Silver Badge
Things are taking off for our socially awkward and neurotic part-time comedian now he is a fully fledged internet sensation. Michael is asked to attend the Webber’s Comedy Awards, but he is only needed to present an award, not to receive one. Even so, this is the first time Michael has been invited to such a prestigious industry event and wife Roberta insists he attends - as long as she can come too.
Roberta is more excited about the awards ceremony than Michael, as she spies a chance to network and create new opportunities for his burgeoning comedy career.
And the stress of Michael’s day job as a copywriter at a kitchen worktop company intensifies after an ominous corridor encounter with a new recruit.
As Michael’s anxiety goes full throttle, even a call from 1920s cabaret star and war heroine Josephine Baker fails to calm his nerves and he gives the most explosive presentation speech in the history of the Webber’s Comedy Awards. Or does he?
As Roberta attempts to become Michael’s manager and thrust him into the limelight outside the social media where he has become successful, will he break through into television and radio? It’s only Episode Two so this is still in your hands. Listen to the show. He’s been trying for 20 years with only cult success until now. So give it a sympathy listen, if nothing else. That would be good.

5. The Last Days
In Wendy Moore's book about the military hospital set up during the First World War, the final days of the hostilities approach., but it is "darkest before dawn".
This is the story of the trailblazing women who set up three military hospitals during WWI and is a tribute to their brilliant and courageous work.
Louisa Garrett Anderson and Flora Murray were the two doctors who put their campaigning for women's suffrage to one side, so that they could turn their attention to the war wounded. They made their mark by setting up and running a hospital on Endell Street in the heart of London, where over the course of the war they treated 26,000 wounded soldiers. However, when the war ended, Murray and Anderson's achievements were once again side-lined, and the story of Endell Street was forgotten.

Near his family home was a forest which he visited frequently, but didn't hunt for fossils there because he knew the rocks were too old to have any postcards of early life embedded in their layers.

Facing extreme racial prejudice, she brawled under the influence of bathtub gin and had tumultuous love affairs with men and women. Gospel's uplifting and rejoicing sound is world famous, a multi million-dollar music genre that in many ways has ended up the beating heart of American popular music. But can gospel be gospel if it entertains and makes money as well as praises the Lord?
In this first episode Alvin examines gospel's journey from the church to the charts through the music of Thomas Dorsey, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Mahalia Jackson and Sam Cooke. Now considered some of gospel's greatest artists, these early singers all met with strong criticism from the church as they took their songs from the sacred world into the secular.
Alvin also reveals how other gospel performers in the first half of the 20th century struggled fulfilling their religious obligations whilst battling with the temptations of life on the road.

Every year since 2013, the poet, broadcaster and author Lemn Sissay has arranged a Christmas dinner for people aged 18-25 who have left the care system and have no one with whom to have Christmas dinner. No one to give presents or receive them. No-one on the other end of the cracker.
This is not a charity. It isn't even an organisation. It's a project Lemn undertook because he understands how it feels - at 18 he was released from a children's home and given an empty flat in Wigan, with no-one in the world who had known him for longer than a year.
Lemn Sissay’s Social Enterprise is a four-part series for BBC Radio 4, considering what these dinners have taught him about charity, social enterprise, and people, through stand-up, interview and poetry.
This week he explores the idea of time - with the help of Jill Mortimer from Age UK, Anna Chojnicka from the Global Entrepreneurship Network, and comedian and podcaster Deborah Frances-White.

2. Going Global
Financial educator Alvin Hall explores how American gospel music became a global force through commercialisation.
Gospel's uplifting and rejoicing sound is world famous, a multi million-dollar music genre that in many ways has ended up the beating heart of American popular music. But can gospel be gospel if it entertains, makes money and praises the Lord at the same time?
Alvin explores how this American religious music genre has been affected by both commercialisation and secularisation.
In this second part, Alvin explains how gospel became a global force in popular music.
He reveals how Aretha Franklin's marriage of pop to gospel sold millions of records, introducing gospel to a world audience in the process. He looks at the rise of the gospel choir in the 1970s and 80s and discovers how it increasingly became a money-making industry.
He also meets leading gospel stars Kirk Franklin and Donnie McClurkin to ask whether they think today's gospel stars have been affected by money and celebrity.

Anthony Blunt: A Question of Retribution?
In November 1979, Margaret Thatcher exposed the British art historian Sir Anthony Blunt as a Soviet spy. She revealed that Blunt - openly gay and a former intelligence officer for MI5 - was a member of the infamous Cambridge Five spy ring who had traded secrets with Soviet Russia during the Second World War.
As one of the country's leading academics and a former Surveyor of the Queen's Pictures (a role for which he received his knighthood), Blunt's influence reached to the top of the establishment. In a Britain polarised by the Cold War, Blunt's exposure provoked an unprecedented media storm and turned him into a national hate figure.
Blunt had shared 1,771 top secret documents with Russia during the war and played a key role in the escape of Donald Maclean, Guy Burgess and Kim Philby, fellow members of the Cambridge Five. Ironically, Stalin's regime was so distrustful of everything they received that it is questionable how much impact the information that Blunt shared actually had.
David Cannadine, the current President of the British Academy, reassesses Blunt’s career before his exposure as well as the fallout afterwards. He uncovers the controversy which erupted over Blunt's academic position after he was revealed as a spy, and how the academic community came to terms with the revelation of a traitor in its midst.
Eventually stripped of his knighthood and expelled from academic life, Blunt's rapid downfall was driven as much by a hostile disdain for his position as a privileged left-wing intellectual, and by a rampant homophobia in the press that labelled him a 'treacherous Communist poof'.
Can artistic reputations survive political actions or personal disgrace, and what issues does Blunt's story raise for institutional loyalty and professional identity?
David Cannadine speaks to many of Blunt’s former students and those directly involved in the raw and personal clash of ideals over Blunt's position, some of whom remained sympathetic to him as a great intellectual and great teacher, and saw themselves as defenders of intellectual liberty against a political witch-hunt.
With Dawn Ades, Christopher Andrew, Miranda Carter, Richard Davenport-Hines, Neil MacGregor, Charles Moore, Charles Saumarez Smith, Deborah Swallow, Sarah Whitfield and Richard Verdi.

Cheesy Strings
His Room Next Door videos are getting tens of millions of views online, a mention in the House of Commons and plaudits from highbrow cultural commentators so, by rights, Michael should be drowning in big money offers.
But, in reality, he’s sat at his desk writing copy for a kitchen worktop company worrying about the restructuring consultant they’ve brought in. Getting the axe would be catastrophic for Michael and his family.
This strange position is heightened when A-list British actor Emily Mallaby contacts Michael to invite him to a political dinner party at home. She is starting a new movement to shake up Westminster and wants the famous Room Next Door Man, who lampoons cabinet members so mercilessly, to spearhead the campaign.
At the same time, Michael’s wife Roberta is channelling her energy into hustling for Michael as a distraction from having to make a work friend redundant. She secures him an audition for a potentially lucrative commercial. OK, the role is to play a cheesy string, but a gig’s a gig and shows that Michael should take Roberta’s ambitions to be his manager seriously.
Unfortunately, he fails to acknowledge her skills and they have a massive falling out, just as he needs his wife’s advice on the work situation. Michael tries to enlist his eldest son, Sam’s help to extract that advice, but he’s useless. Perhaps Daddy is expecting too much of a nine-year old?
Both the audition and the political dinner party test Michael’s patience and integrity but fortunately Peter Curran is on hand to reassure and unnerve him in equal measure. Can Michael emerge with his principles intact and what will happen when Roberta’s ex-colleague Alexandra turns up at her doorstep while Michael is gallivanting with the A-Listers?

5. An Unmarked Grave
Scotland’s National Poet Jackie Kay examines the rumours and controversies around the death of Bessie Smith. She was driving to a gig with her partner when his car crashed. Her second husband tries to claim he was still in her life and gets money from royalties. Years after Bessie's first funeral - Janis Joplin helps to pay for a headstone.
Orphaned by the age of nine, Bessie Smith sang on the street to support her siblings and was swept into travelling shows as a young woman. Facing extreme racial prejudice, she frequently brawled under the influence of bathtub gin and had tumultuous love affairs with men and women. She also sold hundreds of thousands of records and became a genuine superstar.
“The first time I saw Bessie Smith, it really was like finding a friend…”
Mixing biography, fiction, music and memoir, the Makar remembers the electric thrill of identification when, as a young black girl growing up in Glasgow, she was first gifted the music of the Empress.

Feed the Birds
'Feed The Birds' was written by composers Richard and Robert Sherman for the 1964 film Mary Poppins.
Richard recalls how the song was a Walt Disney favourite and long after the film was over, Walt would call him down into his office in the late afternoon, gaze out of the window and say 'Play it.'
Karen Dotrice, who played Jane Banks in the original film, describes the experience of hearing the song sung by Julie Andrews.
Lawyer Eli McCann describes how re-watching Mary Poppins a few years ago, one snowy afternoon in Salt Lake City, was a turning point in his life, and teacher Marie Barteld remembers her love of 'Feed The Birds' as a child, and how she took the words of the song literally - much to her mother's consternation.
