SATURDAY 11 MAY 2024
SAT 00:00 Hancock's Helpers (b0107wzx)
Russell Davies explores Tony Hancock's on and off-air relationships with his sidekicks - from Sid James to Kenneth Williams.
In 1954 the first episode of 'Hancock's Half Hour' was broadcast on radio. Few realised then that Tony and his chums would become such a massive, lasting success.
In this tribute to a true comedy classic, Russell Davies explores the on and off-air relationships between Tony and his 'helpers', Kenneth Williams, Bill Kerr, Sid James and Hattie Jacques among them.
With archive and fresh interviews, and of course some clips from those classic shows too.
Producer: Libby Cross
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2004.

SAT 00:30 Briers on Hancock (b03m3d5j)
Richard Briers traces the life of Tony Hancock from triumph to tragedy.
Had he lived, Tony Hancock would have celebrated his 60th birthday on the 12 May 1984.
Born in Birmingham on 12th May 1924, the 10 years from 1952 saw Hancock rise to become acknowledged as one of the greatest comic talents this country has ever produced.
Richard Briers presents an affectionate tribute to his memory - Briers on Hancock: An Echo Of Remembered Laughter - the story of a man who simply refused to believe that he really was one of the greatest of all time.
A life long admirer, Richard explores why Hancock continued to demand more of himself professionally, at the cost of personal friendships and family, leading up to his tragic death in 1968.
With contributions from:-
Dennis Main Wilson, Denis Norden, George Fairweather, Ray Galton, Alan Simpson, Hugh Lloyd, John Freeman, Sid James and Bill Kerr.
Written and produced by John Pickles and Bill Morris.
Editor: Richard Edis

Who Am I, Again is a poignant and hilariously observed self-portrait of growing up in the Midlands as child of Jamaican immigrants seeking, though not always finding, a better life. The book candidly documents racism and fraught family relationships, but ultimately celebrates how a working-class kid from Dudley made the big time with support from those around him.

SAT 10:00 Sisters in Satire: The Pioneering Women of Comedy (m000tf7d)
3. Looking at Linda and Where's the F in News
From the dawn of broadcast comedy, women played a vital but largely overlooked role; more in the background rather than the forefront. What impact did the sisters of satire from the 60’s and 70’s have on the comedy we know today and what was their cultural influence? In the less enlightened sixties and seventies, women were often the butt of the joke, rather than making them.
Just because they weren’t the stars of the show didn’t mean their influence wasn’t felt. June Whitfield, Eleanor Bron and Miriam Margolyes were all quietly but firmly making their name in comedies such as The Glums, The Establishment Club and The Betty Witherspoon Show. These women paved the way for comedians and actors such as Jan Ravens, Meera Syal and Linda Smith.
In the last of three programmes, Samira Ahmed is joined by actor and director Arabella Weir and former radio producer and novelist Lissa Evans to discuss some of the best sitcoms from the BBC archives to assess the impact funny women have had on contemporary comedy and the extent of their satirical legacy.

Gardeners
Dan Pearson
Kirsty Young's guest is the garden designer, Dan Pearson.
His style is governed by a desire to create a sense of place and he is drawn to wild plants and gardens. Aged just five he discovered this passion, while building roof gardens for his collection of trolls and spent the summer watching the plant and animal life in a pond created by his father.
He gave up A' levels in favour of apprenticeships at RHS Wisley and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew and then spent several years working abroad, studying plants in their natural environment. His first large-scale project was creating a garden for Frances Mossman, a colleague of his mother's, who asked him to design the garden at her Northamptonshire plot. He won more clients through word of mouth and set up his own garden design company in the late 1980s. His work has since taken him all over the world and he has designed five award-winning gardens for the Chelsea Flower Show. Amongst his current projects he is creating a design for London's proposed Garden Bridge.

Calling All Forces (1952) & Star Bill (1954) Sketches
Radio 4 Extra celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of comic actor Tony Hancock – born 12th May 1924 - with a collection of rarely heard and previously lost radio programmes.
Introducing the shows, Jim Lee is joined by Martin Gibbons, president of the Tony Hancock Appreciation Society, who have helped find some of the lost tapes.
Tony Hancock stars in sketches from the BBC Light Programme’s Calling All Forces and Star Bill.
In a previously lost sketch from the Calling All Forces (
25.02.1952), Tony Hancock reprises his role as the tutor to Peter Brough's ventriloquial doll, Archie Andrews, in Educating Archie, grandiosely having the “pleasure of telling you the story of my life”.
Tony Hancock developed the character of 'Anthony Aloysius St John Hancock' – a version of himself he played in Hancock’s Half Hour, through the many iterations of the BBC Light Programme’s variety show Star Bill (Forces All Star Bill, All Star Bill), also written by Hancock Half Hour creators, Ray Galton and Alan Simpson.
In two surviving sketches from Star Bill (
21.03.1954) from the BBC archive we hear Tony Hancock first welcome unsuspecting guests to the “Seaview Boarding House. Proprietor A. Hancock”. Played by Graham Clark and Moira Lister, the couple are welcomed to this “….rat trap….I mean...suntrap”.
In the second sketch, Tony Hancock’s soak in the bath is disturbed when Moira Lister asks Graham Stark and Tony to help her move some furniture. She leaves out one vital piece of information, that Tony’s not best pleased with: “the piano? That bloomin great heavy walnut piece…."
Sketch from Calling All Forces, introduced by Ted Ray and starring Tony Hancock, first broadcast on the BBC Light Programme in February 1952.
Episode writers: Bob Monkhouse and Denis Goodwin. Tony Hancock performing his own material.
Producers: John Hooper & Leslie Bridgmont.
Surviving sketches from Star Bill, starring Tony Hancock, Graham Stark and Moira Lister, first broadcast on the BBC Light Programme in March 1954.

Hancock's Half Hour - A Visit to Swansea (1955)
Radio 4 Extra celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of comic actor Tony Hancock – born 12th May 1924 - with a collection of rarely heard and previously lost radio programmes.
Introducing the shows, Jim Lee is joined by Martin Gibbons, president of the Tony Hancock Appreciation Society, who have helped find some of the lost tapes.
Radio 4 Extra presents a long lost episode of Hancock’s Half Hour – A Visit To Swansea.
Rediscovered and restored by radio enthusiasts, The Radio Circle, it was first broadcast on the BBC Light Programme on the 10th May 1955, just two days before Tony Hancock’s 31st birthday.
Tony Hancock had taken an unscheduled trip to Italy, leaving Hancock Half Hour’s producer, Dennis Main Wilson, to ask Harry Secombe to step in to star in the first three episodes of the second series of Hancock’s Half Hour.
The fourth episode saw Tony return, and begrudgingly make ‘A Visit To Swansea’, to thank Harry Secombe for stepping in. Although the first two minutes are sadly missing, the remainder of the show, long searched for, is gloriously restored.
Ray Galton and Alan Simpson's classic comedy about the life and times of Anthony Aloysius St John Hancock.
Starring Tony Hancock.

Hancock & Terry-Thomas - Calling All Forces sketch (1952)
Radio 4 Extra celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of comic actor Tony Hancock – born 12th May 1924 - with a collection of rarely heard and previously lost radio programmes.
Introducing the shows, Jim Lee is joined by Martin Gibbons, president of the Tony Hancock Appreciation Society, who have helped find some of the lost tapes.
Tony Hancock stars in this previously lost sketch from the BBC Light Programme’s Calling All Forces from May 1952.
In this edition of the variety show of sketches and music, Tony compered the show with comedian Charlie Chester, alongside Josephine Crombie. It also features a special guest star appearance from radio, TV and film comedy star, Terry-Thomas (I’m All Right Jack, It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World).
Responding to the threat of TV, Tony Hancock and the team decide to create a ‘TV society drama for radio’, their own version of Lady Chatterley. With Tony as one of the her suitors, “Puffy Hancock”, and Terry-Thomas as Lady Chatterley’s overly attentive butler, what could go wrong….

1. An Unlooked for Offer
In the small town of Enniscorthy in the south east of Ireland in the early 1950s, Eilis Lacey is one among many of her generation who can find no work.
Her three brothers have already left to seek their fortunes in England - she and her sister Rose and her widowed mother are all that remain at home.
When a priest comes home from America for a holiday he recognises both Eilis's plight, and her potential.
Colm Toibin's masterful novel Brooklyn, a story of duty, love and a girl who crossed the ocean for a new life in New York.
Twice Booker-listed Toibin captures the immigrant's dislocation and a girl's yearnings. Although Eilis will struggle to find her feet and begin a new life on the other side of the Atlantic, the shiny young country she has arrived in will start to seduce her. When a tragedy calls her home, she will return with the glow of America firmly surrounding her. A love story and an exploration of personal choice and familial duty, Brooklyn is a tender, funny and compassionate portrait of the compromises made by those who must take a step into the unknown.

George Eliot's most autobiographical novel draws on her personal pain at the loss of the close bond with her brother who had cut off all contact with her. It resulted in one of the great novels of childhood, and one of literature's most unforgettable heroines. Like Anne of Green Gables and Jane Eyre, Maggie captures the dilemma of being the clever girl in the family, the ugly duckling, the misplaced foundling who longs to be recognised for the genius she secretly knows herself to be.

11. Decolonisation
Lord West tells the story of the Royal Navy's role in Britain's withdrawal from empire.
Travelling to Malta, he explains the Navy's central role in Maltese independence. Strolling through Valletta he describes life in the Royal Navy in the 1950s and 1960s, an era when hundreds of Royal Navy ships travelled the globe, journeying between dozens of overseas bases and acting very much like the world's policemen. He also recalls visiting the Gulf in the 1960s, and seeing creeks and towns barely large enough to hold a small warship but which are now enormous cities full of skyscrapers.
And Lord West recalls important episodes when the Royal Navy was called to intervene overseas - disastrously in Suez in 1956, but much more successfully in Kuwait in 1961 and Tanganyika in 1964.

MON 23:30 Susan Calman - Keep Calman Carry On (b071whf9)
Series 1
Holiday with John Finnemore
Susan Calman is the least relaxed person she knows.
She has no down time, no hobbies (unless you count dressing up your cats in silly outfits) and her idea of relaxation is to play Grand Theft Auto, an hour into which she is in a murderous rage with sky-high blood pressure. Her wife had to threaten to divorce her to make her go on holiday last year. Her first for four years. But she's been told by the same long-suffering wife that unless she finds a way to switch off, and soon, she's going to be unbearable.
So Susan is looking at her options to try and immerse herself in the pursuits that her friends find relaxing, to find her inner zen and outer tranquillity. Can she ditch the old Susan Calman and attempt to find the new Susan Calm?
This time, John Finnemore takes her on a spontaneous holiday.
Keep Calman Carry On is an audience stand up show in which Susan reports on how successful she's been - both at relaxing and at the pursuit itself - as well as playing in and discussing a handful of illustrative clips from her efforts.
It's an attempt to find out how people find solace or sanctuary in these worlds and how Susan can negotiate her own place in them.
Producer: Lyndsay Fenner.

Lord West tells the story of how the Royal Navy lost its aircraft carriers but gained the United Kingdom's nuclear deterrent.
The 1960s were a time of intense inter-service rivalry. The RAF and the Royal Navy exchanged blows in the corridors of Whitehall - and by the end of the decade the Royal Navy had lost its replacement aircraft carriers but been given responsibility for the future of the United Kingdom's nuclear deterrent.
Onboard one of the Navy's Trident submarines, Lord West hears how the coming of nuclear propulsion and nuclear power changed the shape of the Navy. And on his first visit to Faslane Peace Camp, he hears of the major impact the coming of nuclear technology had on Scottish public life.

If you only had a minute to say something, what would you say? Janine H. Jones explores the history of the 'voice recording booth'.
'Like talking on the phone but a thousand times more thrilling,' voice recording booths invite you to 'hear yourself as others hear you' by entering a weird machine to cut a record. Once a technological novelty, these recordings leave a unique legacy and a wonderful world of audio peculiarities, which serve as a vital reminder for how we communicate today.
Once a staple of seaside resorts and arcades, famously used in the films Brighton Rock and Badlands, they returned to prominence when Jack White restored a booth, on which Neil Young recorded his 2014 album. While the discs speak for themselves, the booths ask questions about us and how we choose to present ourselves to the world.
Janine H. Jones crosses the Atlantic, to meet the people who have restored these booths, to find out what’s the value of putting our money where our mouth is and speaking out loud. Recording personally and for posterity, why are people in their droves returning to make a permanent record, instead of the infinitely editable yet intangible digital recordings offered by the technology in our pocket?

I'm Terry Gross and this is Fresh Air
Terry Gross’s remarkable conversations have become a daily fixture for millions of Americans. Since 1975, the presenter of Fresh Air, one of National Public Radio’s most popular shows, has interviewed thousands of public figures - including musicians, Hollywood actors, Nobel Prize-winning authors and US Presidents.
In this Archive on 4, the writer Dolly Alderton turns the tables on Terry to find out how this unlikely host, who describes herself as shy, insecure and self-conscious, mastered the art of the radio interview. These interviews rarely happen face to face. Instead, they are conducted remotely, with Terry in Philadelphia and her guests in recording studios all over the world. Like a priest in a confession box, she is entrusted with their innermost thoughts and feelings.
Dolly picks out some of the most funny, poignant and revealing radio interviews of all time from the Fresh Air archive, including Terry’s unforgettable conversations with Maurice Sendak, Elton John, Lizzo and James Baldwin. Terry also reflects on some of her prickliest on-air encounters, with stars like Gene Simmons and Hillary Clinton.
With thanks to Danny Miller and the Fresh Air archive.

4. Christmas Comfort
As Eilis struggles to adapt to her new life in a city far from home, Christmas looms.
But she is not the only member of the Irish diaspora feeling homesick.
Helping Father Flood tend to his flock brings comfort and cheer.

Lord West tells the story of the Royal Navy in the Falklands War.
Lord West travels to the Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton, home of the Fleet Air Arm, to explain the vital importance of air power in winning the Falklands War.
He visits the memorial to friends of his who died in the conflict, including when his own ship, HMS Ardent, was sunk. And for a different perspective, above the waves, he speaks to the Duke of York, who flew Sea King helicopters during the conflict.
Lord West also explains the wider significance of the war. Not only did victory reverse planned cuts to the Royal Navy, it also had a much wider effect on the strategic position at the end of the Cold War.

In 1979, as a 21-year-old graduate, BBC weather presenter Peter Gibbs was sent to the end of the Earth, spending more than two years at the British Antarctic Survey’s Halley Research Station.
It was an experience that shaped his life.
Half a lifetime later, he’s returning for the first time.
Halley is celebrating its 60th anniversary. First established in 1956 on the Brunt Ice Shelf – a floating mass of ice hundreds of metres thick in parts, which flows off the Antarctic continent to the sea – Halley is the cornerstone of the British Antarctic Survey’s scientific research on the white continent.
At Cape Town, Peter boards the Royal Research Ship ‘Ernest Shackleton’ for a two-week voyage across the vast Southern Ocean. Docking beside the ice shelf, he rides a snowcat to the Halley site to find out more about how the science being done today compares with the observations he took himself three decades ago, and how a new generation is coping with life in the coldest, driest, windiest, most isolated place on Earth.
Peter talks to scientists including space weather expert Richard Horne, glaciologist Hilmar Gudmundsson, and polar mapping specialist Andrew Fleming to understand more about Halley’s vital role in data collection and analysis. He explores Halley’s architecture – a bold new design of linked modules elevated above the snow on hydraulic legs fitted with giant skis – and asks whether the millions spent at Halley is money well spent.
Finally, for old times’ sake, Peter repeats an experiment he himself performed hundreds of times during his Antarctic posting, working with meteorologist Amy Valach to launch a weather balloon loaded with scientific instruments into the chilly Antarctic skies.

The Counterfeiter
The Missing Hancocks recreates those episodes of the classic Hancock's Half Hour that have been wiped or lost from the archive.
The first modern sitcom, Hancock's Half Hour made stars of Tony Hancock, Sid James and Kenneth Williams, and launched Ray Galton and Alan Simpson as one of the most successful comedy-writing partnerships in history. But 20 episodes of the show were missing from the BBC archives. Now, after four highly successful series, the final batch of those episodes have been lovingly re-recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC Radio Theatre.
Tonight's episode: Hancock's fed up with Bill Kerr spending all day in bed, and decides to find him a job. But with Sid James involved, things were always going to get complicated.
Written by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, and with the classic score re-recorded by the BBC Concert Orchestra, the show stars Kevin McNally, Kevin Eldon, Simon Greenall, Robin Sebastian and Margaret Cabourn-Smith. The Counterfeiter was never recorded by the original team, and the cast and crew of The Missing Hancocks are proud to present a Hancock premiere.
Produced by Neil Pearson & Hayley Sterling.

5. The Melting Pot
As Bartocci's opens its doors to all customers whatever their colour, Eilis fights the prejudice of her fellow lodgers.
And even at Father Flood's Irish dance night, not everyone is Irish!
Read by Niamh Cusack.
Produced by Di Speirs.

Written by George Eliot.

15. 21st Century
In the final part of his history of the Royal Navy in the twentieth century, Lord West tells the story of the Royal Navy since the end of the Cold War.
The period since the end of the Cold War has seen major changes in Britain and the Royal Navy: in military, technological and social terms. In this final programme in the series, Lord West examines how those changes have affected the Navy.
Visiting HMS Queen Elizabeth, the Royal Navy's future aircraft carrier, Lord West shows how far the Navy has changed since the dawn of the twentieth century. He explores recent changes onboard - women being integrated into the service and gay people being welcomed. He describes rapidly changing technology, which has dramatically shrunk the number of people required to operate even very large ships.
And he looks at the many actions and conflicts which the Navy has taken part in since 1991, from the extraordinary and untold story of the departure from Hong Kong in 1997, to the war in Afghanistan.

Peter Tosh found international fame alongside Bob Marley as a member of The Wailers.
As a solo artist, he released several landmark reggae albums and even recorded with the Rolling Stones. But he was more than just a successful pop star: he was a revolutionary and a hero to many of Jamaica's poor.
He spent his life as a strident campaigner for civil rights and for the legalisation of marijuana. He was more militant and politcal than his former band mate and his uncompromising arrogance often landed him in serious trouble. For that reason, as this documentary reveals, his life could be as brutal as the way it ended.
Grammy award-winning filmmaker Don Letts explores his career.
