2. One More Time
Broadcaster Steve Penk digs out some of the funniest clips of live radio mistakes.
Plus, exclusive access to his own collection of audio material from around the world.
Radio bloopers have been around for as long as radio itself. They’re mainly endearing and add a humanising element to the radio and to the presenters on it.
A blooper is defined as an embarrassing public blunder, but as long as it's someone else's mistake, most of us are quite capable of getting past the embarrassment to enjoy the humour. The immediacy of live-to-air radio is part of its strength, but also very exposing. If there's a slip of the tongue, it's broadcast into the ether moments later, especially in the early days of broadcast radio when almost everything was done live on the air.
There have been some celebrated 'bloopers' over the years - from 'colourful' language, to laughing fits, technical glitches to amusing mispronunciations.
The second of a three-part compilation.

The Poetry of Instagram
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects The Poetry of Instagram featuring the work of Rupi Kaur.
Poets writing on the social media platform 'Instagram' have amassed millions of followers, and have a global audience that responds to their work instantaneously.
In this programme we explore the way readers all over the world react to the work of Rupi Kaur, one of the best known of these poets, and ask how 'Instagram' itself is influencing the form and style of poems (including the haiku of Johnathan Rice, who satirises the way we increasingly live through social media).
Rupi Kaur and Johnathan Rice are amongst the 'Instagram Poets' who are now so popular they have published books. Kaur's latest is 'the sun and her flowers' (Simon and Schuster), whilst Rice's is 'Farewell my Dudes: 69 Dystopian Haikus' (Hat and Beard Press).

SUN 23:30 Lemn Sissay's Origin Stories (b07wpf5q)
1. The Bed under the Stairs
Batman was an orphan; Lisbeth Salander, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, was an orphan; Superman was an orphan and a foundling. Cinderella was a foster child. Darth Vader - well, they can't all be winners.
Taking a comic and poetic angle, Lemn Sissay compares reality against the treatment of children raised in care, orphans and foster children in popular culture. Because it surely says something about how we view them that we create so many for fiction?
In this opening episode, Lemn compares his experiences as a foster child to the life of Harry Potter.
Like Harry, Lemn was never told the truth about what happened to his parents. Like Harry, he found his foster parents harsh and unforgiving. But, like Harry, he came through those problems, avoided the dementors, and grew up.
As well as storytelling, comedy and poetry, Lemn imagines an interview with Vernon and Petunia Dursley - Harry's foster parents. Finally, they get to tell their side of the story.
Written and performed by Lemn Sissay.
Producer: Ed Morrish
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in October 2016.

1. New York
Weeks after her fiancé, a musician who drowned on the Titanic dies, Emma Heyer is still inconsolable.
She reads the reports from the survivors endlessly. Each night she goes into fitful sleep, imagining the dead man’s final moments.
It’s a doubly tragic death because he only joined the ship at the last moment, substituting for another band member who fell ill.
It seems that he died heroically still playing with the other members of the ship’s band. But a disparity - which at first seems minor - is emerging about what they were playing as the ship sank.
Some who were on board are adamant it was the hymn Nearer My God To Thee. Others are equally insistent that it was a waltz tune, Song of Autumn.
It seems a simple matter to resolve. She takes the money she’s been saving for the wedding and travels to New York and the headquarters of the White Star line.
The officials have nothing to tell her and, although sympathetic to her loss, seem somewhat over anxious to get rid of her. Just what exactly are they hiding? It’s then that she meets Danny Gunther, a newspaper man hungry for a story.

Heroes, Icons & Superstars
True stories told live in the USA: Jay Allison introduces storytellers encountering the people they’ve always wanted to meet.
The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it.
Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.
The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.
Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.
The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.
First heard on PRX in the USA in March 2020.

Paul Weller (the A-Side)
Paul Weller talks about 'The Gift', the Jam's final album.
Series in which leading performers and songwriters talk about the album that made them or changed them.
Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios, each edition includes two episodes - the A-side and B-side.
In this one (The A side), John Wilson asks Paul about the album in question, and then, in the accompanying B-side, the audience puts the questions.
Both editions feature exclusive live performances.
30 years after the band's split, Paul discusses 'The Gift' - the last album for The Jam.
The band's only No 1 album, it marked a musical departure from the classic Jam sound to a more soul-influenced style, and it ushered in Weller's ideas for the Style Council. It was an album that didn't just focus on the state of society, it also had a lot to say about where music was going in the 1980s - and it included the classic No 1 'Town Called Malice' as well as 'Running On The Spot' and 'Carnation'.
Paul also plays exclusive live versions of some of the tracks on the album.
Complete versions of the songs performed in the programme (and others) can be heard on the 'Mastertapes' pages on the Radio 4 website, where all the programmes of the series can also be downloaded and other musical goodies accessed.

Episode 1
An unexpected phone call turns Matthew Heawood’s attention to a mystery in the gloom of Rendlesham Forest.
Folklore, paranormal, otherworldly? Up for debate, but fertile ground for a new investigative podcast, that’s for sure.
One question still lingers, will our host be re-joined by his roaming researcher, Kennedy Fisher?
The duo’s last venture patched together frantic updates from Baghdad, as they pursued suspected occultists in The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. Very little hope lingered of solving the mystery, and maybe even less that Kennedy would return home safe. But for now, a new investigation calls.
Following the success of The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, Radio 4 commissions a return to this HP Lovecraft-inspired universe.
Once again, the podcast embraces Lovecraft’s crypt of horror, braving the Sci-Fi stylings of The Whisperer in Darkness.
Henry Akeley, an old student from Dr Eleanor Peck’s folklore and witchcraft course, has gone missing.

Late-night comedy starring Simon Day and David Soul.
Written Sean Gray - one of the head writers of the BAFTA award-winning The Thick Of It.
In each episode, an unnamed, all-seeing narrator (David Soul) shows us that it is stupid to be worrying, as he looks back at some of the most entertaining apocalypses on parallel Earths.
Each week our case study is a normal bloke called Ian (Simon Day) who manages to accidentally initiate the apocalypse of a different parallel world through a seemingly harmless single act (telling a lie, being lazy, cooking some lambshanks).

3. Danger
With McBride now dead, feared murdered, it begins to dawn on Emma and Danny that their investigation in New York may be putting their own lives at grave risk.
Given the financial consequences of the Titranic’s loss – insurance claims are already running into the millions – the Marconi Company isn’t admitting any liability. Indeed, it seems to be reluctantly providing only the information it’s required to by law.
That’s still a considerable mass of material and, buried inside it, is a copy of a telegram which purported to come from the White Star line in the immediate aftermath of the first report of trouble. It countermanded the SOS, stating that the ship sustained minor damage, no one has been injured and it's steaming unhindered to New York.
"What if somebody sent that fake telegram to make money in the stock market?" Danny suggests.
Emma discovers two lists of names. One is the definitive list of the fifteen hundred or so people who died on the ship. The other is much shorter, but much more significant. It’s the names of those who were booked to travel on the Titanic but cancelled at the last moment. The names of those who stood to benefit by the sinking. And Danny claims he now knows what their motives were in wanting it go down and who were the real targets of what was, in effect, mass murder.

Lights, Camera, Inaction: An Existential Guide to the Movies
From Woody Allen to the Truman Show via Groundhog Day and Taxi Driver; Matthew Sweet examines the many and varied ways that cinema communicates existentialist ideas. Both in ways we expect and in ways that we don't (step forward Bridget Jones).
Cinema is very good at explaining Existentialism and capturing its various moods and feelings; but its deeper than that. The language of existentialism with its heroes, choices and crises sounds suspiciously like the language of screenwriting. They are, after all, both ways of trying to create meaning and narrative out of nothing. The blank page that confronts a screenwriter confronts all of us as we decide how to live. As Jean Paul Sartre, Simone De Beauvoir and Albert Camus would tell us - the blank page is us; the film of our lives is waiting to be made.
Films included in the programme:
The Music Box (1932) directed by James Parrott, produced by Hal Roach
Groundhog Day (1993) directed by Harold Ramis; produced by Harold Ramis and ‎Trevor Albert

4. Misinformation
The story that Danny tells seems fantastical but he backs it up with copious documentation.
The names he mentions – the Rothschilds, the Astors, JP Morgan and the Vanderbilts - are only vaguely known to Emma and he has to quickly sketch in who they are, the Robber Barons who control Wall Street and who are also are deeply involved in machinations in the City of London. They are among the the richest and most ruthless men in the world.
Some kind of high level dispute involving billions of dollars and the re-shaping of the world’s monetary order has made some of them the implacable enemies of the others. It seems to involve the creation of a central bank which will in effect be privately owned by Morgan’s allies.
Emma’s head has been spinning as she listens to this story, backed up as it is by newspaper reports and other documents. Is it true?
Danny says it’s for the reader to make up their own mind. He’s a journalist and, in the end, maybe in this modern world there can be two or three or even more alternative facts and realities.
When she asks what he means by saying that he might not publish the story, he says there might be a bigger payday in not publishing it.

With Danny missing, and Pinkertons in menacing mood, Emma’s certain she is facing an organised conspiracy. Or could she just be the victim of too much information?
She came to New York to find answers but has instead ended up in a maze of questions. Is Danny right – there is no objective truth? Will the technology of this new century, which promised to reveal it, offer only more ways to avoid and obscure it?

It all comes out in a rush – her grief at her fiancé’s death, inability to accept it, need to get answers, then her journey to New York and the bewildering things she’s found here.
When the doctor asks her if she’s any proof the alleged fiancé even existed, she says his letters to her and photograph are in her stolen purse. She has nothing to prove that he died, or that he ever lived. She doesn’t even have evidence of who she is herself.
"How long will I be here?" she asks.

The Sting in the Tail
"What’s the point of wasps?" asks listener Andrew, who is fed up with being pestered. For this series, with lockdown learning in mind, Drs Rutherford and Fry are investigating scientific mysteries for students of all ages. Do wasps do anything to justify their presence as a picnic menace?
Ecologist Seirian Sumner researches social wasp behaviour and champions their existence. Not only do yellow jacket wasps perform important ecological services as generalist pest controllers of aphids, caterpillars and flies in the UK, they have complex societies and may even perform pollination services, making them more like their better-loved bee cousins than many might think.
However, much remains unknown about wasps’ contribution to our ecosystem. Seirian works with entomologist Adam Hart, and together they run The Big Wasp Survey each summer, a citizen science project dedicated to find out more about UK wasp species and their populations. Prof. Hart sets up an experimental picnic with Dr Rutherford to try and attract some native wasps, and discusses why they are so maligned.
But in some parts of the world UK wasp species have become a major problem. Just after World War II, having unwittingly chosen some aircraft parts destined for New Zealand as their overwintering home, some wasp queens woke up in the city of Hamilton. With no natural predators or competitors, they quickly established a growing population. Fast forward to today, and by late summer the biomass of wasps becomes greater than all the birds, rodents and stoats in the southern island’s honeydew beech forests. Multiyear nests have been discovered that are over three metres tall and contain millions of wasps. Researcher Bob Brown is digging into wasp nests back in the UK to discover which species keep wasps in check here, and whether they might work as biological control.
This causes the doctors to ponder the problems of humans moving species around the planet. Accidental or even well-meaning introductions all too often become invasive. As climate change and urbanisation accelerate, wasps may become more helpful in some ways and more harmful in others.

Award winning comedian and super-sharp everywoman Angela Barnes tackles life and love and, with the help of the audience, packs herself a fantasy coffin.
In part tribute to Angela's beloved late father - a larger than life gregarious character, he was a sex shop manager, naturist, and a big fan of caravans and pranks - Angela celebrates his carpe diem approach to life, and his motto "You Can't Take It With You".
When her father died very suddenly in 2008, Angela and her family proved him wrong and stuffed his coffin with sentimental keepsakes for his final journey. Angela now does the very same thing, nominating objects that she would choose to send on with her as mementoes of her life, and asking the audience to share items they would take with them, all acting as prompts for contemplative, heart-warming and captivating comedy.
Angela Barnes is a vivacious, critically acclaimed stand-up comic from Maidstone, Kent. After a career in health and social care, at the age of 33, she decided to pursue a long-held ambition and give comedy a go. Within a couple of years, Angela and her witty worldview had won the 2011 BBC New Comedy Award by a public vote, secured a weekly star slot in Channel 4's Stand Up For The Week and appeared on numerous radio and television shows including Loose Ends, The Now Show, The News Quiz (BBC Radio 4), Russell Howard's Good News (BBC 3), and Mock The Week and Live at the Apollo (BBC 2).
