SAT 02:30 The Georgians: Restraint, Revolution and Reform (b04brjnr)
2. Reform
Amanda Foreman concludes her examination of the political impact of the Georgian era – looking at politics on the ground.
Considering the structures of British life that created both control and freedom, Amanda asks why Britain experienced political evolution, not revolution.
In 1832 the British political elite voluntarily chose to weaken its own power for the first and only time in history. This was the result of the Reform Act, which added 130 new seats to Parliament.
While riot and rebellion was rife and often met with violent backlash from those in power, Amanda argues that the Georgian elites placed emphasis on freedom.
Meeting radicals in Newcastle and evangelical conservatives in the Mendip hills, Amanda examines how the ordinary disenfranchised man and woman increasingly invested in politics and civic life, transforming how the elected related to the people.
Amanda examines the formative years of British politics when the most important structures of British life we value and recognise today were established – and all in the shadow of revolution. It paints a picture of the Georgian legacy, one where decadence and scandal takes a backseat to proto-democracy and social reform.

Her remarkable finds came before Charles Darwin's theory of evolution and she believed them at first to be giant crocodiles, but as scientists began flocking to Lyme Regis to buy her specimens, she started to educate herself in geology, becoming an authority on fossils.
However, as with many of the subjects of Great Lives, she was never fully credited for her efforts and faded from public consciousness after her death.

Boy, Oh Boy, He's Going Down
Sean Street examines those moments where Radio forgets itself, when laughter, alcohol or sheer emotion well up.
Traditionally the wireless has been somewhat formal, but occasionally reporters have been overwhelmed by what they're witnessing, contributors so passionate in argument and commentators overcome by mirth - or drink - that the conventions are dropped.
Then communication comes pure, direct and unselfconscious: a Battle of Britain dogfight sounds like sport, sport like war, a naval fleet becomes fairyland, the author of a fairytale about rabbits attacks another guest.
Hear the moments when Radio reveals far more than what is said.
Producer: Julian May
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in January 2000.
SAT 14:00 The Penny Dreadfuls (b012f5qv)
Revolution
The French Revolution was one of the most far-reaching social and political upheavals in modern history.
It spanned 10 years, involving the execution of the King, collapse of monarchy and slaughter of thousands at the guillotine.
Comedy trio The Penny Dreadfuls attempt to tell the epic story of the Revolution in one hour, with jokes.
Starring Richard E Grant and Sally Hawkins.
Maximilien Robespierre was the dictatorial architect of the Reign of Terror, who sent thousands to their death. Marie-Therese was the 16 year old daughter of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI.
Marie-Therese was incarcerated for three years by the revolutionaries. When she was locked up her father, mother, aunt and little brother were also with her.
After her father was executed, the rest of the family were moved to another part of the tower and Marie-Therese was kept in solitary confinement.
It's recorded that Robespierre visited Marie-Therese at one point in the tower but there's no historical record of that conversation. This play is that conversation.

Confrontations
True stories told live in the USA: Catherine Burns introduces stories of war, face-offs, and confronting the demons within.
The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.
The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.
Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.
The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.

SUN 13:00 Shark Drunk by Morten Stroksnes (Omnibus) (b08z8sy9)
The Lofoten archipelago, just North of the Arctic Circle, is a place of unsurpassed beauty—the skyline spikes with dramatic peaks; the radiant greens and purples of the Northern Lights follow summers where the sun never sets. It’s a place of small villages, where the art of fishing, though evolving, is still practised in traditional ways.
Beneath the great depths surrounding these islands lurks the infamous Greenland shark. Shark Drunk is the true story of two friends, the author and the artist Hugo Aasjord, as they embark on a wild pursuit of the famed creature—all from a tiny rubber boat.

SUN 15:30 The Beat Hotel (b01p0sb1)
Think of American writers in Paris and the chances are the first people to come to mind are the Lost Generation of the 1920s - Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Stein and friends.
But a period every bit as significant in the development of American letters and the culture more broadly is often overlooked.
Professor Andrew Hussey tells the story of how a dirty, run-down hotel in the medieval heart of Paris became in the late 1950s and early 1960s a bohemian mecca, attracting some of the most important figures of the Beat Generation.
And not only did those individuals live there, they also thrived among the more liberal social attitudes than they'd grown up with in America, creating some of their most important work. Allen Ginsberg wrote much of Kaddish, William Burroughs completed Naked Lunch, Gregory Corso rote BOMB; it was here that the famous cut-up technique so important to Burroughs and so influential on modern culture was invented by Bryon Gysin, and also the place where the Dream Machine - a means of inducing drug free hallucinations - was developed by Burroughs' lover Ian Sommerville.
Andrew also shows that the Beats were much more engaged with their French surroundings than has previously been thought, meeting many of the most important European artists of the day and witnessing the frequent violence that the Algerian War brought with it to the streets in their immediate vicinity.
He will make clear that the Beat movement - so often identified as strictly American in its focus - was in fact passionately internationalist and a key influence in global avant-garde political aesthetics.

SUN 16:00 George Bernard Shaw - Press Cuttings (b06crcr1)
Arthur Lowe stars as General Mitchener in an adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's Press Cuttings.
Written in 1909, Shaw pokes fun at the suffragettes' British campaign for votes for women. General Mitchener (Lowe) is a veteran of the North West Frontier, but how is he going to cope with a suffragette found chained outside to a door scraper - who turns out to be the Prime Minister in disguise, dressed in women's clothing?
But Michener has a plan: "The Suffragettes are a very small body; but they are numerous enough to be troublesome - even dangerous - when they are all concentrated in one place.... but by making a two-mile radius and pushing them beyond it, you scatter their attack over a circular line 12 miles long. Just what Wellington would have done."
Co-starring Joan Sanderson as Mrs Banger and Gerald Cross as Mr Balsquith.
Adapted by Jack Willis and produced by David H Godfrey.

SUN 22:30 Paul Sinha's Citizenship Test (b037vlck)
Episode 1
Paul Sinha is proudly British. He also loves a quiz. So you would have thought that the UK Citizenship Test, which newcomers to this country must pass to become citizens, would have been right up his street. But the questions in the 2012 and 2013 Home Office guides seem either bizarrely easy - "Where is Welsh most widely spoken?" - or infuriatingly vague - "What happened in the First World War?"
So Paul has created his own test, to better reflect the things that aspiring migrants should understand before they can call themselves British. In episode one he deals with the history syllabus, looking at what we know about the most important legal document in our history; the Patron Saints of the Home Nations; provides a guide to our twenty most important cities; and points out a historical error in the official guide. He also tests the studio audience on their knowledge, with those that answer incorrectly being deported.
The series intertwines the sort of comedy Paul has become known for on The Now Show, The News Quiz, and Fighting Talk, as well as his own Radio 4 shows The Sinha Test and The Sinha Games, and the command of facts and figures he demonstrates on the ITV quiz show The Chase.
Written and performed by Paul Sinha.

Series 1
A New Perspective
After treatment for ovarian and breast cancer Chippy, is mad Jill is sad and Terri is definitely dangerous to know! The road back after cancer treatment can be tricky and full of obstacles.
Two middle aged women and their younger friend seek to regain their zest for life and love by learning to dance at Bad Salsa, the club where everyone knows your name but no-one knows your prognosis!
Depictions of people with cancer on TV and radio too often follow a standard format; there is the diagnosis, the depression the chemo, then the false recovery followed by the tragic death.
Written by Kay Stonham, Bad Salsa tries to paint a picture at once more hopeful and more in line with survival rates which have improved immensely over the past 20 years.
For many, 'living with cancer' is now their day to day challenge. Our characters have finished their treatment and are in the process of finding their way back to normal life or at least finding a "new normal." Everyday challenges must go on like boring marriages, distracting crushes, troublesome children, difficult workmates and infuriating parents. But their brush with mortality gives them a new perspective.
So do they preserve their pre-cancer status quo or in Terri's words, to say "sod it all" and "go for it!"
Follow the women as they embrace the world of salsa whilst they adjust to life after cancer.

TUE 07:30 Jayde Adams: Hometown Glory (m0011lfk)
Episode 2
After over a decade in London, comedian Jayde Adams is returning to her hometown of Bristol. Why? It’s cheaper. But also because of reasons that are much deeper than that, and which she told Radio 4 would probably take two half-hour episodes to explain.
Over the course of this mini series, Jayde is going to be asking what ‘feeling at home’ really means; why we leave home; and why some of us, at least, feel the draw to go back.
Not that Jayde’s story isn’t interesting enough on its own - girl lives in same house for eighteen years, moves to London, moves back again - Jayde’s also spoken to Dawn French, Victoria Scone, Keala Settle and Sophie Willan about their own experiences of home; where they’ve made home; and how it’s made them.

Collar the Lot
Actor Tom Conti explores the story of Italian internment in Britain during the Second World War.
On June 10th 1940, Mussolini declared war on Britain and France. Overnight, as a result, the thousands of Italians living in Britain were declared enemies, considered a potential threat. Winston Churchill ordered the authorities to 'collar the lot' of so-called 'enemy aliens' and over four thousand Italians were rounded up and imprisoned.
Most were shopkeepers, hairdressers, ice cream sellers and respectable citizens at the heart of their communities. Many had been in Britain all their lives.
We hear from some of the very few still alive, who were taken from families, jobs and homes to makeshift camps across the UK.
Tom Conti's own father was an Italian who had made a life in Scotland. He was married to a Scottish woman and ran a successful business in ladies' hairdressing. The day after Italy declared war he was taken from his home, and interned on the Isle of Man. Tom visits the island to discover which camp his father was kept in, and what conditions were like for the many thousands of men who were kept behind barbed wire during the war.
Alfonso Conti narrowly avoided being put on board the cruise liner the Arandora Star, which had been requisitioned for war duties and was bound for Newfoundland carrying internees. It was hit by a torpedo just off the Irish coast and sank within twenty minutes.
With archive interviews and testimony from the last Italian survivor, Tom will tell the story of the ship's tragic sinking, in which nearly 500 Italian civilians lost their lives, and lift the lid on this overlooked episode in British history.

Strange Fruit
"Southern trees bear a strange fruit, blood on the leaves and blood at the root..." Billie Holiday's famous song expresses the horror and anguish of those communities subjected to a campaign of lynching in the American South. Soul Music hears the stories of people whose relatives were lynched by white racists and of the various forms of grief, anger and reconciliation that have followed. These include the cousin of teenager Emmett Till, whose killing in 1955 for whistling at a white woman, added powerful impetus to the civil rights movement.
Despite its association with the deep south, the song was actually composed in 1930's New York by a Jewish schoolteacher, Abel Meeropol. Meeropol adopted the children of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg after they were executed in 1953 as Soviet spies. One of those children, Robert, talks of his adopted father's humanity and his belief that the Rosenberg's were killed in a 'state sanctioned lynching by the American government'. For him, Strange Fruit is a comforting reminder of his adopted father's passionate belief in justice and compassion.

The son of a black panther, Tupac Shakur, trained as an actor, posed as a street thug and became a best selling rapper. He continues to be mythologised, revered and highlighted like no other. He was shot and killed 18 years ago, yet he is still the third biggest selling hip hop artist.
A restless revolutionary he led a conflicted life, causing moral outrage in one verse and capturing the voice of the disenfranchised in another. He continues to inspire the disenfranchised around the world and has even been chosen by the Vatican, as someone who 'aimed to reach the heart of good minded people.'
He carried the conflict between community struggle and personal gain. He wrote the feminist elegy "Brenda's Got a Baby" and the abusive "Wonda Why They Call U Bitch."
His music is still the most requested on UK prison radio. Exploring the the complexity of Tupac's life and the contending identities that defined him, Al will ask what is it about Tupac's life that still resonates?

FRI 14:30 Blind Date with Don Camillo (b04009c2)
Peter White goes in search of one of his childhood's favourite comic heroes, the buffoonish figure of Don Camillo. Whilst at the National Blind School, Peter lapped up the braille books that described the antics of this angry Italian Catholic priest who was always pitted against Peppone, the Communist mayor.
Peter discovers that the author Giovannino Guareschi's comic creations provide a fascinating road map to the bitter rivalries and huge political instability of post-war Italy. This was a time when the battle-scarred country was recovering from 20 years of Mussolini's fascism, from Nazi occupation, and the Allied campaign to seize the country. The internationally popular Don Camillo books are a snapshot of the early Cold War years when the Communist Party was riding high, and entirely at odds with the conservatism of the Catholic church.
Meeting Guareschi's descendants, Italian satirists today, a publisher and academics, Peter discovers that the short stories he so enjoyed as a teenager unlock a passionate and pivotal time in Italy's history. Arrested and imprisoned by three different successive regimes, first by Mussolini, then made a POW by the Nazis, only to fall foul of the post-war Christian Democrat government, we'll hear that Guareschi continued to hone his satire, always using humour to poke fun at authority, in whatever shape or form it presented itself. He certainly knew how to make life hard for himself, but nearly 50 years after his death Guareschi's characters live on: the Don Camillo films remain a staple of Italian television. But, Peter asks, do the antics and rivalries of Don Camillo and Peppone still speak to us today, and if so, what do they tell us?

Birmingham
Dominic Arkwright and guests Adrian Goldberg, Shazia Mirza and Luke Bainbridge discuss Birmingham; its flaws and its fabulousness.
According to a recent survey, the majority of the population believe that Manchester is the UK's second city and not Birmingham. Lord Digby Jones added further fuel to that debate when he suggested earlier this year that Manchester has a more legitimate claim to that crown. But is there anything to be gained from being classified as second? Is it a title that either cities want?
Brummies Adrian Goldberg and Shazia Mirza and Mancunian Luke Bainbridge join Dominic Arkwright to discuss why coolness is the one adjective that has eluded the city of a thousand trades. Blighted by dialectic prejudice and the stereotypes borne of Crossroads and the like, Birmingham is about to embark on another architectural city revamp. Is Birmingham happy with itself?
