At the time of writing The Bloody Chamber in the late 1970s, Angela Carter was disaffected by both sides of the feminist debate. She re-worked traditional fairy tales from her own unique, literary outsider’s point of view, putting women at the centre of the stories.
With their feisty heroines and orgiastic mash-up of beasts, shape-shifters and ghouls, her extraordinary tales are the most perfect example of her style, not just for her incomparable prose, but also in the dizzying twists and turns of perception, fantasy and myth.
Controversially influenced by De Sade, she embraced the erotic, explored our deepest and darkest urges, and subverted the roles of hunter and prey, master and mistress so that, instead of male sexuality, it is the female that becomes transgressive and powerful.

The Poetry Editor
Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and to celebrate National Poetry Day (5.10.2023) he chooses 'The Poetry Editor'.
The publishing house Faber and Faber, has been in existence for over 90 years.
It is famous for its poetry list - Seamus Heaney, Sylvia Plath, Derek Walcott, Philip Larkin, Marianne Moore, WH Auden and TS Eliot, who, as poetry editor, brought the work of some of these poets into the world. The poetry editor, then, has a significant role.
Hannah Sullivan, winner of the TS Eliot Prize for her collection 'Three Poems', teases out what poetry editors actually do.
She talks to leading poetry editors, Neil Astley of Bloodaxe; Parisa Ebrahimi of Chatto & Windus and Matthew Hollis, who sat at Eliot's desk at Faber.
They discover and nurture new voices, but also have to sustain their lists. Might there be figures so distinguished they are beyond editing? Paul Muldoon, who might fall into this category, argues no - he longs for the exercise of editorial authority. Is the relationship of editor to poet akin to that of doctor and patient? Is the editorial office like the confessional - strictly confidential?
Hannah also speaks to several leading poets - Simon Armitage, Paul Muldoon, Julia Copus, Sarah Howe and Kayo Chingonyi - about being edited, and hears from people at the beginning of their careers such as Phoebe Stuckes.

SUN 23:00 Andy Hamilton Sort of Remembers (m0006zvf)
Series 2
Sport
Kicking off a series of themed but potentially misremembered anecdotes from Andy Hamilton.
Starting with sport - a subject very close to Andy's heart and something he’ll argue you should try and care about as well – however much of a non-fan you may claim to be! Expect heavy old leather footballs, annoyingly helpful cricket teammates and a round of golf interrupted by poisonous snakes.
Through comic observations and personal anecdotes, Andy examines how much (or how little) things have changed in the 60ish years he's been on this planet.
Andy was born in Fulham in 1954, read English at Cambridge and then in 1976 began writing comedy for BBC Radio, on programmes like Week Ending and The News Huddlines. In 1990, he and Guy Jenkin created Drop the Dead Donkey for Channel 4.
Andy has spent much of his working life making acute observations about politics and family life.
In 2007, again with Guy Jenkin, he created the massive TV hit, Outnumbered, which celebrated the chaos of life with young children. More recently they created the highly topical Ballot Monkeys for Channel 4, which charted the absurdities of the General Election and then the EU Referendum.
For over 20 years he has been playing the part of Satan in his Radio 4 sitcom, Old Harry's Game. Andy is also a popular panellist on shows such as The News Quiz and Have I Got News For You.
In following episodes, Andy will sort of remember class, religion and stupidity.

Nigel Kennedy (the A-Side)
Nigel Kennedy talks about his record breaking 1989 recording of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons.
Series in which leading performers and songwriters talk about the album that made them or changed them.
Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios, each edition includes two episodes - the A-side and B-side.
In the A-side, Nigel Kennedy. talks to John Wilson about the best-selling classical work of all time.
Having trained at both the Yehudi Menuhin School of Music and the Juilliard School in New York, Nigel Kennedy has developed into one of the most popular classical musicians of his generation. This in no small part is due to the phenomenal success of his recording of The Four Seasons in 1989. At the time he explained that he set out to use "every kind of technique I know" to communicate his feeling for the music to his listeners.
Kennedy's passion for non-classical music has seen him play alongside The Who and Kate Bush, record violin-based versions of songs by The Doors and Jimi Hendrix, and release an album for the jazz label Blue Note Sessions. However, The Four Seasons retains a special place in his repertoire, and in 2015 he released a completely fresh take on Vivaldi's violin concertos.
Nigel Kennedy talks about the album that earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records, and performs exclusive excerpts from the concertos that helped make him famous.
In the B-side of the programme, it's the turn of the audience to ask the questions.

Is This Platform Four Madam? Is it? by Pauline Melville
An original short work for radio by the acclaimed Guyanese-born author Pauline Melville.
The haunting story of a remarkable encounter with two mysterious strangers on a train journey south from Newcastle to London.
A post-graduate is leaving Newcastle and heading south after finishing her English studies when she is struck by two unusual men who seem oddly over-anxious to establish if they are on the right train. Once on board the pair break into song and it emerges they are travellers, who have never learnt to read, on their way to their annual festive gathering, Appleby Fair.
This short work captures a fleeting moment when two contrasting cultures, rural and urban, lyrical and literary, age-old and modern, rub up against each other on one memorable summer's evening.

Great Spy Books: Fact or Fiction?
Peter Hennessy, the leading expert on state secrecy, asks how close the great British spy novels come to reality and explores what they reveal about intelligence and security.
By drawing on official papers and what were once top secret intelligence documents, and by interviewing former diplomats and former officers in MI5 and MI6, he compares and contrasts fiction with real espionage.
Much of the appeal lies in their apparent authenticity. But how much do James Bond or George Smiley resemble real spies? And is fact sometimes stranger than fiction?
Peter Hennessy shows that spy books in the early 1900s made a big impact, influencing Britain's first secret service bureau, the forerunner of MI5 and MI6. He traces the development of spy fiction from its early days to the more nuanced spy stories of Somerset Maugham in 'Ashenden' and of Eric Ambler's 1930s' novels.
Their more subtle approach is echoed by Graham Greene and John le Carre, whereas Ian Fleming's hero, James Bond, is part spy, part assassin.
Cold War novels reflect the deep fear of nuclear war and of betrayal by double-agents ('moles'), but can modern spy fiction achieve the same degree of intrigue and suspense?

FRI 20:00 The Tarpaulin - A Biography (b083n15m)
Historian Dina Gusejnova tells the story of tarpaulin from 17th-century mariners to today’s refugee camps and those living on the periphery of society. In the process, Dina shines a light on statelessness, protest, heroism and transgression.
The tarpaulin is a fabric of conflict. Reinvented over its five hundred years of history, the material now has an important role in providing shelter to the millions of people who fall between the cracks of international geopolitics following periods of violence or natural disaster.
As a material, this ubiquitous water-resistant fabric is intimately connected to the economic and social history of the naval empires.
Today, tarpaulins are made from plastics but, until the 20th century, they were made from flax canvas imported from Ireland and the Baltic, produced in Britain and coated in water-resistant tar.
Tarpaulin also gave its name to sailors who slept on deck using the material to protect against the wind, rain and sea and it came to symbolise the possibility of rising through the ranks to become so-called ‘Tarpaulin Commanders’.
Tarpaulin features in the works of writers such as Hermann Melville and Daniel Defoe and inspires filmmakers like Eisenstein who tells the story of mutiny in Battleship Potemkin, where the court-marshalled sailors face execution under tarpaulin – a key scene in cinematic history, it symbolises to many viewers the beginning of the Russian Revolution.
