SAT 07:30 The Stopping Places by Damian Le Bas (Omnibus) (b0b5s33n)
Damian Le Bas inhabits an awkward middle ground between the non-gypsy world and his own traveller/gypsy heritage.
He grew up in West Sussex in a house built by his grandfather on land the family owned, surrounded by a field that was half car-breaking business, half farmyard. Scattered bits of engines lay alongside bales of hay, brand new trucks were surrounded by geese and terriers. But twice a week they drove an hour each way to their family pitch in the market square of Petersfield where they sold flowers.
Along the way, his elders would nod towards lay-bys and verges, naming them as they passed. These were the ‘atchin tans’ or stopping places. His great grandmother, Nan, explained to him that they were the places where she and her family used to live in the days of wagons and bender tents. Sometimes they would stop for a few days, other times for a few years.
Damian's parents both had faith in education and, when they saw that he was bright, he applied for for a full scholarship at the nearby boarding school - Christ's Hospital - which led to ten grade A O-Levels, A Levels and theology at Oxford.
Damian was now firmly an outsider in both worlds.
But having plundered the Bodleian Library for histories of gypsies, he felt the need to get out into the world and discover the topography of his ancestors. So he with his Nan's blessing he set out to visit the stopping places, sometimes alone and sometimes accompanied by his wife Candis.
As we follow his journey, we also learn about the history of the gypsies and their marginalised place in society today.

Out of the Blue
True stories told live in the USA: Jay Allison introduces tales where surprises, unanticipated lessons and plot twists abound.
The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA.
Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.
The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.
Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.
The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.
First heard on PRX in 2020.

1. The Town of Bent Necks
Trainers? Sneakers? Whatever you call them - they are amongst the most iconic cultural objects of our time.
But their evolution is a story rarely told until now.
Sneakernomics is a close encounter with the visionaries, artisans and journeymen who’ve made, and been made, by trainers. We’ll follow in the footsteps of mavericks, hustlers and dreamers, and hear their tales of boom and bust, fame and infamy, hope and heartbreak.
It’s 100 years since salesman Chuck Taylor joined Converse and the Chuck Taylor All-Star was born, perhaps the most iconic trainer of all time. Across 9 episodes, we trace the extraordinary transformation that has happened since.
Sneakernomics tells the origin story of some of the world’s biggest brands and of how sponsorship deals and celebrity culture re-defined our relationship with products. It’s also a business story; of how leisure has evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry; a sports story - of how games became organised and grew into a global spectacle; and it’s also a story of invention - of how enthusiastic hobbyist-pioneers often took extraordinary risks that changed the course of sport and fashion.
The sneaker story is characterised by fierce competition and rivalry. We explore how the quest to be No. 1 tore families and friendships apart, divided towns, and sometimes even distorted sporting ideals.
Above all, this is the story of the people behind the shoes. What you’ll hear is a mix of interviews with many of the key individuals who’ve played their part in that extraordinary story, interlaced with moments of fiction inspired by their testimonies and our research.
Presented by Nicholas Smith, (author of Kicks: The Great American Story of Sneakers) and 1xtra presenter Ace, with drama written by multi award-winning playwright and screenwriter Al Smith.

3. The Brotherhood
Charlotte and Lillian are back, spending time together as part of a Befriend the Elderly scheme.
They may bicker about everything from signs of dementia to the appeal of Harry Styles, but underneath it’s clear they are two kindred spirits. Two selfish, self-absorbed spirits, but ones who mirror and rely on each other nonetheless.
Very nearly 30, Charlotte is still living at home with her parents and chronically unable to figure out what to do with her life. Beneath her attempt at do-gooding is barely disguised despair. She's terrified she is no good. Useless. Unloveable. She looks to Lillian to provide some meaning to her life - if she can help to improve Lillian’s life somehow, she’d feel a lot better about her own. And there’s all the kudos and social media likes that come with charity work - not to mention the lure of Lillian's large spare room.
Charlotte is forced to intervene when Lillian gets in too deep with a group from the local church with a suspicious – and all-too familiar – agenda.
When Lillian’s new friends turn up at the door, she and Charlotte hide. Until they’re caught red-handed, that is.
Lillian realises there’s nothing for it but to claim Charlotte is holding her hostage.

TUE 21:00 Sneakernomics (p09fy1zk)
2. Dassler vs. Dassler
Across nine episodes, Sneakernomics tells the extraordinary origin stories of some of the world’s biggest brands, and how sponsorship deals and celebrity culture redefined our relationship with products. It’s also a business story – how leisure has evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry; a sports story – how games became organised and grew into a global spectacle; and it’s a story of invention – how enthusiastic hobbyist-pioneers often took extraordinary risks that changed the course of sport and fashion.
The sneaker story is characterised by fierce competition and rivalry. We explore how the quest to be number one tore families and friendships apart and divided towns. Above all, this is the story of the people behind the shoes. What you’ll hear is a mix of interviews with many of the key individuals who’ve played their part in that extraordinary story, interlaced with moments of fiction inspired by their testimonies and our research.
Written and presented by Nicholas Smith, with 1Xtra presenter Ace. The drama is written by Al Smith.

TUE 22:00 Mark Watson Talks a Bit About Life (m001jkwd)
Series 4
Wednesday's Child Is...
Multi-award winning comedian and author Mark Watson continues his probably doomed, but luckily funny quest to make sense of the human experience.
This series is about time - the days of the week, the stages of our existence - and the way we use it to make sense of things. We make our way through the working week, tonight considering 'hump day' - Wednesday. Wednesday's child, famously, is full of woe. Both Mark and Esther are in this category. Is the woe a real issue or merely a fairy tale? What is the bleakest joke ever told by a four-year-old? And what would Thomas Hardy make of this series?
Expect jokes, observations and interactions galore as Mark is aided, and sometimes obstructed, by the sardonic musical excellence of Flo & Joan. There's also a hand-picked comedy colleague each week - here, we welcome Esther Manito.

Craft Work by Selina Thompson
Living in a caravan on the east coast of Ireland, a woman comes face-to-face with fear. An original short work for radio by Selina Thompson.
Selina Thompson is an artist and performer based in Leeds. Her work is playful, participatory and intimate, focused on the politics of identity, and how this defines our bodies, lives and environments. She has made work for pubs, cafes, hairdressers, toilets, galleries, theatres - and now radio. Past work includes 'Salt', where she retraced one of the routes of the Transatlantic Slave Triangle on a cargo ship across the Atlantic, and 'Chewing The Fat', her own version of a midnight feast: somewhere between the confessions made over coffee at weight-watchers, and the sloppy drunken story-telling that accompanies that 3AM kebab.

The Advance Guard of the Avant-garde
In the 1960s, a group of writers set about shaking up the polite conventions of the British realist tradition through a whole range of experimental approaches.
Sound poets created some of the strangest programmes ever broadcast by the BBC, while the likes of BS Johnson cut holes in the pages of his novels - and in the case of his book 'The Unfortunates' published the unbound chapters in a box for the reader to mix up and read in whatever order they wished.
Johnson and similarly minded writers like Ann Quin, Bob Cobbing, Alan Burns and Christine Brooke-Rose were prominent in their day, appearing regularly on TV and radio, but they've now largely been forgotten.
Using some of the rich archive these writers left behind, DJ Taylor sets out to tell their story, with the help of Johnson's biographer Jonathan Coe, editor of a new Ann Quin collection Jennifer Hodgson, novelist Eimear McBride and poetry critic Jeremy Noel Tod.
Borrowing some of their techniques Taylor argues that while we may no longer talk about this group of determinedly experimental figures, many of today's most prominent writers, from David Mitchell to Alice Oswald, owe them a debt of gratitude.
Producer: Geoff Bird
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in March 2018.

4. A Fistful of Shoes

“When George Floyd was killed and seemingly overnight all of New York came to smell like fresh plywood, I thought of Schenectady…”
“Fresh Caught Haddock” is David’s response to the BLM marches which took place in New York City, during the Covid pandemic and following the death of George Floyd. It was a period of tremendous social upheaval across the United States but not without humour, and in this story, David reflects characteristically on his experiences as a wry observer on the foibles of human behaviour.
The programme wraps up with a brief question and answer session with the studio audience, where we learn what David thinks about learning foreign languages.

THU 22:30 Paul Sinha's History Revision (b04sxr8s)
Series 1
Food
Paul Sinha looks through all of human history and examines how we came to be where we are.
He starts with something every day, something we all know to be true; he then reveals the quirks of history and the fascinating stories that led up to this point.
This time it's food. Paul’s starting point is his own high street in south London. What historical events gave his hometown its name? But more than that - how did it end up being culinarily dominated by Chinese and Indian restaurants?
The story starts in 1600 and takes in trade, invasion, opium, a bloody civil war that left 30,000,000 people dead, giant greenhouses and the cultivation of saffron.
Paul Sinha is an acclaimed stand-up who was nominated for the Edinburgh Comedy award for his show Saint or Sinha? He frequently appears on The News Quiz, The Now Show, and Fighting Talk. He is a resident 'chaser' on the ITV quiz show The Chase with several of his own series on BBC Radio 4.

John muses over the proverb "children should be seen and not heard" and looks back into his own childhood, and the phrase's old high English origins.
The learning of children fascinates John, left to interpret the world himself by his Irish family. Gorilla warfare? How does that work? Perhaps the barbary apes of Gibraltar have more of a chance.

Series 2

No professional care-worker can afford to miss Beauty Olonga's survival guide to Britain – with overheated houses, disappointing church services and world-class charity shops.
Series 2 sees Beauty sent by the Featherdown Agency to provide care for those who need it - and some who don't, but all of whom have relatives with guilty consciences.
Beauty sees herself as an inspiration to other African girls hoping to live the dream in Britain – a land of opportunities. The professional classes are off sick through binge drinking and the rest too lazy to get off the couch to answer the pizza delivery man.
The series breaks the embarrassed silence about what happens to us when we get old and start to lose our faculties. It’s a chaotic, tragi-comedy, from Beauty’s point of view, whose Zimbabwean Shona background has taught her to respect age.
Beauty is sent to look after Sarah, who lives with both her mother and daughter. A perfect, happy modern family, like the kind Beauty has seen in feel-good British movies. With her own family being very demanding, it is understandable when Beauty begins to get too close.
