SAT 02:00 Every Third Thought by Robert McCrum (b093jsrn)
Episode 5
Despite thoughts of decline and death, Robert finds new hope through a new love.
Witty, lucid and provocative, this Robert McCrum's enthralling exploration of what it means to approach the end-game, and begin to recognise, perhaps reluctantly, that we are not immortal.
In 1995, aged 42, Robert suffered a dramatic and near-fatal stroke - the subject of his acclaimed memoir My Year Off.
Ever since that life-changing event, he has lived in the shadow of death, unavoidably aware of his own mortality. And now, 21 years on, he is noticing a change - his friends are joining him there. Death has become his contemporaries' every third thought.
The question is no longer "who am I?" - but "how long have I got?" and "what happens next?"
With the words of Robert's favourite authors as travel companions, Every Third Thought takes us on a journey through a year and towards death itself. As he acknowledges his own and his friends' ageing, he confronts an existential question - in a world where we have learned to live well at all costs, can we make peace with what Freud calls "the necessity of dying"?
Searching for answers leads him to others for advice and wisdom.

SAT 02:30 The Keskidee (b00k4fv9)
Oral Historian Alan Dein pieces together the remarkable and pioneering story of the Keskidee, Britain's first arts centre for the black community.
Founded in the early 1970's and tucked away in a church hall in the backstreets of Islington, London, it forged new ground for a generation of black British poets, actors, artists and directors.
Dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson was the educational officer at the Keskidee and Bob Marley shot the music video for 'Is This Love?' there. It had its own drama company, artists in residence and was a hub for African and Afro-Caribbean politics and arts, as well as a creative nursery for home-grown talent. It also catered for the needs of local youth and gave a generation of black teenagers a space of their own.
But this massively influential cultural centre also has a fascinating earlier history, when it served as a progressive mission hall with a musical pastor and a legendary silver band. Today the building has reverted to being a religious base, housing an African church and a devout and joyous congregation.
Dein joins up the hidden history of Gifford Hall which has played host to three different communities, but which, curiously, have much in common.

Series 1
Bristol to Penzance
Author, actor and comedy icon, Alexei Sayle continues his travels across the country by rail in the third of a new six part series for Radio 4.
Alexei’s mission is to break the golden rule of travelling by train and actually talk to his fellow passengers in a quest for conversations that reveal their lives, hopes, dreams and destinations. There’s humour, sadness and surprise as people talk about what is going on in their lives and, as Alexei passes through familiar towns and cities, he also tells stories and memories from his career and childhood.
Alexei has a lifelong "ticket to ride" in his DNA. His father was a railway guard and the Sayle family benefitted from free travel in the UK and across Europe. As a boy, Alexei and his family roamed far and wide from the family home in Anfield, Liverpool. At a time when most people thought an exciting trip by train was to Brighton or Blackpool, Alexei travelled thousands of miles to mysterious towns with unpronounceable names in far flung corners of the continent.
In each programme in the series, he embarks on a rail journey, taking a chance on who he might meet and inviting them to have a conversation with him. In this episode, Alexei travels from Bristol to Penzance and meets Bert, a Cornish Bard, Marissa and Leanne who have travelled the world working on cruise liners, Angela who for many years ran one of Cornwall's most famous and historic pubs, and Astra who is learning the ropes at circus school.

Shappi Khorsandi on Emma, Lady Hamilton
Comedian and author Shappi Khorsandi has been desperate to tell the story of Emma, Lady Hamilton as she’s quite simply one of her greatest fans.
Everyone knows Emma Hamilton as simply the seducer of Admiral Horatio Nelson but according to Shappi she was more than that; history has simply palmed her off as a prostitute, a mistress, without looking at the deeper story of what she suffered and endured.
In this programme Shappi, with help from Professor Kate Williams, author of ‘England’s Mistress’, makes the case for how this woman born into poverty clawed her way up through London’s sordid underworld and became fantastically famous posing for artist George Romney. She also became an ambassador’s wife and mixed in diplomatic circles and became the confidante of both Marie Antoinette and the Queen of Naples.
Will presenter Matthew Parris be convinced and accept Emma, Lady Hamilton as a great life.

SAT 09:00 How to Have a Hit Show (b09sn83p)
Maria Friedman - actress, singer and musical theatre director - explores the BBC archives to hear advice from the great songwriters of the past about How to Have a Hit Show.
The BBC archives teem with interviews with the great songwriters which were carried out for landmark series like "Ragtime to Rock'n'Roll" decades ago, but which have rarely had an airing since, apart from short snippets. All the songwriting greats are there- from early interviews with Rodgers and Hammerstein to Irving Berlin, Yip Harburg, Dorothy Fields and Cy Coleman. More modern songwriters like Stephen Sondheim and many others also feature strongly. Recordings of the legendary song performers also abound - the great names who premiered the seminal show roles like Ethel Merman, and Mary Martin.
This special three-hour showcase compilation takes us through the journey of writing a hit musical show, from first thought to the final performance as seen through the eyes - and ears- of these great names.
Divided into different sections - The Idea, The Producer, The Songs, The Orchestrator etc - Maria uses the archives to take us on a journey which explores all the different facets of songwriting, promoting and plugging within the narrative of composing that one elusive hit show. With examples like Alan Jay Lerner describing how he sweated over one line in a lyric for two months, we provide a window into a creative world interwoven with music.
Maria will also re-introduce us to some standalone programmes featuring the great names of songwriting history and the musicals they created.

Beckett's Last Tapes
Robert McCrum explores the elusive Samuel Beckett’s astonishing literary career through rare audio tape recordings from the Samuel Beckett Research Centre at the University of Reading.
Housed in the unlikely spot of the Museum of English Rural Life, Beckett - the lifelong outsider - would have enjoyed the absurdity of finding his archives next to dairy farming data and combine harvester records. As a result, perhaps not unintentionally, Beckett's tapes have remained here as a well-kept secret.
Many of the tapes are interviews recorded by Beckett's friend, the scholar James Knowlson, while he was researching an official biography. The interviews they contain reveal fascinating insights into the way Samuel Beckett worked closely and collaboratively with his actors and friends - including Sian Phillips, Paul Daneman, Billie Whitelaw and Harold Pinter - and the respect they showed for him in return.
Taking Krapp's Last Tape as inspiration for this programme, Robert tells the story of the Samuel Beckett archive at Reading and invites surviving collaborators, friends and those who have found inspiration in Beckett's work.
These include:
Tom Stoppard
Edna O'Brien
Sian Phillips
Lisa Dwan
Lady Antonia Fraser
James Knowlson
Robert asks them to listen to extracts from the tapes and reflect on his unique method and the expression of his genius.
Robert aims to gain new insight into the mind of one of the 20th century's literary giants, while bringing out the poignancy and nostalgia involved in revisiting memories and life-events through the tapes.

Chi-chi Nwanoku
Chi-chi Nwanoku is a double bass player and founder of Europe's first professional majority black and minority ethnic orchestra, Chineke!.
Chi-chi is the eldest of five children, born to a Nigerian father and an Irish mother. Early on, she discovered two competing passions: playing the piano and 100 metre sprinting. She was aiming to qualify for the 1976 Olympics when she suffered a knee injury which cut short her life as an athlete. Her music teacher then suggested that she could have a career as a musician if she took up 'an unpopular orchestral instrument'. She began learning the double bass a week later.
She was a student at the Royal Academy of Music and for over 30 years has played with renowned orchestras, including the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, English Baroque Soloists, London Classical Players and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment , which she co-founded and where she was principal double bass for three decades.
In 2015, she set up Chineke! to support, inspire and encourage black and minority ethnic musicians. Last year the Chineke! orchestra made its debut at the BBC Proms, and Chi-chi was awarded an OBE for her services to music.

Past Tense, Future Perfect
True stories told live in the USA: Meg Bowles introduces stories about moments and memories that mold the future.
The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.
The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.
Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.
The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.

Series 2
A Job for Matt
Matt - Lost Voice Guy - decides to turn over a new leaf and earn some money legally. He advertises the flat on AirBnB but then has to resort to looking for a real job.
Matt is 25, has cerebral palsy and can only speak via an app on his iPad. Everyone who cares about Matt knows that this isn't the defining thing about him. He is funny and clever and ‘up for stuff’ - partly because he is keen to show that there's nothing he can't do, but also because, if he's honest, he's aware that he's less likely than other people to get the blame.
In this second series, Matt still shares a flat with his best mate, Jess. He is still in love with her but, much as she likes him, she is still not in love with him. She does however, fancy Matt’s rubbish carer, Bob, who is even more lazy and useless at most things than she is. Bob is willing and treats Matt like a real person. Over the last year or so the three of them have been through a lot together - well a lot of drinking and hangovers anyway.
Ability is the semi-autobiographical co-creation of the 2018 Britain’s Got Talent winner, Lee Ridley, otherwise known as Lost Voice Guy. Like his sitcom creation, Lee has cerebral palsy and can only speak via an app.
The series is set in Newcastle and many of the cast last played together as children in Biker’s Grove.
Katherine Jakeways, the co-creator and co-writer of Ability, is a multi-award nominated writer.

SUN 13:00 Midwinter Break by Bernard MacLaverty (Omnibus) (b091w089)
Episode 1
Bernard MacLaverty's first novel in sixteen years is a profound examination of human love, loss and faith.
A retired couple, Stella and Gerry Gilmore, fly from their home in Glasgow to Amsterdam for a long weekend: a holiday to refresh the senses, to do some sightseeing, to take stock. Gerry, once an architect, is a heavy drinker who is set in his ways. Stella is tired of his lifestyle, worried about their marriage and angry at his constant undermining of her religious faith. Their relationship seems safe, easy, familiar but over the course of a few days we discover the deep uncertainties that exist between them.
The novel has been described by Colm Toibin as: "...a work of extraordinary emotional precision and sympathy, about coming to terms - to an honest reckoning - with love and the loss of love, with memory and pain... This is a novel of great ambition by an artist at the height of his powers."

SUN 15:30 Highway 61: Fifty Years On (b06gtk2l)
Andy Kershaw re-examines the Bob Dylan album that changed popular music and his life.
Beginning with the resounding hit of a snare drum, Like A Rolling Stone starts Bob Dylan’s first fully electrified album, Highway 61 Revisited.
When he first heard the song in his mother’s car, Bruce Springsteen said it was “like somebody kicked open the door to your mind.” The album represents the birth of rock music, as opposed to the pop or beat music that preceded its release.
It sounds as subversive now as it did in 1965.
Besides revolutionising popular music, the album transformed the life of broadcaster Andy Kershaw. For him, nothing would be the same after Highway 61.
Andy travels to America to meet the surviving musicians and hear the extraordinary stories behind the recording sessions.
Dylan was only 24 years old when he walked into Columbia Studio A in New York City to record the album in June 1965. For a masterpiece record, it is all the more remarkable that almost no preparation, and absolutely no rehearsal, went into it.
Al Kooper, who was brought in as an observer, tells how he mistakenly and fortunately found himself playing the organ on Like A Rolling Stone, discovering the song’s melody on the spot.
Bassist Harvey Brooks talks about the patience that was required to work with the unorthodox Dylan. Legendary Nashville musician Charlie McCoy describes how he was accidentally brought in to play the memorable Spanish-sounding guitar on Desolation Row.
And Keith Richards provides a surprising take on Highway 61’s legacy.
Producer: Colin McNulty

A Bad Thing
On the island of Gont, Tenar saves a remarkable young girl from certain death. She also makes a dangerous enemy.
Ursula Le Guin's enduring fantasy saga starring Nina Wadia.
Published between 1968 and 2001, the five novels and short story collection of Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea cycle (A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore, Tehanu, The Other Wind and Tales from Earthsea) are re-told across 12 episodes. In the first series, the first three novels were re-told, and series two takes in Tehanu, The Other Wind and the short story Dragonfly.
As a girl, Tenar, was taken from her home and family on the island of Atuan to become Arha, the Priestess Ever Reborn, guardian of the ominous Tombs of Atuan. Deep within the Tombs, Ged and Tenar met and became unlikely allies, escaped from Atuan, and brought peace to the troubled archipelago. Now in her late middle age, widowed and with grown up children, Tenar runs a farm on the island of Gont. She has not seen Ged for many years.
Ged was born on Gont, with innate magical talent and a reckless nature. He trained in wizardry on the island Roke, where he released a terrible shadow into the world and then risked his life to restore the balance. He grew to become Archmage on Roke and the greatest wizard on all of Earthsea. When the evil wizard Cob attempted to cheat death and live forever, Ged found him and closed the breach between life and death. In doing so, he lost his powers of magic.
Set on a vast archipelago of islands, where magic is a central part of life, they tell the stories of Tenar and Ged.

MON 14:30 The Ancient Novel (b00d45vl)
Tibor Fischer goes in search of the ancient novel to discover they aren't as dusty as the manuscripts on which they're written.
Two thousand years before Hollywood, Greek and Latin novelists were writing stories that read like film scripts, others like a Mills and Boon romance and others still like religious mystery texts worthy of Dan Brown's Da Vinci code. They incorporate the twists of a soap opera, bawdy humour and magical episodes in way that is strikingly modern; and their influence on world literature is vast - as Cervantes, Goethe, Shakespeare and Racine (amongst others) testify.
At the International Conference on the Ancient Novel, in Lisbon, Tibor Fischer speaks to leading academics about this area of fiction very few people know about. He finds love, happiness and tragedy at the end and shows that although our names have changed, human nature has remained the same.

The record producer Joe Boyd and founder member of Fairport Convention Simon Nicol remember Sandy and her music. We speak to musicians who have covered the song, including folk legend Judy Collins and the singer Rufus Wainwright, about what the song means to them. And we hear from people whose lives have been touched by the song, including the singer-songwriter Ren Harvieu, who suffered a back break in a freak accident and found strength in the song during her recovery.
And neuroscientist and best-selling author David Eagleman explains why the years seem to fly past ever more quickly as we grow older.

THU 14:30 Sleeve Notes (b00htmzr)
Once a cherished gateway into a musical world - the album sleeve note has been diminished by the digitalisation of music.
It's been reduced to eye-wateringly small print by the CD case and dispensed with entirely by many of those who download their music from the internet. Music writer Laura Barton, who makes her sleeve note debut this year, explains her love of the sleeve note.
She looks at how the sleeve note can be a fierce declaration of intent from the artist, as epitomised by Johnny Cash who in 1968 wrote the sleeve notes for his legendary album, 'Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison' and went on to win the Grammy for Best Album Notes. Some musicians feel that they've said all that they want to say in their music. For them the sleeve note is something to be avoided. For others, including Jarvis Cocker, it's a chance to have a quiet word with their fans.
In America, sleeve notes, or liner notes as they call them, have their own award category at the Grammys. Dan Morgenstern has won more of these awards, seven to date, than anyone else. In this programme he shares his experience of the sleeve note. The poet Simon Armitage, has long felt that the sleeve note is an underused space. He has always wanted more from them. Last year he got a chance to create the kind of sleeve note he'd like to read when Paul Weller commissioned him to write the sleeve notes for his latest album. Armitage talks about what it's like to set words to an album. And for musician Adrian John Moffat, the sleeve note can be an intrinsic part of the whole album
The British music industry, not normally shy of giving awards, is strangely silent when it comes to recognising the work that goes into music CD's textual accompaniment. Laura Barton says the industry should be silent no longer. The Americans have been celebrating the sleeve note since 1963 - in fact it was two Brits who won the first Grammy award in this category - and it's now time that our industry showed that the words really can say something about the music.

Catherine de Medici nominated by Helen Lewis
Journalist Helen Lewis rehabilitates the reputation of the ‘Black Queen’ of France, Catherine de Medici. Helen is joined by Dr Estelle Paranque, history lecturer at the New College of Humanities and author of a new book on the relationship between Catherine and Elizabeth I.
Catherine’s life is a remarkable story of female resilience in the face of adversity. Born and immediately orphaned in Florence, Catherine’s Medici name meant she was married off to the French King’s second son. When she arrived in France, she was shunned. Her new husband was already completely in love with another far older, more beautiful woman and showed little interest in her. No one expected her to come to the throne. But, following a series of unfortunate deaths, Catherine would go on to become one of the most powerful women in Europe – Queen regent, and mother to three kings across decades of a volatile period in French history.
Helen became fascinated by her aged ten when she realised with a kind of horror that had she been a medieval princess she was the right age to be shipped off to a strange land to marry some duke she’d never met. Helen Lewis is associate editor at the New Statesman. She argues that Catherine was a savvy political operator, and that her reputation as ‘the serpent of Paris’ was largely due to the fact she was a female in power at a very difficult time. A fascinating insight into a major character little known over here.

FRI 07:30 Alexei Sayle's Strangers on a Train (m0019r7w)
Series 1
Manchester to Bournemouth
Author, actor and comedy icon, Alexei Sayle continues his travels across the country by rail.
In each programme in the series, Alexei embarks on a rail journey, taking a chance on who he might meet and inviting them to have a conversation with him. In this episode, he travels from Manchester to Bournemouth and meets Moira who, as a dedicated Manchester City fan, has sky blue hair, sky blue clothes and even a sky blue house. He also talks to Jean who has been to visit a lifelong friend who worked alongside her as a psychiatric nurse, Steven and Simon who are both accountants but spend their leisure time travelling the world together to go to top music gigs, and rail enthusiast and veteran record producer Pete Waterman on one of his thousands of trips on the west coast line.

FRI 22:30 John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme (b01m171v)
Edinburgh 2012
John Finnemore presents a special edition of his sketch show from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
His first series was described as "sparklingly clever" by The Daily Telegraph and "one of the most consistently funny sketch shows for quite some time" by The Guardian.
It featured Winnie the Pooh coming to terms with his abusive relationship with honey; how The Archers sounds to people who don't listen to the Archers, and Jekyll and Hyde's tricky housekeeping arrangements.
This special won't feature any of those things, but that's ok, because it will feature other things, and they'll be funny too.
Written by and starring John Finnemore.
