Series 19
Plaisir d'Amour/Can't Help Falling in Love With You
Marianne Faithfull recalls the classical French Love song which went on to inspire a 1960s hit record by Elvis Presley.
'Plaisir d'Amour' somehow found its way through 18th century orchestration (Hector Berlioz) and 1960's folk revival, to an unexpected re-invention as Elvis’s 'I Can't' Help Falling in Love with You'.
Written in 1784 by Jean-Paul-Égide Martini, the song muses on the pleasures and pains of love and was inspired by a poem in Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian's novel 'Célestine'.
For 17 year old Marianne Faithfull, it was a song of innocence, recorded in a tiny booth in London’s old Decca studios whilst happily pregnant with her first child.
Meanwhile, author Julia Donaldson and husband Malcolm busked it on the streets of Paris. This was in the summer of 1969 and police hid in alleyways, still fearful of students following the 1968 riots.
Inspired by Elvis, West Point Military Academy Freshman Andrew Scott learnt to pick the tune on guitar – helping him win the heart of his wife.
For Henry and Christine Wallace, it summed everything up "It was what I was looking for, someone to share my life and the words 'take my whole life too was in tune with what I wanted'.
Producer: Nicola Humphries

SAT 00:30 Ravi Shankar: Sitar Hero (b00rmrpt)
Nitin Sawhney explores the life of one of the greatest musicians the world has ever seen.

The man who first brought Indian classical music to an international audience was once compared to Mozart by the great violinist Yehudi Menuhin. But it wasn't an easy journey to success - it took an arduous process of study and practice. Nitin meets his hero to discuss how he did it.
With contributions from:

SAT 03:00 Prepper (m0002b8v)
Series 1
Hell Is Other People
Survival courses are road tested!
Trump. ISIS. The Courgette Crisis. Signs of civilisation’s fragility are all around. No wonder the Doomsday Clock just nudged closer to midnight.
In this fearscape, more and more ordinary people are wondering how they’d cope if everything we take for granted (law and order, access to healthcare, iceberg lettuces in Sainsburys) was taken away.
Preppers - a large and rapidly growing global community - have taken this thought one step further. They’re actively skilling-up, laying down supplies and readying themselves for the end of the world, in whatever form it comes. Indeed, a prepping shop just opened in Newquay. And if people in Cornwall are prepping, it’s time to worry.
Imagine if Woman’s Hour made a podcast about preparing for the end times. Prepper follows neurotic, debt-ridden Rachel and hard-as-nails ‘Churchill in Spanx’ Sylvia, working class Mancunians who prep and podcast, sharing knowledge with their community, and showing off just how Armageddon-ready they are.
Told through their podcasts from Sylvia’s garage and featuring ‘apoco-tips’, ‘end of days drills’ and interviews with preppers from around the world, Prepper comically explores how two mismatched women live with the possibility of the end of days, and how they bond over their determination to survive. And fend off zombies.

Jasper’s plans come to a head as the climax to the story is played out at the top of the cathedral tower.
Dickens’s last, unfinished, novel is set in a phantasmagorical drug-fuelled landscape where nobody is who or what they say they are.
Whilst writing it, Dickens was driving himself towards exhaustion and death through obsessive public performances of the most lurid parts of Oliver Twist - revisiting his first successful novel whilst struggling with his last, fearful that his creative well is drying up and that this story would never be brought to a close.
Written by Charles Dickens and dramatised by Mike Walker.
Narrated by Dickens’s daughter Kate, witness to her father’s final weeks, and whose fascination with this story leads her to look into its unsolved conclusion to find clues about her father’s character.

What can these captions - designed to illuminate the sound world of a film or TV show - reveal about how we conceive of sound itself?
Raymond speaks to fellow D/deaf poets and artists to explore their experiences navigating the spaces between the words. Are closed captions just a simple act of transcription - [Doorbell rings] - or a more subjective act of translation? How might we reimagine them?
[Sound of something invented]

It’s Christmas and all is fine until Edwin - the young man who appears to have it all, a beautiful and charming prospective bride, the promise of an engineering job in Egypt - disappears. Presumed murdered.
Could it have been impetuous Neville Landless? Or Edwin’s Uncle Jasper?

Dickens’ last, unfinished, novel is set in a phantasmagorical drug-fuelled landscape where nobody is who or what they say they are.
Whilst writing it, Dickens was driving himself towards exhaustion and death through obsessive public performances of the most lurid parts of Oliver Twist - revisiting his first successful novel whilst struggling with his last, fearful that his creative well is drying up and that this story would never be brought to a close.

Episode 1
Relationships have come and gone but life continues in Wadenbrook and Ken and Keith have a birthday to celebrate.
Sheila Hancock narrates the bittersweet adventures of the residents of a small town in Northamptonshire.
Written by Katherine Jakeways.
As is well-known: Yorkshiremen wear flat caps and Essex girls wear short skirts; Liverpudlians are scallies and Cockneys are wideboys.
Northamptonians gaze wistfully at these stereotypes and wish for an identity of any kind and a label less ridiculous than Northamptonians. Northamptonshire, let us be clear, is neither north, nor south nor in the Midlands. It floats somewhere between the three eyeing up the distinctiveness of each enviously.
Katherine Jakeways gives Northamptonshire an identity. And she waits, eagerly, for her home-county to thank her. And possibly make her some kind of Mayor.

TUE 10:30 Field Notes: The Irishman Who Invented the Nocturne (b07bbk4g)
Alistair McGowan travels to Dublin to explore the sensational life of his musical hero - the 19th century Irish pianist and composer John Field.
Born in Dublin in 1782, Field was a child prodigy who left Ireland at an early age to become apprentice to the great Italian composer and piano maker Clementi.
Clementi took Field on a tour of Europe and Russia, demonstrating his considerable talents and showcasing Clementi's pianos.
Field was to live in Russia for the rest of his life and Russia welcomed Field with open arms - he became the darling of high society, as well as one of the most celebrated and influential pianists of his day.
His playing and his invention of a new kind of piano piece, the nocturne, were to influence Chopin, Liszt, Schumann and Mendelssohn.
Interviewees include pianists John O'Conor, Finnuala Moynihan, Finghin Collins and architectural historian Finola O'Kane.
Produced by Emma Harding.

TUE 22:00 Ahir Shah's Seven Blunders of the World (m0026ndm)
Episode 2
Inspired by an email from his 74-year-old father, comedian Ahir Shah introduces us to the The Seven Blunders of the World.
In 1925, Mahatma Gandhi published an article in the journal Young India, outlining what he called the 'Seven Social Sins'. They were wealth without work, pleasure without conscience, knowledge without character, commerce without morality, science without humanity, religion without sacrifice, and politics without principle.
100 years on, the world is a very different place (this was written on a computer, for crying out loud!). Yet, Ahir reckons Gandhi's century-old list of the great societal blunders still feels relevant today. Could they teach us anything going forward?
Join Ahir (and sometimes his dad, who started this whole thing), as he explores three more of these blunders through his trademark combination of philosophical inquiry, political vigour, and sweet gags.
Created and Performed by Ahir Shah

Starring Meera Syal and Vikram Shah

This second volume of Sarah Kendall's Australian Trilogy, is one show in three parts. A collection of seemingly unconnected stories and memories, which, together, form a meditation on luck, survival and hindsight.
Scrolling backwards and forwards in time to different moments in her life, over the three parts Sarah creates an intricate montage, demonstrating the interconnectedness of life.
In this second part, Sarah is trying to be more positive. She tells us of a trip to the vets with the family's pet hamster, of a car accident she was in as a child, and of a day at a clinic with her son. And we find out that hamsters originate from Syria.

The Wellness Phenomenon
Today there's a booming wellness industry, including luxury spas and hotels as well as personal trainers and supplements, claimed to be worth over $4 trillion a year.
Online at least, self-care seems to revolve around buying stuff – luxury oils, face creams, scented candles, face rollers, bath bombs, silk pillows, cleansing soaps and stress-relieving teas. Or we can cherish ourselves by paying someone else for a service, from a yoga session to a delivery of artisan chocolates.
With the help of the archives Claudia Hammond explores where the idea of wellness came from.
She discovers its roots in the WHO's definition of health and in the counter culture of California in the 1960s, when the residents of Marin County took to hot tubs and peacock feathers.
Claudia looks at the thorny relationship between wellness and medicine and those who look after or study our health.
There's a Wellness Newsletter that has been produced in Berkeley since 1984 that weighs up the scientific evidence for and against new treatments, and many doctors offer complementary therapies alongside conventional medicine.
Yet there is no published research to support the benefits associated with some wellness products.

4. Fearing the Worst
With John back in England and her son Joe still missing, Anna begins to fear the worst.
Four years ago, Anna and John's marriage was floundering. To make matters worse, John began a disastrous affair with their couples counsellor, which he later regretted.
Now, to escape the past, they've started over in rural Southern France - a place they once visited on holiday, but don't know very well at all.
It's an act of folly, maybe, but necessary for their survival – or so it seemed at the time. But their dream of a new life in France is shattered when their 16 year old son disappears and they find that they, and each of their house guests, are suspects in what the gendarmes have decided is a possible murder enquiry.

Gerald Durrell
Former England footballer Graeme le Saux champions the life of writer, broadcaster and conservationist Gerald Durrell.
Graeme and presenter Matthew Parris are joined in the studio by Durrell's widow, Lee.
Gerald Malcolm Durrell (1925 - 1995) was a pioneering conservationist who took on the established "zoo community" by emphasising the need to preserve endangered species, rather than just repeatedly dip in to the natural world for more animals to amuse and entertain.
His work culminated in the creation of his own zoo on Jersey. It was there that a teenage islander called Graeme le Saux helped out in the gorilla enclosure, before moving on to play at left back for Chelsea and England.
Producer: John Byrne
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in September 2011.
THU 10:30 The Tale of Jimmy Scott (p03xkr3j)
Mary Anne Hobbs presents the story of jazz singer Jimmy Scott, one of the 20th century’s most overlooked vocalists.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1925, James Victor Scott’s life was filled with loss, pain, struggle and setbacks from the start. It would all reflect in his music, yet he remained upbeat and positive until his death in 2014.
Mary Anne learns about the man who came to prominence as Little Jimmy Scott, sang with the Lionel Hampton Band in the late 1940s and released his biggest hit - Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool - but was un-credited on the record. It set up a long list of un-credited performances, bad contracts and difficult dealings with the label who signed him. So why was a singer with such talent left largely unknown outside of the industry?
As a teenager, Jimmy was diagnosed with Kallmann syndrome, a genetic condition which affects the production of hormones, meaning he wouldn’t go through puberty and would be left with his trademark high pitched singing voice. But the syndrome led to questions around his androgynous appearance and gender defying vocals.
In 1963 it seemed as though Jimmy’s luck would turn a corner when he collaborated with Ray Charles to make the critically acclaimed Falling In Love Is Wonderful – cited by many as one of the greatest jazz love albums of all time. However, the album was withdrawn due to contractual problems. Jimmy moved back to Cleveland and began finding work as a shipping clerk, hospital clerk, and busboy throughout the 1970s and 80s.
It would take until 1991 for Jimmy to resurface and experience the attention and respect that was missing in his early career.
Mary Anne Hobbs speaks to Jimmy's wife Jeanie Scott, biographer David Ritz and record producer Tommy LiPuma.

THU 22:00 Aurie Styla: Tech Talk (Omnibus) (m0026nh9)
1: Loading, Please Wait...
Stand-up comedian Aurie Styla, a 90s nerd, takes an autobiographical journey through the history of tech.
We begin in the early 90s, with the tinny sound of the Nintendo Game Boy and his first 13-inch television which only worked if asked very nicely, and he re-wired to show all the channels available - in total, four - proceeding through to mobile phones and the school playground black market for cooler ringtones.
Since the days of his first console, the Sega Master System – featuring the often frustrating Alex Kidd In Miracle World – Aurie has seen technology transform in a manner that would have been hard to believe in the 90s. This show charts his personal relationship with machines, looking at the past (computer games that you had to load from cassette tapes), the present (houses that are lit and warmed via apps on your phone, cars that drive themselves without you) and the future (AIs that tell you how to dress and what to eat for dinner, and superior intelligences that command your every move whether you want to object or not).
Technology has moved on rapidly, from being a fun sideshow to the bedrock of our understanding of human life. Aurie guides us through this landscape with infectious wit, taking time to remember the awkward interface of MSN Messenger while also negotiating the modern culture of having to check with a virtual assistant before you turn your lights off. A warm, human show about the way the world has become less and less warm and human, celebrating the march of tech while being appropriately terrified of it.

The Kit In Your Head
Trump.

FRI 10:30 Hunt/Lauda (b01rfy5f)
Racing driver Vicki Butler-Henderson recalls one of sport's most intense rivalries.
How swashbuckling British playboy James Hunt took on Formula One World Champion Niki Lauda, a man who by the August of 1976 would be fighting for his life in a German hospital.
Motorsport legends Murray Walker, journalist Nigel Roebuck and Niki Lauda himself tell how Hunt, in his British McLaren, chased the Austrian's scarlet Ferrari in a 200mph season-long duel from Brazil to Japan. It wasn't long before the handsome, blonde, badly behaved Hunt became Britain's number one sporting hero, filling the front and back pages of international newspapers in the scorching summer of '76 with his outrageous car control and equally outrageous personal life.
Thrilling archive and first hand testimonies from three-time world champion Lauda and famed Austrian commentator and author Heinz Pruller tell how, in the August of that year, Ferrari's golden boy crashed heavily at the notorious Nurburgring circuit in Germany. His car burst into flames, and left Lauda, stricken with terrible burns, to receive the Last Rites.
What followed remains one of sport's most heroic chapters as Lauda went from death's door to returning to the track, battle scarred and bleeding, taking the fight with Hunt to the final race of the year and setting up a gladiatorial showdown amid monsoon conditions at the Japanese Grand Prix.

FRI 22:00 What? Seriously?? (m0026swh)
2. Beaks and Bloody Battles
In this episode, Dara and Isy are joined by the Aussie comedian Rhys Nicholson to learn about a humbling event in Australia's military history - with some diverting conversations about foxes, films, and flightless birds.
What? Seriously?? is a new podcast which combines comedy with quirky history, hosted by Dara and Isy who unravel an extraordinary real-life tale each week with the help of a celebrity guest.
The stories are definitely true, but also kind of unbelievable at the same time - the sort of stories that make you go ‘What? Seriously??’ when you hear them, but you resolve to tell them in the pub the first chance you get.
Across the series, Dara and Isy will be joined by I’m A Celeb winner Georgia Toffolo, the Aussie comedian Rhys Nicholson, the broadcaster Stuart Maconie, Master Chef star Louisa Ellis, Miles from The Traitors, the comedian Richard Herring, the astronaut Helen Sharman, and Slow Horses star Chris Chung.
‘What? Seriously??’ with Dara Ó Briain and Isy Suttie and special guest Rhys Nicholson
Format co-developed by Dan Page. Story compiled by Gareth Edwards and Dan Page.

Suitable for Framing; Diary Extracts
The globetrotting, trash-picking, aisle-rolling storyteller shares more words of wit and wisdom:
* Suitable For Framing - a story about the significance of art in David's childhood family home -
* Additional extracts from David's book Theft By Finding, a compilation of diary entries from 1977-2002.
With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America's pre-eminent humour writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that he is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.
David Sedaris's first book, Barrel Fever (1994), which included The SantaLand Diaries. was a critical and commercial success, as were his follow-up efforts, Naked (1997), Holidays on Ice (1997) and Me Talk Pretty One Day (2000). He became known for his bitingly funny recollections of his youth, family life and travels, making semi-celebrities out of his parents and siblings.
David Sedaris has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. A feature film adaptation of his story C.O.G. was released after a premier at the Sundance Film Festival (2013). He has been a contributor to BBC Radio 4 since 1996.
