That's Edutainment!
Are the values of education and entertainment truly compatible?
Matthew Sweet asks if learning can or should be fun.
When we watch a high-end TV documentary do we learn anything? Or do we simply think we have? With lessons from the archive, this is an hour long look at the links between education and fun.
BBC Radio 4 Extra's ‘King Street Junior’ provides a historical re-enactment, while TV’s Sesame Street is an early example of edutainment that worked.
1970's adult education TV series ‘On the Move’, with a young Bob Hoskins playing a removal man who has trouble reading and writing, helped enormous numbers of people with literacy problems. It accidentally became cult viewing in the process.
The same cult status was accorded to the first late night Open University broadcasts, although the values of good TV and undergraduate teaching initially clashed, sometimes about the appropriate colour of shirts.
In his capacity as academic, Matthew talks to Dr Fern Riddell, whose PhD he supervised. Fern chose broadcasting and writing rather than lecturing or teaching as a career and she explains how injecting historical authenticity into TV dramas like Ripper Street might help us see past eras more clearly, if backed by the right research.
And, with the help of Harvard Professor of Education Meira Levinson, Matthew wonders whether Homer Simpson is an appropriate vehicle for the study of philosophy.
Meanwhile, are some of the ideals of Public Service Broadcasting changing in the digital age?
Nowadays the strictly educational programmes like OU material and schools broadcasting are no longer part of the general broadcasting landscape, meaning we're less likely to stumble upon them. Put Public Service Broadcasting into a popular search engine and you might not end up learning about the BBC mission statement, but something completely different.
A Testbed production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in July 2018.

The UK is more divided than ever, and no one seems able to agree on anything.
What does it mean to be British? To be a man? To be white or “of colour”, gay or straight, young or old, or none of the above? It seems we can’t see the woods for the trees.
What’s needed is a little outside perspective.
Enter: Phil Wang – a caustic British-Malaysian comedian who grew up on the island of Borneo. A centrist with a heart; an artist with an engineering degree.
In this pilot episode, Phil turns his attention to the British Empire - was British colonialism really one big crime?
Modern liberalism would say so, but Phil’s Dad sure misses those prompt British buses – “I wish they’d come take us over again. Maybe I’d get to work on time!”

Stephen Fry's Identity Crisis
Stephen Fry (no relation) asks Adam and Hannah to investigate the following question:
"All my life I have been mildly plagued by the fact that I have a quite appalling ability to remember faces. I cut people I should know well dead in the street, or at least fail to recognise them in a way which must often be hurtful.
At a party I can talk to someone for ten minutes and then see them again twenty later and have no idea who they are unless I’ve made an effort to fix some accessory or item of their dress in my mind. If I see them the next day in another context I’ll have no idea who they are. It’s distressing for me in as much as I hate the idea that people might think I am blanking them, or think little of them, don’t consider them significant and so forth.
I’d be very grateful if my sister-in-surname and her eximious partner Adam could investigate prosopagnosia for me and offer any hint add to as to its cause or even possible – I won’t say “cure” as I am sure it’s chronic and untreatable – but at least any interesting ways of relieving it."
Hannah and Adam call in the experts, neuroscientists Sophie Scott and Brad Duchaine. Why is it that some people struggle with prosopagnosia, whilst others never forget a face?

SUN 11:00 The Moth Radio Hour (m0014xph)
Series 12
Live From Santa Barbara - Under The Armour
True stories told live in the USA: Dame Wilburn introduces stories of being in and out of touch and the Alaskan wilderness.
The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.
The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.
Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.
The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.
First heard on PRX in 2019.

Piers the Plowman Revisited
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Piers the Plowman Revisited. It's one of the strangest, most complex and frustrating works in Middle English, so when writer Ian Sansom is tasked with coming up with a radio adaptation of William Langland's medieval dream poem 'Piers the Plowman', it presents a bit of a challenge.
His producer's solution? To lock Ian away in a Curfew Tower in the Glens of Antrim and challenge him to come up with his adaptation over the course of a weekend, after which time he'll be expected to put on a performance.
The 14th century poem - part theological allegory, part social satire - may have eluded scholars for centuries but Ian has help at hand. Aside from three poetry students from Queen's University, renowned medievalist Dr Stephen Kelly will be there to guide him on his quest for salvation.
As Ian grapples with the text written in alliterative long lines and framed in a series of dream visions, adaptation expert Brian Sibley will be just a phone call away. Then there's the members of Belfast outfit The Wireless Mystery Theatre who'll be dropping by to bring music and their own distinctive style to Ian's performance.
Who knows, it could turn out to be a dream...or it could be a nightmare.

SUN 15:30 Conjuring Halie (b01gvn23)
Cerys Matthews celebrates the life of one of her musical heroines, the great gospel singer Mahalia ("Halie") Jackson.
Jackson became one of the most influential gospel singers in the world at the height of her popularity, inspiring singers like Aretha Franklin and Mavis Staples.
But she was also one of the unsung heroes of the civil rights movement in America, described by the legendary historian and broadcaster Studs Terkel as one of the bravest people he'd ever met.
As a child she suffered illness, poverty and deprivation. The Church was her shelter. During the late 1920s, at the height of the great migration, she toured Illinois performing in churches. But it was in Chicago that she made her name and carved out a place for herself as the first professional gospel singer. She refused to sing secular music, a pledge she kept throughout her professional life. Even Louis Armstrong couldn't persuade her to sing jazz with him.
By the 1950s and 60s, touring across Europe, she was being described as "the greatest spiritual singer alive." Throughout, she remained a close friend and comrade of Martin Luther King, travelling with him to the deepest parts of the segregated south and often singing at gatherings where he spoke including at the famous march on Washington.
Cerys talks to gospel singer Vermettya Royster and to the Reverend Stanley Keeble both of whom knew and played with Mahalia.
Archive recordings feature the historian Studs Terkel talking with Mahalia in the years when they became close friends.
Featuring blues and gospel writers Val Wilmer and Viv Broughton.

Joni Mitchell Taught Me How to Feel
Music writer and broadcaster Ann Powers explores Joni Mitchell’s impact on her fans and on songwriting.
"Even the songs of hers I’ve heard a thousand times can still give me the weird feeling that she knows me personally," she says.
Ann considers what it is about her music that speaks to people in this way. And how does this emotional connectedness square with an artist who has constantly shape-shifted, who is full of contradictions? She’s a master lyricist who dislikes most poetry. Her words challenged who women were supposed to be, who they could be, and yet she bristled against feminism. And when she’s had such a powerful effect on so many listeners, why has she only had one top 20 hit?
Through excerpts from live BBC recordings from the late 1960s and 70s, and the conversations Joni Mitchell recorded in the same period with broadcaster Malka Marom, we travel across a decade of her music.
From the familiar territory of songs like Woodstock, we reach the wilder, exploratory sounds of her late 70s work, via some of her most critically acclaimed albums from earlier that decade - Blue, Court and Spark, The Hissing of Summer Lawns and Hejira.
Writers and critics Linda Grant, Sean O’Hagan, Jessica Hopper and Barney Hoskyns reflect on the rapid evolution of Joni Mitchell’s musical and lyrical approach, alongside the memories of some of those who’ve been closest to her: songwriter and former lover Graham Nash, bassist and ex-husband Larry Klein, and longstanding friend Malka Marom.
With thanks to Malka Marom and the Thomas Fisher Rare Books Library at the University of Toronto, for sharing clips of Joni Mitchell’s conversation with Malka Marom.

Hallelujah
Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' took him years to write.
It originally had as many as 80 verses. Recorded for his 'Various Positions' album, it was almost ignored when first released in 1984.
Only Bob Dylan saw its true worth and would play it live. John Cale eventually recorded a version which was heard by an obscure musician called Jeff Buckley.
The song has been covered by hundreds of artists including Rufus Wainwright, kd lang and Alexandra Burke.
We hear from those whose relationship with the song is deep and profound.
Singer Brandi Carlisle listened to it over and over again as a troubled teenager; it became a sound-track to James Talerico falling in love and Jim Kullander made a connection with the song after the death of his wife.

WED 14:30 Yellowstone Wolves (m0014yhf)
In 2005 Howard Stableford visited Yellowstone National Park in the United States to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the return of the wolf.
Having been persecuted to extinction in the early 20th century, wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone in 1995. It took many years to make it happen and even today there are many people unhappy that wolves are back in the area.
The project has been very successful and wolf numbers peaked in 2004 at 170 wolves.
While the wolves bring pleasure to the many thousands of tourists who come to the park each year to watch them, the local farmers and hunters are concerned about the wolves. With the territories of the wolf packs expanding, wolves stray beyond the boundaries of the park onto cattle pasture.
Farmers are compensated financially for wolves having killed their cattle but it has to be proved that a wolf was to blame.
The wolves mainly eat elk and thousands of elk are found in the park and outside of it. The elk are also the prey of local hunters and "outfitter" businesses, as companies offering elk hunting are called.
They feel the elk herds are being effected by the wolves and the licences they get to shoot a certain number of wolves are being reduced which they say is impacting on their income.

Everyone craves a place where their mind and body are not applied to a particular task. The nearest faraway place. Somewhere for drifting and lighting upon strange thoughts which don't have to be shooed into context, but which can be followed like balloons escaping onto the air.
Late at night, in the dark and in a bunk bed, your tired mind can wander.
This is the nearest faraway place for Patrick Marber and Peter Curran. Here they endeavour to get the heart of things in an entertainingly vague and indirect way. This is not the place for typical male banter.
From under the bed clothes, they wrestle life's challenges. This week, they discuss the ideal position for human genitals and if evolution should ever get a move on.

THU 06:30 Destination - Fire! (m000b7jm)
Series 1
1. The Reluctant Fire-Raiser
Can fire investigator Quentin Barnaby determine if a recent incident had a political motivation? Stars Robert Beatty.
A 1962 drama series set off the well-beaten detection track. It's writer Philip Levene talked about his inspiration: "I have always been fascinated by fire......while writing two plays [Untimely Death, Weather For Murder] I was struck by the wide variety of intriguing ideas in a field that seemed (bar the obvious insurance fraud) comparatively untouched to date. Personally I have had my fill of court-room dramas, endless bodies and Private Eyes, but the puzzle of the charred remains of a burnt-out building intrigue me. The motivations of arson are numerous: greed, financial reverses destruction of evidence, revenge".
It stars noted Canadian radio, television and screen actor, Robert Beatty (1909 - 1992). Beatty shared the screen with James Mason in Odd Man Out (1947), Gregory Peck in Horatio Hornblower (1951) and Richard Burton in Where Eagles Dare (1968), as well as playing the Lester Powell's Irish private detective, Philip Odell on the BBC Light Programme from 1947 to 1961.

Series 1
The Block
Michael and Maxine Wilson and their daughters, Lola and Cat have resolved to live a more ethical life. Millions of people try every day to make 'good' choices and do the 'right thing'. It's hard. Most of us live with hypocrisy and failure all the time but keep on trying. The Wilsons are trying about 20% harder and learning to live with about 19% more failure.
In the last episode in the series Max and Mike attempt to get their heads around the sensitive subject of S.E.X. and technology. Their teenage daughter Cat's latest relationship seems to be mainly conducted through the phone and they fear she doesn't have a clue on the risks attached in sharing intimate images. However, a full and frank adult conversation seems to be beyond Mike who has hang-ups of his own and Max and Mike's attempt to educate the children on the dangers of pornography on the web via a complex metaphor of Brexit and a possible desensitisation to 'David Davis' leaves Lola simply well-versed in European politics and Cat angry. Meanwhile, Max, in attempt to addressing society's obsession with technology, makes a clanging faux pas via her local library web seminars. As the usual family harmony disintegrates it looks like their annual visit to the 'Words and Curds' festival in Wales is set it be a real downer until they bump into Caitlin Moran on her way to a book signing. Is it possible that this celebrated feminist author of a number of books including 'How to be a Woman' will have the answers they crave?

Now a crumbling museum, losing money hand over fist, it struggles to stay open under its eccentric curator Peter Knight (Simon Callow). Tom Collyer (Tom Bell) tries and fails to get the museum back on track, alongside the hopelessly out of touch deputy Julian (Miles Jupp), corner-cutting gift shop manager Maureen (Jane Horrocks), put-upon education officer Emma (Louise Ford), and enthusiastic but dim-witted caretaker Alan (Pearce Quigley).
This week, after their latest madcap scheme proves a disaster, Tom decides that Peter and Julian should no longer be in charge of the finances. He soon discovers that each staff member thinks they are most suited for the role, and a local pub quiz becomes the arena to decide who is best and smartest at Plum House. The competition reignites old tensions and turns the team on each other. But Tom is distracted by his feelings for Emma.

Every Tuesday night during Michaelmas term at Durham University, the debating chamber at the Durham Union Society is filled with student volunteers training a group of participants brought in by the homeless charity Cyrenians.
The hope is that through debating the group can hone their skills of speaking, and gain confidence and the ability to deal better with job interviews and challenging environments. They've got eight weeks, then there's a black tie dinner and the participants will be debating in front of an audience.
The participants have had a tough history, and for many of them the idea of public speaking fills them with terror. The students 'ooze confidence' and it's up to them to impart some of that on their trainees, and hope that in the long term it might make a difference to their lives.
Can it? Edi Stark finds out.

FRI 14:30 Old Photographs Fever - The Search for China's Pictured Past (b01kkntb)
'Old Photos Fever' is sweeping China, where people are encountering their photographic history for the first time, piecing together a past destroyed in Mao's Cultural Revolution.
Sales of books and magazines filled with historical photographs have rocketed. China's turbulent history in the twentieth century meant that archives of all kinds were destroyed. People also destroyed their own - now dangerously bourgeois - family albums. Nearly a century of photographic history was erased.
The photographs that do survive were mostly taken by foreigners, living in or visiting China, who took them out of the country to safety. Professor Robert Bickers at the University of Bristol is leading the search to collect and digitise these photographs in order to restore a historical vision of China which is unfamiliar and fascinating to its citizens now.
One of the jewels in the collection is the work of Fu Bingchang, a senior Chinese diplomat, whose access to the elite of Chinese society in the first half of the twentieth century and whose talent as a photographer make for a unique and beautiful set of images.
The Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 prompted Chinese politicians to pursure an ambitious policy of historical education, to counteract a perceived lack of knowledge in young people about China's past. New museums are now huge tourist attractions in China and the desire for photographs has arisen from this resurgence of interest in the nation's history.
This fascinating documentary brings a new and surprising insight into China's past and present.

FRI 22:30 Mark Watson's Live Address to the Nation (b016lgkl)
Strength
Mark Watson reignites his quest to improve the world, nimbly assisted by Tim Key and Tom Basden.
As broadcast live in November 2011 - Mark invites the audience join in via tweets and messages to work out how we can all make the world a better place.
Asking the big questions crucial to our understanding of ourselves and society - Mark kicks off with a look at "Strength".
Strength comes in many forms. We all need to be strong sometimes in life, whether we're dealing with an emotional fall-out or carrying a really heavy dog to the vet's. Some have inner strength, like people who survive divorce etc; some have outer strength, like guys who pull buses with their teeth in competitions.
But can strength be - ironically - a weakness? Strength can have its downsides. Our fondness for displays of strength has led to disastrous episodes like wars breaking out and 'Gladiators' being brought back. Mr Strong, in the Mr Men books, got strong by eating a barn full of eggs, but must have suffered terrible side-effects. How can we be strong, but remain human?
Mark Watson is a multi-award winning comedian, including the inaugural If.Comedy Panel Prize 2006. He is assisted by Tim Key, winner of Edinburgh Comedy Awards 2009 and Tom Basden who won the If.Comedy Award for Best Newcomer 2007.
Producer: Lianne Coop.
