Lionel Stillman has a new job, a girlfriend he thinks he loves, and a secret ambition - to be a stand-up comic.
But he also has a problem. People make him nervous.
Stuart McLoughlin stars as Lionel.
As Lionel stumbles from bad date with Emma to bad first day at a call centre, he struggles with an inner voice telling him he's boring and useless - "or just plain weird".
At first, Emma thinks he's attractively shy. Then she decides he's a drinker.
But Lionel does have friends. At a weekly support group his fellow sufferers Simon, Max and Rosie uncover his ambition to be a comic and encourage him to take it further by setting a challenge: to perform in a comedy club.
As the night approaches, the idea seems ludicrous. How can a man who can't bring himself to meet his girlfriend's parents stand up and perform in front of a raucous pub crowd? Rosie holds the key.
Gary Ogin's comedy explores the crippling effects of acute social anxiety on work, hopes and relationships.

Arthur Askey
Rob Wilton
Tommy Handley
Kenny Everett
Ken Dodd
Jimmy Tarbuck
Alexei Sayle
Patricia Routledge
John Bishop
* Big-hearted Arthur Askey was born in Liverpool in 1900 and went on to front Band Waggon, the first regular BBC radio comedy series. Russell Davies introduces an episode of TURNS OF THE CENTURY profiling the man who coined the famous phase "Ay-Thang-You."
* Rob Wilton's was a different catch-phrase, but like Arthur Askey, his comedy entertained millions during the war years, kicking off with those immortal words "The Day War Broke Out". Mark Radcliffe tells Rob's story in an episode of HOW TICKLED AM I?
* ITMA, or IT'S THAT MAN AGAIN for those not in the know, was the radio home of Tommy Handley, a comedian who was struck down in his prime, bringing to an end one of the most popular radio comedy series the BBC has ever known. And sticking with comedy catchphrases, it was Tommy who first started using the acronym TTFN - long before instant messaging and mobile phone text speak!
* Ken Dodd loves a catch phrase too, and he loves his tickling stick. Find out what happened when he chatted to fellow Liverpudlian funny-man Ricky Tomlinson in WHEN DODDY MET RICKY
* As radio revolutionaries go, they don't get much more radical than Kenny Everett. Well known on both commercial and BBC national radio, Paul focuses on his time at local BBC Radio Merseyside - from KENNY EVERETT: THE LOCAL RADIO YEARS.
* Jimmy Tarbuck tells DESERT ISLAND DISCS presenter Sue Lawley how he got his start in comedy.
* Barry Cryer profiles a bit on an imposter to the programme - Patricia Routledge. As Paul O'Grady is quick to point out, Patricia hails from Birkenhead rather than Liverpool, but she's very welcome. The star of Keeping Up Appearances became best known for being the lady of the house at the notorious Bucket Residence.
* And finally, current star John Bishop chats to DESERT ISLAND DISCS' Kirsty Young about the career change that took him from salesman to stand-up.

SAT 22:00 Mitch Benn Is the 37th Beatle (b03szxdh)
Musical satirist Mitch Benn explores his comedy connections to the story of the Beatles.
Mitch has realised that over the years many people have claimed the title The Fifth Beatle. In fact, so many of them have been described as such that there are now at least 36 of them. They can't all be right. But some of them are righter than others...
Fifty years on from the release of 'Please, Please Me', Mitch presents his own definitive list of the Beatles.
He presents a whistle-stop tour through musical history and the enduring legacy of the Fab Four, whilst shamelessly milking his own - incredibly tenuous- connection to it.

SUN 06:00 Poetry Extra (m001mbz2)
Clarke's Psalter
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's archive and chooses Clarke's Psalter as contemporary poet Edward Clarke examines his process of engaging with the Psalms and scrutinises his belief that poetry is the most powerful means of negotiating and making sense of ourselves and the world today.
Edward Clarke charts his journey writing a collection of modern Psalms. It began with an accidental attempt to write a Psalm in rhyming couplets, but has become a compelling part of his life – getting up in the early hours every morning and juggling writing with commitments to family and teaching.
His poems are not translations but imitations that draw on his daily life and on the "holy book" which he sees as central to a way of life.
His wife Francesca observes her husband’s commitment to the project, and how his poetry provides him with a means to critique the modern world. She concludes that, while she prefers life to poetry, Edward seems to prefer poetry to life.
He writes out of a conviction that the role of poetry is to negotiate the boundaries between the material world and spiritual realms - an attempt to wake himself up as much as his audience.
Throughout the programme we also hear a developing sound track by the Italian Composer Corrado Fantoni who is setting some of Edward Clarke’s poems to music.

Waterton
Squire Waterton of Walton Hall was an eccentric Englishman and gentleman who made many visits to South America and wrote about his travels.
His travel books are "amongst the oddest I know" Sir David Attenborough tells us, written in an odd, almost biblical style. But nevertheless, they are accounts of natural history 200 years ago.
Attenborough argues that Waterton shouldn't be just remembered for his writing. He should be credited with establishing the first nature reserve in this country.
Appalled by the ravages of the industrial revolution's impact on the landscape, he built a wall around his estate to protect the wildlife - and free of charge allowed people to visit, which they did in their masses.

TUE 05:00 When Elvis Met The Beatles (b06671z4)
One night in 1965, Elvis Presley invited the young pretenders of pop, The Beatles, to visit him at his Los Angeles mansion.
Jeff Young’s drama is inspired by that secret meeting in Bel Air on 27th August.. That night is probably the most seismic meeting in music. No cameras, no recording equipment - and only those who were there really know what happened.
This imagined recreation is centred around music which breaks the ice between them – with listeners invited to be a fly on the wall.
Discover what songs were played on Elvis’ Jukebox and who sang what in a mythical jam session. This wasn’t just the meeting of the two biggest music names in history - it was passing of the baton from the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll to the upstarts from Liverpool.
Starring Tom Hughes as John Lennon and Kevin Mains as Elvis Presley.
Jeff Young says: “I was a big Beatles fan when I was younger, but for this project, initially, I knew very little about the Elvis and Beatles meeting. Then as I began researching the story, the strangeness of the meeting and the psychological dimensions, the dramatic opportunities became obvious. The larger than life characters involved, including Brian Epstein and Colonel Tom Parker, all set against a backdrop of corrupt American politics and the disastrous war in Vietnam, made for a strange and compelling narrative.
“The piece that has emerged is a kind of fake documentary. Elvis’s life was an American Tragedy and the seeds of it are sown here in this meeting between the King and the pretenders to the throne. The Beatles were so young, bewildered and overwhelmed by their rapid rise to fame. In writing this drama I went back my old Beatles records and I became a Beatles fan, all over again.”

Northamptonshire, let us be clear, is neither north, nor south nor in the Midlands. It floats somewhere between the three eyeing up the distinctiveness of each enviously.

Beatle Time
"There is something eerie, fated, cosmic about the Beatles" writes Adam Gopnik, writer for The New York Times. "They appear in public as a unit on August 22nd 1962 and disappear as a unit, Mary Poppins like, exactly seven years later".
In this talk, he ponders exactly what it is that makes their music endure. Why is it, he asks, that one of the things people never say is "I don't like the Beatles". For his children, he says, "the Beatles are as uncontroversial as the moon. Just there, shining on".
To underline how strange this is, he points out that had the same thing been true for his generation, then the pop music of his childhood would have dated from before the First World War. And that, he says "would have been more than bizarre".
Gopnik concludes that the reason their music lasts is that it was a perfect collaboration of opposites.

5. Strawberry Fields Forever
It’s hard to pinpoint whose idea it was but the characteristic moptop became a Beatles trademark, spawning thousands of imitation wigs. Their legacy lives on in unexpected ways.
Craig Brown presents a series of kaleidoscopic glimpses of the Beatles through time. Drawing on interviews, diaries, anecdotes, memoirs and gossip, he offers an entertaining series of vignettes that capture the mood of an era.
It’s a journey that takes us from 9th November 1961 when Brian Epstein first heard the four young men in a sweaty basement, via their mop top haircuts, to the jaw-dropping prices paid for the most trivial of memorabilia. And along the way there is the music, always the exuberant, the playful and ever-changing music.

FRI 20:00 The Frost Tapes (p0cl4xh8)
The Beatles
David Frost was the 20th century’s most prolific interviewer, a master of conversation with a remarkable talent for getting people to open up and spill their souls. Many of his conversations, however, have been lost - until now. Presented by his son, broadcaster Wilfred Frost, The Frost Tapes joins David as he interviews the greatest entertainers of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Paul McCartney’s working class roots, the story of George Harrison’s first guitar, John Lennon’s love of Hamburg, and Ringo Starr’s big break (as well as Pete Best’s not-so-big break). This is the story of the world’s greatest band, told to the world’s greatest interviewer.
A Paradine and Chalk & Blade production for BBC Radio 4 first broadcast in 2022.
FRI 20:30 Frankly Speaking (b05s8j39)

Brian Epstein, 29 year old manager of the Beatles talks about his life to Bill Grundy.
He was a quiet, well-spoken public schoolboy, RADA student, from a very comfortably-off Liverpool family. But knowing nothing of the world of pop - how did Epstein find himself in the world of agents and impresarios?
As well as the Beatles, he represented other artistes including Cilla Black. Three years after this interview, Brian Epstein tragically died at the age of 32, after reportedly taking his own life.
Launched in 1952, Frankly Speaking was a completely novel and ground breaking BBC series. Initially there were three interviewers and the series was both unrehearsed and unscripted.
First broadcast on the BBC Home Service in 1964.
FRI 21:00 The Curious Cases of Rutherford & Fry (m000qy47)
Series 17
The Noises That Make Us Cringe
Why do some people find noises like a fork scraping a plate so terrible? asks Findlay in Aberdeenshire. Rutherford and Fry endure some horrible noises to find out the answer.
Warning - This episode contains some horrible sounds
Trevor Cox, Professor of Acoustic Engineering at the University of Salford, has run experiments to find out the worst, most cringe-making sound. He divided horrible sounds into three categories: scraping sounds, like nails down a blackboard; disgusting sounds like a snotty sniffy nose; and sounds that make us cringe because of what we associate them with, like the dentist’s drill. All horrible sounds have some sort of association whether it’s a primal scream or fear of catching a disease, and they’re dealt with in the ancient part of the brain – the amygdala.
Professor Tim Griffiths is a Cognitive Neurologist at Newcastle University’s Auditory Cognition Group. He has been studying people with misophonia, a condition where ordinary, everyday sounds, such as someone eating or breathing causes a severe anxiety and anger response. Misophonia may affect around 15% of the population and Tim thinks that different parts of the brain – the insula and the motor cortex - are involved in this fight or flight response to seemingly innocuous sounds.
Cat Thomas’s job is to make horrible sounds. She is a foley artist at Boompost. If you watch Call the Midwife or Peaky Blinders, all the incidental sounds are created by Cat and her team. She also created some of the sounds for the horror film Camilla, which involved evisceration and disembowelling with the aid of some squishy oranges and bananas. Adam Rutherford and Hannah Fry try their own horror sounds when they chop off a finger with the aid of some large pasta shells, an orange and a knife.
