was beautiful, scooped up by the modelling industry and presented as the uber-elegant catwalk queen, sought after and richly rewarded. What did they see in her that she would never have seen in herself? Beauty?
With the help of renowned facial-reconstructive surgeon Professor Iain Hutchison, who has treated people with severe facial disfigurement; and Professor of Children's Literature, Kim Reynolds who has studied the way beauty is regarded in traditional stories, Erin explores various opinions and experiences of beauty.
Erin also goes behind the scenes at London Fashion Week, to an event called 'All Walks Beyond the Catwalk'; it used a wide range of models - both in size and age - as a way to broaden the range of catwalk models used at such influential events.
