Now vindicated by Constance's confession, Jack Whicher's investigations become immortalised by the great crime novelists of the day.
Meanwhile, Constance's brother, William, becomes a celebrated scientist in Australia, and Constance, by contrast, ends up serving every day of her 20-year sentence.
On her release, she joins her brother in Australia, where she nurses in a lepers' colony, her past hidden from those around her. Only in 1928, with the arrival of an anonymous letter from Sydney, do the real events at Road Hill House back in 1860 finally come to light...

SAT 02:15 The Invention of Murder by Judith Flanders (b00xf9t2)
5. New Technology
Over the course of the 19th century, murder - in reality a rarity - became ubiquitous: transformed into novels, into broadsides and ballads, into theatre and melodrama.
Judith Flanders explores this fascination with deadly violence by relating some of the century's most gripping and gruesome cases and the ways in which they were commercially exploited.
The public imagination was particularly stirred when new technology was used to bring criminals to justice.
The final episode looks at one such case in which an enterprising railway clerk used the electric telegraph to send a description of a suspected murderer ahead of the train he was travelling on, so that the suspect could be met by police at his journey's end.
And, bringing us right up to the final years of the century, how the funeral of an acclaimed actor - and murder victim - was captured on film for posterity.
Written by Judith Flanders.
Concluded by Robert Glenister.
Abridged by David Jackson Young.
Producer: Kirsteen Cameron

SAT 02:30 The Kampala Dream House (b06086dq)
Sarah Taylor visits this remarkable children's home in Kampala, Uganda.
Amidst the slums of Kampala, MLISADA is a success story. (Music, life skills and arts for destitution alleviation.)
It's a children's home set up and run by former street kids who learned to play brass instruments. 12 years on, it cares for 90 children, teaches them music and acrobatics and they are safe from the perils of street life.
Former pupils like euphonium player, Franke, have gone on to be teachers within the wider school communities of Kampala. It's supported by keen brass players from around the world – including BA pilot and trumpet player, Jim Trott who took star trumpet players Alison Balsom and Guy Barker out there last January to run music workshops with the pupils.
Sarah talks to Alison about how her involvement with the work of Brass for Africa has influenced her approach to performing on concert platforms around the world.
Most importantly, if you get to live in the Dream House, as it's known by the kids, you've got a chance of a future. A future where you can learn to be a teacher, or simply access a better school and then go on to get a better job because you've got the bedrock of living at MLISADA.
And you'll be a great trumpet player too!

SAT 14:00 Tim Key's Suspended Sentence (b0128pyh)
Truths universally acknowledged. Clocks striking 13. Bests and worsts of times. A truly great opening line can make a novel iconic. But what makes these famous first sentences sing to us?
Comedian and poet Tim Key is on the case!
After chasing down the meaning of Nikolai Gogol's enigmatic short story "The Overcoat", Tim tries to sleuth out what makes a great literary opening line with the help of author Joe Dunthorne, comedian Mark Watson, and literary critics Maureen Freely and John Sutherland.
You see, Tim's desperate to write his first novel - it's in him, just waiting, waiting to be unleashed. If only he could think of a good beginning with the ultimate opening line...
Tim also tries to galvanise his imagination - taking a spin of one of the world's strangest literary board games...
The pressure's on, as we hear a roll-call of some of the finest and most famous first lines in publishing history - from Dickens to Dostoevsky to uh, Dan Brown.
Overwhelmed with information, we also hear a crash course on what not to do - as Tim visits Knebworth House, ancestral pile of a man whose most famous first sentence is legendary for all the wrong reasons: Edward Bulwer-Lytton, author of the infamous "It was a dark and stormy night..."
Finally it's time to try out Tim's sentence of the unsuspecting public, as he visits the award-winning Brick Lane Book Club for a focus group...before in the final moments, he unleashes that killer first sentence on the world...(so then Tim: what comes next?).

It was a Victorian murder case that gripped the nation.
One summer's night in 1860 an unimaginably gruesome killing takes place in a remote Georgian country house. The household reverberates with shock, not least because it seems the murderer is still among them.
Called to the scene is Jack Whicher of Scotland Yard, the most celebrated detective of his day, whose methods go on to influence the writing of Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens, and Arthur Conan-Doyle.
With only an inept local police force to help him, he faces an unenviable task - to solve a case in which all the grieving family are suspects.

When it comes to wormholes and time travel, many science fiction stories have married solid science and successful storytelling, as Jennifer Oullette describes, but others really have defied the laws of physics. Jim also reveals why some quantum physicists now think that wormholes could be everywhere. But don't expect to jump back to 1955 any time soon.

Mixtape 2 The Wandering Soul
Radiolab is a Peabody-award-winning show about curiosity. Where sound illuminates ideas, and the boundaries blur between science, philosophy, and the human experience.
Radiolab Mixtape, a special 4 part series featuring the impact of the cassette tape
Radiolab Mixtape 2 The Wandering Soul: an exploration of the Vietnam War and the ghosts it left behind haunting survivors today.
As the Vietnam war dragged on, the US military began desperately searching for any vulnerability in their North Vietnamese enemy. In 1964, they found it. It was an old Vietnamese folktale involving a ghost, eternal damnation and fear - a tailor made weaponisable myth. And so, armed with tape recorders and microphones, the military set out to win the war by bringing this ghost story to life.
Today, the story of these efforts and their ghosts that still haunt people today.
Radiolab Mixtape is reported, produced, scored and sound designed by Simon Adler.
This episode was produced by Annie McEwen, with original music by Annie. Original reporting was contributed by Trung Dung Vo and Nguyễn Vân Hà.

Between the Ears - Deliverance
Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Between the Ears: Deliverance.
Poet Lemn Sissay collaborates with sound artists Francesca Panetta and Lucy Greenwell to create a new radio poem around the audio diaries of five women in their final days of pregnancy.
Armed with audio recorders Diptee, Olya, Lynda, Sally and Nikki tape their journey: from shopping trips for disposable knickers and maternity towels, to the moment they wonder whether it's started, whether this is it... to the peak of their labours. Deliverance bravely bares all from pregnancy to birth, and Lemn's dialogue with the women reveals how, through the process, not only is a new child born but a new woman.
Lemn was without his birth family until he was 21. Since then he can count on two hands the number of times he's met his mother. He realizes that the nine months he spent in her womb are the only time they were truly connected. Yet only his mother has the memory of it.
Pregnancy's ordinary, yet mysterious. The inner workings of a pregnant woman's mind and body are veiled, private. Yet five women nearing childbirth from as far afield as Russia, Bangladesh and Manchester reveal what many are too fearful to admit to.
We hear Nikki, a surrogate mother determined not to bond with her baby. Sally weeps quietly in fear at
4am; Olya, just 25, considers which country to bring her child up in. And Lynda worries about losing the bond with her toddler Joe, as she reads to him in bed for the last time before the new baby arrives.
Produced by Francesca Panetta and Lucy Greenwell.
Technical production by Peregrine Andrews.

SUN 13:00 Lou Reed: A Life (Omnibus) (b09h3x49)
Born in Brooklyn in 1942, Lou Reed moved with his middle-class Jewish family to Long Island when he was a young boy.
A rebellious teenager, he discovered R&B and rock and roll and began playing in bands early on. He also began experimenting with drugs and sex, leading his parents to take a drastic decision that Lou never forgave them for.
At Syracuse University, he came under the influence of the poet Delmore Schwartz, who encouraged him to take writing seriously and served as a role model for Lou’s bohemian ambitions.
When he moved to New York City, Lou took a song-writing job with the budget label Pickwick Records, and met avant-garde musician John Cale.
With guitarist Sterling Morrison and drummer Maureen Tucker they formed the Velvet Underground, whose first paid gig was a now legendary appearance at a high school dance where they played three songs and by all accounts caused half the audience to flee for the exit.
The Velvet Underground is formed.

Episode 1
Contemporary drama from Iran. A writer must cheat the censor to publish his love story.
In order for his book to receive a publishing permit, the writer must convince Mr Petrovich, the all-powerful censor at the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, that it will not provoke sin in the mind of the reader.
His characters, Sara and Dara, meet at a riot and are obliged to hide their encounters from both their families and the regime's Campaign Against Social Corruption, the feared citizen-guardians of Islamic morality. Gender separation is rigorously enforced and illicit passion punished so the lovers exercise their creativity to meet in secret amid the bustling streets of Tehran, in an empty cinema and a hospital A&E unit. Discovery would mean imprisonment, or even death.
Yet writing freely of their encounters puts the writer in as much peril as his own fictional lovers in this Farsi "Fahrenheit 451".

Episode 4
Comedy by Katherine Jakeways about a chaotic but loving family. Starring Philip Glenister, Samantha Spiro, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Prasanna Puwanarajah, Katie Redford and Steven Brandon.
There’s an awkward atmosphere in Vicky and Rav’s house, as Joe (Glenister) and Donna (Spiro) sort through the boxes in the garage and divide up the last of their belongings, remnants left over from their failed marriage. As they talk about old times, Vicky (Edwards) and Rav (Puwanarajah) are upstairs redecorating their spare room, and talking about the future.
Meanwhile, Lisa (Redford) and Uncle Bob (Brandon) are on tea-cooking duties. Bob can handle it, but for Lisa, it’s genuinely the challenge of a lifetime.
So: Joe and Donna have a chat in a garage, Vicky and Rav paint a bedroom wall, and Lisa and Uncle Bob cook some baked beans. Needless to say, events quickly spiral out of control.

Censoring an Iranian Love Story
Episode 2
Contemporary drama from Iran. A writer must cheat the censor to publish his love story.
In order for his book to receive a publishing permit, the writer must convince Mr Petrovich, the all-powerful censor at the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, that it will not provoke sin in the mind of the reader.
His characters, Sara and Dara, meet at a riot and are obliged to hide their encounters from both their families and the regime’s Campaign Against Social Corruption, the feared citizen-guardians of Islamic morality.
To win Sara’s love, Dara now faces an unsuspected rival and a dangerous neighbour.

Soho!
The singer Suggs returns to London's Soho, where he spent much of his unconventional childhood and where his jazz singer mother still lives.
He was introduced to the delights of the Colony Club as a six-year-old, and as a musician he continued to haunt the district.
Recording on location and mining the BBC archive, Suggs investigates how this unique community, complete with red-light district and village school, functions today, and whether it is still, or indeed ever was, a source of inspiration or merely a creative vacuum.
For decades, Soho was regarded as Britain's capital of sleaze and vice, but also a place where artists, writers, musicians and actors came to drink and philosophise. Tales of the area and its inhabitants abound, from painter Francis Bacon and George Melly at Muriel Belcher's infamous Colony Club to Jeffrey Bernard and Keith Waterhouse at the Coach and Horses and Dylan Thomas at The French House.
Soho was the birthplace of British pop, with the skifflers, jazzers and early rock 'n' rollers all making their names in the coffee bars of the 1950s. It was also the home of refugees of every type, including political dissidents, foreigners and homosexuals, from Casanova to Karl Marx, and Quentin Crisp to George Melly.
Yet in the 1950s, a new phrase was coined: 'Soho-itis'. It was said that if you enter Soho you will never get any work done, and you will never, ever leave. Many books, poems, songs and indeed careers were washed away with drink, but some artists, musicians and writers did survive the late nights, the fights and the booze, and took great inspiration from the place.

TUE 14:30 The Fishwives’ Tale (b05qfj1c)
It is the most dangerous peacetime job a man can do. And for the wives, mothers and daughters who lose their loved ones to the sea, rather than to war, the burden is no less to bear.
In 2008, Jane Dolby’s husband Colin went missing when his fishing trawler was caught in a freak storm. The boat was finally located and lifted from the bottom of the sea - but Colin was not found.
Aside from the emotional pain, there are practical complications. The law says that a death certificate cannot be issued without a body - which means no life insurance and no widowed parents' allowance, despite having four young children to bring up.
So in 2012, united by a common bond of understanding the dangers of fishing and a desire to raise money for The Fishermen’s Mission who help so many fishing families in hardship, Jane formed the Fishwives' Choir with women from all over the UK who have lost husbands, fathers, brothers and sons to the sea.
Although the choir was only formed to create a one-off charity record, the women received so many performance requests that they decided to carry on in any way they could. Most had not sung since their school days, but we now join Jane, Laura, Leigh and Wendy as they record their debut album.
This is a tale of transforming tragedy and grief into music and hope.
Lead by Jane and over a bed of raucous laughter, The Fishwives' Tale is a heart-warming and at times hilarious tale of women overcoming grief through friendship and sea shanties - proving that, even in the darkest of times, there is still light.

Bring Him Home
Bring Him Home, from Les Miserables, is a beautiful and moving prayer-in-song that has developed meaning and identity outside the hit musical.
Taking part in the programme:
The celebrated tenor, Alfie Boe, has sung this many times in the West End and on Broadway; he discusses what the song means to him.
Herbert Kretzmer talks about the agonising process of writing the lyrics.
The Greater Manchester Police Male Voice Choir recorded a version especially for the programme; one of their members describes singing Bring Him Home at the funeral of PC Dave Phillips in November 2015.
The original Cosette, from Les Miserables, Rebecca Caine now sings this song - written for a male voice - regularly as part of international recitals.
And for Becky Douglas it will forever be a reminder of her daughter whose death inspired the foundation of a leprosy charity.
Jeremy Summerly, Director of Music at St Peter's College, Oxford plays through the piece and describes why it moves us emotionally.

Series 1
Episode 1
Super-sharp everywoman Angela Barnes tackles life and love and, with the help of an audience, packs herself a fantasy coffin.
Remembering her larger-than-life father - a gregarious character, sex shop manager, naturist, and a big fan of caravans and pranks - Angela celebrates his 'carpe diem' approach to life, and his motto "You Can't Take It With You".
When her father died very suddenly in 2008, Angela and her family proved him wrong and stuffed his coffin with sentimental keepsakes for his final journey.
In this series, Angela does the very same thing and asks her loved ones to nominate objects that they would choose to send on with her as mementoes of their time together, which she keeps in a suitcase full of memories, acting as prompts for contemplative, heart-warming and captivating comedy.
Angela Barnes is a vivacious, critically acclaimed stand-up comic from Maidstone, Kent. After a career in health and social care, at aged 33 she decided to pursue a long held ambition and give comedy a go. Within a couple of years, Angela and her witty worldview had won the 2011 BBC New Comedy Award by a public vote, secured a weekly star slot in Channel 4's Stand Up For The Week and appeared on numerous radio and television shows including Loose Ends, The Now Show and writing credits on her beloved The News Quiz (BBC Radio 4), Russell Kane's Whistle Stop Tour (BBC Radio 2), Mock The Week (BBC 2) and Russell Howard's Good News (BBC 3).

Series 1
The Confession of Clarke Peters
Actor, comedian and broadcaster Stephen Mangan presents a comedy chat show about shame and guilt.
Each week, Stephen invites a different eminent guest into his virtual confessional box to make three 'confessions' to him. This is the cue for some remarkable storytelling, and surprising insights.
This week, Clarke Peters, famous for his roles as Lester Freamon in The Wire and Albert Lambreaux in Treme, surprises with his stories of youthful indiscretions, hidden loot and embarrassing his brother on the Borscht Belt.
We’re used to hearing celebrity interviews where stars are persuaded to show off about their achievements and talk about their proudest moments. Stephen is not interested in that. He doesn’t want to know what his guests are proud of, he wants to know what they’re ashamed of. That’s surely the way to find out what really makes a person tick. Stephen and his guest reflect with empathy and humour on why we get embarrassed, where our shame thresholds should be, and the value of guilt.
Other series guests include Marian Keyes, Cariad Lloyd, Joan Bakewell, Suzi Ruffell and Phil Wang.

WED 14:30 Happy Days - The Children of the Stones (b01n1rbx)
Writer and comedian Stewart Lee explores the ground breaking television series Children of the Stones and examines its special place in the memories of those children who watched it on its initial transmission in a state of excitement and terror.
The programme includes contributions from series co-creator Jeremy Burnham, singer Julian Cope, cast members and fans.
In 1977 HTV launched the revolutionary children's television drama telling the story of an astrophysicist and his son who arrive in the village of Milbury to study ancient stones. The residents greet each other with the phrase "Happy day", and the community is held in a strange captivity by the psychic forces generated by the circle of giant Neolithic stones which surround it.
Filmed at Avebury in Wiltshire, it is a strangely atmospheric production with the baleful, discordant wailing voices of the incidental music increasing the tension.
The story, involving a temporal paradox and issues of individuality and community assimilation thematically challenged the after-school audience, which included Stewart Lee.
In this documentary Lee returns to Avebury to discuss the serial's impact, examine its influence on him and explore the history and secrets of the ancient stones.
1970s kids may have dived behind the sofa during Doctor Who, but it was Children of the Stones that gave them nightmares.
The series is frequently cited by those who remember it as one of the scariest things they saw as children.

WED 23:15 Rosie Jones: Box Ticker (m000h7yg)
Disability
Stand-up comedy from triple-threat Rosie Jones. She’s disabled, gay and northern - so, of course, she has her own BBC show.
However, she doesn't feel a great example of any of these communities and she’s tired of being asked to speak on their behalf. This show checks what’s really inside the boxes and throws most of it out.
Rosie looks at disability with help from comedian Jamie MacDonald. Jamie ticks the 'blind box', most of the time, and shares some of the absurd situations he comes up against due to people's awkwardness around him.
Recorded in a live comedy club, prepare to be shocked and disappointed by Rosie’s lack of respect for your expectations.
A Dabster production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in April 2020.
WED 23:30 John Peel's Shed (b018fljy)
In 2002, John Osborne won a competition on John Peel's Radio One show. His prize was a box of records that took eight years to listen to. This is an ode to radio, those records and anyone who's ever sought solace in the wireless.
A story about one man's love for radio, how it allows you to escape into another world. Based on his book Radio Head, this is about what happened next: a show about the pleasure of having your own personal project. The story is about passion, obsession with music and about legacy; trying to do something special with such a rare, eclectic box of records.
Produced by John Pocock
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in December 2011.

Round two: The World
The problem with quizzes is that the same questions keep coming up, like “What’s the largest land mammal?”*. So the more quizzes you do the more predictable they get.
Luckily, here comes quizzer, comedian and Rose d’Or winner Paul Sinha with his new series, Paul Sinha’s Perfect Pub Quiz. In each episode he will invite the audience to tell him their favourite quiz questions, before offering up not just different and surprising questions, but also the fascinating stories behind the answers.
It’s facts, jokes, stories and puns – just the way you like them.
This week's show is full of questions for the World Round of the quiz. Paul asks about the first woman to circumnavigate the globe, the world's longest river, and the US state which has Boston as its capital. The audience, meanwhile, contribute questions about countries on the equator, wordless national anthems, and matching flags.

THU 14:30 Beirut's House of Barakat (b04wwcny)
On the intersection of Damascus and Independence streets in the Lebanese capital Beirut, there's an elegant house, pockmarked by bullet holes, that goes by a number of names - the Barakat house, the yellow house, or Beit Beirut. This building has stood witness to the experiences of Beirut over the last century. It contains the stories of those who lived in it before the war and the snipers who occupied it during the war.
The house has been saved from demolition by the dogged efforts of an architect, Mona el-Hallak. In a city where old buildings are continuously knocked down to make way for new flats, Mona has championed this building and preserved it for future generations.
Rebecca Lloyd-Evans went to meet Mona in the house, and this programme is a document of her experience there. The plan for the museum is to encourage Beirutis to come together and share their histories of the city.
Mona hopes that this could show the way towards a permanent peace in Lebanon, but – as Rebecca finds out – people's stories diverge and conflict and finding unity is not an easy mission.

Patricia Greene on Bess of Hardwick
Patricia Greene, the actress who plays Jill Archer, makes the case for Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury, or Bess of Hardwick as she's more commonly known.
Like her heroine, Patricia was born in Derby and was aware of the nearby grand stately home Hardwick Hall. 'More glass than wall' was the local saying; as the key feature of this 1590s house was the exuberant use of this rare material. Only recently did she discover that the initials 'ES', which are blatantly carved on the turrets, stood for a woman - Elizabeth Shrewsbury.
And so began Patricia Greene's admiration and obsession. Who was this woman born in Tudor times, when women had few if any rights at all? Bess ended up becoming the richest woman in the land after Queen Elizabeth I, but she was portrayed by some as a 'cold hearted shrew' who only became rich by marrying four husbands, Patricia's job is to defend her hero.
The expert witness is Dr Nigel Wright, the House & Collections Manager with National Trust at Hardwick Estate.
The presenter is Matthew Parris

FRI 14:30 Mr Cole Comes to Kensington (b03m40zs)
Christopher Frayling explores the legacy of Henry Cole, dynamic founder of London's Victoria and Albert Museum and the vibrant design partnership with the Royal College of Art.
At the time of the Great Exhibition in 1851, British design was fast losing out to the Continent. But by 1871, the South Kensington Museum (now the V and A) with its pioneering public restaurant, free admission days and evening openings, had become a blueprint for design museums worldwide.
The man behind this remarkable achievement was Henry Cole, inventor of the commercial Christmas card, who had helped introduce the Penny Post. A bustling, rotund figure with a mane of white hair, 'Old King' Cole transformed what had been a teaching collection of plaster casts into a world-leading museum of art and design. But despite the patronage of Prince Albert, it proved an arduous journey, often fraught with opposition from a suspicious Establishment.
Christopher Frayling is a former Rector of the Royal College of Art and former V and A Trustee.
Contributors include British fashion designer and RCA graduate Zandra Rhodes and former V and A Director Sir Roy Strong.
