SAT 02:30 Birth of an Orchestra (b069rv9w)
Alan Bennett, former members of the Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra (1947-55) and students of the new Yorkshire Young Sinfonia discuss Yorkshire orchestras past, present and future.
In 2014 on BBC Radio 4, Alan Bennett recalled his boyhood visits to the Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra. In Death of an Orchestra, he was joined by supporters and former members in telling the YSO's history, from 1947 to its sad demise in 1955.
As he listened to that programme, David Taylor was coincidentally in the process of creating a new youth orchestra - the Yorkshire Young Sinfonia - and Alan Bennett's story of the YSO gave his project a new sense of purpose: “To create the musicians of tomorrow, providing a springboard to a career in the arts, and stimulate the arts in Yorkshire”.
Birth of an Orchestra follows the students of the YYS as they prepare for their inaugural concert – just 60 years on from the YSO’s last performance. The young players talk about their musical backgrounds and ambitions, and hear advice from three former members of the YSO with long and distinguished orchestral careers - violinist Stan Smith, harpist Mair Roberts and cellist Betty Wood, a founder member of the YSO at the age of 19.
The programme explores Yorkshire’s musical heritage. Alan Bennett remembers an embarrassing visit to the Leeds Triennial Festival, Leeds City Organist Simon Lindley outlines the origins of music-making in the county and Bernard Atha - former Lord Mayor of Leeds - recalls hearing John McCormack sing there in the 1930s.

SAT 03:00 Das Kapital (b0b1hwwj)
Sarah Woods’ dramatisation of Karl Marx’s iconic work imagines what he would make of our 21st Century global economy. With present day themes weaved in, it begins with 'the commodity'.
"The commodity is, in the first place, an object outside us, a thing that by its properties satisfies human needs of whatever kind."
This is the story of the ultimate commodity: The smartphone. In 2018, at least half of the adult population owned one - estimated to rise to 70 per cent by 2020 - that's 6.1 billion people.
It's a story that takes us from the cobalt mines of Africa to the tech firms of the UK. And what Marx's analysis reveals, is that the objects we each carry in our pockets aren't in fact phones at all.
Marx is a figure who divides opinion, but Das Kapital is one of the most influential books of the modern world. It informed and inspired a political movement that shaped the 20th Century and remains a key text in the study of modern economics.
It's one of the few books that can claim to have changed the world.

Cornelia Parker on Marcel Duchamp
Marcel Duchamp - the father of conceptual art, and responsible for that famously provocative urinal signed 'R Mutt, 1917' - is the great life choice of fellow artist Cornelia Parker.
She explains to Matthew Parris why he's influenced not only her work but that of so many other artists since his death in 1968. As an art student in the 1970s she recalls the attraction of Duchamp's 'readymades', such as a bicycle wheel or suspended wine bottle rack - manufactured items that the artist selected and modified, antidotes to what he dismissed as conventional 'retinal art'.
They are joined by Dawn Ades, Professor of the History of Art at the Royal Academy. She recalls an occasion when she saw him completely absorbed in a game of chess in a café in the Spanish seaside town of Cadaqués, whilst visiting Salvador Dali. They also discuss Duchamp's intriguing female alter ego, Rrose Selavy (Eros, c'est la vie or "physical love is the life") Man Ray's photographs of whom featured in some Surrealist exhibitions.
We hear how Duchamp let the world know that he'd given up being in artist in favour of devoting himself to chess whilst still in his 30s. He played the game at a high level, representing France at international tournaments, whilst covertly continuing his art work.
Cornelia Parker explains that his works spoke not just to the Pop Art and Op Art movements of the 1960s, but more broadly to American artists like Bruce Nauman and the composer John Cage, and whose influence can be seen today in the work of, for example, fellow English artist, Rachel Whiteread.

SAT 09:00 Hilarious Histories – What’s So Funny About the Past? (m0002mnk)
Public Historian Greg Jenner embarks on an Arthurian quest to find out how comedy writers make history funny.
Greg is the Historical Consultant to all eight series of CBBC’s Emmy and multiple BAFTA award-winning Horrible Histories. In short he is both a nerd and a comedy nerd.
Over three hours, the range of comedy from the BBC archives includes:
* Pauline Pepys’ Dowry starring David Mitchell, Olivia Colman, Katherine Parkinson and Sharon Horgan.
* Austentatious (Cariad Lloyd, Rachel Parris, Andrew Hunter-Murray)
* Stand-up from Eddie Izzard.
And, that’s not all; we’ve also excavated audio of Monty Python discussing the controversy surrounding The Holy Grail and Life of Brian, plus a choice selection of shiny trinkets from Horrible Histories.
To help Greg grapple with the big questions over accuracy, ethics, and whether Mr Darcy wore underpants, he’s chatting to comedian-turned-Classicist Natalie Haynes, Horrible Histories Head Writer Ben Ward, Austentatious improvisers Cariad Lloyd and Andrew Hunter-Murray, and Stephen Fry, who apparently was in a show called Blackadder.

Tomorrow's World, Today
Many of us watched the iconic BBC TV series Tomorrow's World, as it made predictions about the future in which we now live.
Was it correct in its assumptions and predictions?
Former presenter James Burke takes a journey through the archive, and explores how the series fared.
Tomorrow's World began in the "White Heat" of the 1960s - as science and technology began to promise a future previously unimaginable.
From the first orbits of the moon, to the first heart transplant; from the nuclear debates of 20th century, to the economic failure of Concorde; from robots to the internet - Tomorrow's World reported on it all. How did the show do it? And did it get it right?
In 2015, James Burke - a Tomorrow’s World reporter from 1966 to 1972 – looked at how the show dealt with huge technological advances and assesses our ability to see what's around the corner.

SUN 06:00 Man of Iron: Thomas Telford and the Building of Britain (Omnibus) (b08dbspl)
"There was no better moment to be born, if you wanted to change the world by building things, than Britain in the second half of the 18th century."
Julian Glover's first full modern biography of Thomas Telford: a shepherd's son who changed the world with his revolutionary engineering.
Telford's life spanned a fascinating time in British history: born in post-Union, post-Enlightenment Scotland, Telford forged a successful career in London and then across the country working on projects that set the stage for the Industrial Revolution.
Born in the Scottish Borders in 1757, Telford's beginnings were not auspicious. But he gained a fine education in his village school and, in that egalitarian time and place, mixed there with children from all different classes. Indeed, contacts from his schooldays played a key role in helping him to become established as one of Britain's leading engineers.
A stonemason turned architect turned engineer Telford built churches, harbours, canals, docks and the famously vertiginous Pontcysyllte aqueduct in Wales. He invented the modern road and created the backbone of our national road network.
His bridges are some of the most dramatic and beautiful ever built, most of all the Menai Bridge, which spans the dangerous channel between the mainland and Anglesey.
Astonishingly, gratifyingly, almost everything he built remains in use today...

Kylie Minogue
From ABBA to Stevie Wonder.
Pop star Kylie Minogue shares her castaway choices. with Kirsty Young.
With seven number ones and 10,000,000 singles sold in the UK, she is the third-biggest selling female artist in Britain and has sold around 70,000,000 records worldwide.
Born in Melbourne in 1968, Kylie and her sister Dannii began their careers as child actors on Australian television. At 17, Kylie landed the role of Charlene Mitchell in the soap opera Neighbours and her on-screen wedding to Jason Donovan’s character Scott Robinson was watched by twenty million people in the UK alone.
Her recording career began after she was spotted singing at a charity event in 1987. Within months she had released a cover version of “Locomotion” which became the biggest-selling Australian single of the decade. Following the single's success, her first hit with record producers Stock, Aitken and Waterman was “I Should Be So Lucky": her debut album sold seven million copies.
At the age of 21, a romance with INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence led to a change in her image. In 2000, inspired by 1970s disco and assisted by gold hot pants, her single “Spinning Around” became her first British number one for a decade. She also sang to an estimated global audience of 3.7 billion at the closing ceremony of the Sydney Olympics.
In May 2005 she was diagnosed with breast cancer: following treatment she resumed the tour 18 months later.

The Periodic Problem
"Will the periodic table ever be complete?" asks Philip Craven on Twitter.
In 2016 four new chemical elements were given the official stamp of approval - nihonium, moscovium, tennessine, and oganesson. And 2019 was named by the UN as the International Year of the Periodic Table.
In this episode, Hannah and Adam dive into the test tubes of history to hear why the first element was discovered in boiled urine, why chips don't explode and how a cancelled trip to a cheese factory resulted in the creation of the periodic table.
We'll hear from Dawn Shaughnessy from Lawrence Livermore National Lab, part of the team that discovered the latest 'superheavy' elements. Science writer Philip Ball shows Adam around Humphry Davy's lab equipment at the Royal Institution of Great Britain and Jim Al-Khalili explains why scientists are eager to reach the Island of Stability.

Borderliners
Daljit Nagra selects 'Borderliners' featuring a poem by Hannah Lowe which explores the mysteries surrounding the lives of her Chinese Jamaican family.
The term 'borderliner' was once a derogatory term for having mixed heritage. "Between 'bi-racial' and 'bounty,'" Hannah writes, "I find the label 'borderliner' which the dictionary tells me, means uncertain or debatable." Using this term and its troubling history as the basis for a new poetic form, the poem reflects on borders and borderlines, both physical and psychological.
Drawing on half-memories and imagined images from her family history, Hannah Lowe re-creates moments from the lives of her Jamaican Chinese father who came to the UK by ship in 1947 and became a professional gambler, her Chinese grandfather who moved to Jamaica as a legacy of indentured labour in the Caribbean, and most elusive of all the mystery surrounding the life of her Jamaican grandmother of whom she has only one photograph.

SUN 15:30 Asian Weddings: Something Gold, Nothing Borrowed, Everything New (b01h2c3n)
Big fat gypsy weddings might have hit the headlines, but the traditional British Asian wedding has always been big.
Often including several separate ceremonies and events spread over a week or more, the cost of the average Asian wedding in the UK is frequently well over £30,000.
With the significance of marriage or 'shaadi' being huge in south Asian culture, weddings are a serious business. From the lavish designer outfits and the elaborate cakes to the grand stages where the bride and groom sit on their thrones, complete with a lighting and sound system to rival a TV talent show, this is an industry worth a reported £300 million a year in the UK alone.
Yasmeen Khan explores the glamorous world of British Asian weddings.
She takes in an Asian wedding exhibition in the UK, meeting the clothes designers, wedding planners, toastmasters, food suppliers, chefs, videographers and 'yellow gold' jewellers making their fortunes as the second and third generation tie the knot, all of them keen to help the families show off their wealth. She learns about the different cultural aspects of a Muslim, Sikh and Hindu wedding.
She visits a couple's big day and explore the meaning behind cultural traditions, such as the confiscating of the groom's shoes by the bride's sisters and cousins - finding out what he must do to get them back.
Yasmin also delves into the politics of the guest list at an Asian wedding, many of which are huge affairs with hundreds and sometimes thousands of guests! And she discovers just how much family relations are tested as an increasing number of couples pay for something that has traditionally been paid for by the bride's family.

MON 14:00 Born Lippy by Jo Brand (m0001d8g)
1. Family
Jo Brand turns advice giver in a typically irreverent guide to life. She says she's messed up enough times to feel confident she has no wisdom to offer anyone. But who cares? She's going to do it anyway.
Once upon a (very, very) long time ago Jo Brand was what you might describe as "a nice little girl". Of course, that was before the values of cynicism, misogyny and the societal expectation that Jo would be thin, feminine and demure sent her off down Arsey Avenue.
The plot thickened when, due to a complicated fusion of hormones, horrible family dynamics and a no-good boyfriend they hated, Jo ended up leaving home at 16.
Now she's considerably further along life's inevitable journey and, in this memoir, she reveals a side of herself that we don’t normally hear - the things she wishes she'd known and the things she hopes for the future. As you’d expect, she pulls no punches.
In today’s episode, Jo begins with the wisdom (or otherwise) of giving advice, and guidance on how to survive your family. From her own battlefield experiences, she suggests the best attitude for family holidays and Christmas. Sometimes, it’s just a case of lowering your expectations.

Could the PM Have a Brummie Accent?
BBC Political Correspondent, Chris Mason, examines the changing accents of politics and politics of accents, with help from politicians, language experts and an impersonator.
The programme examines the ways that stereotypes and prejudices can be loaded onto accents, how the voting public responds to different voices, and what politicians can do and have done about it all.
With the help of the archive, the former Labour leader Neil Kinnock and former Conservative minister Edwina Currie reflect on the political soundtrack of their lifetimes. How have their voices, those of their contemporaries and the sound of the national political conversation changed?
How is it possible and when it is sensible to change your accent? Chris is joined by Steve Nallon, who impersonated Margaret Thatcher on Spitting Image, to listen back to her as a new backbencher and later as Prime Minister.
And what about the sound of political reporting? The archive allows the former Today Programme presenter Jack Di Manio to give Chris - a son of the Yorkshire dales - a lesson in speaking 'properly'.
So are we really becoming more open minded about this aspect of political communication? The programme hears from two MPs who say they still struggle to be understood in the Commons today.

TUE 14:00 Born Lippy by Jo Brand (m0001f03)
2. Love and Friendship
Today, Jo turns unflinchingly to love and friendship. This includes the story of an unsuitable teenage boyfriend and the appalling poetry he inspired, as well as Jo’s five golden rules for keeping friends (even if they do say you look like Brian Blessed in drag).
Written and read by Jo Brand
Abridged and produced by Pippa Vaughan

Episode 2
The boiler's broken so it's freezing. Jak has found a soulmate in Ryan-the-heating-engineer (or Brian-the-plumber) who is making the job last days. Skye can't leave Dexter at home because Ryan/Brian keeps leaving the door open and she's worried Dex will run down the street and get in some randomer's car. It's happened before. Skye is used to having Dexter in tow, but now she wants to play guitar with Scarlett. Just the two of them.
Skye is sixteen and Dexter seven. They live in Gainsborough in Lincolnshire, where standing out as different doesn't always end well. Now Skye's attempting to build her own life, but she can't leave Dex behind. Skye narrates, inviting us into her ordinary, extraordinary life: a dysfunctional world. She has always had to look after Dex because their alcoholic Mum, Jak, can't.
Skye and Dexter return in this heart-breaking, heart-warming story, which won the 2016 Audio Drama Award for Best Serial and a Special Commendation in Best Actress category for Sydney Wade as Skye in 2019.
Skye and Dexter's story is developed through close collaboration with BBC Children in Need and one of the projects they help fund, SAYiT, a Sheffield-based charity that provides practical support around LGBT+ life, sexual health, HIV and mental wellbeing. It is also inspired by ongoing voluntary work in Gainsborough.

Bath Spa University
A lively and funny quiz show, hosted by Steve Punt, where a team of three University students take on a team of three of their professors.
Coming this week from Bath Spa University, the specialist subjects are Creative Music Technology, Creative Writing and Physical and Environmental Geography, with questions ranging from VAT rates and model railways all the way to Meet The Kardashians and the Ku Klux Klan - via Mo Farah and Dame Nellie Melba.
The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds, and the 'Highbrow and Lowbrow' round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of television, film, and One Direction.
The resulting show is funny, fresh, and not a little bit surprising, with a truly varied range of scores, friendly rivalry, and moments where students wished they had more than just glanced at that reading list.
The host Steve Punt, although best known as a satirist on The Now Show, is also someone who delights in all facets of knowledge, not just in the Humanities (his educational background) but in the sciences as well. He has made a number of documentaries for Radio 4, on subjects as varied as "The Poet Unwound - The History Of The Spleen" and "Getting The Gongs" (an investigation into awards ceremonies), as well as a comedy for Radio 4's Big Bang Day set in the Large Hadron Collider, called "The Genuine Particle".

In today’s episode, Jo draws on her nursing experiences and walking from Hull to Liverpool to give guidance on the vital life skill of being kind. She applauds Billy Bragg for his motivational music and describes the moment he "almost" made her cry on telly.

Abridged and produced by Pippa Vaughan
A Loftus Media production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in December 2018.

WED 14:30 The Sound of Space (b050bwpp)
The previously silent world of outer space is changing. In this audio tour around the Universe, Dr Lucie Green explores the sounds of space.
Some sounds have been recorded by microphones on-board interplanetary spacecraft. Others have been detected by telescopes and sped up until their frequency is tuned to our ears. The rest are sonified X-rays, space plasma or radio waves that reveal tantalising secrets about the universe that our eyes cannot see.
Everyone can recall the sound of the singing comet - a symphony created using measurements from the Rosetta mission. But many other sounds have been created from space data, from lightning on Jupiter to vibrations inside the Sun. From spinning pulsars to black holes and gamma ray bursts, outside our Solar System space becomes even stranger.
Joining Lucie Green on this sonic journey through space are:
Prof Tim O'Brien (Associate Director of Jodrell Bank Observatory),
Honor Harger (Executive Director of the ArtScience museum in Singapore) and
Dr Andrew Pontzen (Cosmology Research Group, University College London)
with archive from Dame Jocelyn Bell-Burnell.

Louise Richardson on Daniel O'Connell
Academic Louise Richardson chooses the hero of Catholic emancipation in 1829, Daniel O'Connell. With Matthew Parris. From 2017.
On a field outside Dublin, Daniel O'Connell met and shot a former royal marine in a duel. John d'Esterre had been outraged when O'Connell, the later hero of Catholic emancipation, described the mainly Protestant Dublin corporation as a 'beggarly corporation'. O'Connell later claimed that he had practised with two pistols every week, knowing that one day he would be challenged to a duel.
Nominating O'Connell is the vice chancellor of Oxford and terrorism expert Louise Richardson. It's not the violence of the duel that appeals, but O'Connell's revolutionary way of marshalling huge support for his causes, which were always conducted in a remarkably non-violent way. "The altar of liberty totters when it is cemented only with blood," O'Connell said. He took his seat in Westminster in 1830 and thereafter fought for the abolition of slavery and the repeal of the union, a cause in which he failed. Patrick Geoghegan, O'Connell's biographer and special advisor to the new Irish prime minister, adds the colour to a truly extraordinary and important life.

Gelbetia
A satirical adventure story from Bill Dare.
Brian Gulliver, a seasoned presenter of travel documentaries, finds himself in a hospital's secure unit after claiming to have experienced a succession of bizarre adventures. This week we hear about his travels in Gelbetia, a country run by doctors.
The series has attracted an excellent cast led by Neil Pearson and award winning star of the RSC's current season, Mariah Gale. Cast includes fantastic actors Tamsin Greig, John Standing, Paul Bhattacharjee, Christopher Douglas, Catherine Shepherd, Vicky Pepperdine, Phil Cornwell, Antonia Campbell Hughes, Jo Bobin and Katherine Jakeways.
For years Bill Dare wanted to create a satire about different worlds exploring Kipling's idea that we travel, 'not just to explore civilizations, but to better understand our own'. But science fiction and space ships never interested him, so he put the idea on ice. Then Brian Gulliver arrived and meant that our hero could be lost in a fictional world without the need for any sci-fi.
Gulliver's Travels is the only book Bill Dare read at university. His father, Peter Jones, narrated a similarly peripatetic radio series: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

FRI 14:00 Born Lippy by Jo Brand (m0001g8p)
5. Being Different
Today, Jo concludes with her singular perspective on "being different". Whether it was her rebellious teenage years or moving from a nursing career to the stand-up comedy circuit, Jo knows that it’s hard to find out who and what you are - and also in gaining equality for both sexes. But she’s hopeful that, as long as we’re on the same page (and that page isn’t 3), there’s scope for great strides forward.
Written and read by Jo Brand
Abridged and produced by Pippa Vaughan
A Loftus Media production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in December 2018.
FRI 14:15 D for Dexter (m000bcdr)

Episode 5
Skye has had enough of everything. But just as she's about to crack, she finds Scarlett at the house in Sidney Street. The boiler is fixed and there's even hot water.
Skye and Dexter return in this heart-breaking, heart-warming story, which won the 2016 Audio Drama Award for Best Serial and a Special Commendation in Best Actress category for Sydney Wade as Skye in 2019.
Dex has special needs caused by Foetal Alcohol Syndrome.
Skye and Dexter's story is developed through close collaboration with BBC Children in Need and projects they fund. This year we've worked with SAYiT, a Sheffield-based charity that provides practical support around LGBT+ life, sexual health, HIV and mental wellbeing. The story is also inspired by research on the ground in Gainsborough.

FRI 14:30 Eddie Goes Country (b01p2w7d)
Eddie Mair has harboured a secret. But no more - it's a lifelong love of Country music. He wants to know why these three chord melodramas call him and many of his fellow Celts.
While, to the casual listener, Country is often regarded as a twang of twee tunes and lachrymose lyrics for the permanently melancholic, Eddie suggests that it is actually a 'complex state of mind'. He considers the accessible merits of the music and discovers the roots of Country.
Returning to Scotland, Eddie attends the Celtic Connections Music Festival in Glasgow. Here he compares notes, likes and dislikes with fellow broadcaster and Country aficionado Ricky Ross, along with singers Eleanor McEvoy and Dick Gaughan.
On hand to explain the 18th century Scots/Irish exodus to America and Canada is emigration historian Professor James Hunter. And providing a master class on the Celtic musical lineage detected in contemporary Country Music is musicologist Dr. Katherine Campbell from Edinburgh University.
And for the first time, Eddie will reveal where his musical devotion took root. It began on the Sabbath in a yellow Triumph PI. That almost sounds like the beginning of a Country song.
Produced by Jo Coombs and Stewart Henderson.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in November 2012.
