SAT 07:30 Milk of Paradise by Lucy Inglis (Omnibus) (b0bfxfcs)
Derived from the juice of the poppy, it relieves our pain and cures our insomnia. It may even inspire great art.
It also causes addiction, misery and death.
Historian Lucy Inglis’s book explores man’s long and complex relationship with opium.
“In mankind’s search for temporary oblivion,” writes Inglis, “opiates possess a special allure. Since Neolithic times, opium has made life seem, if not perfect, then tolerable for millions. However unlikely it seems at this moment, many of us will end our lives dependent on it.”
In 17th Century England the invention of laudanum – an easy-to-swallow opium tincture – led to “a new age in drug-taking.”
A century later, laudanum became popular with writers of the Romantic movement such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge, whose great poem Kubla Khan was famously inspired by a drug-induced dream when he was a young man of 25. (He died aged 61, a housebound addict.)
In the American Civil War morphine was used extensively to relieve the pain of wounded soldiers. After the war, drug addiction among former soldiers was so common it became known as “the army disease.”
But it was the Vietnam War a century later that brought the idea of the “junkie soldier” into popular culture.
Today, heroin addiction remains a global problem:
“Where opiates and opioids are available,” says the author, “people will consume them.”

Between the Ears - Re:Union
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Between the Ears - Re:Union in which Owen Sheers' explores the idea of a nation coming into being.
A collaboration between between radio producer Steven Rajam and Welsh writer Owen Sheers, this radio poem explores the complex, often difficult, links between modern Welsh identity and rugby union, the national sport.
The poem is woven around the sounds and sensations of a real international matchday: the violence of the training pitch, the crowds thronging to the centre of Cardiff, the intensity of the stadium - and much more.
Complementing the young player's story are contributions from social historians, the groundsman at the Millennium Stadium, a player turned acclaimed poet, and 7 year-old superfans Dylan and Alfie - who show us how real Welsh rugby should be played - with a team of their teddies.
Voiced by Scott Arthur.

2. The Rival
Charlotte and Lillian are back, spending time together as part of a Befriend the Elderly scheme.
They may bicker about everything from signs of dementia to the appeal of Harry Styles, but underneath it’s clear they are two kindred spirits. Two selfish, self-absorbed spirits, but ones who mirror and rely on each other nonetheless.
Very nearly 30, Charlotte is still living at home with her parents and chronically unable to figure out what to do with her life. Beneath her attempt at do-gooding is barely disguised despair. She's terrified she is no good. Useless. Unloveable. She looks to Lillian to provide some meaning to her life - if she can help to improve Lillian’s life somehow, she’d feel a lot better about her own. And there’s all the kudos and social media likes that come with charity work - not to mention the lure of Lillian's large spare room.
Lillian meanwhile is still her ebullient self, but her facade hides a nagging fear of what's to come - her body is giving up on her. Lillian's motto is still 'Keep Buggering On' – aka keep getting at Charlotte – but increasingly, she’s forced to wonder why. She masks all this by doubling down and manipulating Charlotte into carrying out all her menial tasks. If Charlotte won’t do them, there are plenty of other volunteers who will.
Lillian leaves Charlotte an answerphone message telling her not to come round any more, but Charlotte doesn't take rejection lying down. She turns up at Lillian’s house unannounced, where things go from bad to worse when she discovers she has a rival for Lillian’s approval.

Series 4
Episode Two: Tuesday's Child Is...
Multi-award winning comedian and author Mark Watson continues his probably doomed, but luckily funny quest to make sense of the human experience.
This series is about time - the days of the week, the stages of our existence - and the way we use it to make sense of things. We make our way through the working week - tonight it's Tuesday. What does 'full of grace' mean in a secular world? Why is it so hard to swim in a straight line? And why did a crumpet almost wreck Mark's relationship with his son?
Expect jokes, observations and interactions galore as Mark is aided, and sometimes obstructed, by the sardonic musical excellence of Flo & Joan. There's also a hand-picked comedy colleague each week - this time it's the turn of Angela Barnes.

WED 07:30 Sarah Kendall: Talking Story (m000xfhh)
Nikesh Shukla
Sarah Kendall talks to three different storytellers about what ‘story’ means to them.
How have they developed their own style of storytelling in their respective mediums?
In this episode, Sarah talks to author Nikesh Shukla about the importance of truth in storytelling.
Sarah started out as a stand-up comic in late 1990s Australia. After performing for 15 years around the world, she transitioned into storytelling.
Sarah wanted to create something on stage that felt like the sort of films she loved to watch, so she wrote an hour-long show with a single personal story. She reimagined her teenage years as though they had been directed by John Hughes, giving her memories a full, cinematic makeover.
This connected Sarah to her audience in a more meaningful way compared to her original joke-based routines.

Malcolm McLaren: Spectacular Failure
Malcolm McLaren's reputation was shaped by his mis-management of the Sex Pistols. But he was much more than the Svengali of punk.
Cultural commentator Paul Gorman, who worked with Malcolm, gives a new spin on his achievement.
He roots him in the art school movement of the 1960s when, less concerned with selling records, McLaren wanted to shake things up - the grip of authority , the power of the corporations, the risk aversion of the record companies, the complacency and dreariness of English life.
Paul tells the punk story rather differently before launching into the years in which Malcolm, as a solo performer and music collaborator, stole a march on many in the industry. He scored a first with introducing the UK to what became known as world music, and on to hip hop, to scratching and to Voguing.
He had a serious crack at becoming Speilberg's ideas man in Hollywood, at becoming London Mayor, and at staging a musical about Christain Dior.
Not everything worked - but as Malcolm suggested - better to be a spectacular failure than a benign success.

It was the biggest sporting event on the planet, a billion people watching 25 or so Germans and Argentinians play football in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
How did we end up here? It's a story that takes in 15th-century explorers, the slave trade, mass immigration, industrialisation, and British Army medical tests. Because no-one and nothing exists in a vacuum.

Not Oxford, nor Llandudno, but Croft-on-Tees.
Since the publication of one of the most famous and internationally popular children’s books of all time, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, biographers and amateur enthusiasts have pored over the stories hunting for clues and trying to find the key to unlock the secret puzzles of Wonderland and Lewis Carroll’s life. The world of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass have come to be almost entirely associated with Oxford - but in this programme, Simon Farnaby, the star of Horrible Histories, uncovers Lewis Carroll’s roots in the North East of England.
Like Lewis Carroll, Simon Farnaby, grew up in Croft-on-Tees in North Yorkshire and went to school in nearby Richmond. Returning to the North East, he visits the Rectory Gardens where, as a boy, he scavenged in the bushes for Lewis Carroll memorabilia and meets the people determined to claim Carroll for the North-East.
Chris Lloyd introduces him to the Cheshire Cat and tells the story of the Jabberwocky’s inspiration, The Sockburn Worm. Simon finds the grave of brave Sir John Conyers, the dragon’s slayer on a lonely peninsula in the Tees. Bryan Talbot, graphic artist and author of Alice in Sunderland, makes the case for the Sunderland connection and Michael Wilcox, a relative of Lewis Carroll’s Whitburn cousins, sets Simon his own puzzle to solve. Could Lewis Carroll have seen his first plays at the Georgian Theatre in Richmond?

Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte by Maurice Ravel
Ravel's beautiful Pavane For A Dead Princess touches many people.
While it is not actually about a dead princess it does evoke a sense loss. For Carla van Raay it symbolises the loss of innocence she experienced after sexual abuse as a child which led her to make some difficult life choices.
Deal Hudson played it to prisoners in Atlanta and was moved by their reaction. At an academy for troubled teenagers in California the Pavane had a similar effect.
Genevieve Monneris comes from the town where Ravel was born on the border with Spain. Her film Henri and Pat tells the story of three French airman who were stationed in York during World War Two. Just days before Henri's plane was shot down the three young men went to a concert of Ravel's music in York. So the piece has a strong emotional meaning for Genevieve whose own father was also stationed with the RAF in York.
Professor Barbara Kelly of the Royal Northern College of Music explains the background to the Pavane's composition and why it appeals to the emotions in such a powerful way.
Although it was written at the end of the 19th century it became more widely known in the 1920s. That was when a young woman called Lucia Joyce daughter of James Joyce danced to it with her avant garde dance group. The writer Annabel Abbs tells Lucia's tragic story of how her life ended in a mental asylum and how she almost became the imaginary 'dead princess'.
