SAT 00:45 Get Carter: The Bloody Chamber (b0bkqt8g)
The Bloody Chamber
The first of five stories to gobble you up from Angela Carter's iconic collection of fairy stories.
Angela begins by re-telling of the story of Bluebeard.
A young pianist marries a wealthy aristocrat, a Marquis, much older than herself and with three previous wives, all mysteriously deceased.
Finding herself alone in the empty castle, with nothing to do but play the piano, she cannot resist entering the one room the Marquis has forbidden to her.
At the time of writing The Bloody Chamber in the late 1970s, Carter was disaffected by both sides of the feminist debate. She re-worked traditional fairy tales from her own unique, literary outsider’s point of view, putting women at the centre of the stories.
With their feisty heroines and rgiastic mash-up of beasts, shape-shifters and ghouls, her extraordinary tales are the most perfect example of her style, not just for her incomparable prose, but also in the dizzying twists and turns of perception, fantasy and myth.
Controversially influenced by De Sade, she embraced the erotic, explored our deepest and darkest urges, and subverted the roles of hunter and prey, master and mistress so that, instead of male sexuality, it is the female that becomes transgressive and powerful.
Dramatised by Olivia Hetreed.

They've sold over 30 million albums worldwide, and have won three Grammys and four Ivor Novello awards. Their debut studio album, Pablo Honey, was released in 1993, with their debut single, Creep, becoming a big international success.

He made his own electric guitar when he was 10, and wrote his first song at 11. At his secondary school he joined up with fellow pupils and they formed a band called On a Friday, as that was the only day they were allowed to rehearse. They all went their separate ways as university students, but then signed to Parlophone in 1991 and renamed themselves Radiohead.
Thom has collaborated with artists including PJ Harvey and Björk and has composed for film and theatre. His first feature film soundtrack, Suspiria, was released in 2018. His first classical piece, Don’t Fear the Light, was premiered in Paris in 2019, and he toured with his solo album Anima.

Travel through the bad gateway in this modern ghost story as writer and performer Tom Neenan discovers what horrors lurk in our apps and gadgets.
In this episode, tech blogger Tom has to stay ahead of the pack - in every sense.
Modern technology is terrifying. The average smartphone carries out three-point-three-six billion instructions per second. The average person can only carry out one instruction in that time. Stop and think about that for a second. Sorry, that’s two instructions - you won’t be able to do that.
But what if modern technology was literally terrifying?
What if there really was a ghost in the machine?

Mixtape 3 - Cassetternet
Radiolab is a Peabody-award-winning show about curiosity. Where sound illuminates ideas, and the boundaries blur between science, philosophy, and the human experience.
Radiolab Mixtape, a special 4 part series featuring the impact of the cassette tape
Radiolab Mixtape 3 Cassetternet: exploring how the cassette tape helped to create the internet.
In 1983, Simon Goodwin had a strange thought. Would it be possible to broadcast computer software over the radio? If so, could listeners record it off the air and onto a cassette tape? This experiment and dozens of others in the early 80s created a series of cassette fueled, analog internets. They copied and moved information like never before, upended power structures and created a poisonous social network that brought down a regime.
Radiolab examines how these early internet came about, and how the societal and cultural impacts of these analog information networks can still be felt today.
Radiolab Mixtape is reported, produced, scored and sound designed by Simon Adler.

Donovan (the A Side)
Donovan talks about his psychedelic revolution inspiring 1966 album, 'Sunshine Superman'.
Series in which leading performers and songwriters talk about the album that made them or changed them.
Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios, each edition includes two episodes - the A-side and B-side.
A-side: Donovan's 'Sunshine Superman'
‘Sunshine Superman’, according to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame “ignited the psychedelic revolution virtually single-handedly” when it was released in the summer of 1966.
‘Sunshine Superman’ is Donovan’s breakthrough third album and a radical departure from his previous work. Born in Glasgow, Donovan Phillips Leitch grew up listening to his father reading him poetry and his family singing Scots Irish folk music. He began playing guitar when he was 14 and was 18 when he had his first hit, ‘Catch the Wind’. A year later he began work on the album that first introduced meditation, Celtic mythology and Flower Power to the world.
Creating a unique fusion of classical, jazz, folk, pop, Celtic, Latin and Indian music, the album veered from the LA-influenced ‘The Trip’ and ‘The Fat Angel’ (written for Mama Cass) to the medieval tinged ‘Guinevere’ and ‘Legend of a Girl Child Linda’ (written for Brian Jones’ ex-girlfriend Linda Lawrence who became Donovan’s life-long muse and wife). Linda is also the Sunshine Super-Girl of the song ‘Sunshine Superman’ which topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic and featured a young Jimmy Page on lead guitar.

In the B-side of the programme, it's the turn of the audience to ask the questions.

FRI 20:00 India's Classical Music Marathon (b07j4kfy)
Aditya Chakrabortty journeys to Kolkata and into the mythology of one of India's most precious musical traditions.
Over the course of an all-night classical music concert – or 'conference' – we hear some of the best Indian classical musicians on the planet describe the intricacies of their art, and explain why it might not last much longer in a culture short of attention and keen for quick satisfaction.
At the Uttarpara Sangeet Chakra Conference, on the bank of the river Ganges just north of Kolkata, sitarists, tabla-players, vocalists and other instrumentalists start at 8pm and try to outplay each other until 7 o’clock in the morning, to an audience of nearly 3,000. In doing so, they reenact a tradition central to Indian classical music, which was based on such a competitive tradition with artists battling each other in front of a royal court.
Aditya meets some of the audience members and musicians trying to keep the all-night conference alive, including some of Indian classical music’s biggest names – Shahid Parvez, Tanmoy Bose and Ajoy Chakrabarty, as well as the Kolkata-based writer and classically trained singer Amit Chaudhuri.

Why do my feet slip on a wet floor but when my feet are even slightly moist it's nearly impossible to put on a pair of socks without falling over and cursing the universe. What is going on here?' asks Evelyn's Dad, Sam.
Hannah and Adam investigate the science of friction and lubrication - so called 'tribology' with the help of tribologists and mechanical engineers Professor Ashlie Martini from California University Merced and Professor Roger Lewis from the University of Sheffield.
With their help Hannah and Adam find out why leaves on the line are so slippery, what happens to graphite in space and what is the slipperiest food. Professor of Materials, Mark Miodownik from University College London explains what's going on when friction stops two materials sliding past each other and wonders whether the slipperiest substance was actually discovered accidentally in a lab by scientists looking for something completely different.
Also in the programme why the ability to reduce friction, even by minuscule amounts could have a huge impact for sustainability and reducing energy use.
