SAT 06:00 David Pownall (m00016f3)
In Praise of Evil
David Pownall’s drama imagines what may have happened if the composer Monteverdi had been summoned to Rome to appear before the all-powerful Inquisition on charges of allowing blasphemy and immorality to go unpunished at the end of his magnificent new opera ‘The Coronation of Poppea’.
The Emperor Nero, persecutor of the early Christian church, is the leading character and concludes the opera by singing a sublime love duet - something the church authorities cannot comprehend or sanction.
Weak and frightened, the elderly Monteverdi is even brought face to face with the highly unpredictable Pope.
How will Monteverdi escape the suffocating clutches of the Church?
Will the Inquisition succeed in stifling his creative impulses?
Why is the Pope so involved?
This is novelist and dramatist David Pownall's 89th play for radio – a remarkable achievement.
He revisits some of the long-standing areas of artistic interest that have always intrigued him. What motivates composers? What emotions inspire great music? How can a composer reconcile himself to the unbending demands of the Church or the State when under intense mental and physical pressure. Can a composer ever truly express himself under such strictures? This debate lies at the heart of his great stage play, the black comedy Master Class, in which Stalin tries to ‘persuade’ Prokofiev and Shostakovitch to work together to produce the perfect piece of Soviet music.

And of course he takes every possible opportunity to tell a ridiculous joke and sing a preposterous song along the way.
Tim arrives at the Babbacombe Theatre in Torquay, where the seaside crowd sing a song about a box and a local laughter yoga teacher leads an impromptu workshop.

The Crank
Isy Suttie recounts the tale of the Crank, a Matlock oddball who Isy's mother roped into helping Isy study the Welsh language. Along the way, Isy picks up a bit of morse code.
Another love story, told partly through song.
Sometimes Isy has merely observed the lives of others; quite often she's intervened, changing the action dramatically - for better or worse.
Intertwined within these stories are related real life anecdotes from her own, often disastrous, love life.
With her award-winning multi-character and vocal skills, and accompanied by her guitar, Isy creates a hilarious and deeply moving world, sharing with us her lessons in life and love.

A New Perspective
After treatment for ovarian and breast cancer Chippy, mad Jill is sad and Terri is definitely dangerous to know!
The road back after cancer treatment can be tricky and full of obstacles.
Two middle-aged women and their younger friend seek to regain their zest for life and love by learning to dance at Bad Salsa, the club where everyone knows your name but no-one knows your prognosis!
Depictions of people with cancer on TV and radio too often follow a standard format; there is the diagnosis, the depression the chemo, then the false recovery followed by the tragic death.
Written by Kay Stonham, Bad Salsa tries to paint a picture at once more hopeful and more in line with survival rates, which have improved immensely over the past 20 years.
For many, 'living with cancer' is now their day-to-day challenge. Our characters have finished their treatment and are in the process of finding their way back to normal life or at least finding a "new normal."
Everyday challenges must go on like boring marriages, distracting crushes, troublesome children, difficult workmates and infuriating parents. But their brush with mortality gives them a new perspective.
So do they preserve their pre-cancer status quo, or in Terri's words, to say, "sod it all" and "go for it!"?
Follow the women as they embrace the world of salsa whilst they adjust to life after cancer.

Don Warrington reads Sam Selvon's 1950's classic about the lives of a group of Caribbean immigrants in London.
Moses's friend Tolroy was horrified when his entire family turned up at Waterloo, wanting to enjoy his new prosperity in London. He has eventually got them settled off the Harrow Road, and Aunt Tanty is rapidly becoming a well-known character in the area. But she still hasn't ventured into the centre if the city by tube or bus, something that she decides to remedy.
Sam Selvon's rich and touching 1956 novel describes how Moses and his friends of the Windrush generation go about making new lives for themselves with vigour and panache, navigating the rules and regulations of their new home, lending support to each other when needed, learning to survive; it's not long before, as Moses puts it, 'the boys coming and going, working, eating, sleeping, going about the vast metropolis like veteran Londoners.'
The Lonely Londoners will be broadcast the week before Colin MacInnes' vibrant novel about London, Absolute Beginners, set just a couple of years later as racial tensions rise; together the two books offer an unforgettable portrait of a city and a society undergoing convulsive change.

All Things Must Pass at 50
In November 1970 a triple album was released by the Beatle previously known as ‘the Quiet One’. George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass was unique, not because it was number one around the world, but because of its fascination with Eastern religion.
Growing up in the 1970s, musician and composer Nitin Sawhney was aware of George Harrison and his interest in Indian classical music, particularly his close connection with Ravi Shankar. He knew Harrison’s hit singles, but his most famous album, All Things Must Pass, remained unexplored. Was this LP, written in the latter years of the 1960s already out of date in 1970, or was it in fact ahead of its time, with its heart-felt lyrics and religious themes? This month sees the 50th anniversary of the its release and so is a good time to reappraise George Harrison’s most successful album.
Interviewees include Olivia Harrison, Michael Palin, Jools Holland, biographers Graeme Thomson and Joshua M. Greene, keyboard player Bobby Whitlock, drummer Alan White, and guitarist Dave Mason.

Galahad is getting on well in London, in fact he sometimes feels like a king as he strolls through the park, three or four pounds in his pocket, sharp clothes on, off to meet a new girl under the clock in Piccadilly tube station. But there's a darker side to the city, and a hungrier one, that prompts Galahad into a high-risk exploit.

FRI 20:00 In Search of Great Uncle Frank (b06gqdwy)
Actor and comedian Hugh Dennis takes a personal journey to Gallipoli in Turkey to find out about his great uncle, private Frank Hinnels, who was sent there to fight against the mighty Ottoman Empire in the First World War.
Following in Frank's footsteps is poignant yet serene. In the middle of what was no-man's land, surrounded by fields of sun-flowers and olive trees, Hugh reads from a journal which describes the aftermath of a sniper attack:
"We were all completely exhausted and fellows risking their lives to get to a small water hole full of tortoises and covered by enemy snipers".
Hugh's guide is battlefield historian, Major Mike Peters who takes him to the very spot where his great-uncle fell in October 1915.
"One of the great sadnesses for my grandparents," says Hugh, "was that the letter telling them that he had died arrived before his last letter home. It was like correspondence from beyond the grave."
Hugh's journey is tinged with sadness but also characteristic edginess and humour.
Curious to hear the Turkish story, Hugh meets the descendants of Turkish Gallipoli soldiers. He is surprised to find that some villages on the peninsula have never truly recovered since the campaign. Hayriah is a 75 year old café owner whose grandfather was killed in the battle. She tells Hugh that, because his great-uncle fell on Turkish soil, Frank had now become "one of our sons".
Hugh and Mike finish their travels sitting in an ANZAC trench as night falls. They ask whether the political lessons of Gallipoli have ever been truly learned.
One month later, back home in Sussex, Hugh consults his philosopher's stone to tell us what ultimately he thinks he's learned from his trip to Gallipoli.

The Scientific Exploration of Astrology
Astrology – could there be something to it? asks Dan from Australia. Rutherford and Fry investigate the science that has investigated astrology.
Professor Richard Wiseman, (sceptical of all things paranormal and a Virgo) and Professor in the Public Understanding of Psychology at the University of Hertfordshire, explains the long history of the scientific investigation of astrology. He has also run his own experiments to test whether astrology can help you play the stock market and to investigate if people born in the summer are luckier than those born in the winter – the results may surprise you.
Journalist and author, Jo Marchant (Leo and fascinated non-believer) has written all about the history of astrology in her new book – 'The Human Cosmos – A Secret History to the Stars'. In the beginning astrology and astronomy were one and the same. She explains how astrology flourished with the elite and ruling classes of ancient Babylon, Egypt and Greece.
Data scientist, Alex Boxer (Taurus and cautious astrology tourist) explains that astrology may have been humanity's first attempt to predict the future with algorithms, something we’re doing more and more of now. In his book, ‘A scheme of heaven, astrology and the birth of science’, he describes how astrological and scientific algorithms are all just big data science looking for patterns. The issue lies in what that data is.

FRI 22:00 Ashley Blaker: 6.5 Children (m000xmz6)
Too Many Kids
Comedy from stand-up comedian Ashley Blaker about his unusual home life. In episode one, Ashley considers the downside to having a large family - including a morning routine so challenging it would give Michael McIntyre a heart attack and an almost never ending need to replace phone chargers.
Ashley Blaker: 6.5 Children is a mix of stand-up and observational documentary, all recorded in the Blakers’ unusual home with the voices of his real family, and tackling parenting, adoption and raising children with special needs.
The series brings a whole new perspective to the subject of parenting. That is because as parents of six children, Ashley and his wife Gemma are trying to raise a family in a world that is only really set up for having two. What's more, the Blakers’ children are not just any kids. Three have special needs – two autistic boys and an adopted girl with Down Syndrome – and Ashley Blaker: 6.5 Children sensitively finds the funny in both raising children with disabilities and adoption.
The series is written and performed by Ashley Blaker - a comedian who has performed on five continents including tours of the UK, USA, Canada, South Africa, Israel and Australia. His 2018 Off-Broadway run was called ‘a slickly funny stand-up show’ by the New York Times and, in 2020, he returned with Goy Friendly which ran at the prestigious SoHo Playhouse.
Ashley is joined by Shelley Blond (Peep Show, Cold Feet and the voice of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider), Kieran Hodgson (three-time Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee), Rosie Holt (online lockdown star with countless viral videos) amd Judith Jacob (EastEnders, The Real McCoy, Still Open All Hours).
Also appearing as themselves are Ashley’s own children: Ami (17), Ophie (15), Simi (13), Soroh (12), Sruly (11) and Bina (7).
