SAT 02:30 The Business of Film with Mark Kermode (b0536932)
Development Hell
Film critic Mark Kermode reveals the economic realities behind the film industry.
In the first part of this two-part series, Mark finds out about the journey from script to screen - a path littered with obstacles.
Many films languish in so-called "Development Hell", where producers turn in scripts, listen to conflicting opinions and resubmit their storylines hoping for a magical green light.
Some will make it, such as Jonathan Glazer's Under the Skin which took 13 years to get to the screen. Others, like Lynda Obst's film about an Ebola outbreak in the late 1980s, may finally see the light of day, in some form, 20 years on.
Away from the art and artifice lie the financial barriers to getting a film made. For some, the movie industry is little more than the 'branded carnival business'. The Hollywood studio system seeks success, replication, and reliability. Has an industry that was built by risk takers now become risk averse? Independent movie makers struggle to raise the finance for their films while the big studios produce movies that they know will turn a profit.
Mark hears from the BFI, Channel 4 and BBC Films on the support they are offering.
Experts within film finance describe their model, but Lock Stock and Kick Ass producer Matthew Vaughn, who has turned a profit on every film he has made, believes there is no such thing as a British film industry and movies should not be subsidised with tax breaks, adding that the industry is just a 'glamorised service provider'.

Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.
The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.
Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.
The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.
First broadcast in the USA in 2019.

The ABC of the BBC
Poet Daljit Nagra chooses The ABC of the BBC to mark 100 years.
The BBC was formed on 18th October 1922 to inform, educate and entertain. Daily broadcasting began on November 14th, 1922.
Published in 1928, Eleanor Farjeon's The ABC of the BBC is a collection of alphabet poems - giving a lively impression of the corporation in its early days.
This inspired Wendy Cope to offer her own specially commissioned ABC of the BBC, depicting the broadcaster in a contemporary light.
Interspersed readings from both collections offer some humorous insights into how things have changed.

SUN 13:00 Factfulness by Hans Rosling (Omnibus) (b09yd9yc)
Professor Hans Rosling was ‘the man in whose hands data sings’.
Dubbed ‘a true inspiration’ by Bill Gates, the statistician became a viral celebrity thanks to his popular TED talks which broke down the statistics behind global health and economics.
Before his death in 2017, Rosling spent years asking global audiences simple questions about basic trends.
How widespread is extreme poverty?
What is life expectancy today?
How many children in the world have been vaccinated?
He quizzed everyone from medics to lecturers, bankers, political decision makers – even Nobel Laureates. And the results were always the same.
“Everyone seems to get the world not only devastatingly wrong, but systematically wrong. By which I mean, that these test results are worse than random. They are worse than the results I would get if the people answering my questions had no knowledge at all.”
Rosling identifies key instincts - from misplaced fear through a belief in destiny to the love of a simple solution - which warp our view of the world and blind us to the miracle of human progress.

SUN 15:30 I Dressed Ziggy Stardust (b01r91qk)
For more than four decades, David Bowie entranced his followers.
Samira Ahmed looks at his particular appeal for British Asian women.
Across the generations, they were inspired by the skinny South Londoner, who challenged gender barriers and who played with alien identity and other-worldliness.
Beneath the make up and exotic costumes, he was also the intelligent, politely spoken suburban young man who you could potentially introduce to your mother.
As Samira explores Bowie’s impact on British Asian teenagers, she talks to Shami Chakrabarti - the director of Liberty - about Bowie’s changing identities, sociologist Rupa Huq tackles his suburban psychoses, and Shyama Perera takes Samira on a journey to explain how her teenage obsession with Bowie even extended to sending costume designs to her hero, enabling her to claim that “I Dressed Ziggy Stardust”.

MON 14:00 The Line Becomes a River by Francisco Cantú (b09sn13z)
Episode 1
Former US Border Patrol Agent, Francisco Cantú worked on a remote spot on the US/ Mexican border from 2008-2012.
He recounts how he tracked down an unending stream of men, women and children who risk all for a better life in the US away from the violent crime that underpins their lives in Mexico.
Francisco tells the personal stories of the weary and the spent who he turns backs, and of the many who don't survive the gruelling journey through the vast desert during summer's searingly hot days and freezing nights.
Born to the daughter of a Mexican immigrant, the border is in his blood and his decision to become a law enforcer came after four years of learning about it through policy and history while studying international relations, and the realisation that theory isn't enough. He needs to be on the ground to understand the border in all its beauty, ugliness and danger.
After four years the personal toll is more than he can bear and he leaves the Patrol but when an immigrant friend does not return from a trip to Mexico to visit his dying mother he is returned to a world that he discovers is impossible to leave behind.
His account is interwoven with reflections on the history, culture, nature and psychology of the border, and is more broadly about life on either side of an arbitrary line, wherever it is.
Francisco Cantú's is a Fulbright fellow, and in 2017 he was a Whiting Award winner.

Episode 2
Francisco Cantu, a former Border Patrol Agent recounts how the US/Mexican border was created, and finds beauty in the landscape as well as despair. Joseph Balderrama reads
Francisco Cantu's memoir about working for the US Border Patrol also tells the personal stories of those who risk all for a better life in the US.
Born to the daughter of a Mexican immigrant, the border is in his blood. His decision to become a law enforcer came after four years of learning about it through policy and history while studying international relations, and the realisation that theory isn't enough. He needs to be on the ground to understand the border in all its beauty, ugliness and danger. After four years the personal toll leads him to leave the Patrol but when an immigrant friend does not return from a trip to Mexico Cantu is returned to a world which he discovers is impossible to leave behind.
His evocative account is interwoven with reflections on the history, culture, nature and psychology of the border, and is more broadly about life on either side of a boundary, wherever it is.

TUE 14:30 The Jacqueline Effect (b066zp9x)
A small girl of 4 living in Croydon heard a cello playing on the radio. ‘I want to make that noise', she said to her mother.
Her name was Jacqueline Du Pré. Aged 5 she was studying at the London Cello School; at 16 she made her sensational Wigmore Hall debut. 12 years later, she gave her final performance, a victim of multiple sclerosis.
Music journalist Helen Wallace, who herself took up the cello after experiencing Du Pré on film, asks if she still has the potential to inspire, and whether her unique reputation was deserved.
Du Pré died in 1987. During that intense decade of her career, thousands heard, and saw Du Pré perform, and were inspired to take up the instrument themselves.
Unlikely cellists joined school orchestras and for decades to come, cello posts in orchestras around the world would be over-subscribed, competition driving the technical level higher and higher. Superb cello virtuosi emerged from conservatoires all over the world in ever greater numbers – a phenomenon known as 'The Jacqueline Effect'.
Her tragic story, the subject of books, plays and a feature film, continues to intrigue: her super-human musical gifts, international success, turbulent personal life and marriage to Daniel Barenboim, and her affliction with MS at an early age.
Christopher Nupen’s 1967 ‘Omnibus’ documentary brought her a vast new audience, and he reflects on his part in creating the phenomenon, as do professional cellists who knew her - William Bruce and Moray Welsh - plus Alisa Weilerstein - superstar cellist of the new generation who fell in love with a cellist she never knew.
So, has the Jacqueline Effect survived?

Shine On You Crazy Diamond
Shine On You Crazy Diamond discussed by voices including David Gilmour of Pink Floyd.
Understood to have been written about Syd Barrett, their former band member, it’s both a tribute, and a call for him to ‘shine on’ despite suffering serious mental health issues.
In this edition of Soul Music, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd recalls the legendary day that Syd Barrett unexpectedly appeared in the studio where they were recording Wish You Were Here, the album bookended by Shine On. Nobody recognised Syd at first; once handsome and slender, he'd gained weight and shaved his head and eyebrows.
Another contributor to the programme, Anna Gascoigne, talks about the pain of losing her son, Jay. He was a gentle boy, a talented musician, who eventually succumbed to the multiple mental health problems he had battled for years. Shine On You Crazy Diamond, for Anna, speaks directly to her of Jay; he loved Pink Floyd and Shine On was played at his memorial service. Anna, herself, was driven to the brink of suicide by her son’s death. It was the support of her family – including her brother, Paul Gascoigne - that helped her to carry on.
Ed Steelefox, a DJ based in Worcester, describes a New Year’s Eve house-party of a few years ago: as the guests gradually fell asleep he chose to slip out the door leaving a non-stop playlist of different, live, versions of Shine On You Crazy Diamond to penetrate their dreams.
And Professor Allan Moore, a regular Soul Music contributor, takes to the grand piano to play and talk about what it is in the track that is so directly reminiscent of Syd Barrett.

Continuing the award-nominated comedy drama set in Alcoholics Anonymous, written by Pete Jackson and inspired by his own road to recovery.
It follows the lives of five very different recovering alcoholics. Taking place entirely at their weekly meetings, we hear them moan, argue, laugh, fall apart, fall in love and - most importantly - tell their stories.

Writer Pete Jackson is a recovering alcoholic and has spent time in Alcoholics Anonymous. It was there he found, as most people do, support from the unlikeliest group of disparate souls, all banded together due to one common bond. As well as offering the support he needed throughout a difficult time, AA also offered a weekly, sometimes daily, dose of hilarity, upset, heartbreak and friendship.
Love in Recovery doesn’t seek to represent an AA meeting exactly as it might happen in real life, but to capture the funny stories, the sad stories, the stories of small victories and of huge milestones, stories of loss, stories of hope, and most importantly, the many highs and lows in the journey of recovery.

WED 10:00 Frank Cottrell-Boyce - The Door in the Pillow (m0002g48)
Inspired by events in his own life, award-winning screenwriter and novelist Frank Cottrell-Boyce has created a deeply tender drama, full of heart, hope and humour which weaves the powerful impact of dementia into a haunting ghost story. Anne Mitchell stars as Annie, a woman whose fractured sense of the world is held together by stories. Daughter Terri starts to question where they are coming from – one story in particular seems wildly disconnected from anything Terri knows of her mother's past. It doesn’t crack under examination, and seems to have a concrete solidity that reality no longer does....
Frank Cottrell-Boyce is perhaps best known as the script writer for the London Olympics Opening Ceremony. He won the Carnegie medal for his novel MILLIONS, which he also adapted for the screen directed by Danny Boyle. He scripted the Oscar-nominated HILARY AND JACKIE, and collaborated with Michael Winterbottom on films including 24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE. His novel SPUTNIK’S GUIDE TO LIFE ON EARTH is currently being adapted as an animated film for Dreamworks.

WED 11:00 The Rudest Man in Britain (m001dfn3)
Episode 1
The Rudest Man in Britain excavates the archives from the perspective of Gilbert Harding - a well-loved radio personality who went on to achieve wider TV exposure as star of long-running panel shows such as 'What's My Line?' once watched by millions.
Clever, amusing and often outrageous, Harding was a familiar voice of wireless who became a pioneer of popular TV. But behind the public persona, there was a troubled and conflicted character.
To create a profile of Gilbert Harding's life and sample his broadcasting work Simon Fanshawe draws on Stephen Wyatt's play Dr Brighton and Mr Harding, in which Harding (played by Roger Allam) wrestles with his inner demons and fantasies, knowing also that he is in increasingly poor health (hence his reason for moving to the coast to embrace 'Dr Brighton').
Simon samples excerpts from:
* Round Britain Quiz,
* What's My Line?
* The Brains Trust
* A complete edition of Twenty Questions – which, as a format, still stands up well.
He also revisits Harding's seminal 1960 BBC Face to Face TV interview with John Freeman, where he broke down on camera when the questioner touched a nerve.
Simon Fanshawe explores the development of many now familiar formats on Radio and TV - and assembles a fascinating and rounded portrait of this tortured but much loved polymath.

THU 14:00 The Line Becomes a River by Francisco Cantú (b09sqhl0)
Episode 4
Francisco Cantu's experiences of policing the US/Mexican border become personal when an immigrant friend attempts to make the perilous crossing. Joseph Balderrama reads.

Mark Tully joins the pilgrims at the world's largest religious festival. Hindu traditions meet modern India at the confluence of the sacred rivers Ganges and Yamuna where millions of believers come to bathe.
At the Kumbh Mela he finds that, as the country develops into a consumer society and world power, rituals and religious practices are flourishing. He asks whether these will survive the march of modernity and the consumerism which comes with today's economic growth. Could spiritual India provide lessons for an increasingly secular world?
This is the third time Mark Tully has attended the Maha Kumbh Mela, which happens every twelve years. In this programme he continues to document how the old and the new intertwine in India, past, present and future.

Episode 5
The former Border Patrol agent Francisco Cantu gains a new understanding of the US/ Mexican border.

FRI 14:30 The Business of Film with Mark Kermode (b053zsn5)
Getting to the Screen
In 2014, close to 700 movies opened in the UK. Blockbusters, franchises, documentaries, debuts, experiments, low-budget indies and beyond. It's never been easier to make a film and it's said there is an audience for everything. But what is the likely size of that audience? In the second part of this series, film critic Mark Kermode talks to the film financiers and the distributors.
According to the head of Film Four, David Kosse, the film industry is a "break-even business" - the trick is to identify a winner and ensure it's not just a one off. The independent film world - most of the British film industry - spreads the risk of making a film across independent distributors, equity financiers and other tax benefits. We hear from the BFI, Film Four and BBC Films on what films they are looking to finance.
Since the early days of film, rich outsiders have financed the industry. Now, producers who don't fit the studio model are looking to a multitude of ways to finance their film - from crowdfunding to rich kids with cheque books. Director Shane Carruth tells how he distributed his film Upstream Color himself, road-showing cinema screenings and bringing the film out on Blu-ray. And with much talk of Video on Demand, what role will Netflix and Amazon play in the future of film?
Marketing is crucial to the life and death of a movie but it remains the one hard cost in moviemaking. The trailer can be of vital importance and we hear what we respond to and what scenes should be left out.
