A majestic sea eagle with its vast wingspan swoops incongruously over the Lowland hills and a peregrine starts to mimic the eagle’s flight pattern.
He visits Colonsay and Shetland, where he encounters cuckoos, snipe, eiders, oystercatchers, choughs, yellow hammers, starlings, corncrakes, red-throated divers and some basking grey seals into the bargain.
And he takes in the fertile small island of Lismore in Loch Linnhe.

6. Holiday on Ice
Alexandra Harris tells the story of how the weather has written and painted itself into the cultural life of Britain. When the rivers froze: frost fairs and merry making on ice.
The winter of 1608-9 was so cold that the Thames froze over. The great highway of London was at a halt. Then, tents were being thrown up and barrels of ale rolled out. Soon there was bowling and skittles, musicians were playing, there was dancing, drinking, eating. The out-of-work ferrymen set aside their oars and took charge of the impromptu carnival.
A British History in Weather is a celebration of the British climate and a life story of those who have lived in it.

Alexandra Harris tells the story of how the weather has written and painted itself into the cultural life of Britain. Why does British rain fall on British people?
Imagine a history told in rain. From King Offa's Mercia, to Saint Swithin, Milton and Dr Johnson. How do they feel? Do they go indoors? Does the rain they see an ill omen or a blessing? It never rains in the same way twice, and even in the same shower, no two people see it in the same way.
The shipping forecast takes us on a ritual tour of rain as it falls in darkness on the sea. Images form of places we have probably never been. Listening, we think of others listening. Rain, then showers. Moderate, occasionally poor.

TUE 10:30 The Seven Car Parks of Croydon (b00vk2fx)
Sue Perkins revisits her former hometown of Croydon to ask just how South London's 'Mini-Manhattan' became the butt of so many jokes, mocked by comedians from the great Morecambe and Wise to Basil Brush.

With a skyline made up of 60's brutalist office blocks and re-clad 80's ones, Croydon's aesthetics are hard to love, but whether you're heading to town from Gatwick Airport, commuting from the South Coast, or a new immigrant registering at the Home Office's Lunar House, Croydon is your welcome to London.
With a powerful sense of nostalgia tinged with panic, Sue, who's joined by fellow comedian Steve Punt, lurks on the stairwells and top storeys of seven car parks in Croydon, trying to get a new perspective on local planning decisions, past and present. She hears historic tales of Elizabeth the First and punk svengali Malcolm McLaren, Bridget Riley - Queen of OpArt - and the emergence of the hottest current urban music Dubstep.

Vincent Lacovara, fan of Croydon, and its current urban planner believes these concrete viewing platforms can provide a fresh vantage point from which the history and super-future of Croydon can be laid out before Sue - so that she can see all the possibilities it had to offer her, and which she missed growing up. Two sisters, four nights, one city.
April, 1941: Belfast has escaped the worst of the war – so far. Over the next two months, it’s going to be destroyed from above, so that people will say, in horror, My God, Belfast is finished.

WED 09:00 Robin Ince's Reality Tunnel (m001ngwk)
Fossils of the Mind
In the first of his two-part series Robin talks about love, books, and his love of books. He explores how we sometimes find it difficult to express our love and shares stories of the delight he's experienced on his travels. It is also a cautionary tale, warning of the dangers of not sharing praise and admiration before it's too late.
Escaping the confines of The Infinite Monkey Cage, comedian Robin Ince takes us on a journey through his Reality Tunnel in his second two-part stand-up series, recorded specially for Radio 4.
For over 30 years Robin Ince has been discharging fascinating thoughts, unusual knowledge, and infectious excitement into the universe. Over this time, these disparate, dusty specs of information have steadily clumped together and formed into an entity known as the 'Reality Tunnel'.
Previously, Robin's live appearances have only been visible to those astute enough to be tracking his trajectory; those with a keen enough eye to catch a fleeting glimpse of him as he twinkles through their orbit, emitting his ideas, shedding light on the human condition, before vanishing again into the distance. But now, using specialist recording tools and fancy editing, this phenomenon has been captured in high resolution audio for all to hear.
Praise for series 1
- “I was practically in tears of joy and wonder. I found it deeply moving and profoundly comforting”

WED 09:30 A British History in Weather (b07bdd27)
8. In Cloudland
Are the British to clouds what the Inuit are to snow? Alexandra Harris tells the story of the weather’s role in our cultural life.
Alexandra Harris tells the story of how the weather has written and painted itself into the cultural life of Britain. Are we to clouds what the Inuit was to snow?
Cloud meant 'hill' in Middle English, a solid, earthy thing. Looking at a cumulus cloud, rising bumpy and steep-sided above us, it's easy to see why. For a while in the fourteenth century, the same Northumbrian poem could contain both the tangible and the metaphorical, before the earthy meaning gradually faded, leaving its solid residue in our vocabulary in the form of ‘clot’ and ‘clod’. The figurative meaning soared, and clouds were ever after phenomena of the sky.

THU 09:30 A British History in Weather (b07bft85)
9. Storm
Alexandra Harris tells the story of how the weather has written and painted itself into the cultural life of Britain. An island at sea - the storms of King Lear and Turner and others.
Any storm has its drama. The poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, like his contemporary Turner, knew the particular exhilaration of them. Blowing in from the Bristol Channel, the gales are funnelled into the bowl of heathland known as the Valley of the Rocks, where they beat around furiously, trying to get free. Coleridge wanted to be in the midst of this great weather theatre, opening himself to its energy, feeling its effects on his skin, his nerves, his imagination.

10. Beginnings and Endings
Alexandra Harris concludes the story of how the weather has written and painted itself into the cultural life of Britain.
In Oscar Wilde's essay 'The Decay of Lying', a character proposes that we see in nature what art shows us to be there. He contends that the London fogs barely existed before artists started painting them. Then suddenly there were Whistler effects every night in Battersea and Monets rising up from the Thames. Art, he says, invented the fog. Well, that may be ridiculous, but perhaps there's a wisp of truth in it.

FRI 10:30 The Art of Adultery (b0717gdz)
Natalie Haynes explores why infidelity has inspired artists, writers and dramatists since the Ancient Greeks.
For centuries, popular culture has been enthralled by infidelity, moving from the ancient tales of Helen of Troy and Medea through to the popularity of modern day dramas like 'The Affair' and 'Doctor Foster'.
Along the way, few artists of note seem to have been able to avoid its dramatic appeal, whether Chaucer in Miller's Tale, Shakespeare in 'Othello' or Tolstoy in 'Anna Karenina' and 'War and Peace'. In 'The Art of Adultery'.
Natalie Haynes sets out to find out what the nature of that appeal might be, and also considers whether the way the basic story of unfaithful partners tells us anything about the times and places from where the particular stories are born.
Natalie meets author Julian Barnes to talk about his own novel 'Talking it Over' as well as attitudes to infidelity in 19th century France.
She visits Tate Britain to find out how attitudes on this side of the Channel were changing during the same period.
Filmmaker Jane Gillooly talks about her documentary 'Suitcase of Love and Shame' featuring recordings made by a straying couple for each other in 1960s America.
And Natalie hears from novelist Stella Duffy about how recent changes in attitudes have affected how gay and lesbian literature has tackled the subject.

With a natural knack for both comedy and character voices, Yasmine Akram and Aisling Bea will bring you warm, modern re-workings of popular ancient Irish stories.
Today it's Deirdre of Sorrows.
Written and performed by Aisling Bea and Yasmine Akram.
Producer: Raymond Lau
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in November 2012.
