Series 2
West Side Story
"And The Academy Awards Goes to.... West Side Story".
Continuing his series on Oscar-winning films, Paul Gambaccini turns his attention to one that tackled tough issues through the medium of the musical.
With a young fresh cast - Natalie Wood in her first adult role, Rita Moreno sweeping everyone else off the dancefloor, and a relatively inexperienced but dazzling array of support actors - the movie sizzles with colour, drama, the outstanding choreography of Jerome Robbins, the music of Leonard Bernstein and the lyrics of a young Stephen Sondheim.
Who could tell that behind the scenes there were arguments, voice dubbings and overruns, plus issues over racial casting and 'blacking up'? What emerged from a tumultuous production was a triumph.
Producer: Sara Jane Hall
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2009.

Episode 5
Greer Kadetsky is a shy college student in Connecticut when she meets Faith Frank, a dazzlingly persuasive and charismatic activist who has been a pillar of the women's movement for decades. The meeting is made more resonant since she has just been the victim of a sexual assault on campus.
As Greer moves into her independent adult life Faith is to become her mentor figure, someone she looks up to and respects, until she is forced re-evaluate.
Greer has landed her dream job, working for Faith Frank's foundation. She heads out with the Loci team for drinks on a Friday night.
The Female Persuasion by Meg Wolitzer is a book written before the recent seismic shift in American politics and the advent of the #MeToo movement, but it illuminates the complexities of what it is to be a young woman coming of age in the early decades of the 21st century. As well as the relationship between Greer and her role model, the story explores how a young man copes with devastating loss and attempts to rebuild his life, and poses searching questions about feminism and the painful realities of love and loyalty.
Writing in The New York Times Review Of Books, Lena Dunham described how "the novel ...deserves to be placed on shelves alongside such ornate modern novels beginning in college as A Little Life, The Secret History and The Marriage Plot... But when all is said and done, Wolitzer is an infinitely capable creator of human identities that are as real as the type on this page, and her love of her characters shines more brightly than any agenda."

SAT 02:30 The Cult of King Tut (m0009r52)
As the largest collection of Tutankhamun's treasures to travel outside of Egypt goes on display in London, Patricia Clavin, Professor of International History at the University of Oxford, explores the cult of Egyptomania following the opening of King Tutankhamun’s Tomb in 1922.
Patricia visits the Griffith Institute in Oxford to view the original glass plate negatives of Harry Burton, who meticulously documented Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon's archaeological excavations of the tomb of Tutankhamun. She notes how Burton set up and staged his photos to make them as dramatic as possible and how these images then flashed around the world in the new mass circulation newspapers, so that "everybody could have a bit of King Tut".
At the Clothworkers' Centre in London, Patricia looks at the V&A’s stunning hand-beaded gold lamé evening jacket, made in Paris in 1923, which uses generic Egyptian motifs of birds, snakes and lotus flowers: imagery that appeared everywhere in 1920s art deco design, as well as in mass-produced consumer goods, available to all.
The four statues of the goddess Isis, who guarded Tutankhamun's canopic shrine, are notably modern-looking. Their bobbed hair and shift dresses chimed with the style of the new 1920s modern girl, embodied in the "Jazz Cleopatra", Josephine Baker. From outside Baker’s haunt, the Folies Bergère in Paris, Patricia speaks to the musicologist Martin Guerpin about how her styling as a Garçonne and her dancing of the Charleston struck people as the epitome of the liberated woman after the First World War.
When Tutankhamun’s mummy was unwrapped in 1925, he was discovered to be a boy king, whose body carried multiple injuries. Patricia talks to Roger Luckhurst about how this captured the imagination of people after the First World War, many of whom were mourning their war dead. This culture of mourning and death also fed the King Tut curse stories which flooded through the Western press at the time.
Patricia concludes that Tut-mania was as much a global project of the imagination as it was about the history of the objects themselves. It connected people to an ancient place and to one another, including the ones they had lost. Through consumption of the past they were able to re-imagine themselves in a different and possibly better world.

SAT 09:00 Inside the Music: From Score to Encore (b05nybcs)
Gavin Henderson is passionate about music. Formerly a noted trumpeter in an orchestra, he's been Director of Brighton Arts Festival, Principal of Trinity College of Music and is now Principal of the Central School of Speech and Drama in London.
In this sequence of programmes, he explores the complex creative communities that coalesce to bring a piece of music to life in a concert hall. Becoming a member of a musical ensemble has been described as "more like joining a cause than a profession". He talks to members of orchestras and ensembles to get their personal perspectives on music making. What do they feel about their own instrument? What are relations like between members of the orchestra? Or between an orchestra and a conductor?
It's a world of titanic egos, and creative humility; where the rigours of touring and performing, the frustrations of forever being the second violin and the vagaries of venue acoustics and audience responsiveness can be forgotten in a feat of collective creative expression.
Gavin throws light on some of the less known inner workings of an orchestra and the sometimes intuitive relationships "behind the podium" – such as that between the Orchestral Librarian and Conductor, or piano tuner and pianist.
And he tries to understand and convey what motivates a group of individuals to act like an organism greater than the sum of its parts, bringing pleasure and, occasionally, transcendence, to performers and audience alike.

When Courtney Met Chris
Courtney Pine talks to jazz trombonist Chris Barber about his life's work and how his initiative and enthusiasm for American blues music helped provide inspiration for a new generation of British musicians.
Barber has been a professional jazz musician for almost 55 years. Along with the likes of Kenny Ball and Acker Bilk, he was an integral part of the 'trad jazz' boom in the 1950s which swept the dance halls of austere postwar Britain.
However, while others stood still, Barber set about acknowledging the huge debt he and his fellow musicians owed to the legacy of American blues musicians, and engineered tours for artists including Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Muddy Waters, and Champion Jack Dupree. These visits gave emerging players like Eric Clapton and Van Morrison a chance to see their idols, and introduced the true stars of blues to a whole new generation. Van Morrison talks about the impact that Chris made on his music and on the British music scene as a whole, and his belief that Chris' contribution should receive wider recognition.
Andy Fairweather-Low explains how rehearsing with Chris changed his whole appoach to music, and reveals the man's hidden talents as a racing driver. In a newly-discovered interview, Chris' ex wife, singer Ottilie Patterson, remembers stepping out with Big Bill Broonzy, the pride she felt in being compared to Bessie Smith and how she was chatted up by Muddy Waters, backstage in Croydon.

Humphrey Lyttelton
From Louis Armstrong to Gigli. Radio and jazz legend Humphrey shares his castaway choices with Kirsty Young.
Humphrey Lyttelton described himself as ‘blessed’ for having two careers: as a jazz trumpeter and band leader, and then as a highly popular radio host, including I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue between 1972 and 2007.
Humphrey’s favourite among the tracks he selected is ‘That’s My Home’ by Louis Armstrong. His book choice is the Collected Works of James Thurber and his luxury item is a harmonium, in order to master playing a keyboard instrument.

The Power of Love
Two questions about love and heartbreak in this episode for our Valentine's special edition.
Jessica Glasco, aged 29, wrote in to ask about the power of love and how it affects our brain.
Hannah tracks down Dr Helen Fisher, who conducted some of the first MRI studies on love by putting besotted couples into the brain scanner.
Adam talks to broadcaster Claudia Hammond, author of Emotional Rollercoaster, to find out how psychologists have grappled with the messy business of love. And we hear why a small furry vole was thought to hold the answer to the mystery of monogamy.
Our second question concerns the pain of heartbreak - why does our heart ache? Can emotional hurt cause physical pain? On call is our very own agony aunt, Irene Tracey, Prof of Pain Research.

True stories told live in the USA: Jay Allison introduces storytellers encountering the people they’ve always wanted to meet.
The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.
The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.
Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.
The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.

Mother Tongue - A Sense of Belonging
Each week the poet Daljit Nagra selects an inspiring programme from the BBC's poetry archive. This week he chooses an edition of Mother Tongue: A Sense of Belonging - the globe-trotting poetry series with Imtiaz Dharker. The poet explores exciting voices from around the world in their own languages and in translation.
Imtiaz hears poems written in Catalan, Turkish, Kurdish and Livonian – an endangered language from the Baltic coast. As she thinks about the phrase "A Sense of Belonging", she discovers how homelands and ties of the heart have inspired these three poets.
Catalan poet Manuel Forcano draws his inspiration from countries of the Middle East and North Africa. From Barcelona, he tells Imtiaz about his connection to ancient civilisations and why his poems are often charged with a heady eroticism. He reads poems from his collection Maps of Desire, translated by Anna Crowe.
Bejan Matur writes in both Turkish and Kurdish. She grew up in South East Turkey in a Kurdish Alevi family, and her almost mystical poems engage with the experience of the Kurdish people in Turkey. The English versions are read by the translator, poet Jen Hadfield courtesy of the Poetry Translation Centre. Canan Marasligil produced the literal translations from Turkish to English.
Finally, there’s Valts Ernštreits who writes poems in the Livonian language. It’s an ancient Finnic language, once widely spoken in Latvia but now classified as "critically endangered" by UNESCO. Valts talks to Imtiaz about his proud heritage and being part of possibly the smallest literature group in Europe. The English versions of his poems are read by the translator, Ryan Van Winkle.

In the 1970’s the Spanish tourist board was happy to use flamenco, the traditional dance of the south, as a way to tempt chilly northerners on to the beaches on the Costa del Sol. And it worked - giving a much needed economic boost to an ailing economy. Back home, in Brighton and Bremen alike, crumpled posters featuring swirling skirts were rescued from luggage and left in upstairs bedrooms along with a raffia donkey stuffed with dates.
Behind the swirl of skirts, however, was a dictatorship which despised the gitanos, or gypsies, who refused to give up republican beliefs, leading many into exile. A tame version of flamenco was the one delivered to foreigners – joining the clichéd image of Spain on the shelf next to the castanets.
So did real flamenco survive Franco’s dictatorship? It’s a puzzle Chris Stewart, author of the best-selling series of books about his life as a sheep-shearer in Spain, and ex-member of Genesis, sets out to unravel on the streets of Granada.
As a young man Chris left the UK to join a flamenco guitar class in Seville. He quickly realised his skills as a guitarist were lacking, but fell under the spell of Spain, and flamenco for ever, returning to live there as a farmer 27 years ago.
On a trail through the scorching white alleyways of the Albaicin, into back room bars and caves, find out how the music most powerfully identified with the gitanos, is now exported throughout the world. There are now more flamenco classes in Japan than in Spain. The music has made a come back, although gitano life is still often one of the outsider. Local prisons contain significantly high proportions of the gitanos, although the authorities allow flamenco workshops for those in jail as a basic human right, whilst families still pass down their skills from generation to generation.
Chris meets the youngest in a long line of gypsy guitarists - Juan Habichuela Nieto performing in the open air courtyard of the Alhambra; the much lauded singer Juan Pinilla; the dancer Chua Alba, who also teaches his own daughter Chloe; the grand old man of Sacramonte, Curro Albaicin; and learns the poetry of flamenco from Steven Nightingale. Drinking more red wine than a wise man should n a hot night, he listens to the wavering song of a 99 year old Juan Mesa, accompanied by Alvaro, his 19 year old accompanist, in the dust riddled guitar shop of Rafa Moreno; before bumping into the proud bohemian, the gypsy singer, Cristobal Osorio, under the stars, concluding that flamenco is indeed the 'Blues of Europe'.

Episode 6
Greer Kadetsky is a shy college student in Connecticut when she meets Faith Frank, a dazzlingly persuasive and charismatic activist who has been a pillar of the women's movement for decades. The meeting is made more resonant since she has just been the victim of a sexual assault on campus.
As Greer moves into her independent adult life Faith is to become her mentor figure, someone she looks up to and respects, until she is forced re-evaluate.
Distance and circumstance have put a strain on Greer and Cory's relationship. Looking back, Faith recalls her very first meeting with Emmett Shrader in the 1960s.
Meg Wolitzer is author of The Interestings, The Uncoupling, The Ten-Year Nap, The Position, The Wife, and Sleepwalking.

TUE 14:00 The Female Persuasion by Meg Wolitzer (b0b3cw3r)
Episode 7
Greer Kadetsky is a shy college student in Connecticut when she meets Faith Frank, a dazzlingly persuasive and charismatic activist who has been a pillar of the women's movement for decades. The meeting is made more resonant since she has just been the victim of a sexual assault on campus.
As Greer moves into her independent adult life Faith is to become her mentor figure, someone she looks up to and respects, until she is forced re-evaluate.
Faith has become a popular cultural figure and Emmett a wealthy venture capitalist, courtesy of his wife's fortune. They meet to do business.
Meg Wolitzer is author of The Interestings, The Uncoupling, The Ten-Year Nap, The Position, The Wife, and Sleepwalking.

TUE 14:30 Dr Hepcat and the Hepster's Dictionary (b04mcmnl)
In 1938, the singer and band leader Cab Calloway became the first known African American to publish a book and call it a dictionary.
His book of jive talk, Cab Calloway's Hepster's Dictionary, translated some of the lively and inventive slang being used among musicians and entertainers in New York's Harlem, for a new audience of jazz fans who weren't yet 'hep to the jive'.
Poet Lemn Sissay finds out how Calloway, famous for his hit song Minnie the Moocher, came to write the dictionary, and how it became the official reference book of jive in the New York Public Library at a time when black people in America were still highly segregated from the white mainstream.
Lemn speaks to Cab Calloway's eldest daughter Camay Murphy who remembers Harlem in the 1930s and 40s, and Cab's grandson Christopher Calloway Brooks who is a bandleader himself.
Jive grew out of older African American vernaculars which had their roots in slave plantations in the 19th century. As people came up from the southern states to the northern cities to look for work, jive developed around the world of jazz music, entertainment and night life in Harlem. It was a private 'in the know' language, a form of protection and a way to get past the authorities, but it was also fun and incredibly creative.
Some words survive, like hip, chick, groovy, dig, cool and beat. Other jive terms may no longer be in use - like collar to comprehend, pounders for policemen, or a rug cutter for a good dancer - but the words of jive remain a revealing portrait of Harlem in its heyday.

University of Sheffield
A funny and dynamic quiz show hosted by Steve Punt - this week from the University of Sheffield.
Specialist subjects including Archaeology, Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy, and Civil Engineering and the questions ranging from Blockchain and Xerostomia to Big Shaq and Slime.
Recorded on location at a different University each week, and it pits three Undergraduates against three of their Professors in an original and fresh take on an academic quiz.
The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the Highbrow and Lowbrow round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of television, sport, and quite possibly Justin Bieber. In addition, the Head-to-Head rounds see students take on their Professors in their own subjects, offering plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both sides.

TUE 18:30 Soul Music (b06pttqp)
Series 21
Mr Blue Sky
ELO's brilliantly off-beam classic, Mr Blue Sky, is explored in Soul Music.
It was released as a single in 1978, having first appeared on the ELO album 'Out of the Blue' in 1977. Written by Jeff Lynne, it was a no.6 hit in the UK, and has endured on the radio airwaves ever since.
Contributing to the programme:
Tracey Collinson whose husband, Nigel, loved the track tells of the meaning it has for her.
Musicologist, Allan Moore, discusses the anomolous use of the word 'blue': usually associated with downbeat emotions, this is a peculiar subversion of that cultural norm with the word 'blue' conjuring happiness and good weather.
Tremayne Crossley and his friend, Jo Milne, tell the extraordinary story of how Jo heard music for the first time. This track played an important role in that event.
For Dr. Sam Illingworth, Mr Blue Sky will always take him back to the low-flying research-flights he made over the wetlands, greenlands and seas of the Arctic Circle with the shadow of the BAE146 plane beneath him and clear blue skies above.
The children of King's St. Albans in Worcester sang the track that features at the end of the programme.

WED 14:30 Earth to Earth: Potted Immortality (b00lyrb6)
For thousands of years the potter's art has linked life and death: vessels which contained nourishment for the living like wine or grain, were transformed into urns, destined for the afterlife, becoming receptacles for the deceased, for their cremated ashes, for their collected bones, and for their vital organs.
For those of us left temporarily above ground, we are surrounded by urns in earthenware, porcelain and other clays. Today artists like Turner Prize winner Grayson Perry, who has also made funeral urns, now uses ceramics to tell a tale of death with works like "We Have Found the Body of Your Child." Other artists now create unique urns that contain the remains within the clay or glaze, producing dramtic effects and preserving the deceased for ever.
Ceramicist Lars Tharp takes you on a personal journey looking back and forward with Grayson Perry and using readings from Sir Thomas Browne's treatise "Urn Burial." Lars also talks to funeral directors, ceramic experts and visits the British Museum where we will uncover the urn which inspired Keats to write his poem "Ode on a Grecian Urn.

Series 2
Care
This week's Big Problem with Helen Keen is; Care
Who cares? Why do we care? If genes are selfish why is altruism attractive? Is fairness built into our brains? What is the future of empathy? What is the cost of love?
We look at how technology can help us deal with keeping an ageing population healthy, happy & independent, and why the latest Japanese nursing robot has the face of a bear. Does technology isolate us, or does it over-connect us. We look at how it can keep us linked to others & feeling 'cared about' at any age, and the vanishing luxury of solitude.
And we ask in an age when rolling global news can tell us about every awful thing under the sun, how could we care less?
As humanity faces a very big raft of very varied problems, many of them of its own making, here is a series of optimistic, scientifically literate yet comically nimble shows that offer a sweeping overview of the biggest challenges we face and the science behind them. We look at the often surprising solutions of past generations and the likely and unlikely solutions of the future and present a scrupulously researched comedy celebrating human ingenuity.

THU 14:00 The Female Persuasion by Meg Wolitzer (b0b3fl1x)
Episode 9
Greer Kadetsky is a shy college student in Connecticut when she meets Faith Frank, a dazzlingly persuasive and charismatic activist who has been a pillar of the women's movement for decades. The meeting is made more resonant since she has just been the victim of a sexual assault on campus.
As Greer moves into her independent adult life Faith is to become her mentor figure, someone she looks up to and respects, until she is forced re-evaluate.
Through his grief, Cory has had an idea for a new computer game and is introduced to an investor who may be able to make it happen.
Meg Wolitzer is author of The Interestings, The Uncoupling, The Ten-Year Nap, The Position, The Wife, and Sleepwalking.

FRI 14:00 The Female Persuasion by Meg Wolitzer (b0b3g009)
Episode 10
Greer Kadetsky is a shy college student in Connecticut when she meets Faith Frank, a dazzlingly persuasive and charismatic activist who has been a pillar of the women's movement for decades. The meeting is made more resonant since she has just been the victim of a sexual assault on campus.
As Greer moves into her independent adult life Faith is to become her mentor figure, someone she looks up to and respects, until she is forced re-evaluate.
Cory visits Greer in New York. Greer raises her voice. Meg Wolitzer's witty novel about power and influence.
Meg Wolitzer is author of The Interestings, The Uncoupling, The Ten-Year Nap, The Position, The Wife, and Sleepwalking.

Slumdog Millionaire
Somewhere between Bollywood and Hollywood, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, the low budget independent production captured the heart of the world, and 8 Oscars in 2009 .
Paul Gambaccini tells the gripping story of the little film that got lucky, talking to some of those central to its creation, from Vikas Swarup, the Indian Diplomat who wrote the original novel, co-director Loveleen Tandem, who helped persuade the studios to let the child actors speak Hindi, and Resul Pookerty, whose magical soundscape of India won him an Oscar and changed his life for ever.
It was a film which took a city, a child of the slums, and a game show – and turned it into a star-crossed romance; a film which snuck past the infamous Foreign Language category and into the mainstream Best Picture category at the 81st Academy Awards - despite at least 20% Hindi.
Winning 8 Oscars, the film had no star actors, but a cast of millions - the city of Mumbai. The real star name was Danny Boyle, a director who, according to screen writer Simon Beaufoy, discovered in Mumbai a city ‘like the inside of his head’ - vibrant, frenetic, dazzling, and full of extremes.
This was also an independent film which nearly went straight to DVD, but rose again to take Oscar after Oscar, from under the noses of studio films.
Paul Smith of Celador Productions, describes how his company, who invented the game show, “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire”, got lucky a second time - winning a Best Picture Oscar.

Episode 3
On one hand, Ben is on the trip of a lifetime to Sub-Antarctica. On the other, he's trapped in an icy hell with one other person, a dodgy internet connection and a dictaphone. Loneliness is something of a problem. His fellow travelling scientist Graham should alleviate this, but the tragi-comic fact is, they are nerdy blokes, so they can only stumble through yet another awkward exchange. Ben experiences all the highs and lows that this beautiful, but lonely place has to offer but fails miserably to communicate this to Graham. So, Ben shares his thoughts with us in the form of an audio 'log'.
Apart from his research studying the Albatross on the Island, Ben attempts to continue normal life with an earnestness and enthusiasm which is ultimately very endearing. We're with him as chats awkwardly with Graham, telephones his mother and as he tries to form a long distance relationship with a woman through Chemistry.com. In fact, we follow Ben as everything occurs to him. We also hear the pings and whirrs of machinery, the Squawks and screeches of the birds and the vast expanse outside. Oh, and ice. Lots of ice.
In this episode, Ben and Graham encounter a seal cub that's been attacked. He takes it home and carefully nurses it back to life and share the pup's progress with his mum and Dad.
