SAT 02:30 Mockery with Monocles: The Western Brothers Revealed (b01nxwmw)
Geoffrey Palmer celebrates the songs of Kenneth and George Western and reveals their place in British comedy.
The Western Brothers became famous from the late 1920s onwards for their variety act satirising the establishment of the time. They perfected the aloof exaggerations of two derisive upper-crust society members and became an instant success in the entertainment world. They toured the variety circuit through the 1930s and 40s with their own aeroplane and always stayed in the very best hotels.
What made their witty songs at the piano so distinct was their topicality. Many of them were list songs, in which the verses could be altered to fit the stories and personalities of the day. Fellow performers, politicians and especially the stuffiness of the BBC were their targets then, after war broke out, they laid into the enemy with rather more finesse than most.
They became as famous for their appearance with monocles and old school ties as for their voices. Their photos frequently appeared in newspaper advertisements endorsing a variety of products. Their 'targets' mostly took the gentle barbs in good grace, but there were several occasions when their jokes attracted complaint. These included upsetting the Greek embassy, suggesting nepotism at the heart of government, which necessitated an immediate written apology.
Contributors include Barry Humphries, Kit Hesketh-Harvey, Mitch Benn, Stan Stennett and the daughters of Kenneth and George Western.
Producer: Stephen Garner

The second guest is journalist Martin Popplewell, who was inspired as a teenager to try desert island life by Brooke Shields in the film ‘The Blue Lagoon’.

Canopy
If you walk into a rainforest you are immediately met by quite literally a forest of trees.
All the tree trunks look like cathedral pillars, smooth and wet from the rain. Not a single branch emerges from the trunk for tens of metres - and when they do you see a breath-taking interlocking jungle of branches and leaves, ferns and flowers and all number of creatures great and small. The canopy is a bonanza of tropical forest life, in the bright light and gentle breeze - a far cry from the dark and humid underworld of the forest floor.
Not surprising then that Sir David Attenborough knew this would be a perfect place to film wildlife.
Producer: Julian Hector

SUN 11:00 Radiolab (m001cmz6)
Series 10
The Helen Keller Exorcism
Radiolab explores the real story of Deafblind American author and rights activist, Helen Keller. With Jad Abumrad, Lulu Miller and Elsa Sjunneson.
Fantasy writer Elsa Sjunneson has been haunted by Helen Keller for nearly her entire life. Like Helen, Elsa is Deafblind, and growing up she was constantly compared to her. But for a million different reasons she hated that, because she felt different from her in a million different ways. Then, a year ago, an online conspiracy theory claiming Helen was a fraud exploded on TikTok, and suddenly Elsa found herself drawing her sword and jumping to Helen’s defense, setting off a chain of events that would bring her closer to the disability icon than she ever dreamt. For over a year, Elsa, Lulu and the Radiolab team dug through primary sources, talked to experts, even visited Helen’s birthplace Ivy Green, and discovered the real story of Helen Keller is far more complicated, mysterious and confounding than the simple myth of a young Deafblind girl rescued by her teacher Annie Sullivan. It’s a story of ghosts, surprises, a few tears, a bit of romance, some hard conversations, and a possibly psychic dog.

Edward Thomas - The Journey To War
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and chooses Edward Thomas - The Journey to War. The London Welsh poet was killed during the Battle of Arras, just over 100 years ago. He was 39 years old.
Gwyneth Lewis, Wales' first National Poet, has admired his work greatly over many years. ‘Edward Thomas: The Journey to War’ is her tribute to him.
She presents a comprehensive portrait of Thomas, the man and his work.
The programme features interviews from Cardiff University’s Special Collections and Archives. Amongst the extensive collection are recordings with Edward Thomas’ widow, Helen, and his daughters, Bronwen and Myfanwy.
Thomas was one of the most important poets of the 20th century, influencing poets such as Ted Hughes, Philip Larkin and R.S. Thomas.
Professor Edna Longley, a leading Edward Thomas scholar, tells Gwyneth that Thomas has a unique place in poetry:
“An extraordinary thing is the number of poets today and in the past century who have written poems to or about Edward Thomas. There is no other poet of whom the same is true. So he is ‘a poet’s poet’ in the best sense of that term.”
He isn’t however, an elitist poet. As Edna Longley says, Thomas, to use Virginia Woolf’s phrase, is also read by ‘the common reader’. His most well-known poem, "Addlestrop" is one of the most requested poems on BBC Radio 4’s “Poetry Please”.
Produced by Dinah Jones.

The world is in crisis. Evolution has gone into reverse, affecting all creatures great and small, including the next generation of humans. Fewer babies - or their mothers - are surviving to full term and, of those babies born, many have been identified as belonging to a more primitive species of human. As governments take drastic action to limit the catastrophe, there has never been a more dangerous time to be having a baby.
Cedar Songmaker is pregnant. She is the adopted daughter of Minneapolis liberals. Determined to find out as much about her baby's make up as possible, she makes contact with her birth family on the Ojibwe reservation.
Omnibus of the first five episodes of Louise Erdrich's ten-part tale.
Despite increasing levels of panic across the country, Cedar sets out to meet her birth mother for the first time.
American author, Louise Erdrich lives in Minnesota. Her novel The Round House won the National Book Award for Fiction. SUN 15:30 Inside the Elephant Mind (b00qxgzw)
Elephants are clever but science is only now beginning to reveal just how smart they really are. Andrew Luck-Baker joins British and Kenyan researchers on the East African savannah who are revealing the depths of the elephant mind with the help of a huge loudspeaker in the back of a Land Rover.
By playing different sound recordings - of elephants, lions and people - at elephant family groups, scientists are probing the sophistication of their memory and pachyderm numerical skills. They are also testing whether elephants can distinguish between different human languages. Anecdotes suggest they can.
Another team of British researchers have been using urine samples and smelly clothes in experiments to probe the agility of elephant grey matter.
All this has been taking place on the plains of Amboseli National Park in Kenya, in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro. Amboseli is home to the world's longest running study of a single elephant population. Started by journalist-turned-biologist Cynthia Moss almost forty years ago, the study is a continuing record of every facet of the lives of every elephant living there. Cynthia Moss says the Amboseli data is ‘gold’ for visiting animal psychologists.
It turns out that that elephants are more intelligent than humans in some respects. For example, elephants have a much better short-term working memory than we do and out-perform people on at least one numerical skill. But why might they need to distinguish between the English language and the language of the local Masaai people? And what does this research tell us about the evolution of animal intelligence in general?
Produced and presented by Andrew Luck-Baker.

Hollywood shows us a wild west populated only by white cowboys. But it's only part of the story, as Sarfraz Manzoor discovers as he goes in search of America's black cowboys.
On his journey through Texas, he finds that the west was populated by both African Americans and Hispanic cowboys, and that their legacy lives on today. He joins a trail ride with black cowboys as they make their way across the dusty plains following the routes of their ancestors. Complete with twelve covered wagons and up to 200 riders on horseback, Sarfraz finds a great pride in this black heritage.
In Wichita, Kansas, he meets one remarkable performer, the very first actor to appear as a black cowboy in the movies of the 1930s. At a time of racial segration in the United States, few white cinema goers would ever have heard of Herb Jeffries, but he was the hero in films such as 'Harlem on the Prairie'. Today Herb Jeffries is about to turn 100.
So how did this part of America get airbrushed out of the movies and the history books? He talks to experts and archivists, as well as those who have lived the life of the range, to find a true life story hidden from sight for many years.

Rachel Parris: Austensibly Feminist
Comedian Rachel Parris, a Jane Austen fan and geek, assesses one of our greatest writer's feminist credentials.
Although Jane Austen wrote about a particular class of women at a particular period in our history , the portraits she drew have resonated with millions of subsequent readers. But rarely is she considered from a feminist perspective.
In this stand-up comedy show recorded in front of a live, virtual audience, Rachel Parris asks us to re-appraise Jane Austen's work and see it in a new light. Albeit a little irreverently.
Do Austen's books pass the Bechdel test? What do her sisters tell us about the sisterhood? What have her women got in common with women today and what can we learn from what Jane Austen had to say about marriage, men and money?

God Only Knows
"God only knows what I'd be without you"
For artist Kim Lynch God Only Knows is a song that she has carried with her from the moment her father played it to her mother back in their 1960's London home and it's the song that resonated throughout her parents 65 years together.
Meanwhile in land locked Burundi, another couple are bought together from two very different cultures. Sharing the same hopes and prayers, they began their married life by blending a traditional wedding ceremony with the Californian song that spans decades - and continents - to touch souls wherever it's played.
And across the ocean, Erin Prewitt tells her love story and describes how tragic and unexpected circumstances meant she has had to learn to live out those iconic lyrics and discover what it means to be without the person you love.
With reflections from musician Al Kooper and author Barry Miles.

WED 14:30 Hollow Earth: A Travel Guide (b05q4zmk)
Comedian Robin Ince takes us on a tour of a world beneath the Earth's crust, exploring the history of Hollow Earth theory through literature, legend and scientific theory.
His tour of this world within a world, starts with the obvious question of how to get into it. Is the entrance at the North Pole, the South Pole or even in Newcastle? With the help of his "tour guides", including the graphic novelist Alan Moore, Robin gets advice on where to descend and what he might see once he gets down there. Is this a Dystopia full of desperate souls, or the Utopia imagined by someone like the messianic 19th century physician Cyrus Teed, who established a hollow earth cult in Florida and whose ideas later went on briefly to inspire the Nazis.
On his subterranean journey, Robin also meets a classicist, a biblical scholar, and a literary critic. Together they explore the physical aspects of this world and consider who he might bump into. Will it be the three-headed dog Cerberus, or the plesiosaurs and dinosaurs of Jules Verne? Or is this voyage into the interior, actually just a journey into the depths of our own minds?

With an exclusive interview with his son Tony Miller, a visit to the Henry Miller Memorial Library, in Big Sur, Addonizio hears great stories of epic table tennis tournaments during the long winters, struggles to make ends meet, as she meets those who remember Miller's time in the woods during his 18 year stay.

Van Morrison made a number of references in his songs to the east Belfast neighbourhood in which he grew up, none more directly than in Cyprus Avenue from his 1968 album Astral Weeks. Romantic images of leaves shaking on a tree, rainbow ribbons in a young girl's hair and a mansion on the hill evoke memories of Cyprus Avenue in the years before Van left Northern Ireland to pursue his career in the States.
Cyprus Avenue - with its intricate arrangement of flute, harpsichord and strings - was recorded in New York, far from the well-heeled, tree-lined avenue along which the young Van would pass on his way home to the working class area of Hyndford Street. This was in the years before the Troubles. East Belfast was steadfastly loyalist and protestant.
When the arts broadcaster Marie-Louise Muir moved into the area, she was already aware of the iconic quality of street's name - not just from Van Morrison's song, but from the fact that the Reverend Ian Paisley lived on Cyprus Avenue. Marie-Louise was a Catholic ‘blow-in’. So, when Van announced that he'd be celebrating his 70th birthday by playing a gig literally feet from her front door, she was curious to see how the community would respond.
