South Africa
Writer Nadia Davids explores what Shakespeare means in pre and post apartheid South Africa.
Nadia Davids talks to a variety of South Africans including legendary actor John Kani and former political prisoner Eddie Daniels about what Shakespeare means in the country today.
She finds Shakespeare being performed as a way of discussing race, violence against women post Pistorius, and the current political crisis around President Zuma, but also that his presence in South Africa's cultural landscape is contested by some as part of the debate about decolonising education.
For others such as school pupils from a township outside Cape Town and for a group of homeless men in Johannesburg, Shakespeare offers an opportunity to grow and develop as well as reflect on their own lives.

The globetrotting, trash-picking, aisle-rolling storyteller shares more words of wit and wisdom:

* Extracts from his diaries
* Answering audience questions
With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America's pre-eminent humour writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that he is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.
David Sedaris's first book, Barrel Fever (1994), which included The SantaLand Diaries. was a critical and commercial success, as were his follow-up efforts, Naked (1997), Holidays on Ice (1997) and Me Talk Pretty One Day (2000). He became known for his bitingly funny recollections of his youth, family life and travels, making semi-celebrities out of his parents and siblings.
David Sedaris has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. A feature film adaptation of his story C.O.G. was released after a premier at the Sundance Film Festival (2013). He has been a contributor to BBC Radio 4 since 1996.

Jess talks to Crossfit champion and 2022's sixteenth fittest woman in the world - Lucy Campbell - about muscularity, finding a community and why even a sport which has trumpeted equality from its inception still has a way to go when it comes to the sexualisation of the women at the top of their game.
And she demonstrates why, on the radio, it's sometimes hard to tell the difference between the sound of a woman lifting a heavy weight, and the sound of a baby elephant on a steam train.

THU 10:30 In Search of Southern Hospitality (b075mlth)
The hospitality of the Southern States of America is renowned the world over and the phrase “Southern Hospitality” represents a time honoured tradition of warmth, kindness and selfless hospitality to strangers.
But what does Southern Hospitality mean today? Can a stranger still expect a genuinely warm welcome or is all that remains a cynical marketing tool perpetuated to improve the dogged image of the south?
Comedian Rich Hall knows a few things about this region of the world. He grew up south of the Mason Dixie Line but, having called London home for the past 20 years, the south is now a very long way away.
In this programme, Rich heads into the deep south to see if he can still find the "ma’am" saying, cap dipping people of old.
Rich talks to Professor Charles Wilson about the origins of southern hospitality. He finds himself drinking on the porch with some southern belles, puts the theory of southern hospitality to the test at the side of the road and also finds out what happens when you poke an alligator with a big stick!

“I was diagnosed with Asperger’s/autism aged five. By age seven I knew I was very different, I had got used to the isolation, my inability to break through into the world of talking about football or Minecraft was not tolerated. Then came the bullying. Nature became so much more than an escape; it became a life-support system.”

Sunshine on Leith
Sunshine on Leith was released in 1988 but didn't become the big hit The Proclaimers had hoped for.
However it has endured and become an anthem of love and a celebration of life.
It is the song played at Hibs FC matches and has come to symbolise the sense of community felt by supporters. Margaret Alcorn recalls how she and her husband were involved in the Hibs Supporters Club organising and taking part in social events for local people in Leith. When their club came under threat from a merger with rival Edinburgh team Hearts she and her husband worked tirelessly to preserve it - and when her husband passed away the song was played at his funeral.
Musician Ross Wilson grew up in Leith and is also a passionate Hibs Supporter. The feelings of comfort and solidarity he experiences at home games led him to create his own version of the song which he performed with a choir to celebrate one of his favourite songs that reminds him of home and that he calls true soul music.
Melinda Tetley's family would always sing Proclaimers songs at home in Edinburgh while her three children were growing up. But when her teenage son fell ill with leukaemia, the song took on a special significance for them culminating in a spontaneous joyful singalong on a walk along a lochside.
The human rights lawyer Clive Stafford-Smith is a big fan of The Proclaimers and remembers seeing them perform Sunshine on Leith in New Orleans just days after 9/11 to an audience of exactly eight people - half of whom were the prosecuting team in a Death Row murder case he was defending.
Musicologist Dave Robb who toured with The Proclaimers explains the song's lasting emotional appeal and spiritual beauty.
