5. Eyewitness Reports
The BBC is a British institution unlike any other, and its story during the Second World War is also the story of Britain's people.

In this final episode, the BBC's War Reporting Unit comes into being, and correspondent Guy Byam is parachuted behind enemy lines.
These were the years when Auntie (the BBC's enduring nickname) earned a reputation for bossiness. It was also a period of remarkable voices - Churchill's fighting speeches, de Gaulle's broadcasts from exile, George Orwell, Ed Murrow, Richard Dimbleby and Vera Lynn.
During these extraordinary times, eyewitness testimonies gave a voice to everyone, securing the BBC's reputation as a reliable purveyor of the truth.

SAT 02:30 The Last Post (b06nq1f6)
How did a simple British Army bugle call from the 18th century become a sacred anthem of death and remembrance?
And how did it spread to the rest of the world, played at the funerals of Gandhi and Nelson Mandela?
The Last Post started as just one of a couple of dozen bugle calls played every day in a British Amy barracks. Then, in the 1850s, it found a new role, played at soldiers’ funerals and from there it was extended to be used at memorial services for those who had died in conflict.
Gradually, it moved beyond the military, played at the funerals of many who had never been in the armed forces, such as Wallace Hartley, bandmaster of the Titanic.
But it was in the midst of the First World War that The Last Post had its greatest resonance, becoming the obvious soundtrack to remembrance.
Then, as the British Empire dissolved, it was invariably The Last Post that was sounded as the Union flag was lowered for the final time in former colonies across the world.
Somewhat bizarrely, it was played to mark the passing of Gandhi and Nelson Mandela; it is still sounded on both sides of the disputed border between India and Pakistan; it was the accompaniment to funerals for both the IRA and the UDA. And it spread beyond the British Empire, to countries like Portugal and Belgium and to their former colonies.
Now, The Last Post is played in its original incarnation only at the Tower of London, where it is still sounded nightly. But in its role as the music of loss, it has become almost a sacred anthem in an increasingly secular society.
Alwyn Turner tells the untold story of one of the most famous pieces of music in the world.
Producer: Ben Crighton
Editor: Andrew Smith

True stories told live in the USA: Jay Allison introduces tales of learning life’s lessons from one’s parents.
The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.
The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.
Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.

SUN 15:30 Fu Manchu In Edinburgh (b00rt91z)
"Yellow Peril," "Celestial One" and "Devil Doctor": Sax Rohmer's evil genius, Dr Fu Manchu, traded under many aliases, but where was his doctorate from?
"I am a doctor of philosophy from Edinburgh, a doctor of law from Christ College, a doctor of medicine from Harvard. My friends, out of courtesy, call me 'Doctor'." - The Mask of Fu Manchu (1932)
Miles Jupp (also an Edinburgh University alumnus) investigates the hidden Edinburgh years of the criminal mastermind who fought a war against Western imperialism after learning his trade in one of the West's most esteemed Universities.
From the novels we can work out Fu Manchu must have studied in Edinburgh in the early 1870s.
So what do historical records teach us about his time there?
Back then, Conan Doyle was registered at the University Medical School, studying at the feet of Joseph Bell, the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes. Thomas De Quincey, the English Opium Eater, had died in the city a few years before but the network by which he sourced his laudanum was still intact, brought by Chinese Coolies from the Port of Leith to the drawing-rooms of the New Town.
There were Chinese students registered on the matriculation rolls of the University, some of them refugees from the Boxer rebellion, and the seamen's missions and city police reports make it clear that there was a thriving Chinese criminal network in Scotland's capital.
Could Fu Manchu have learned his criminal trade as an undergraduate at the city's university? Could his later dominance of Limehouse in London have been based on the contacts he made with Chinese gangs in Edinburgh?
What factual evidence exists to flesh out the experience of the fictional enemy of the West?
Producer: David Stenhouse

But never one to stand still, Alan has an idea for a series of stories about social issues, reporting from the other side of the world. A 30,000-mile world trip, crossing five continents filming more than forty different reports.
But he’s proposing to do something never done before. It will be just himself and a two-man crew and Alan will direct, write, and front the pieces. All the rushes flown back to London for film editor Jack Gold to shape into stories for the nightly show.

Walking the Wild Mind
Singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega explores Lou Reed's complexities with New Yorkers who knew him well.
Suzanne first saw Lou Reed perform when she was a student in New York. In that first concert she saw him intimidate and upset the audience in the first half of the show but, after the interval, he was another performer entirely. This was Lou bestowing all his charisma and talent to fans.
She explores the two sides of Lou Reed in a programme celebrating the imminent unveiling of his archive. Lou's widow, artist and musician Laurie Anderson, has donated it to the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.
Suzanne Vega lived a couple of blocks away from Lou and Laurie and often visited them at their country home. She wanted to get him know him better, but it was obvious that he needed to protect himself. Now, Suzanne talks to other New Yorkers who knew and worked with him.
Few got to see all sides of Lou Reed. Poet Anne Waldman talks about how seriously he took his poetry and songwriting. His second wife Sylvia Reed also describes his love of literature. Biographer Anthony De Curtis talks about the R and B music Lou loved all his life. Music entrepreneur Michael Dorf, shared with Lou his love of Jewish celebrations. Garland Jeffreys, a musician who knew Lou from university days to his death in 2013, describes their love of doo-wop on Brooklyn street corners. He also witnessed Lou's rage at his father.
Suzanne asks her interviewees to bring objects that remind them of Lou or talk about an item in the archive. And she has an exclusive sneak peek at some of the archival gems - the jewel, an exclusive for the BBC, is the opening of an iconic song from a 1965 demo.
Presenter: Suzanne Vega

TUE 14:30 The Lost Songs of Hollywood (b06nrqvk)
The classic film soundtracks of the Golden Age of Hollywood feature some of the most quintessentially American music you’re likely to hear.
But the music for King Kong, Casablanca, High Noon and many other movies was actually written by Europeans – exiled classical composers, many of them Jewish, arriving in the USA in the 1920s and 30s.
Opera singer Julia Kogan was forced to leave the Soviet Union with her parents. Fascinated by the impact of exile on other artists, she goes in search of the songs many of these composers wrote away from the Hollywood spotlight, which until recently remained unpublished, hidden away in family archives.
What can these songs tell us about the emotional impact on these musicians, of being uprooted from their homelands and starting anew in a culturally alien world?
Kogan visits Los Angeles, to unearth and perform songs by multiple Oscar-winning composer Dimitri Tiomkin and by Erich Zeisl, a little-known composer whose fortunes took a rather different turn after leaving Europe. And she meets the last surviving exiled composer in Hollywood, Walter Arlen. At his 95th birthday celebrations, Kogan asks how a lifetime away from his native Austria is reflected in the songs that are only now seeing the light of day for the first time.
We hear Julia performing Tiomkin's 'Sweet Surrender' (with Alan Steinberger at the piano), Eric Zeisl's 'Prayer', and 'Es geht wohl anders' and 'Wiegenlied' by Walter Arlen (all with pianist Edan Gillen).

Oscar has dropped in to the meeting on the way to see his son.
Oscar’s recently lost his wife and wants to share her story. But Oscar’s tale is far from what any of the group expected.
Continuing the award-nominated comedy drama set in Alcoholics Anonymous, written by Pete Jackson and inspired by his own road to recovery.
It follows the lives of five very different recovering alcoholics. Taking place entirely at their weekly meetings, we hear them moan, argue, laugh, fall apart, fall in love and - most importantly - tell their stories.

Writer Pete Jackson is a recovering alcoholic and has spent time in Alcoholics Anonymous. It was there he found, as most people do, support from the unlikeliest group of disparate souls, all banded together due to one common bond. As well as offering the support he needed throughout a difficult time, AA also offered a weekly, sometimes daily, dose of hilarity, upset, heartbreak and friendship.
Love in Recovery doesn’t seek to represent an AA meeting exactly as it might happen in real life, but to capture the funny stories, the sad stories, the stories of small victories and of huge milestones, stories of loss, stories of hope, and most importantly, the many highs and lows in the journey of recovery.

WED 11:00 Billy Bragg's Changing Times (m000l929)
1. So Much To Protest About
These are fractious times. But there have been fractious times before. And of all the ways of looking at history, the instinctive reactions of artists, specifically musicians, to changing times, is one of the most fascinating.
From Hamish Henderson to Tom Robinson, the Sex Pistols to U2, and more recently Radiohead and Stormzy, protest music has come a long way.
In the first of three programme, Billy Bragg takes time to savour and share the stories of great moments where musicians were inspired by unfolding events to protest, to perform and to preach of an alternative way.
Along the way there's contributions from authors, artists and academics who have seen technology transform the way in which people create and listen to protest songs. And there will be a chance to hear from those producing protest music in the era of Brexit, Trump and fake news.

‘Songlines: Freedom Come All Ye’ [07/07/2009 BBC Radio Scotland]

1. Vaudeville
Geoffrey Wheeler explores the history of American vaudeville.
Like Music Hall in Britain, vaudeville was a product of its time; increasing urbanisation, and a desire to present entertainment which would appeal to the whole family, led to the development of vast vaudeville circuits, spanning thousands of miles of barely settled American territory, on which tens of thousands of performers travelled from town to town earning their living.
Among those who learned their trade in vaudeville were future international stars such as Fred and Adele Astaire, Bob Hope, Jack Benny and jazz singer Ma Rainey.

THU 14:30 Tibet Remembered (b03bdbq2)
BBC Radio producer Tom Alban's godfather Charles Searle spent three months as a medical officer in the Tibetan hill fort town of Gyantse in 1940.
His memories of marching across the high mountain passes into this extraordinary country were familiar to close family but it was only when the Dalai Lama spoke of the importance of what appeared to be 'colonial' memories that they took on a new life.
Tom sets out to gather the memories of the few remaining British people who visited Tibet before the arrival of the Chinese in 1950, including Dick Gould, son of Sir Basil Gould who served in Tibet and Col Alan Jenkins who travelled there in 1947.
While the recollections of the Himalayan vistas and rugged high-altitude plains of the so-called 'roof of the world' are dramatic, it's the details about the food, the basic transport systems, the juxtaposition of poverty and ceremony and the friendships made with Tibetans themselves which makes this so much more than the Hollywood version of the mystic land featured in films like 'Seven years in Tibet'.

Goodness Gracious Me
Sue MacGregor brings together the creators of the ground-breaking British Asian sketch show, Goodness Gracious Me.
The comedy show debuted on BBC Radio 4 in the summer of 1996. It was the first venture conceived, written and performed by British Asians. The title ‘Goodness Gracious Me' was inspired by the Peter Sellers song from the film The Millionairess, in which he plays an Indian doctor.
The series poked fun at British and Indian stereotypes and at the tensions between Asian culture and modern British life. One of the most iconic sketches – ‘Going for an English' – featured a group of Asians going out for an English meal and mispronouncing everything on the menu. This reversing of experiences was a hallmark of the show.
There was a growing confidence amongst a new generation of British Asians in the 1990s. Asian culture was at the forefront of the youth scene and there was a feeling amongst many in broadcasting that it was time the Asian community had their own TV series. At the BBC, multi-cultural programming was becoming integral to the schedule and yet doubts remained about whether mainstream audiences would tap into something which focussed on one ethnicity.
However, after an award-winning run on the radio, Goodness Gracious Me moved to BBC 2 where it continued to attract huge audiences for three more series, giving birth to a new genre - "Asian Comedy".
Sue is joined around the table by: Meera Syal and Sanjeev Bhaskar, who wrote and starred in the series; Anil Gupta, the producer who first pitched the idea to the BBC; Jon Plowman, then the BBC's head of comedy and entertainment and Richard Pinto the comedy writer who helped develop the idea.

Series 2
Wallace
It was the great travel books written in the 19th century by Alfred Russell Wallace that inspired Sir David Attenborough himself to achieve great things in the realm of natural history.
But Attenborough tells us that Wallace was more than just a great travel writer.
His power of meticulous observation and recording as he explored many parts of the world were in the highest league imaginable, even for Victorian standards - and his power of analysis very much akin with Darwin, his great contemporary.
Wallace independently came up with a theory of evolution that was in parallel to Darwin's thinking - two field naturalists breaking huge conventions of the time and coming up with the single most important theory in Biology. How did they resolve the conflict between themselves?

FRI 14:30 Nightingales of India (b0210pl8)
This is the remarkable story of two iconic sisters revered by Bollywood fans the world over. Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle are two of the finest and most prolific female vocalists in the business. They are playback singers extraordinaire - providing the singing voices of generations of film actresses.
Yasmin Alibhai-Brown tells the story of the sisters from a humble background parallels the story of Bollywood and of India itself.
Known as the 'nightingales of India', they have forged careers spanning more than six decades. One or the other of them is rarely out of the record books as the most recorded artist in the world.
The sisters were born into a theatrical family. Lata, the older of the two, who is interviewed in the programme was left, at the age of thirteen, to support the whole family. After much hardship she got her big break and, just as the Hindi film industry was taking off at the end of the thirties, a star was born. Now in her 80s, despite her fame and fortune, she leads a quiet, simple life and remains unmarried. Her younger sister Asha, now in her eighties too, was far from shy and retiring. Teenage elopement, affairs and divorce make her the dangerous half of the duo. She too made it to the top.
Everyone who is anyone in Bollywood has worked with or is familiar with the sisters' work. And the programme includes a rare interview with Lata Mangeshkar herself.
Please note: at one point, the presenter refers to Lata and Asha's audience as being in "south east asia". This should be an audience in "south asia".
