Series 2
Chet Baker's Last Tour Manager
Chet Baker, the jazz trumpeter and singer came to prominence after he joined the Gerry Mulligan quartet in 1952 at the heart of the world’s first piano-less jazz quartet and the originator of cool jazz.
Using their instruments, (Gerry Mulligan on baritone sax and Chet Baker on trumpet, sometimes singing) and playing engaging, contrapuntal improvisations they made a startling breakthrough in cool jazz. Chet Baker, the singing, trumpet playing star was hatched.
When the elements of sex, jazz and cool combined they created the equivalent of an intellectual nuclear fusion. No one encapsulates that explosion better than the arrival on the jazz scene of Chet Baker.
Jim Coleman, owner of a hi fi store on New York's 2nd Avenue managed Chet’s touring schedules for the last four years of his life. Chet was unable to play in certain American clubs as a result of his being criminalised by heroin addiction. He had been busted in Europe too.
Jim tells the story of how they met briefly across three time periods: once when Jim was thirteen and studying trumpet in Rome, when his sister Joan married Chet's bass player and when Jim opened his hi fi store. In the eighties Jim offered to manage Chet's difficult touring schedule. A moving and fascinating account of the final years of Chet Baker as they intertwined with the owner of a hi fi shop, as Chet tried to tour the US and Europe whilst in the fatal grip of heroin addiction.

Here's Looking at You, Parents!
At home, surrounded by their own parenting paraphernalia, comedy couple Josie Long and Jonny Donahoe leap into the fictional and factual world of parenting to discover what lessons we can learn or loose from our TV and Radio counterparts.
Script writers from every generation have embraced parents, and the misadventures of mums and dads have kept TV and Radio in business for decades. In the early days, putting parents on TV and Radio was all about showing us how it 'should' be done, but in recent years writers have reflected back to us what we’re really like!
And as family set ups have evolved from mum and dad, to mum and mum, dad and dad or mums or dad, Radio and TV writers have travelled that route too. Parents have provided them with a seemingly endless source of material which in turn has provided us with ideas as to how to parent better or simply reassured us that we’re not the only ones doing it badly.
From 'Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em' to 'Motherland', sit back, relax and enjoy a journey of parenting mayhem and memories that will unite us all!
Presented by Josie Long and Jonny Donahoe
Produced by Nicola Humphries
Featuring TV Writer and Critic Michael Hogan, Jennifer Traig, author of Act Natural: A Cultural History of Misadventures in Parenting, and Dr Charlotte Faircloth, Lecturer in Sociology of Gender at UCL.

But she's been told by the same long-suffering wife that unless she finds a way to switch off, and soon, she's going to be unbearable.
So Susan is looking at her options to try and immerse herself in the pursuits that her friends find relaxing, to find her inner zen and outer tranquillity. Can she ditch the old Susan Calman and attempt to find the new Susan Calm?
This time, John Finnemore takes her on a spontaneous holiday.

All major opera houses rely on well- established productions of repertoire classics.
Puccini's La Bohème is a permanent fixture in the list of the world's top five operas as measured by performance numbers.
John Copley's 1974 staging at London’s Covent Garden was a familiar and much loved favourite. However it’s time to replace it with a new production and the challenge to do that with a fresh staging falls to the team of Music Director, Sir Antonio Pappano and stage director, Richard Jones.
Follow Maestro Pappano as it all takes shape – as he works with singers, discussing the particular challenges of operating at the very highest level of operatic performance and expectation - and giving candid insights into the often perilous journey to an opening night.
His on and off stage teams, include the young cast who are acutely aware that the production they are replacing opened with singers like Placido Domingo and Sir Thomas Allen. There are also stage directors, set-builders, movement directors and Maestro Pappano's trusted repetiteur.

"He is" as one orchestra member says, "more of a storyteller than a conductor. Everything he tells us is about the drama and the dramatic purpose of what's happening on stage."

Her every woman yet no-holds-barred style of comedy has brought her sell-out tours and several of her own highly successful TV series. Revelling in normality and drawing on the difficult, intimate and ofter extruciating moments of being human, she dares to say what most of us are thinking, only she's much funnier.
A Geordie, born in South Shields, her dad was an engineer down the mines and her mum was a hairdresser. They encouraged their daughter in her storytelling and performing even though her childhood shyness meant she'd recite her poetry from behind the living room curtains.
Later it was pain that first propelled her onto the stage when a broken early marriage provided the catalyst she needed to find the courage to confront the glaring judgement of the audience's gaze. Her rise was then rapid. Within four years she was awarded the Best Newcomer prize at the Edinburgh Fringe.
She says, "People come along and think, 'oh she's being too rude'. They don't realise I'm just like this at home. People think I'm prim and proper at home but I'm not - I'm just me transplanted onto the stage".

SUN 10:45 David Attenborough's Life Stories (b00yrg3g)
Series 2
Kiwi
New Zealand had several species of flightless bird living across the islands, all of which are now extinct, bar one.
The Kiwi has become one of those species iconic of the country, like the Koala to Australia, the Giraffe to Africa and the Alpaca to South America.
Historically, New Zealand didn't have ground predators such as wild cats and stoats - which allowed birds to exploit living on the ground. Being flightless in New Zealand was a good way to be a bird.
Having filmed Kiwis, Sir David Attenborough muses on the niche the Kiwi occupies on the ground. He argues the Kiwi behaves more like a mammal than a bird, but what mammal do you think, in his view, the Kiwi most resembles..?

SUN 15:30 The Disused Chapel on the Cornish Skyline (b06s871d)
Petroc Trelawny investigates what has happened to a distinguishing feature of Cornwall - its chapels.
Petroc grew up in St Martin, on the Lizard, and went to Sunday school at the Methodist chapel. Producer Julian May lived in Carnon Downs, near Truro. He sometimes went to Quenchwell Chapel.
Cornish life revolved round chapels: as well as services and Sunday schools there were ‘tea treats’, anniversary feasts, concerts and a strong social network.
Clive Buckingham, a Methodist and an architect, takes Petroc to Ponsanooth, a small village with a huge, beautiful, grade II* listed chapel that seats 600. Once workers from the nearby gunpowder works filled its pews. These, like Cornish miners and fishermen were wild people. Then, in the 19th century, came religious revival. Billy Bray, famously dissolute, was ‘saved’, became a preacher and built chapels with his own hands.
In the 1850's, archivist David Thomas says, there were 1,200 chapels in Cornwall. Fewer than 200 are still used. Today only 20 or so people worship at Ponsanooth. The disused chapel on the Cornish skyline is a familiar sight.
But, Petroc discovers, some find new life. St Martin chapel is now a family home. Quenchwell chapel has been converted, too, and Tipu Choudhury tells Petroc how it became the Cornwall Islamic Community Centre. The chapel on the skyline at Tregona is tiny, made of cob and remote. Petroc meets Andrew Tebbs and Jane Darke, artists who, resisting attempts to turn it into a holiday cottage, are making it an art space, an amenity, as it always was, for locals.
Petroc tells the story of the abandonment and rebirth of Cornwall’s chapels.
He also meets those still worshipping, who think it's not the chapels that need converting, but the people.

1. Tall Stories
After nearly three decades reporting conflict from all over the world for the BBC, Fergal Keane goes home to Ireland to tell a story that lies at the root of his fascination with war.
It's a family tale about how the ghosts of the past return to shape the present.
Fergal's grandmother, Hanna Purtill, her brother Mick and his friend Con Brosnan, along with many of their neighbours, found themselves caught up in the revolution that followed the 1916 Easter Rising. They took up guns to fight the British Empire and create an independent Ireland.
Many thousands of people took part in the War of Independence and the Civil War that followed.
Whatever side they chose, all were changed in some way by the costs of violence. Fergal uses the experiences of his ancestral homeland in north Kerry to examine why people will kill for a cause and how the act of killing reverberates through the generations.
In this opening episode, Fergal recalls his father's tall stories about ghosts around the family home. But one such story, that of the murdered soldier on the street outside, turned out to have a basis in truth.
Abridged by Anna Magnusson.

Episode 1
After being accused of deceit by the publisher of Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë and her sister Anne, leave Haworth and rush down to London to put the matter right.
The first of five momentous visits Charlotte Brontë made to the capital in the course of her short-lived but meteoric literary career.
These trips chart the story of her relationship with her young publisher (and his watchful, horrified Mama), Charlotte's wide-eyed enthusiasm at visiting the place of her childhood dreams at long last and being lionized as a writer by readers.
We see her difficult relationships with other authors and critics - and then the gradual disillusionment setting in as this intense, painfully honest and gauche Yorkshire novelist gradually acquires self knowledge and a clear-eyed view of the cruel and shallow fashionable literary world she had long aspired to be part of.

A sitcom, written by Moray Hunter and starring Angus Deayton, Abigail Cruttenden, Pearce Quigley, Kate Isitt and Bennett Arron, about five, mainly single, middle aged neighbours living in flats in a converted house in North London.

Overly honest, frustrated actress Louisa (Kate Isitt), and socially inept IT nerd Morris (Bennett Arron) complete the line-up of mis-matched neighbours.
In episode two, things get fraught when Louisa tries to make friends with Nina, (Jocelyn Jee Esien) Morris’ sort of ex, after they had a brief half-a-night stand a while back, and then it gets even more complicated when Will gets involved as well. Ellie meanwhile makes it her mission to look after Morris and persuades a very reluctant Mitch to help her.

2. Volunteers
After nearly three decades reporting conflict from all over the world for the BBC, Fergal Keane is back home in Ireland to tell a story that lies at the root of his fascination with war.
In this episode, Fergal's grandmother and uncle - Hanna and Mick - join the Irish Volunteers and blood is spilled in their hometown of Listowel when a Royal Irish Constabulary sergeant is ambushed by IRA volunteers.
Abridged by Anna Magnusson.

TUE 14:15 Charlotte Brontë in Babylon by Charlotte Cory (b07378cp)
Episode 2
After the death of her brother and sisters, Charlotte Brontë returns to London to face the critics of her second novel Shirley.
One of five momentous visits Charlotte Brontë made to the capital in the course of her short-lived but meteoric literary career.
These trips chart the story of her relationship with her young publisher (and his watchful, horrified Mama), Charlotte's wide-eyed enthusiasm at visiting the place of her childhood dreams at long last and being lionized as a writer by readers.
We see her difficult relationships with other authors and critics - and then the gradual disillusionment setting in as this intense, painfully honest and gauche Yorkshire novelist gradually acquires self-knowledge and a clear-eyed view of the cruel and shallow fashionable literary world she had long aspired to be part of.

TUE 14:30 The Taking Part (b01jqd3s)
Tim Franks recalls the 1972 Munich Olympics, when Dame Mary Peters triumphed in the Pentathlon.
For millions of British TV viewers, the grainy picture of Mary giving her all was the brightest moment of a games lit up by Mark Spitz and Olga Korbut - only to be blighted by the massacre of Israeli athletes.
But for the others competing in the Pentathlon, this was also their moment, their chance to take part in Olympic competition.
Tim asks those who strove to beat Mary, what impact being an Olympian had on their lives.
German, Heide Rosendahl lost out by the blink of an eye, while Canadian, Diane Jones gashed her leg on the hurdles in the first event.
And Tim goes further into the field, hearing from the other British athlete Anne Wilson who was well-placed after the first event, and Margaret Murphy, the Republic of Ireland's only competitor. And way back down the field, Lin Chu-Yu.
In this unique view of those two days of competition and the lives that followed, Tim hears how these Olympic memories have played out 40 years on.
So was it enough just to take part?
Or are there nagging frustrations still about the tiny margins between winning and losing?
Or the giant chasms between the competitors supported by their national sporting bodies - and those, like Margaret Murphy, who relied on the goodwill of local schools and a generous priest who cleared a run-up to a temporary sandpit so that she could work on her long jump.

3. Haunting Death
In the third episode, the war comes into the town when the IRA send round an order that District Inspector Tobias O'Sullivan must be killed. Con Brosnan is one of the volunteers who respond to that call. The death of O'Sullivan will haunt Fergal Keane's family through the generations.

WED 14:15 Charlotte Brontë in Babylon by Charlotte Cory (b0738hly)
Episode 3
Drama charting five momentous visits Charlotte Brontë made to London as a published author. When Charlotte Brontë's publisher George takes her on a whirlwind tour of London, she begins to question if pleasure is replacing business in their relationship.
Charlotte Brontë made 5 trips down to London in the course of her momentous, short-lived but meteoric literary career.

WED 14:30 The Big Noise (b00sqkgj)
A music project in Scotland is aiming to improve life for the kids of Stirling.
The Simon Bolivar National Youth Orchestra under conductor Gustavo Dudamel stole the show at both the Proms and the Edinburgh Festival, offering real proof of the talent and virtuosity that has emerged from the El Sistema programme in Venezuela.
Can Scotland's version of El Sistema - dubbed The Big Noise - achieve as much in the deprived area of The Raploch near Stirling? Lesley Riddoch finds out.
In June 2008, Sistema Scotland, the brainchild of former bishop and current chair of Creative Scotland Richard Holloway, got underway in the Raploch. Its aim - to inspire and galvanise the education and motivation of children from all backgrounds through involvement in orchestral musicianship. Ability is irrelevant. Anyone can join.
It's a project that's not lacked critics. Some argue it takes attention and money away from existing outreach projects. Others resent the insistence on classical music. Richard Holloway is convinced it will boost confidence, pride and empathy, and thereby articulacy and educational ability, both in children and in the wider community.
Two years on, the Big Noise's first full orchestra is launched and Lesley Riddoch takes stock to analyse what the Venezuelan initiative can do in a UK context.

David Blunkett talks about how failure wasn't an option during his rise to political high office.
Blind from birth, he talks openly about the isolation of attending boarding school from the age of four, as well as the trauma of losing his father at the age of twelve.
Coming from a deprived background, David recognised very quickly that his route out of poverty was through education and against all odds, he graduated from Sheffield University at the age of 22.
David went on to become the youngest-ever councillor on Sheffield City Council, and climbed his way through the political ladder to become the first ever blind Home Secretary.

WED 22:30 Paul Sinha's History Revision (b08vzq7y)
Series 3
Episode 3
Comedian and quizzer Paul Sinha returns to Radio 4 for a third series of his award-winning History Revision. In previous series, Paul has told you how Portugal's invasion of Morocco in 1415 lead directly to the 2014 World Cup; how the 1909 launch of an Austro-Hungarian submarine prevented Dr Zhivago winning an Oscar; and the story the black woman who refused to give up a seat on an Alabama bus and ended up changing the law - no, it wasn't Rosa Parks.
This series will once again see Paul shine a light on the important historical moments that you never got taught at school, and explain why so much of what you did learn is wrong. There will also, as ever, be puns.
In this third episode of the series, Paul explores the idea of 'greatness'. From an English king who we know less about than we think, to the Pope that accidentally killed millions of people, some leaders seem to get away with their dirty laundry being left unaired. But there are also some leaders who truly deserve the title 'The Great', including another Pope, and a brutal tyrant who changed his ways. Paul also looks at other countries' versions of the BBC's 100 Greatest Britons: who do the foreign general public think are "Great"? The answers may surprise you.
Paul Sinha's History Revision was the winner of the 2016 Rose d'Or for 'Best Radio Comedy'.

Things are taking off for our socially awkward and neurotic part-time comedian now he is a fully fledged internet sensation. Michael is asked to attend the Webber’s Comedy Awards, but he is only needed to present an award, not to receive one. Even so, this is the first time Michael has been invited to such a prestigious industry event and wife Roberta insists he attends - as long as she can come too.
Roberta is more excited about the awards ceremony than Michael, as she spies a chance to network and create new opportunities for his burgeoning comedy career. But his integrity is compromised as organiser Charlie insists Michael says something nice about the sponsor, Webber’s Hot Chocolate. This is difficult for Michael as Webber’s Hot Chocolate tastes like puddles.
His nerves are also stretched by small talk with comedy bore and mainstream sitcom writer Terry Moon while Roberta tries to sell Michael to TV producers in the room.
And the stress of Michael’s day job as a copywriter at a kitchen worktop company intensifies after an ominous corridor encounter with a new recruit.
As Michael’s anxiety goes full throttle, even a call from 1920s cabaret star and war heroine Josephine Baker fails to calm his nerves and he gives the most explosive presentation speech in the history of the Webber’s Comedy Awards. Or does he?
As Roberta attempts to become Michael’s manager and thrust him into the limelight outside the social media where he has become successful, will he break through into television and radio? It’s only Episode Two so this is still in your hands. Listen to the show. He’s been trying for 20 years with only cult success until now. So give it a sympathy listen, if nothing else. That would be good.

WG Grace died in 1915, but he still looms over the sport of cricket like no other player. He was arguably the most famous man of the late Victorian era, a true celebrity with an appeal that spanned the class system and reached across the British Empire.

Charlie Connelly comes across WG Grace in the last years of the great batsman's life, as his sporting career ends and his form begins to fade.
Faced with great personal tragedies, and distressed by the slaughter of the First World War, Grace emerges as a complex and troubled man, a long way from the stoical buttoned up Victorian that is so often portrayed.

5. The Legacy of War
In the final episode, Fergal looks back on his grandparents' generation to examine the cost and legacy of war in Ireland. He reflects on how the wounds of the past shaped the island on which he grew up. "I look back on my grandparents' generation and see a people exhausted and traumatised by conflict."

FRI 14:15 Charlotte Brontë in Babylon by Charlotte Cory (b073b18t)
Episode 5
Drama charting five momentous visits Charlotte Brontë made to London. Charlotte Brontë arrives to an awkward reception in the Smith household. It seems her hosts are not at all pleased with their depiction in Charlotte's new novel Villette.
Charlotte Brontë made 5 trips down to London in the course of her momentous, short-lived but meteoric literary career.

Tina Turner's Dancer
Andrew McGibbon talks to Anne Behringer, Tina Turner's dancer in her touring band at the height of her fame as a solo stage performer during the nineties.
Tina Turner remains one of the greatest r'n'b singers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Her partnership with Ike Turner produced one of the most electrifying live acts in the 1960s. After her split with abusive husband Ike, her career revived in the 1980s. The spectacle of Live Aid and the explosion of corporate CD rock in that decade led Tina to an astonishing level of global success in sales and on stage. It made her an international star and, critically, a universal performer, appealing to both black and white audiences.
Anne Behringer was born into a liberal New England family brought up to believe that everybody was equal regardless of tribe, colour and religion. Anne was also a serial dancer from a very early age - almost, it seems, since she could walk.
During the most significant time in Tina Turner's career, Anne, having recovered from major drug and alcohol abuse, was then offered work on Tina's world tour. This meant exposure to the drugs and alcohol all over again. Could Anne cope with being on a world tour, a dry singer in a world surrounded by temptation?
She went on to set up the internationally renowned Promises chain of rehabs. But, as Tina's white dancer in a US tour, she experienced first hand the racism still alive in America's deep south.
Written and presented by Andrew McGibbon.
Producers: Nick Romero and Louise Morris
