SATURDAY 22 JUNE 2024

SAT 00:00 Soul Music (m000q9f5)
Sunshine on Leith
Sunshine on Leith was released in 1988 but didn't become the big hit The Proclaimers had hoped for.
However it has endured and become an anthem of love and a celebration of life.
It is the song played at Hibs FC matches and has come to symbolise the sense of community felt by supporters. Margaret Alcorn recalls how she and her husband were involved in the Hibs Supporters Club organising and taking part in social events for local people in Leith.
When their club came under threat from a merger with rival Edinburgh team Hearts she and her husband worked tirelessly to preserve it - and when her husband passed away the song was played at his funeral.
Musician Ross Wilson grew up in Leith and is also a passionate Hibs Supporter. The feelings of comfort and solidarity he experiences at home games led him to create his own version of the song which he performed with a choir to celebrate one of his favourite songs that reminds him of home and that he calls true soul music.
Melinda Tetley's family would always sing Proclaimers songs at home in Edinburgh while her three children were growing up. But when her teenage son fell ill with leukaemia, the song took on a special significance for them culminating in a spontaneous joyful singalong on a walk along a lochside.
The human rights lawyer Clive Stafford-Smith is a big fan of The Proclaimers and remembers seeing them perform Sunshine on Leith in New Orleans just days after 9/11 to an audience of exactly eight people - half of whom were the prosecuting team in a Death Row murder case he was defending.
Musicologist Dave Robb who toured with The Proclaimers explains the song's lasting emotional appeal and spiritual beauty.

* The Silent Treatment
* Extracts from his diaries
With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America's pre-eminent humour writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that he is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.
David Sedaris's first book, Barrel Fever (1994), which included The SantaLand Diaries, was a critical and commercial success, as were his follow-up efforts, Naked (1997), Holidays on Ice (1997) and Me Talk Pretty One Day (2000). He became known for his bitingly funny recollections of his youth, family life and travels, making semi-celebrities out of his parents and siblings.
David Sedaris has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. A feature film adaptation of his story C.O.G. was released after a premier at the Sundance Film Festival (2013). He has been a contributor to BBC Radio 4 since 1996.

It seems that no-one knows quite what the terms are for the secession. Arthur couldn't care less. He's apolitical and just enjoying watching the ducks.
Suddenly a soldier arrives, dragging a tape across the ground, marking out the new border. He barges between the two young lovers. Now one is on one side of the new border, and one on the other!
Arthur's attempt to cross is met with a stun-gun jolt from the guard, who has as little understanding of the new rules as the couple. He just knows he has been trained to be suspicious of everyone who isn't from 'this country' which now includes Arthur!

Jonathan Miller: Lost Memories
Broadcaster and director Sir Jonathan Miller, one of the greatest minds of his generation, believed the most important cognitive function humans possess is memory. Without it, you can’t learn or know who or where you are. Without a functioning memory, you wouldn't be able to recognise, recall or retrieve a thing. In fact, without it, you simply wouldn't exist.
Jonathan died of Alzheimer’s in 2019 before he got to make the one series he’d always wanted to present on the workings of human memory.
His son William Miller, embarks on a journey to uncover the story of his father’s life as told through his extensive archive, and pieces together the documentary Jonathan was going to make with his producer, Richard Denton, that would have explored memory – what it is, where it is and how our memories define us. He talks to family and friends who share their own memories of Jonathan, including his Beyond the Fringe co-star Alan Bennett. And he seeks to learn more about Alzheimer’s, the disease that killed his grandmother and father and still haunts his family today.
Writer and television producer William Miller is the author of the bestselling memoir about growing up with his father, Gloucester Crescent: Me, My Dad and Other Grown Ups.
Producers: Eve Streeter and Richard Denton

The song has been covered by hundreds of artists including Rufus Wainwright, kd lang and Alexandra Burke.
We hear from those whose relationship with the song is deep and profound.
Singer Brandi Carlisle listened to it over and over again as a troubled teenager; it became a soundtrack to James Talerico falling in love and Jim Kullander made a connection with the song after the death of his wife.

FRI 10:30 Home Sleuth (m001zpll)
The original web sleuth
The body of a young woman is found wrapped in a tent in Kentucky, US, in the 1960s. Nobody knows her name. The police can’t identify her, so the crime goes unsolved. She becomes known as ‘Tent Girl’. But 30 years later, a local man called Todd Matthews becomes obsessed with finding her true identity and has as a new tool at his disposal: the internet. Who was the Tent Girl?

After Todd’s story, hear producer Alice Fiennes in conversation with true crime expert Rachel Monroe. They discuss how people like Todd used the internet in the 1990s to investigate crimes, and the perils of online communities identifying the wrong suspect like the chaos in the post-Boston Marathon bombing.

Home Sleuth brings you true crime stories from citizen investigators taking justice into their own hands.

An unidentified murder victim, a schoolteacher’s suicide, the brutal dismembering of animals. The police have investigated these cases, but our sleuths aren’t content with the answers. They begin their own search for justice.

Over five episodes, we hear the gripping story of the role that home sleuths play in investigating crimes and mysteries, from the original internet sleuth in the 1990s through to present-day true crime YouTubers.

In most true crime podcasts, a presenter tells you where the story is going. This time, we break the mould. The sleuths present their own stories. After each episode, the series producers sit down with true crime expert Rachel Monroe to examine what the case can tell us about the wider world of true crime. Why do ordinary people dedicate themselves to these investigations? Is it ethical? What does it say about our obsession with true crime?

Home Sleuth is a Furrowed Brow production for BBC Sounds.

Created and produced by Alice Fiennes and Poppy Damon.
Associate producer - Brenna Daldorph.
Sound Design by John Scott.
Fact-checking by Arthur Gompertz.
Editorial consultation and additional sound design by Nick Van Der Kolk at Wingdog Audio.
