SAT 07:30 A Boy in the Water (Omnibus) (b0bhfnpz)
In September 1988, 11-year-old Tom Gregory became the youngest person ever to swim the English Channel, trained by a coach at his local swimming baths in Eltham, South East London.
Tom first went to the swimming baths in Eltham when he was seven. As one of the slowest swimmers in his class at school, he could barely make it across a width without taking a break half way. Despite a reluctant start, his potential was soon spotted by the coach who ran the club. John Bullet was an old-school disciplinarian and a maverick in the Channel Swimming establishment, who had an impressive track record for training distance swimmers. He had established a team of local kids who trained together in open water at Dover, in the cold waters of Windermere, and in London Docks.
When John singled Tom out as a Channel contender, Tom’s training began in earnest; as his ability and stamina became evident, his (and John’s) sights focussed on the world record for the youngest swimmer to make a solo crossing of the Channel.
As coach, mentor and inspiration John inspired extraordinary loyalty from his young swimmers. Tom and his older sister Anna were part of a close-knit group of young people who spent their holidays being mini-bussed around the country, camping out and listening to Top Twenty mix tapes, all the while training in conditions which would challenge swimmers of any age.
Tom describes the intensity and closeness of these five years of his life with affection and honesty; the account of his gruelling training and his record-breaking Channel swim, all before his twelfth birthday, is both exhilarating, and, to a generation brought up on stricter health and safety regulations, occasionally disquieting.
Tom’s world record still stands today and can never be broken; since his swim the qualifying age for an official Channel challenge has been raised to 16.
Tom Gregory went on to become an officer in the Royal Anglican Regiment and served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
He now lives in Surrey with his wife and daughter.

Known simply as "Aggers" to the army of fans devoted to BBC Radio's Test Match Special, his charm, knowledge and ready wit have gained him a place in the heart of anyone who loves the game.
His own infatuation began as a young boy at boarding school and along with his talent and determination it took him all the way to the top of the sport. He played for Leicestershire and England. His transition from the crease to the commentary box was cemented by one of the most memorable moments in broadcasting history - the notorious "legover" comment that prompted the legendary Brian Johnson to dissolve into helpless, prolonged giggles live on air.
He says "The great thing about our job is that you have no pre-conceived idea about what is going to happen - you have no script - the cricket is the script".

Taking a comic and poetic angle, Lemn Sissay compares reality against the treatment of children raised in care, orphans and foster children in popular culture. Because it surely says something about how we view them that we create so many for fiction?
No-one, really, believes they are doing evil.
Anakin Skywalker did not become Darth Vader because he liked being bad, he did it because he believed his pregnant wife was in danger - and so began his journey to the Dark Side.
In this final, and possibly toughest, episode, Lemn examines his bad choices; where he let himself do the wrong thing - and how he has attempted to make amends.
When must you let go of your memories and live?
Written and performed by Lemn Sissay.
Producer: Ed Morrish
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in October 2016.

MON 07:00 Red Thread: On Mazes and Labyrinths by Charlotte Higgins (b0bcg7hh)
1. Beginnings
Author and journalist Charlotte Higgins explores our ancient fascination with mazes and labyrinths, and reflects on their significance - in art and in mythology, in literature and in life.
Her own interest was inspired by a childhood visit to the palace of Knossos on the island of Crete - where, according to legend, King Minos ordered the construction of a labyrinth to house the half-bull, half-man Minotaur. The monstrous creature was slain by the hero Theseus, who famously managed to escape from the labyrinth with the help of a ball of red thread supplied by Minos's daughter, Ariadne.
"This is where it began," writes Higgins, "my longing for the labyrinth..."
It was also the beginning of her career as a classicist: "I tried to learn my way back there," she says, going on to study Greek and Latin at school and then at Oxford.
As for her own sense of direction: "I have never been able to find my way. Turn me loose in a city without a map and panic rises, as if I were a child who had lost the grip of a parent's hand in a crowd."
And in life? "What frightens me more than the wrong turns I have taken ... are the right turns, the ones I so nearly didn't take...."
Written and read by Charlotte Higgins.
Charlotte is the chief culture writer of the Guardian and the author of three previous books on the ancient world, including Under Another Sky: Journeys in Roman Britain, short-listed for the Baillie Gifford prize for non-fiction. She is also the author of This New Noise: the Extraordinary Birth and Troubled Life of the BBC.

True stories told live in the USA: Catherine Burns introduces stories from the double helix – tales featuring DNA inheritance.
The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.
The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.
Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.

She also describes the neuroscience behind the human being's sense of direction, the enlarged hippocampi of London cabbies, and how, on some level, "finding our way through life, building up stories about ourselves and making meaningful memories out of our experiences, may be twined together with our ability to navigate..."

Is That Machine On?
Stuart Maconie celebrates the golden age of the music press interview.
In the heyday of the printed music media between the mid-60s and early noughties, the music interview was many things - combative, intimate, confessional, unhinged, flirtatious, sometimes violent - but it was rarely dull. Still, it seems that long-gilded age of rock journalism is now over.
The days of extraordinary access, when a reporter might spend a week with a band on its tour bus or private plane, hanging out in their dressing rooms and hotel suites, are at an end. The music papers are gone. In 2018, NME - the last inky survivor - went online only.
Stuart Maconie looks back at the lost world - those revealing encounters between journalist and musician.
Featuring classic recorded archive interviews with Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Bob Marley and Michael Jackson – plus contributions from journalists Caitlin Moran, Barney Hoskyns, Allan Jones and Dawn Slough.

Author and journalist Charlotte Higgins explores our ancient fascination with mazes and labyrinths, and reflects on their significance - in art and in mythology, in literature and in life.
In this fourth reading from her book Higgins describes a meeting with maze-maker Adrian Fisher, who over a thirty-year career has designed forty-two hedge mazes and fifty-one mirror mazes - where glass is "set into the walls of tunnels to cast infinite reflections and to bewilder the eye completely." Solving mazes is a shared experience that binds families together, says Fisher - although Higgins notes that his wife Marie "is not a great one for mazes; or rather, she just likes to know she can get out of them..."
Charlotte Higgins also tells how artist Mark Wallinger chose to mark the 150th birthday of one of Britain's greatest and most famous subterranean mazes - the London Underground.

5. Nature
Author and journalist Charlotte Higgins explores our ancient fascination with mazes and labyrinths, and reflects on their significance - in art and in mythology, in literature and in life.
In this final reading from her book Higgins turns her attention from man-made mazes and discusses the magical properties of some mazes made by nature (but featured in art) - from the dark, impenetrable forests of the Grimms' fairy tales, to the snow-bowed pines of C.S. Lewis's Narnia, to the haunting and mysterious moonlit woods of Paolo Uccello's fifteenth-century painting The Hunt in the Forest* at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, "the first picture I dared to try to write about."
There are also some powerfully evocative childhood memories of a farm near her family home in Staffordshire, and the woods beside it which stretched down to the motorway that cut through the valley: "I loved those woods, but they frightened me. Whenever I went into them I could feel them closing in. The freedom of the fields and the low, rolling hills would be lost. The sky would disappear..."

FRI 20:00 The Single Life (b04xrv9z)
Second-hand shops are littered with tatty old 7 inch records that were self-made by bands.
Mark Hodkinson, who was in one of those bands, buys a handful of the singles and tracks down the people involved.
What happened to the dreams and ideals of people who created a lasting plastic monument to their youth? And how is the experience of making and packaging a 7 inch single different from the modern practice of up-loading a file to a website.
The DIY single took commitment and ingenuity. Hopeful bands would scrape together money to record, press, package and distribute their music in the hope of fame, fortune or at least an appearance on the radio. Now, the bargain bins of second-hand shops are full of these records and each one marks a significant milestone in someone's career. But a stepping-stone to where?
Mark Hodkinson, now a journalist, learns how people coped with the disappointment of failure and how they continue to try and satisfy their creative desires. He meets a saxophonist who once supported Adam Ant and now is a designer for a computer gaming company; a bassist who went on to marry a Bond villain; a guitarist who still hopes to make it big; and a singer who did make it big, and id still selling records 30 years later.

Series 2
Morals
Award winning comedian and super-sharp everywoman Angela Barnes tackles life and love and, with the help of the audience, packs herself a fantasy coffin.
In part tribute to Angela's beloved late father - a larger than life gregarious character, he was a sex shop manager, naturist, and a big fan of caravans and pranks - Angela celebrates his carpe diem approach to life, and his motto "You Can't Take It With You".
When her father died very suddenly in 2008, Angela and her family proved him wrong and stuffed his coffin with sentimental keepsakes for his final journey. Angela now does the very same thing, nominating objects that she would choose to send on with her as mementoes of her life, and asking the audience to share items they would take with them, all acting as prompts for contemplative, heart-warming and captivating comedy.
Angela Barnes is a vivacious, critically acclaimed stand-up comic from Maidstone, Kent. After a career in health and social care, at the age of 33, she decided to pursue a long-held ambition and give comedy a go. Within a couple of years, Angela and her witty worldview had won the 2011 BBC New Comedy Award by a public vote, secured a weekly star slot in Channel 4's Stand Up For The Week and appeared on numerous radio and television shows including Loose Ends, The Now Show, The News Quiz (BBC Radio 4), Russell Howard's Good News (BBC 3), and Mock The Week and Live at the Apollo (BBC 2). Ashley is already a well-known name in the Jewish community, having undertaken two critically acclaimed UK tours as well as performing sell-out shows in Israel, South Africa, Canada and Off-Broadway in New York. The Jewish press has described him as "the haredi Michael McIntyre".
As well as being a popular and experienced live performer, Ashley is also a comedy writer and producer for radio and TV. He was responsible for first unleashing Little Britain on an unsuspecting nation on Radio 4. But, being a strict orthodox Jew, he is surely the only person who works in TV without actually owning one.
