SATURDAY 29 JUNE 2024

SAT 00:00 Soul Music (b05qgcgv)
Series 20
Hallelujah
Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' took him years to write.
It originally had as many as 80 verses. Recorded for his 'Various Positions' album, it was almost ignored when first released in 1984.
Only Bob Dylan saw its true worth and would play it live. John Cale eventually recorded a version which was heard by an obscure musician called Jeff Buckley.
The song has been covered by hundreds of artists including Rufus Wainwright, kd lang and Alexandra Burke.
We hear from those whose relationship with the song is deep and profound.
Singer Brandi Carlisle listened to it over and over again as a troubled teenager; it became a soundtrack to James Talerico falling in love and Jim Kullander made a connection with the song after the death of his wife.
Series about pieces of music with a powerful emotional impact.
Producer: Sara Conkey
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in April 2015.
SAT 00:30 Home Sleuth (m001zpll)
The original web sleuth
The body of a young woman is found wrapped in a tent in Kentucky, US, in the 1960s. Nobody knows her name. The police can’t identify her, so the crime goes unsolved. She becomes known as ‘Tent Girl’. But 30 years later, a local man called Todd Matthews becomes obsessed with finding her true identity and has as a new tool at his disposal: the internet. Who was the Tent Girl?

After Todd’s story, hear producer Alice Fiennes in conversation with true crime expert Rachel Monroe. They discuss how people like Todd used the internet in the 1990s to investigate crimes, and the perils of online communities identifying the wrong suspect like the chaos in the post-Boston Marathon bombing.

Home Sleuth brings you true crime stories from citizen investigators taking justice into their own hands.

An unidentified murder victim, a schoolteacher’s suicide, the brutal dismembering of animals. The police have investigated these cases, but our sleuths aren’t content with the answers. They begin their own search for justice.

Over five episodes, we hear the gripping story of the role that home sleuths play in investigating crimes and mysteries, from the original internet sleuth in the 1990s through to present-day true crime YouTubers.

In most true crime podcasts, a presenter tells you where the story is going. This time, we break the mould. The sleuths present their own stories. After each episode, the series producers sit down with true crime expert Rachel Monroe to examine what the case can tell us about the wider world of true crime. Why do ordinary people dedicate themselves to these investigations? Is it ethical? What does it say about our obsession with true crime?

Home Sleuth is a Furrowed Brow production for BBC Sounds.

Created and produced by Alice Fiennes and Poppy Damon.
Associate producer - Brenna Daldorph.
Sound Design by John Scott.
Fact-checking by Arthur Gompertz.
Editorial consultation and additional sound design by Nick Van Der Kolk at Wingdog Audio.
Commissioned by Luke Eldridge and Nicky Birch for BBC Sounds.

With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America's pre-eminent humour writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that he is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.
David Sedaris's first book, Barrel Fever (1994), which included The SantaLand Diaries. was a critical and commercial success, as were his follow-up efforts, Naked (1997), Holidays on Ice (1997) and Me Talk Pretty One Day (2000). He became known for his bitingly funny recollections of his youth, family life and travels, making semi-celebrities out of his parents and siblings.
David Sedaris has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. A feature film adaptation of his story C.O.G. was released after a premier at the Sundance Film Festival (2013). He has been a contributor to BBC Radio 4 since 1996.

Actors
June Brown
EastEnders actress June Brown is castaway by Kirsty Young.
June Brown is best known today for her role as the long-suffering chain-smoking Dot Cotton (now Dot Branning) in the BBC TV soap EastEnders. She arrived on a three month contract in 1985 and is still in the show. She was nominated for a BAFTA in 2008.
She celebrates her 90th birthday in February 2017 and has no intention of retiring as acting "keeps her alive".
June was born in Suffolk and brought up in a music-loving family. Towards the end of the Second World War, she joined up, choosing the WRNS where she worked as a cinema operator showing training films and newsreels to the sailors.
She did some acting during that time and after a brief and unsuccessful job in an office, she was one of very few chosen to receive a classical training at the Old Vic Theatre School. From there she joined the Old Vic Theatre Company where she worked with such greats as Edith Evans, Laurence Oliver and Albert Finney. Her roles included Lady Macbeth and Ibsen's Hedda Gabler.
She had five children in relatively quick succession and continued acting on TV and the London stage, often putting her youngest in a pram and going in the guard's van on the train to the theatre.
Throughout her time on EastEnders she has occasionally ventured away to direct or take part in other television series.
In 2009 she stripped down to nothing as Jessie in the stage production Calendar Girls. She was 82.
She was awarded an MBE for services to drama and charity in 2008.

TUE 10:30 Glad to Be Grey (b071x87c)
Professor Mary Beard is a distinguished Cambridge Classical scholar with a string of highly-regarded books on Ancient Rome to her name, so it's slightly irksome to her that she is almost better known for her long grey hair.
In this highly-authored documentary, Mary Beard investigates a growing reluctance to embrace grey hair.
Starting in the Mayfair salon of "hair colourist to the stars", Jo Hansford, she's informed that her hair is "dreadful" and given a personal consultation by Jo herself about how and why she should colour it.
In favour of choice and the fun of colouring hair, (she has always hankered after pink streaks), Mary is particularly disturbed by the pressures in society for women to conceal their age.
It's not just about women, though. Mary has recently come to recognise that far more men now colour their hair, but why won't any of them talk to her about it? Eventually, fellow Cambridge Classicist, Professor Simon Goldhill, agrees to "come out" on air. In defending his use of colour and challenging Mary's own choice, he gives her a philosophical run for her money.
Ultimately, Mary has to admit the paradox of making a radio programme about grey hair, so she turns to a surprise, high-profile television presenter to learn more about the pressures on women in the public sphere to colour their hair.
Concluding that ageism may be the new "glass ceiling", Mary insists upon the right to be both an "enfant terrible" and also an "eminence grise".
Produced by Beaty Rubens.

The teenage private eye
Cara leads a double life. As an unassuming teenager from a quaint market town, nobody suspects her of being a private investigator. With an uncanny ability to blend in and spy gadgets to help her, she uncovers wrongdoings. Cara seeks truth and justice, but wrestles with the consequences of finding it.

After Cara’s story, producer Alice Fiennes talks with true crime expert Rachel Monroe, about what TV shows, books and media teach us about crime and the prominence of women like Cara in fictional detective stories.
