The voyage of parody takes us from the Lake District retreat of Romantic poets – a rural idyll rocked by the arrival of the philandering Lord Biro – to gardens of Sizzlinghurst Castle and the “very modern” politics and personal lives of the Gloomsbury set.
The English Civil War gets cavalier treatment in The Sit Crom, where a scullery maid attempts to save a king, while in present-day Norwich two sisters attempt to save their Bed and Breakfast in Alison & Maud.
Shaun discusses the ideas and inspiration behind Sue’s writing with the author herself and talks about turning scripts into performance with regular cast members, Nigel Planer and Miriam Margolyes.

A Saga of Trying (and Failing) to Save the Planet
As a palaeontologist, Professor Alice Roberts knows a lot about mass extinctions.
As part of BBC Radio 4's 'Costing the Earth’ team, she’s also heard a lot about the many potential solutions to our current planetary predicament.
Some are already proven: we know what we have to do to de-carbonise so why are we still rushing towards the environmental apocalypse faster than Elon Musk’s low carbon Hyperloop transporter AKA the ‘barf ride’?
To find out how best we get to zero carbon nirvana, Alice looks back at which great green plans have worked and which remain in the lab. What has really changed in the 40 years since 'climate change' began to be discussed by world leaders, and can the environmental archive tell us what we need to do about it?
Alongside some of the serious and real achievements such as fewer plastic bags, incredible advances in renewable energy and electric cars which work, Alice explores some of the more radical ideas in the archive.
Why, in the future, might we stop having pets or multiple children?
For the answer we can delve back to 'Costing the Earth' in 2010. To keep emissions below 2 degrees we might be eating insects, riding around in airships or holidaying on cruise ships propelled by kite. Or we might have finally figured out how to make carbon capture and storage economical, cracked the fusion power conundrum and found a way to make our waste work for us.
By looking back at campaigns and ideas which have really worked, Alice hopes to find some suggestions for how we should proceed before it's too late.

The Hunter Is the Hunted and the Hunter
Matthew Holness stars as Knut Ångström, a brooding, alcoholic, maverick Swedish detective from the tough streets of Oslo, in a Scandinavian detective yarn adapted from the bestselling Ångström trilogy by Martin English (writing as Bjorgen Swedenssonsson).
Following the death of his wife, Ångström is posted to the Njalsland peninsula where he becomes embroiled in a labyrinthine murder (or possibly not-murder) case which bears an eerie similarity to the Askeladden killings - a case from his distant past.
The investigation takes Ångström and Mina to the remote Celibate Puffin Island (but it's all one word in Swedish) where they find a possible connection between the Askeladden murders and the sinister Bolax Corporation, bringing them closer to finally discovering the identity of the mysterious Ash Lad...

SUN 15:30 Gareth Gwynn's Little Book of Welsh Rock (b055g69f)
All the things you thought you knew about "Welsh music" are wrong.
Forget Tom Jones, Bread of Heaven, male voice choirs, Shirley Bassey: one of the most vibrant and confident place that "Welshness" is articulated in music...is in Welsh-language rock.
There is a whole world of musical activity happening that almost no-one across Offa's Dyke has any idea about. This isn't some niche pursuit - the Welsh-language music scene is young, contemporary and thriving, and has fired off in hugely inventive and original paths that the English language rock scene hasn't; few realise that the internationally-renowned bands Catatonia and Super Furry Animals released songs in their first language of Welsh as well as English. For English music lovers in the know (like the late Radio 1 DJ John Peel) - "roc cymraeg" is fascinating in being completely British yet completely 'other' - in a way few parts of British culture can match. Most crucially, for teenage Welsh-language speakers, it's the medium through which express their cultural and political nationalism - their 'otherness' - most freely.
But Welsh-language rock is a political hot potato, mired in the same cultural and linguistic controversies that dog the idea of "Welshness" across the nation's culture. As the Scottish debated their independence referendum last year, no-one argued that not speaking Gaelic made anyone 'less Scottish'. But in Wales - where around a tenth of the population speak Welsh as a first language - there remains amongst some the idea that you're not truly Welsh unless you speak the national tongue. With the roots of contemporary Welsh rock lying in the protest movements of the 1960s, there remains a highly political - some say Anglophobic - strain to the music scene. If rock music in Welsh is a medium for the Welsh national psyche to truly express itself - who is it leaving out?
Satirist Gareth Gwynn has an identity crisis. He's a proper, paid-up music geek and a proud Welshman. But his iPod's full of English bands...and he doesn't speak Welsh. Can Gareth embrace his inner 'cymro' and immerse himself in a world through the looking-glass? Does he even need to? Gareth embarks on a twisted, often faintly surreal journey through the heart of Welsh-language rock.

MON 14:00 Packing My Library by Alberto Manguel (b09ycsrj)
Episode 1
Alberto Manguel has had consistent 5-star ratings for his books on reading, books and libraries.
With regret, he packs up his library of 35,000 volumes and prepares to move from a vast property in rural France to a small apartment on Manhattan's West Side.
Choosing which books to keep, store, or cast out, Manguel finds himself in deep reverie on the nature of relationships between books and readers, books and collectors, order and disorder, memory and reading.
In this poignant re-evaluation of his life as a reader, he illuminates the highly personal art of reading and affirms the vital role of public libraries. Manguel's musings range widely - from delightful reflections on the idiosyncrasies of book lovers to deeper analyses of historic and catastrophic book events, including the burning of ancient Alexandria's library and contemporary library lootings at the hands of ISIS.
With insight and passion, the author underscores the universal centrality of books and their unique importance to a democratic, civilised, and engaged society.

1. Trouble Ahead
Follow two uniformed police officers, Nisha and Scott, as they patrol the streets of London on foot during a single nightshift.
This is policing at the sharp end. Anything can happen. And, of course, it does.
Contemporary drama serial starring Nisha Nayar and Joel Phillimore.
New recruit Scott can't wait to lock up some bad guys. Fresh out of police training college, he is a little frustrated to be puppy-walked by a female officer. Not that Scott is sexist or a misogynist (he loves his girlfriend and adores his mum), it's just that he craves the company and approval of other guys. He also suffers from White Knight syndrome and has a tendency to see women as damsels in distress. You see, when Scott was twelve, his dad died saving a family in a horrific motorway crash. It's a legend that Scott is desperate to live up to.
The last thing Nisha needs is a White Knight - and she's the total opposite of a damsel in distress. The experienced beat cop has been there, done that and received a commendation for bravery. She's charmed by Scott's boyish enthusiasm, he's a good-hearted soul, and she decides not to burst his balloon - he can find out the hard way that the job is much more about dealing with the sick and the vulnerable than tackling armed robbers.
Nisha joined the police because she thought the job would suit her - she's always had an enquiring mind and she likes dealing with people - but also because, after Stephen Lawrence, she felt that the Metropolitan Police needed people like her. She has faced hostility from friends and family but she's stuck to her guns.
What Nisha doesn't know is that tonight is a night she'll never forget. Because, while Scott and Nisha are - among other things - dealing with a paranoid schizophrenic teen who may have stolen a dog, a group of people are climbing into a van in a London suburb. And they're planning mass murder.

1. Albania to Macedonia
Bettany Hughes follows the ancient Roman road to Istanbul. Tracing its route through Albania, Macedonia and Greece, she explores how the Egnatian Way helped to shape Europe and the Middle East.
Founded in the second century BC, the Via Egnatia was a critical axis of the Roman Empire. It joined Rome to the riches of the east, and became the site of some of the most significant turning points of its history – the place where the forces of the Roman republic lost to the heirs of Julius Caesar, and the route on which St Paul brought Christianity to Europe. Later it was the route the Crusaders took to the holy land, a vital Byzantine communication link and the base from which the Ottoman Turks controlled their vast European holdings.
In the first episode, Bettany journeys from Adriatic shores of Albania to the Macedonian plain where Alexander The Great grew up.
Written and presented by Bettany Hughes.

TUE 06:30 The Mind of Mr JG Reeder (b0082gyz)
1. The Poetical Policeman
Mr JG Reeder has the mind of a criminal, using it to uncover the peculiar circumstances surrounding a bank robbery, the death of the night-watchman and the part in the plot played by his beautiful daughter.
This first of four stories provides useful insight into the past of Mr JG Reeder, whose novel methods bring the criminals of 1920s London to justice.
Read by David Horovitch.
Edgar Wallace is best known for his popular detective and suspense stories which earned him the title, "King of the Modern Thriller."
Although created at roughly the same time, Mr JG Reeder is the diametric opposite of Sam Spade, Philip Marlow and Mike Hammer. He is a shabbily dressed, diffident civil servant who prefers a cup of tea and a slice of seed cake to a shot of something stronger.
Reeder is a uniquely English detective. An apparent fuddy-duddy working in some obscure capacity in the Public Prosecutor's office, he actually has a razor-sharp intellect and is a super-sleuth. He solves his mysteries because he fully understands the "criminal mind".
Abridged in four parts by Neville Teller.
Producer: Gemma Jenkins

Episode 1: Close Contact Paint-based Combat Maneuvers
Bill Bailey stars as Guy Starling, a middle aged man who, after 45 years, and for reasons quite unknown to him, is suddenly revisited by his imaginary childhood friend, Hennikay.
After closing the biggest deal in the history of Maidstone, Guy’s boss decides to reward him with an adventure-based, corporate team-building day out, which has him running around the woods shooting paint pellets at middle managers.
Not only does Guy have to deal with his scheming, back-stabbing co-workers, desperate to ruin his career and steal his glory, he also has to cope with Hennikay, his imaginary childhood friend who has turned back up in his life and is stubbornly refusing to leave, running riot in the woods with a paint gun.
But as the paint splatters and the deals sour, Guy soon discovers that in the cut-throat world of grown-up business, the only person who he can trust is the 11-year-old boy he invented back in 1976.
Acclaimed comedian (and Strictly Come Dancing champion) Bill Bailey leads a cast which includes Dave Lamb and Elizabeth Carling in this warm, funny look at childhood, adulthood and some of the follies of modern life - where a man with a confused child in his head might just be the sanest person in the room.

Desert Island Myths: Three Centuries of Robinson Crusoe
Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe was first published on 25 April 1719. By the end of the 19th century it had become the most reissued, adapted and translated novel in the world.
Over the years, this island adventure story has been interpreted in a huge variety of ways: by critics as the first ever novel in English; by political theorists as an allegory of colonialism; by economists as a story of primitive accumulation; by anthropologists as a classic statement of nature and civilisation; and by educationalists as a story of learning by doing.
The book has also inspired countless creative works, from Gulliver’s Travels, Swiss Family Robinson and Treasure Island to Lost In Space, Cast Away and The Martian. Not forgetting several reality TV shows and the ever popular Desert Island Discs.
Over 300 years on from Robinson Crusoe's publication, cultural historian Christopher Frayling sets sail through the BBC archive to explore the creation and legacy of this controversial text.

Episode 2

2. From Thessaloniki into Thrace
Bettany Hughes follows the ancient road from Rome to Istanbul.
In the second episode, Bettany journeys from Thessaloniki into Thrace, tracking the movement of ideas along the road and discovering the long history of refugees on the route from ancient times to the present day.

Streets of London by Ralph McTell
Ralph McTell and others discuss a song that was written for a heroin addict, became an anthem against homelessness, and transcended the folk genre to become an enduring classic.
Ralph McTell says he’s thought constantly about the “blip in my graph” that is Streets of London. People say to him “50 years. One hit. You think you’d have given up by now”. But, Ralph says, that’s not why he writes songs. And, of course, he’s written many. Many that he considers far better than Streets of London. But this remains his best known, best loved, and most played track. It was first recorded 50 years ago, in 1969, for his album Spiral Staircase although it wasn’t released as a single until 1974.
Taking part in Soul Music, alongside Ralph, with their stories and memories connected to Streets of London, are:
Jerry Playle, a music producer. His first ever public performance as a teenage guitarist was of Streets of London. The guitar part went well, but when he opened his mouth to sing, he realised - to his horror - that he couldn't...
Gwen Ever, a DJ. He became homeless in the 1980s. It’s the unlikely punk version of Streets of London by the Anti Nowhere League that reminds him of this time.
Maria Bentley-Dingwall, the daughter of Iris Bentley. Iris was the sister of Derek Bentley who was hanged for a murder he did not commit. Iris spent her life campaigning for his conviction to be quashed. Ralph McTell grew up knowing this story, became a friend of the family, wrote a song about the case, and sang Streets of London at Iris Bentley’s funeral.

3. The Road through Turkey to Istanbul
Bettany Hughes follows the ancient road from Rome to Istanbul.
In the third episode, Bettany completes the final section of the road through Turkey to Istanbul, tracking the movement of stories along the road and discovering the way the Ottomans adapted it to their new empire.
Written and presented by Bettany Hughes.

Episode 4

FRI 11:00 The Reunion (b01rqgz3)
Doctor Who
Sue MacGregor reunites five people who played key roles in the early years of a TV landmark, Doctor Who.
Fifty years on, some of those who crammed nervously into the BBC's Lime Grove Studios in 1963 recount the triumphs and disasters that ushered in the longest running sci-fi series in the world.
When Canadian TV executive Sydney Newman was drafted into revitalise the BBC Drama department in the early 1960's. His idea for an ageing time-traveller who would illuminate both human history and Alien civilisations struggled to be successfully realised.
After a number of other directors refused to work on the project, a 24-year-old Waris Hussein took the job. The only Indian-born director within the BBC at that time, he felt the stern gaze of the 'old order' upon his work.
The first serial was being recorded on the day US President Kennedy was assassinated and the first episode was transmitted the next day, despite concerns that the show might be postponed.
Doctor Who was played by the British actor William Hartnell. His sharp, sometimes grumpy demeanour came out of his increasing difficulty in learning the scripts, but the audience immediately took him to their hearts and the series had nearly six million viewers by Christmas.
Joining Sue MacGregor is:
* Waris Hussein, who directed the first episode
* Carole Ann Ford - the Doctor's granddaughter and companion Susan
* William Russell - the Doctor's right hand man Ian Chesterton
* Jeremy Young - the Doctor's first enemy - Caveman Kal
* TV presenter Peter Purves who, as companion Steven Taylor, played opposite William Hartnell in over 40 episodes.

FRI 11:45 David Attenborough's Life Stories (b0100j9q)
Series 2
Hummers
Hummingbirds are given spectacular names motivated by their striking colours, patterns and shimmering metallic iridescence; their names are beautiful as are the birds.
David Attenborough has filmed them on several occasions and is fascinated by their agility and flying skills to drink nectar from flowers inaccessible to any other animal. And propelled by this rocket fuel of nature they are capable of flying great distances and living life in the fast lane.
Enchanting in this story is how moved David Attenborough is when recalling a story of their conservation; a rare piece of good news he comments.
Written and presented by Sir David Attenborough.

FRI 14:00 Packing My Library by Alberto Manguel (b09zmdjl)
Episode 5

FRI 14:30 The Etymology of Entomology (b01r4xw5)
Zoologist Dr George McGavin delves into the strange and often bizarre names given to the planet's insects.
There are an estimated 10 million living insect species, with new specimens being discovered almost daily. Entomologists are turning to ever more imaginative names, referencing everything from literary figures, celebrities and politicians to playground puns.
George takes us into the complex and intriguing world of the taxonomist. From the 18th century father of modern taxonomy Carl Linnaeus to the present day, he explains why naming the things that surround us is the foundation of all science.
There are flies named Pieza kake and S. beyonceae (after the singer); beetles with political connections - A. hitleri, A. bushi, A. cheneyi and A. rumsfeldi; and some entomologists have even named discoveries after romantic conquests. Unsurprisingly, names can prove controversial but, once set, are difficult to change.
George pieces together his story at Linnaeus' original collection at The Linnean Society, and at the capital's Natural History Museum and London Zoo. He also reveals some insects named after him at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History.
Produced by Andrea Rangecroft.
