Good Luck Professor Spiegelhalter
Whether we believe in luck or not, we do use the word- a lot ! More as a figure of speech than an article of faith perhaps but some do pray for luck, others fantasize about it - and bad luck or misfortune is a staple of comedy.
Can Luck be said to exist as some force in our lives and if so, what is its nature? How have people thought about luck in the past and what's changed today? Can you bring good luck upon yourself - there's a school of thought these days that thinks you can without appealing to the divine or supernatural.
Professor Spiegelhalter, the Winton Professor for the Public Understanding of Risk at Cambridge University looks at notions of luck in gambling, traces the origins of how we think about fate and fortune, the religious and psychological view of luck and how the emergence of theory of probability changed our view of it.
He is convinced by the philosopher Angie Hobbs that there is one form of luck it is rational to believe in and by psychologist Richard Wiseman that there is a secular solution to bringing about good fortune in your life.

Fashion Designers
Barbara Hulanicki
From Chopin to Bob Marley.
Designer and creator of Biba, Barbara Hulanicki shares her castaway choices with Kirsty Young.
Today her creativity spans fashion, illustration, interior design and architecture but it was the success of the label Biba that first made her name; launching a high street revolution with its opulent-looking but entirely affordable high fashion. According to Twiggy, "she changed fashion in England singlehandedly".
A newspaper advert for a £3 pink gingham dress in 1963 kicked things off and by the seventies her London department store was a throbbing temple to all things skinny-fitted in plum, mulberry, green, brown and black. Romantic, mysterious, nostalgic and very profitable. But when it all turned sour with her business partners, she and her husband Fitz walked away, leaving behind the hugely popular creation that had made her name.
The fantasy and perfection of her creations were a far cry from the harsh reality of her childhood; born in Poland just before the Second World War, the air of privilege that surrounded her family was traumatically punctured when her father, a diplomat, was assassinated.
She says "Now whenever I finish something I take some photographs and say 'goodbye'. When you lose everything, you realise that the only thing you have is what's in your head."

Cicada
One of the great wild sounds of North America is the purring of insects in the evening, especially that of Cicadas, one of the great stridulating sounds in the wild.
This is the tale of one Cicada; the 17-year periodic Cicada that stunned the community in New England 13 years after the Pilgrim Fathers had landed. There was a plague of insects, all with red eyes on stalks - and all emerging continuously out of the soil.
When the plague subsided a few weeks later the people of Plymouth Rock were braced for another onslaught, but nothing happened until 17 years later.
Sir David Attenborough recalls a filming trip to New England to film this species of Cicada with both fascinating natural history and a hilarious twist.

SUN 13:00 The Wood by John Lewis-Stempel (Omnibus) (b09wv0q8)
Over 12 months, this is the story of Cockshutt Wood in Herefordshire.
It's representative of all the small woods in our landscape and the sanctuary they provide.
From January through to December, John Lewis-Stempel records the passage of the seasons in exquisite prose, as the cuckoo flits through the green shade in the silence and the wind of winter.
He explores from the roots of the oak to its tips, under the black, spicy leaf mould of the woodland floor and up into the mysterious canopy.
It's a unique account of the animals that inhabit this refuge - the fox, the pheasant, the wood mouse and the tawny owl, among others - with the stories of their births, lives and deaths threaded through the book.

SUN 15:30 Rock 'n' Roll in Four Movements (b01m182x)
When Rock 'n' Roll began, it was music of rebellion, fighting against the strait-laced world of classical music. Then along came Jon Lord…
Lord combined the forces of Deep Purple with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in ‘Concerto for Rock Group and Orchestra’. It premiered in 1969 at London’s Royal Albert Hall under the baton of Malcolm Arnold.
From that point until the arrival of Punk in the late seventies, rockers like The Nice, Emerson Lake and Palmer and Rick Wakeman embraced this hybrid genre. Rick Wakeman in particular became known for his elaborate stage shows which matched the ambition of his music.
Stuart Maconie talks to Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson about the genre's excesses. We hear from Roy Wood about the early days of the Electric Light Orchestra. And the late Jon Lord, in his last ever recorded interview, talks about his passion for writing classical music, inspired by his early experiment with the genre.
Stuart Maconie feels some of it was actually very good. However, classical music critic, Ivan Hewett, is pleased that the genre was largely killed off by Punk. Although, in his view, there are better examples where classical and pop sensibilities are successfully combined, by the likes of Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead and Damon Albarn.

MON 14:30 Sibelius: A Symphony that Burned (b01kjt7h)
The story of Jean Sibelius's Eighth Symphony - with extracts from new musical fragments performed exclusively for the programme.
One morning in 1945, Jean Sibelius, took the pages of a symphony that had brought him to the brink of despair and burned the lot. The composer wanted to destroy the work before it destroyed him.
His Eighth Symphony became the most notorious 'lost work' in classical music. Not a single note could be traced. And then, in 2011, three, short, fragments of music were revealed - the culmination of years of painstaking research through piles of manuscript sketches. The only evidence of any orchestral work by Sibelius during the 'silence of Ainola'. And almost certainly the only tantalising glimpse we may ever have of his fabled Eighth Symphony.
Writer and broadcaster Peggy Reynolds visits Sibelius's home near Helsinki to unpick - for the first time - the riddle of Sibelius's Eighth Symphony, with contributions from the British conductor and Sibelius expert Sir Mark Elder. Peggy also presents a performance of newly-discovered musical fragments, performed exclusively for the programme by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra under John Storgards. After nine decades, this may be the closest we ever get to experiencing the most infamous lost work in 20th century music.

Episode 6- Domestic Blitz
A sitcom, written by Moray Hunter and starring Angus Deayton, Abigail Cruttenden, Pearce Quigley, Kate Isitt and Bennett Arron, about five, mainly single, middle aged neighbours living in flats in a converted house in North London.
Mitch (Angus Deayton) is a widower and part-time therapist who is looking to put his life back together now that he is single and living with Will (Pearce Quigley), his younger, more volatile half-brother. Mitch is currently in a new relationship with Ellie (Abigail Cruttenden) who is a somewhat shy, nervous and sensitive schoolteacher. Overly honest, frustrated actress Louisa (Kate Isitt), and socially inept IT nerd Morris (Bennett Arron) complete the line-up of mis-matched neighbours.
In the final episode of the series, Ellie asks an out of work Louisa to clean for her, which turns out to be a fractious undertaking, and then fills her newly won free time by taking up wild swimming, much to Mitch’s dismay initially, although there are unexpected benefits. Will meanwhile takes in a boozy delivery for Morris, which proves to be not quite as straightforward a task as initially advertised by Morris.

German comedian and broadcaster Henning Wehn explores the fast-growing use of ELF – English as a lingua franca. Around the world there are an estimated 800m non-native speakers of English and the number is growing all the time.
Through talking to French, German, Brazilian and even American expats based in the UK, Henning discovers that just having the English vocabulary and grasping of grammar doesn't really help foreigners understand the nuanced, elliptical way that the British speak their own language.
From Japanese estate agents to French web entrepreneurs, non-native English speakers are baffled by the way the natives communicate using humour, obscure idioms based on cricket or rugby and the understated codes of class and status.
Henning talks to academics and consultants in the fast-growing field of ELF and learns that it is rapidly developing a grammar and structure of its own – often not understood by native English speakers.

WED 14:30 Inside the Elephant Mind (b00qxgzw)
Elephants are clever but science is only now beginning to reveal just how smart they really are. Andrew Luck-Baker joins British and Kenyan researchers on the East African savannah who are revealing the depths of the elephant mind with the help of a huge loudspeaker in the back of a Land Rover.
By playing different sound recordings - of elephants, lions and people - at elephant family groups, scientists are probing the sophistication of their memory and pachyderm numerical skills. They are also testing whether elephants can distinguish between different human languages. Anecdotes suggest they can.
Another team of British researchers have been using urine samples and smelly clothes in experiments to probe the agility of elephant grey matter.
All this has been taking place on the plains of Amboseli National Park in Kenya, in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro. Amboseli is home to the world's longest running study of a single elephant population. Started by journalist-turned-biologist Cynthia Moss almost forty years ago, the study is a continuing record of every facet of the lives of every elephant living there. Cynthia Moss says the Amboseli data is ‘gold’ for visiting animal psychologists.
It turns out that that elephants are more intelligent than humans in some respects. For example, elephants have a much better short-term working memory than we do and out-perform people on at least one numerical skill. But why might they need to distinguish between the English language and the language of the local Masaai people? And what does this research tell us about the evolution of animal intelligence in general?
Produced and presented by Andrew Luck-Baker.

The photographer and former Picture Editor at The Guardian, Eamonn McCabe, curates a photo exhibition on the radio, featuring images that have moved and inspired him during a career which has spanned nearly 60 years.
Pictures by acclaimed war photographer Don McCullin and portrait photographer David Bailey remind Eamonn of his youth in North London. He talks to the British photographer Michael Kenna about the tricks of light and the merits of black and white versus colour prints. He also offers some very personal reflections on his colleague at the Observer, Jane Bown.
We hear from Joel Meyerowitz whose images of the aftermath of the attack on the World Trade Center in September 2001 offer a visceral example of photo reportage, despite being taken after the event. Joel's moving account, courtesy of The National September 11 Memorial and Museum, raises questions about whether it is right to make something aesthetic from something tragic.
Other photographers featured include French greats Willy Ronis and Jacques-Henri Lartigue, Hungarian colour specialist Nickolas Muray, the Observer sports photographer Chris Smith - famous for his pictures of Muhammad Ali, and the cult British photographer Raymond Moore.

The second guest is journalist Martin Popplewell, who was inspired as a teenager to try desert island life by Brooke Shields in the film ‘The Blue Lagoon’.

FRI 14:30 Mockery With Monocles: The Western Brothers Revealed (b01nxwmw)
Geoffrey Palmer celebrates the songs of Kenneth and George Western and reveals their place in British comedy.
The Western Brothers became famous from the late 1920s onwards for their variety act satirising the establishment of the time. They perfected the aloof exaggerations of two derisive upper-crust society members and became an instant success in the entertainment world. They toured the variety circuit through the 1930s and 40s with their own aeroplane and always stayed in the very best hotels.
What made their witty songs at the piano so distinct was their topicality. Many of them were list songs, in which the verses could be altered to fit the stories and personalities of the day. Fellow performers, politicians and especially the stuffiness of the BBC were their targets then, after war broke out, they laid into the enemy with rather more finesse than most.
They became as famous for their appearance with monocles and old school ties as for their voices. Their photos frequently appeared in newspaper advertisements endorsing a variety of products. Their 'targets' mostly took the gentle barbs in good grace, but there were several occasions when their jokes attracted complaint. These included upsetting the Greek embassy, suggesting nepotism at the heart of government, which necessitated an immediate written apology.
Contributors include Barry Humphries, Kit Hesketh-Harvey, Mitch Benn, Stan Stennett and the daughters of Kenneth and George Western.
