The Skye Boat Song
The Skye Boat Song brings back a wealth of childhood memories for many.
The words "Speed Bonnie Boat Like a Bird on the Wing" tell the story of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s escape to the Isle of Skye - dressed as a maid - after defeat at the battle of Culloden.
Originally written by Sir Harold Boulton and Anne MacLeod back in the 1870's, we explore the song’s beauty and how it continues to touch people's lives across the world in very different ways.
The Queen's Piper, who has played it in happy and sad times, recalls his rendition outside the Queen's window and leading Princess Margaret's cortege.
A New Zealand artist shares his memories of time spent with his father, and the sound of him whistling the song on their way home as dusk fell. A sailor from the Isle of Skye, describes his connection with the spirituality of piece and the Loch on which he sails.
Acclaimed violinist Tasmin Little shares her own arrangement of the piece and explains why it works so well musically.
An Australian mum, tells how important this song has been in connecting with the two girls she has adopted from China.
Gaelic singer Maggie MacInnes tells the history of the piece.

SAT 00:30 James Baldwin’s Last Amen (b04cfdhm)
The work of the American writer James Baldwin gained a new audience in the months following the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests in Europe and the USA.
His observations on race, power and black identity, featured in clips from 1960s chat shows, were widely shared on social media. A spirited performance in a 1965 Cambridge Union debate titled The American Dream is at the Expense of the American Negro is now considered a landmark moment.
But in the late 1980s, Baldwin's light was fading, and he was living a quiet life in the south of France when theatre producer and director Anton Phillips of Carib Theatre decided to revive his 1954 play The Amen Corner at London's Tricycle Theatre. It transferred to London's Lyric Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue - becoming the first all black production to transfer from Fringe to the West End.
At Phillips' invitation, Baldwin made the trip to London to meet the cast in final rehearsals and see the production open.
During the visit he stayed with one of the cast, Clarke Peters, and gave Joan Bakewell what would be one of his last interviews. He died a few months later in December 1987.
Clarke Peters recalls that landmark 1987 production, his relationship with "Jimmy", and the lasting legacy of an extraordinary and insightful writer.

Me & Robin Hood by Shôn Dale-Jones
**** This programme was suggested by Chris Natural as part of BBC Radio 4 Extra’s All Request Weekend ****
One man channels his childhood obsession with the mythical outlaw, Robin Hood, by making a stand against our stress-filled, unequal, consumer-driven society.
Shôn first met Robin Hood back in the autumn of 1975, as a seven-year-old-boy, living on the Isle of Anglesey. But what would it mean to be a modern day Robin Hood?
How could you take the principles of robbing from the rich and giving to the poor and apply them to the complexities of our global economy? And what’s so great about Robin Hood anyway?
Shôn Dale-Jones’s inventive piece of sonic storytelling magic.
This is a story about the growing gap between rich and poor, radicalism and the challenge of knowing that sometimes you have to do something wrong in order to do something right.
It’s a comic story about how Shôn’s childhood hero re-enters his life when he needs him most.
It began life as a one-man stage play, produced by Hoipolloi and the Royal Court.

Looking back over the first decade of her diary, Mrs Dale shares two years of 'despair and happiness' - 1954 and 1955.
In 1948, the BBC Light Programme broadcast the first episode of a radio serial.
It chronicled the lives of the Dale family – doctor Jim, plus children, Bob and Gwen - as recounted from the daily diary of Mrs Mary Dale. They live in Parkwood Hill - a fictional middle-class London suburb.
For the following 21 years, (over 5,500 episodes) more than six million listeners tuned in to hear the everyday affairs of this much-loved family and their friends
Ellis Powell takes the leading role, but the BBC dismissed her in 1963, and she died a few months later. She was replaced by singer and dancer, Jessie Matthews OBE who played Mrs Dale until the soap opera - renamed ‘The Dales’ - was axed by BBC Radio 2 in 1969.
Each episode began with Mrs Dale setting the scene as she spoke aloud, writing her daily entry into her diary. She was often to be heard exclaiming: 'I’m rather worried about Jim.'

Until five months ago, Liz was a hard-nosed child-protection social worker.
Today she doesn't know who she is, except that she's on suspension, hiding from the press, dosed up on SSRIs ... and that there's someone shouting her name in the supermarket.
It's an irony of child protection, that if you've been a social worker long enough to remove two children from a woman at birth, that means you may be the one constant in her life she can trust.
So when Tamsin tracks down her old social worker Liz for help, she doesn't care that Liz is on suspension and forbidden from talking to her. Or that Liz is the current hate figure of the national press, after the violent death of a child on her caseload.
Tamsin just wants help.
Should Liz ignore her? Or is time to break the rules?

Harassment Architecture
The homeless community is targeted by features in the cityscape that are invisible to many of us.
Many argue that anti-homeless architecture enforces a certain type of ‘acceptable’ use of public space.
Benches, bus stops and back alleys have been redesigned - leading some to say that homeless people are harassed into living in evermore hidden and dangerous places.
A culture of resistance on the streets is fighting back.
Charlston draws from his first-hand experience of being homeless and disabled to reflect on how he and others like him are instructed, and often forced, to navigate urban environments.
He questions the purpose and value of hostile design through recalling his own testimonies, and the hardship he has encountered. He now uses architecture as a tool in campaigning for radical solutions.
New Storytellers presents the work of new radio and audio producers, and this series features the winners of the 2023 Charles Parker Prize for the Best Student Radio Feature.
Harassment Architecture was made by Goldsmiths MA student George Ruskin, and the judges commented,
“What is excellent about this piece is the perspective. It makes the listener see the world from one – singular – point of view, with wonderful stereo illustrations to bring the words to life.”

TUE 09:00 Do Gooders (m0021b8q)
1. The Team Player
Garrett Millerick’s Do Gooders is a new ensemble sitcom that takes us behind the charity curtain and mines the numerous frustrations that come with trying to ‘do good’ on an industrial scale. With Frank Skinner, Fay Ripley, Lisa McGrillis, Ahir Shah and Ania Magliano.
The series follows the exploits of the fundraising events team at a fictional mid-level charity, The Alzheimers Alliance. Fundraising for this kind of mid-table organisation comes with its own unique set of challenges, be it setting up eye catching events, courting celebrity endorsement or juggling the inter charity politics.
And while certainly not languishing on the lowest rungs of the charity league table, Alzheimers hasn’t got the dazzling sheen or the pulling power of a cancer charity, nor does it capture the public’s sympathies in the way lifeboats or guide dogs do.
If Cancer Research is Coca-Cola, Alzheimers Alliance is Lilt. A cracking drink, but they’ve got to work hard to remind people they exist - or face total extinction.
Episode One - The Team Player
Clive has one day to prove to Harriett that he can be a team player, or risk losing his status as a manager. Lauren and Ken battle it out over the new hot desking arrangements and Gladys introduces the new hire Achi to the peculiarities of life at The Alzheimers Alliance.

TUE 09:30 New Storytellers (m001p7lk)
Out at Sea, Out of Mind
Take a deep dive into the sonic realms of the sea. With natural soundscapes recorded beneath the surface, this is a journey of discovery into how important sound is for all sea creatures - from whales, dolphins, and porpoises, to the smallest invertebrates, sound is an essential part of their being.
Since the discovery that whale song can be heard across entire oceans, many researchers have been exploring how human-produced sounds and frequencies may affect communication among the mammals. But as we on the surface can’t hear the sounds beneath the sea, we can be oblivious to the devastating effects some of these noises can have on underwater life. As humans we bring to the vast arena of the oceans much louder sounds than would occur naturally on the evolutionary scale - shipping, sonar used for underwater navigation, and the loud seismic gun testing blasts produced when surveying the ocean bed for oil and gas.
Do we need to start listening to our oceans?
With contributions from: Professor Volker Deecke, marine pollution consultant Tim Deere-Jones, researchers Sarah Dickson, Jordan Burgess, Jo Garrett, and writer Jay Richardson.
This series of New Storytellers features the winners of this year’s Charles Parker Prize 2023 for the Best Student Radio Feature. Out at Sea, Out of Mind was produced by recent University of Sunderland MA Radio, Audio and Podcasting student Lottie Steele and the feature is, in the words of the judges, “skilfully creative” and “expertly montaged so that there is a great sense of flow”. And they admired the “beautiful use of sound and music. A shocking and important programme.”

TUE 10:30 The Women Who Wrote Rock (b07428bt)
Kate Mossman tells the story of the long-overlooked female pop and rock writers of the 1960s.
As a music journalist herself, when Kate entered the profession she found herself surrounded by men - men who had very definite ideas about how it should be done... writing for monthly magazines that were aimed at men and covering artist who were mainly men. The whole industry of writing about 'serious' popular music seemed to have been established in the late 1960s and the mid-1970s with the writer-characters of Rolling Stone and our own New Musical Express.
But there was a time before all this - a time when the newly invented teenagers were finding their feet... and a new kind of journalism was emerging to chronical the rapidly changing time. A journalism spearheaded by women.
There was Nancy Lewis, who wrote for Fabulous and the NME; June Harris, who wrote for Disc, then went to New York and contributed to Rave (as well as marring legendary rock agent and promoter Frank Barsalona); Maureen O'Grady who began her career as a music journalist at Boyfriend and progressed onto Rave, where she also joined Dawn James. And the doyennes of them all was the Evening Standard's Maureen Cleave, to whom John Lennon claimed that the Beatles were bigger than Jesus.
Kate Mossman meets them and celebrates the tone of their writing that was so fascinatingly different from rock journalism as we came to know it, and yet captured all the confusion, excitement and social changes of the time.
Produced by Paul Kobrak.

Our Dad
Growing up in the shadow of violence and alcohol abuse can leave you with questions. So, what happens when a child becomes an adult and tries to answer them?
Weaving through displaced memories, this documentary explores the experiences of four siblings with one distinct focus - their father. When time and context shifts, what remains is shame, uncertainty, and the inexorable search for clarity. An upended audio mystery, this piece follows the life of an abusive man from the perspectives of four of his children. The narrator, switching between the roles of daughter and journalist, takes a gruelling journey into the past, re-discovering what she thought she knew about the person she once loved most.
"This is a story. Well, it did really happen. But this is the kind of story that you wish didn’t. This is the story of our dad."
New Storytellers presents the work of new radio and audio producers, and Thea Rickard's feature won the Gold Award of the Charles Parker Prize for the Best Student Radio Feature in 2023. Boy, Oh Boy, He's Going Down
Sean Street examines those moments where Radio forgets itself, when laughter, alcohol or sheer emotion well up.
Traditionally the wireless has been somewhat formal, but occasionally reporters have been overwhelmed by what they're witnessing, contributors so passionate in argument and commentators overcome by mirth - or drink - that the conventions are dropped.
Then communication comes pure, direct and unselfconscious: a Battle of Britain dogfight sounds like sport, sport like war, a naval fleet becomes fairyland, the author of a fairytale about rabbits attacks another guest.
Hear the moments when Radio reveals far more than what is being said.

Dave Gorman comes up with a new cliche to replace 'Curiosity Killed the Cat, while Natalie Haynes tells us what the Cockney rhyming slang 'a Basil' refers to.
Lloyd Langford asks the meaning of 'dumpoke' from the 1903 dictionary, 'Hobson Jobson - A Glossary of Anglo Indian Colloquial Words and Phrases' (a book which Susie Dent claims is 'a very good read').

Series 12
Joe Lycett Interviews Katherine Ryan
After being interrogated last week by Sara Cox, Joe Lycett turns interviewer and invites his chosen guest Katherine Ryan into the Chain Reaction hotseat.
Chain Reaction is the talk show with a twist where one week's interviewee becomes the next week's interviewer. John Cleese was first in the hot seat back in 1991 and since then, a procession of big names from the world of comedy and entertainment including Jennifer Saunders, Jarvis Cocker and Eddie Izzard have helped continue the chain.
Joe Lycett is a stand-up comedian who some know as "the parking fine man" from 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown while others celebrate him for any number of acclaimed live tours and festival shows that have delighted the British comedy viewing public in recent years.
Joe's chosen guest is Katherine Ryan, the Canadian stand-up star and presenter who is perhaps best known for her live stand-up work - 'Glam Role Model' and 'Kathbum' - as well as appearances on BBC2's Episodes and Taskmaster on Dave. Katherine fields questions on subjects as varied as being compared to Joan Rivers and the secret of happiness, all via a mini-detour to address her hatred of bread.

THU 09:30 New Storytellers (m001p7bf)
The Final Fanfayre
It's 1974 and, half a decade after The Beatles and Elvis Presley dominated the charts, a new generation of artists were capturing the hearts and minds of the nation’s young female fans - The Jackson 5, The Bay City Rollers, and above all David Cassidy and The Osmonds.
The Final Fanfayre is a different kind of fan story. Fanfayre were a band of Osmond fans made up of two sets of teenage sisters. They played Osmond songs and loved the group so much that, when an opportunity to audition to be their European Fanclub band arose, the four youngsters from Middlesbrough applied - and won!
It's 2023 and, 50 years on, broadcaster Paul Gambaccini reflects on fandom in the mid-70s, as sisters Ali and Bev reminisce about their time in Fanfayre and what it was like to be part of the group and travel to a London studio to record their single, Donny's Girl.
New Storytellers presents the work of new radio producers and this series features the winners of the Charles Parker Prize 2023 for the Best Student Radio Feature. These awards are presented every year in memory of the pioneering radio producer Charles Parker who produced the famous series of Radio Ballads with Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger. The series is introduced by Charles’ daughter, Sara Parker, an award-winning radio producer in her own right.
The Final Fanfayre was produced by Dom Brown who is studying MA Radio, Audio and Podcasting at the University of Sunderland. The judges said of his feature, “What a blast!” “An Interesting subject, well put together” and “Evocative of the time. This simple piece works brilliantly because of the sheer power of the women’s reminiscences.”
Produced by Dom Brown.

He was a 19th century historian, poet and activist. He founded the modern Eisteddfod – at a gathering atop London's Primrose Hill – uncovered medieval poems, an ancient alphabet and numerous manuscripts that stand as a lodestone of Welsh literary culture and decisively shaped modern Wales's idea of itself.
The thing is: it was mostly fiction - lies and forgeries.
Gareth Gwynn sets out on the trail of Ned of Glamorgan, aka Iolo Morganwg, to find out whether a modern Welsh man can really be an honest Welshman when his national traditions are based on falsehood. Along the way he can't resist the temptation to create a few traditions of his own, leading down some blind and dangerous philosophical alleys.

Song To The Siren
"Long afloat in shipless oceans": So begins Song To The Siren whose lyrics were inspired by Homer's Odyssey and the story of the Sirens who lured unwitting sailors to their deaths on the rocks. There is something so ancient and enchanting about the Siren that appeals to us.
For the wildlife sound recordist Chris Watson listening to the song reinforced his belief that the eerie calls of seals at night were in fact the original siren voices whose sound and shape convinced sailors that they were being called by strange mer-creatures. His collaboration with poet Alec Finlay led to Chris recording two singers singing to each other across a bay in the North East of England "Here I am waiting to enfold you". Song To The Siren fills him with melancholy.
The image of lives lost at sea is one that Meg Bignell strongly associates with the song and when a family friend drowned in the ocean surrounding her native Tasmania she was comforted by the version by This Mortal Coil and Elizabeth Fraser's haunting vocals.
Larry Beckett regrets the song's association with death as he intended the lyrics to tell a more hopeful story about love. However Tim Buckley's death at 28 and the tragedy of his son Jeff's drowning in 1997 weigh Song To The Siren with a heavy sorrow that comforts those who have lost a loved one.
Former Olympic runner Anthony Famiglietti lost his childhood friend Rob in an accident when they were both 21. Rob introduced Anthony to the music of John Frusciante whose version of Song To The Siren astounded him when he first heard it. It has a profound effect on him and it speaks to him of fathers and sons communicating across time and space, when one has passed on as in the case of Tim and Jeff Buckley, and Anthony's friend Rob and his father, the man who inspired Anthony's career as a runner.
When Director Zack Snyder lost his daughter he stopped working on his Justice League film but when he completed it four years on he wanted to include Song To The Siren. Singer Rose Betts who recorded it for him explains how she immersed herself in the song to express the love, longing, grief and loss that it evokes.
Musician and singer Dominic Stichbury sets out the musical elements that make this such a simple yet devastatingly powerful song.

Series 1
1. How It All Ended
Glaswegian comedian Scott Agnew is obsessed with thoughts about his own mortality - well you would be too if you had died three times.
This is part one in a trilogy of tales that gets into the gritty and grim goings on that nearly saw Scott pushing up the daisies. From Scott's time as a journalist, gate crashing a funeral, being told he was fat on a dating app, the day he caught covid, to his cardiac arrests. These stories are far from forlorn fables, but rather are bursting with colourful, lively characters who have shaped Scott's life and helped him along the way.
In this three part series, Scott reflects upon his multiple dances with death, all the while searching for an epiphany he has yet to find. This is more than just a life story, this is Scott's death story.

FRI 22:30 Matt Berry Interviews... (b0b5xrsy)
Series 1
Uri Geller
Matt Berry presents a series of interviews with the greats of the stage, screen and music world.
Matt interviewed Uri Geller at his home in 1974 just as the self-proclaimed psychic's star was on the rise.
Geller wasn't keen at first, but eventually agreed and was very welcoming. He was becoming quite a global star back in the early 70s and there was much fascination, not to mention the odd sideways glance, at the very mention of his name.
Matt actually met him first on the dance floor of Tramp's night club a year earlier but Geller said he had no memory of it. Not wanting to let such a snub deter Berry, he soldiered on and within this interview managed to get a real sense, of the real Uri Geller.
Written, performed and edited by Matt Berry.
Producer: Matt Stronge.
A BBC Studios production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in June 2018.
