Imtiaz Dharker
Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects A Portrait Of...Imtiaz Dharker.
Follow artist Fiona Graham-Mackay as she paints a portrait of the poet, artist and documentary film-maker.
Born in Pakistan and raised in Glasgow, Imtiaz was awarded the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry in 2014. She writes about freedom, cultural intolerance, gender politics, love and loss. Fellow poet Carol Ann Duffy has said, "If there were to be a World Laureate, then for me the role could only be filled by Imtiaz Dharker."
Fiona Graham-Mackay has painted hundreds of portraits, including Seamus Heaney and Sir Andrew Motion. Drawing is, she says, “the flow of life, the soul of life,” and “you have to fall a little in love with your subject”.
It’s a revealing, intimate experience, peeling away the layers to capture the essence of the sitter as seen through the artist’s eye. And in this, conversations meander in unexpected places.

London, 1958. 'I swore by Elvis and all the saints that this last teenage year of mine was going to be a real rave.'
The 18-year-old narrator of Colin MacInnes's cult classic is determined to declare his independence from earlier generations as he roams London with his camera and a sharp eye for the stylish and the subversive.
In the smoky jazz clubs of Soho, the coffee bars of Notting Hill and the cheap rooms of Pimlico, the young and the restless - the absolute beginners - are revolutionising youth culture and forging a new carefree lifestyle of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll.
Meanwhile the Teddy Boy gangs are staging internecine battles and a generation of Black immigrants is struggling to make a life in a hostile city.
The definitive account of London life in the 1950s and what it means to be a teenager, this account of a young man's coming of age captures the spirit of a generation and the changing face of the city in the era of the first race riots and the lead-up to the Swinging Sixties.

Robbie Williams (A-Side)
Robbie Williams discusses the 1997 hit 'Life Thru a Lens', his first post-Take That album.
Series in which leading performers and songwriters talk about the album that made them or changed them.
Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios, each edition includes two episodes - the A-side and B-side.
This is the A-side.
Robbie Williams is the UK's best-selling solo artist of all time. But when he released his debut solo album, "Life Thru A Lens", after leaving the all-conquering boyband, Take That, it was initially met with negative reviews and was slow to take off.
However, with songs like Ego A Go Go, Lazy Days, Let Me Entertain You and, of course, Angels, the album not only went on to spend more than 4 years in the charts and become the 58th best-selling album of all time, it also laid down the solid foundations for all that was to follow: nine further solo albums, seven number one singles and more BRIT awards than any other artist.
Here Robbie Williams talks candidly with John Wilson about the album that started it all and they are joined in the studio by the album's co-writer and producer, Guy Chambers as well as guitarist Gary Nuttall and a string quartet.
In the B-side of the programme, it's the turn of the audience to ask the questions.

After treatment for Ovarian and breast cancer Chippy, is mad Jill is sad and Terri is definitely dangerous to know! The road back after cancer treatment can be tricky and full of obstacles.
Two middle aged women and their younger friend seek to regain their zest for life and love by learning to dance at Bad Salsa, the club where everyone knows your name but no-one knows your prognosis!
Depictions of people with cancer on TV and radio too often follow a standard format; there is the diagnosis, the depression the chemo, then the false recovery followed by the tragic death.
Written by Kay Stonham, Bad Salsa tries to paint a picture at once more hopeful and more in line with survival rates which have improved immensely over the past 20 years.
For many, 'living with cancer' is now their day to day challenge. Our characters have finished their treatment and are in the process of finding their way back to normal life or at least finding a "new normal." Everyday challenges must go on like boring marriages, distracting crushes, troublesome children, difficult workmates and infuriating parents. But their brush with mortality gives them a new perspective.
So do they preserve their pre-cancer status quo or in Terri's words, to say "sod it all" and "go for it!"
Follow the women as they embrace the world of salsa whilst they adjust to life after cancer.

Play for Today
Alison Steadman celebrates Play for Today on BBC television.
The series ran from 1970 until 1984 and offered the audience hundreds of plays, many of which tackled the thorny issues of the day - industrial relations, the rise of the far right, poverty and consumerism. The series also included classics such as Abigail's Party and Nuts in May - which starred Alison Steadman and shone a perceptive light on suburban pretentions and preoccupations.
This archive-rich programme includes contributions from Mike Leigh and Ken Loach. We also talk to Margaret Matheson who produced Scum, the play about life in a borstal which was banned by the BBC; Paula Milne, one of the few women writers on the series; and Maureen Lipman, who was given an early acting role in Play for Today and whose late husband Jack Rosenthal was responsible for Bar Mitzvah Boy and Spend, Spend, Spend, the tragic story of pools winner Vivien Nicholson.
The landscape of drama on the small screen has now expanded enormously with vast choice and an imperative to run any drama over several episodes. So is there still a place for the single-episode 'play'? Was there a beauty and a discipline in that which we have lost? We talk to today's very successful television dramatist Jack Thorne.

Lacrimosa
26-year-old, Proinsias O'Coinn, has spent most of his life thinking that something is wrong with him.
Ever since he was a teenager, he's been trying to find a song, a film, a poem *any* piece of art which has the power to make him cry.
When friends would be moved to tears by a weepy film or a sad song, Proinsias would look on in envy, wishing it could happen to him. You see in his head, being able to cry at a piece of art would let him engage with it and appreciate it like everyone else.
He's come close on a few occasions. Like when Jean Grey kills Professor X in X-Men 3 - or when listening to the Adele song 'One and Only'. But it's the sheer joy at these moments - that this could be it, this could be the time he's finally able to cry - that actually stops the tears from coming. It's like the sneeze that comes tantalisingly close but just never happens.
So Proinsias is on a mission to finally find a piece of art that can make him cry. But as he embarks on this very personal challenge, he finds himself facing up to much bigger questions about himself and who he is.

The Mosquito Conundrum
The doctors put mosquitoes on trial, as listener Cathy in the UK asks, ‘What is the point of mosquitoes?’ in response to our show about wasps.
Mosquitoes have undeniably played a role in killing millions of people. Malaria is the single biggest cause of death in human history. But Erica McAlister, senior curator of flies and fleas at the UK’s Natural History Museum, reveals that not all mosquitoes are interested in biting us for a blood meal, or are involved in transmitting disease. Only the females of about 10 species are the most problematic for humanity, from around 3600 true species of mosquito. Limited research indicates that many play important roles in ecosystems, for example as pollinators on land and as food sources during their larval stage in aquatic environments.
Nonetheless, those roughly 10 species cause devastating disease. Kate Jones’ research at University College London examines the interface of ecology and human health. Malaria and dengue fever alone cause over 300 million infections annually. And there are many more diseases transmitted by mosquitoes: Zika, West Nile fever, Yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis – the list goes on, and with urbanisation and climate change, the picture is constantly changing.
So what can be done? Should we try to annihilate the disease-carrying species? Insecticide use has historic and ongoing controversy, as the difficulties of needing to stop deaths in the short term risks longer term environmental damage, with unforeseen and possibly greater consequences for humanity. So Adam turns to new, genetic technology with zoologist Matthew Cobb. Can and should we modify mosquitoes to wipe themselves out, by wrecking local populations with sterile males, or use a technique called a gene drive to perpetuate debilitation through generations? Or could life find a way to evolve past our attempts at control, and cause greater problems? The doctors deliberate and try to decide a verdict on mosquitoes’ fate.

Opt to Adopt
New comedy from stand-up comedian Ashley Blaker about his unusual home life. In episode two, Ashley tells the story of how the Blakers came to add to their already hectic home by adopting a two-year-old girl with Down Syndrome.
Ashley Blaker: 6.5 Children is a mix of stand-up and observational documentary, all recorded in the Blakers’ unusual home with the voices of his real family, and tackling parenting, adoption and raising children with special needs.
The series brings a whole new perspective to the subject of parenting. That is because as parents of six children, Ashley and his wife Gemma are trying to raise a family in a world that is only really set up for having two. What's more, the Blakers’ children are not just any kids. Three have special needs – two autistic boys and an adopted girl with Down Syndrome – and Ashley Blaker: 6.5 Children sensitively finds the funny in both raising children with disabilities and adoption.
The series is written and performed by Ashley Blaker - a comedian who has performed on five continents including tours of the UK, USA, Canada, South Africa, Israel and Australia. His 2018 Off-Broadway run was called ‘a slickly funny stand-up show’ by the New York Times and, in 2020, he returned with Goy Friendly which ran at the prestigious SoHo Playhouse.
Ashley is joined by Shelley Blond (Peep Show, Cold Feet and the voice of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider), Kieran Hodgson (three-time Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee), Rosie Holt (online lockdown star with countless viral videos) amd Judith Jacob (EastEnders, The Real McCoy, Still Open All Hours).
Also appearing as themselves are Ashley’s own children: Ami (17), Ophie (15), Simi (13), Soroh (12), Sruly (11) and Bina (7).
