My Muse - Kathryn Williams on Sylvia Plath
Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and chooses: My Muse - Kathryn Williams on Sylvia Plath.
The award-winning singer songwriter Kathryn Williams was motivated to write an entire album, Hypoxia, by the work of the poet Sylvia Plath.
Kathryn was commissioned to write some songs for the Durham Book Festival to mark the 50th anniversary of Sylvia Plath's death and the publication of her novel, The Bell Jar. She wanted to write something that got away from the popular tragic image of Sylvia Plath who killed herself at the age of just 30.
Instead Kathryn wanted to focus on the writing. Plath is considered one of the greatest poets of the 20th century.
Once the commission was over Kathryn couldn't stop writing and decided these songs would be her next album. She got stuck and called on the singer songwriter and producer Ed Harcourt for help, who features in this programme.
Kathryn also speaks to Andrew Wilson author of Mad Girl's Love Song, a biography of Plath's early life. They meet at Parliament Hill Fields, one of the many places in England that inspired Plath.
Another is Hardcastle Crags in West Yorkshire where Kathryn goes on a walk with the poet Sarah Corbett, author of And She Was. For the first time - and amidst cracking thunder - Kathryn visits the grave of Sylvia Plath along with Gail Crowther, author of The Haunted Reader and Sylvia Plath.
Kathryn wants to concentrate on Plath's work, not her death, so ends with Deryn Rees-Jones, also a poet and a critic and Professor of Poetry at Liverpool University, where a collection of some of Plath's manuscripts are held.

MON 05:00 We're Backing Britain (b0bkrcs4)
Based on the true story of the 1968 'I'm Backing Britain' campaign.
Britain's economy is teetering on the brink. Strikes, devaluation and rejection from the Common Market are making Prime Minister Harold Wilson's life a misery.
The Labour government has been fighting budget deficits with austerity measures, while struggling with a small Commons majority and attempting to change Britain's relationship with Europe. A cloud of doom and gloom seems to be descending over the country after the heady days of the Swinging Sixties.
What the country needs is some Dunkirk spirit - to wave the Union Jack from the White Cliffs and fight back.
When the typists of Colt Ventilation decide to work half an hour a day for free to help the country fight economic hard times, they are championed by the great and good. But they have unwittingly put their local shop steward on a collision course with the union big boys.
Initially encouraged by Wilson, the idea of working for free is loved by the right and quickly hated by the left. Labour is put under pressure by the TUC to quash this "economic illiteracy".
David Morley's satirical play takes us back to the doom and gloom of Great Britain in the late 1960s, and shines a light on the industrial strife of the 70s.

Birth
Following on from her hugely successful, award-winning series – ‘Minds The Gap’ and ‘Utopia’, Bridget Christie turns her attention to Mortality
Like many of us forced to work from home during Covid lockdown, Bridget recorded this series herself in her house, and in her local park, on a pre-sanitised recording device sent to her in the post. Batteries weren’t included. She had to buy them all herself.
In a collection of informative, personal and absurd recordings, she confronts the difficult questions most of us spend our lives avoiding - all whilst being interrupted by cats, chores, children, foxes and a plumber.
“Do twins share a soul or do they get one each?”, “Why don’t we bury our placentas and plant a tree on top of them?” and “Who’s blocked the toilet again?”
If you are mortal, then this is the show for you.
Written and performed by Bridget Christie
With guest appearances from her dad, sister Eileen and friend Ash
Following episodes cover 'Life’, ‘Death’ and ‘The Afterlife’.

Right to be Forgotten
Radiolab explores an online world where that story about you lives forever. Can we shake our internet past?
In an online world, that story about you lives forever. The tipsy photograph of you at the college football game? It’s up there. That news article about the political rally you were marching at? It’s up there. A DUI? That’s there, too. But what if ... it wasn’t.
In Cleveland, Ohio, a group of journalists are trying out an experiment that has the potential to turn things upside down: they are unpublishing content they’ve already published. Photographs, names, entire articles. Every month or so, they get together to decide what content stays, and what content goes. On today’s episode, reporter Molly Webster goes inside the room where the decisions are being made, listening case-by-case as editors decide who, or what, gets to be deleted. It’s a story about time and memory; mistakes and second chances; and society as we know it.
This episode was reported by Molly Webster, and produced by Molly Webster and Bethel Habte.
Special thanks to Kathy English, David Erdos, Ed Haber, Brewster Kahle, Imani Leonard, Ruth Samuel, James Bennett II, Alice Wilder, Alex Overington, Jane Kamensky and all the people who helped shape this story.

WED 07:30 Sarah Kendall: Talking Story (m000x0vb)
Chris Addison
In this series, Sarah talks to three different storytellers about what ‘story’ means to them and about how they developed their own style of storytelling in their respective mediums.
Sarah Kendall started her career as a stand-up comedian in the late 90s in Australia. After 15 years performing stand-up comedy in comedy clubs and at festivals around the world, Sarah moved away from the more traditional joke telling aspect of the job and transitioned into storytelling.
Sarah wanted to create something on stage that felt like the sort of films she loved to watch, so she wrote an hour-long show that was one single story as opposed to a series of jokes and routines. She reimagined her teenage years as though they had been directed by John Hughes, giving her memories a full, cinematic makeover.
She found, in telling these personal stories, that she was connecting with her audience in a way that was more meaningful to her and in a way that she wasn’t able to with the jokes and routines in her previous shows.
In this episode comedian, writer, actor, director Chris Addison recalls his journey from joke writing to screen writing and directing, discussing his relationship with storytelling across his broad body of work.
Sarah’s live storytelling shows have been adapted for BBC Radio 4 and have formed two seasons of her series - ‘Sarah Kendall: Australian Trilogy’. The show went on to win numerous awards including the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Award and the BBC Audio Drama Award. Since then, Sarah has gone on to write and star in the Royal Television Society award winning and BAFTA nominated sitcom ‘Frayed’.

"Ooh Betty!" it's a celebration of the BBC's hit TV comedy about the disaster-prone lives of hapless Frank Spencer and his long-suffering wife Betty.

In this behind-the-scenes documentary, scriptwriter Ray reveals his difficulty in getting the show commissioned – and how Michael Crawford wasn't first choice to play Frank.
The show's legendary daring stunts were co-ordinated by Stuart Fell who admits it was "ambitious for the BBC" at the time. Michele Dotrice recalls how filming on the edge of a cliff was "a bit hairy" and reveals her mother's reaction when the stunt hit TV screens.
Classic clips and rare archive appearances are interwoven amongst fresh and in-depth interviews in this celebration of the BBC's comedy classic.

WED 23:45 I, Regress (b019rqcx)
Series 1
Episode 4
A dark, David Lynch-ian comedy, ideally suited for an unsettling and surreal late night listen. 'I, Regress' sees Matt Berry (The IT Crowd, Garth Marenghi's Dark Place, Snuff Box) playing a corrupt and bizarre hypnotherapist taking unsuspecting clients on twisted, misleading journeys through their subconscious.
Each episode sees the doctor dealing with a different client who has come to him for a different problem (quitting smoking, fear of water, etc). As the patient is put under hypnosis, we 'enter' their mind, and all the various situations the hypnotherapist takes them through are played out for us to hear. The result is a dream- (or nightmare-) like trip through the patient's mind, as funny as it is disturbing.
Episode 4: Ray Highknock (Alex Lowe) goes to Dr Matt Berry hoping that his experimental regressive hypnotherapy will cure his smoking addiction. The result is a series of strange encounters that all seem strangely familiar...
The cast across the series include Katherine Parkinson (IT Crowd), Morgana Robinson (The Morgana Show), Simon Greenall (I'm Alan Partridge), Jack Klaff (Star Wars, For Your Eyes Only), Tara Flynn (The Impressions Show, Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle), Alex Lowe (Barry From Watford, The Peter Serafinowicz Show), and Derek Griffiths (Playschool, Bod, and The Royal Exchange).
A compelling late night listen: tune in and occupy someone else's head!
Produced by Sam Bryant.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in January 2012.

THU 22:00 Prepper (m0002g7v)
Series 1
The Kit in Your Head
Comedy with Sue Johnston and Pearl Mackie.
Trump. ISIS. The Courgette Crisis. Signs of civilisation’s fragility are all around. No wonder the Doomsday Clock just nudged closer to midnight. In this fearscape, more and more ordinary people are wondering how they’d cope if everything we take for granted (law and order, access to healthcare, iceberg lettuces in Sainsburys) was taken away.
Preppers - a large and rapidly growing global community - have taken this thought one step further. They’re actively skilling-up, laying down supplies and readying themselves for the end of the world, in whatever form it comes. Indeed, a prepping shop just opened in Newquay. And if people in Cornwall are prepping, it’s time to worry.
Imagine if Woman’s Hour made a podcast about preparing for the end times. Prepper follows neurotic, debt-ridden Rachel and hard-as-nails ‘Churchill in Spanx’ Sylvia, working class Mancunians who prep and podcast, sharing knowledge with their community, and showing off just how Armageddon-ready they are.
Told through their podcasts from Sylvia’s garage and featuring ‘apoco-tips’, ‘end of days drills’ and interviews with preppers from around the world, Prepper comically explores how two mismatched women live with the possibility of the end of days, and how they bond over their determination to survive. And fend off zombies.

THU 23:00 Athena's Cancel Culture (m000vh6n)
Episode 4
Over the last few years, if a celebrity has ever said or done anything remotely controversial, then they've probably been cancelled. Largely performed through social media, some describe it as necessary evil to help democratise the internet and reflect the expectancy of an artist’s audience, for others it’s just a chance to shut up gobby celebs!
Whatever your view, it certainly helps empower fans by diminishing celebrity cultural capital and helping keep their egos and opinions in check. It's a growing phenomenon that's left almost no one unscathed, from comedians and actors to musicians and TV hosts. It’s also happening to the not so famous - remember the bin cat lady?
With stand up and sketch comedy, Athena explores cancel culture and the world of offence in modern times. Over four episodes, Athena will help explain the phenomenon of cancel culture among celebrities, look at the history of offence, and offer up some cancel rules for guidance. Athena then puts all that cancel knowledge to the test on her own social media activity from 10 years ago. There’s just no escape from cancel culture justice, even for Athena!

FRI 20:00 Marc Riley's Musical Time Machine (b05107zk)
Series 1
Frank Zappa and Lou Reed
The BBC's archive is justifiably and inarguably world-famous, but most of this attention and praise is showered on the riches contained within the Beeb's music archive - the life-changing Peel performances, seminal sessions from Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and David Bowie.
But these musical marvels risk over-shadowing another archive that's just as diverse, rich and rewarding - the BBC's spoken word, music archive.
As long as there have been pop stars, the BBC has spoken to them. Marc Riley and his trusty Time Machine - a rickety rust-bucket, back-firing jalopy - travel back through the years to visit the great and the good, the famous and the infamous, safely ensconced within the treasure trove of the BBC archive. Marc replays candid snapshots at crucial points in the careers of some of the biggest names in music.
In each episode, Marc lines up the Time Machine to travel to two different points in time and revisit two interviews with something in common - a person or place, a shared influence or ideology, a discovery, a misunderstanding.
In the second programme, interviews share a fierce rivalry. Both artists were intent on creating grown-up rock 'n roll, both pushed the boundaries of rock music. Both were anti-establishment, both were anti-hippy. Both were the kings of their exciting new scenes - one in New York, one in LA. Yet, despite the similarities and the common ground, each loathed the other. First there's Frank Zappa in conversation with Radio 1's Andy Batten-Foster from 1984, while the second interview comes from a 1992 interview by Johnnie Walker with Lou Reed.
Producer: Ian Callaghan

Series 29
Toto's Africa
Released in 1982, this soft-rock anthem has become an unlikely viral smash-hit.
Africa by Toto is a song that has changed lives, helped to raise thousands of pounds for charity and provided an unexpected musical corner-stone in a critically acclaimed play. Telling their personal stories in Soul Music:
Ralf Schmidt is the Artistic Director of Ndlovu Youth Choir which is made up of young people from the poorest parts of South Africa. Incredibly, the choir made it to the final of America's Got Talent, one of the biggest entertainment shows in the world. Ralf's exuberant, irresistible and uniquely African arrangement of Toto's Africa was their stand-out performance. (Brief extract of AGT (c) Fremantle USA and Syco Entertainment)
Michael Savage (aka DJ Michael Vinyl) of Prime Cuts record shop in Bristol, staged what could be considered a night of torture when he played Africa non-stop for twelve hours at a club. As Mike and Olivia Perry recall, this was to raise money for the Bristol based charity, Temwa, which operates in Malawi. They expected a handful of people to turn up, but the event had worldwide attention and was a huge success.
Mike Massé's life was completely changed following his release on YouTube of what many consider to be one of the best Africa cover-versions ever recorded. The main photo is of Mike Massé (photo credit: Jim Mimna).
David Greig is the Artistic Director of the Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh; an esteemed playwright with intellectual clout. So, why did he include Africa in one of his plays? Well, he nearly didn't, but then he saw the light.
And, Abigail Gardner, a reader in music at the University of Gloucestershire, explains why Africa - originally a US No. 1 for just a week in 1982 - has recently undergone a strange modern rebirth, making it one of the most streamed songs on the internet.

Goodbye
Richard Wilson returns with another series of not quite true revelations about his life. Jon Canter’s comedic writing is as sharp as ever as he delves into themes such as celebrity, brand awareness and death.
As usual Richard has many friends from whom he seeks advice. Starring Ian McKellen as Head of Gay, and Peter Capaldi and David Tennant as the Two Doctors, along with an excellent supporting cast.
It’s a mockumentary and spoof autobiography rolled into one.

Born in Tasmania, Hannah got to know a lot about art from books. But it was only in her 20s when she visited Europe for the first time, that she saw the art she'd studied 'in the flesh', so to speak.
There in Florence she fell in love with David so she shares her affection for and knowledge of him, with all his imperfections.
Hannah is joined on stage by her very own 'Quotebot' who is inputted with every quote that's ever been written about art.
