Dee Caffari has solo circumnavigated the globe, braving icebergs in the Southern Ocean along the way: "We surf down huge waves on the edge of control at breakneck speeds - any collision would be the end of the race. Rescue is often days away and our closest chance of survival is a fellow competitor."

SAT 02:30 Hearing Ragas (b01mf7nd)
This is violinist Professor Paul Robertson's remarkable story of the Indian ragas he heard from within a coma, and the healing effect that Sir John Tavener's music had on him in his recovery.
When Paul and John met at a conference in 2007 they discovered that they had a shared interest in near death experiences and John stated that he wanted to write a piece for Paul involving four string quartets to be called "Towards Silence". He wrote the piece and Paul started to make arrangements for its premiere.
However, John suffered a heart attack and was taken into intensive care in Switzerland. Within weeks, Paul's aorta gave way and he found himself in a London hospital in a coma. Paul had a series of horrific visions, but was occasionally comforted by the sound of a woman singing Indian ragas. Only when he came out of the coma did he realise that the music John had written for him: "Towards Silence", was based on an Indian raga.
Paul then used the practising of this piece to rehabilitate himself after the paralysing strokes he'd suffered. Paul and John are brought together for the first time to share their experiences; how they view their respective illnesses and how these episodes have changed their lives.
Including music by Sir John Tavener, a soundtrack by Simon Hall and Sanchita Pal singing Ragas.

The Date
Matt can only speak via an app. Will his carer pretend to be him for an online date?
Matt is 25. He has cerebral palsy and can only speak via an app on his iPad. Everyone who cares about Matt knows that this isn't the defining thing about him. He is funny and clever and "up for stuff" - partly because he is keen to show that there's nothing he can't do, but also because, if he's honest, he's aware that he's less likely than other people to get the blame.
Now Matt's left home for the first time and moved in to share a flat with his best mate, Jess. But when Bob (Allan Mustafa) shows up as the new carer, the fun really starts. Bob is new to the job and, although willing, domestic duties are not really his forte. He's better at selling weed and dealing in knocked off iPads.

Musicians
Tracey Thorn
Tracey Thorn, musician and writer, is best known as one half of the duo Everything but the Girl. Brought up in Brookmans Park, Hertfordshire, she bought her first guitar, a black Les Paul copy, when she was 16 and her first band was called the Stern Bobs. Shortly after, she formed her own all-female band, Marine Girls, before moving to Hull University to study English. On her first night there, she met her future husband, Ben Watt, and they went on to form Everything But the Girl. Between 1982 and 2000, they sold more than nine million records and toured Europe and America. Despite their success, Tracey did not always enjoy performing live.
At 35 she left the pop world to look after her twin girls, who were followed by her son Blake. She took about seven years out to be a full time parent, but since then she has come back to song-writing, recording music and writing: her first memoir Bedsit Disco Queen was a best seller, and she has a fortnightly column in the New Statesman.
In 2018 Tracey was presented with the outstanding contribution to music prize, at the AIM independent music awards.

Blithe Sprits: Monsters and The Essay: An Ode to John Keats
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Blithe Spirits: Monsters and An Ode to Autumn with Frances Leviston. From 2001 and 2019.
Blithe Sprits - Monsters
Monsters. Alfred Tennyson 's Kraken and John Milton's Leviathan, which he described in Paradise Lost, are well-known poetic monsters which have inspired awe among generations of readers. Joanna Pinnock investigates the importance of monsters in verse and prose and discovers that some are more familiar than our ancestors could have imagined.
Producer - Brett Westwood
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2001.
The Essay: An Ode to John Keats - Frances Leviston on Ode to Autumn [Radio 3, 9/1/2019]
1819 was a stunningly fertile year for John Keats, when he wrote five of the greatest odes in the English language and actually introduced words and phrases never heard before - "Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness.....", "Beauty is Truth, Truth Beauty....." . Five leading contemporary poets each celebrate a single ode.
3. Frances Leviston celebrates perhaps Keats' best-loved and most frequently anthologised poem, Ode to Autumn, exploring both its depiction of the bounty of autumn and its forebodings of death.
Producer - Beaty Rubens
First broadcast on BBC Radio 3 in 2019.
SUN 12:30 Ability (b0b1srpp)
Series 1
The Assessment
But he likes Matt and treats him like a real person. So, as far as Matt is concerned, Bob is here to stay.
Ability is the semi-autobiographical co-creation of Lee Ridley, otherwise known as Lost Voice Guy. Like his sitcom creation, Lee has cerebral palsy and can only speak via an app. Lost Voice Guy is - probably - the first stand up comedian to use a communication aid. He won the BBC New Comedy Award in 2014, has done three full Edinburgh shows and been tour support for Ross Noble, Patrick Kielty and Jason Cook. Lee has previously worked for Sunderland City Council's communications team, and the BBC in Newcastle and London as well, as various local newspapers.
Katherine Jakeways is the co-creator and co-writer of Ability. Katherine is a multi-award nominated writer. She has written North by Northamptonshire, Guilt Trip and All Those Women for BBC Radio 4 as well as numerous radio plays. She has also written for Crackanory and The Tracey Ullman Show for TV along with a BBC 1 pilot, Carol and Vinney.
A Funny Bones production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in May 2018.
SUN 13:00 The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 3/4 by Sue Townsend (Omnibus) (b096nyvg)
Episode 1
Sue Townsend's hilarious and heart breaking chronicle of a teenager growing up in the Midlands in the 1980s. A brand new serialisation, read by Harry McEntire, in the year that Adrian Mole himself turns 50.
It's 1981 and Margaret Thatcher is in power, Britain is at war in the Falklands and teenagers are growing up in a world without mobile phones or computer games. While his parents are downstairs, drinking, smoking and arguing about their failing marriage, Adrian is upstairs in his bedroom listening to Abba, reading great works of literature, writing poems, and penning letters to the BBC.
Despite the many challenges that life throws at him - including regular beatings from the school bully, unrequited love, raging hormones, a severe case of acne and numerous rejection letters - Adrian soldiers on bravely and wins a place in our hearts with his charming naïveté.

SUN 15:30 The Uncanny (b01k2bvn)
It's that sense of unease or disquiet at the heart of ghost fiction and horror writing, the stuff of bad dreams when the familiar is suddenly strange, a feeling of a place being unsettlingly out of place. The uncanny is everywhere.
So why is it that the familiar, or that which is closest to home, can be so much more frightening to us than the truly exotic or unknown? Freud's extraordinary essay The Uncanny, from 1919, is like nothing else he wrote. It's a translation of the German 'un-heimlich' meaning 'not homely' or 'a feeling of not being at home'. But the term itself is strange. In German its meaning can shift so 'uncanny/un-heimlich' can be read, eerily, as 'homely but not at home' - a disquieting ambiguity.
Freud tries to unravel that sense of the 'uncanny' that he sees everywhere in popular art and culture: in the fiction of Poe and E.T.A. Hoffman, in life-like puppets and mannequins which for a second we think are real, in doppelgangers and doubles, in the strange feeling of getting lost in a familiar place.
He was arguably onto something. The uncanny really is discernable everywhere in fiction, film and art - from Mary Shelly to Asimov, from Invasion of the Body Snatchers to the Chapman Brothers. This atmospheric programme explores the power of the Uncanny in our culture - in all its strange, unsettling manifestations.
Presented by Hugh Haughton. Contributors include author AS Byatt, artists the Chapman Brothers, writer and actor Mark Gatiss and psychotherapist Adam Phillips.

The Fan Dance
Infantry soldiers are trained, challenged and shaped by the Brecon Beacons. Horatio Clare walks with former soldiers to see the Welsh mountains through their eyes.
For decades the Brecon Beacons in South Wales have played an important part in British Army infantry training. Soldiers have walked, crawled, run, taken cover, got cold and wet, cursed and been shaped by the terrain of the Brecon Beacons. Writer Horatio Clare, who grew up in the Beacons, meets former infantry soldiers to explore their unique and lasting relationship with this landscape.
1. The Fan Dance: Horatio sets out to walk the infantry training route known as The Fan Dance, so called because it takes you over Pen y Fan, the highest peak in southern Britain. He's joined in the hills by former Parachute Regiment officers Adam Dawson and Evan Fuery and by Ed Butler who commanded British Forces in Afghanistan in 2006. The three soldiers talk about their deep physical and psychological connection with these upland border landscapes and the fact that, wherever they have served, wherever they're from originally, the Brecon Beacons become 'home'.
Horatio also gets first-hand experience of infantry endurance training and skills from Steve Rees, a former Royal Marine physical training and outdoor pursuits instructor. As he shoulders a 55 pound bergen – the military term for a rucksack – and Steve puts him through his paces, Horatio experiences first-hand a soldier's focused, exhausting, exhilarating intimacy with the landscape. He discovers how to turn it to your advantage and use it as cover; and what you see and know if it as you move invisibly through it, gone to earth.

Make Me a Channel of Your Peace
The hymn 'Make Me a Channel of Your Peace' found its way into weddings, funerals and school assemblies and in this week's 'Soul Music' we hear how it has also embedded itself into the hearts of peace campaigners, charity workers and reformed alcoholics.
The simplicity of this hymn often belies the challenges at its heart. Its lyrics call for unconditional love and forgiveness in the toughest situations. The words are based on a poem which has often been attributed to St Francis of Assisi. However, Franciscan Historian, Dr Christian Renoux, suggests it was most likely to have been written by an anonymous French noble women.
The poem travelled across the globe with translations published during the first and second world wars, subsequently bringing inspiration to public figures ranging from Mother Theresa to President Roosevelt.
In 1967 it caught the eye of South African born musician and 'yogi' Sebastian Temple who put these words to its most famous musical arrangement. It's Sebastian's version that was played at Princess Diana's funeral and that has also touched the hearts of millions worldwide.
Mathew Neville of children's charity 'World Vision' recalls his encounter with this hymn in the Democratic Republic of Congo, whilst closer to home Wendy and Colin Parry share their memories of this music and the role it played in remembering their son Tim, who was killed in the 1993 Warrington Bombings.
In Minnesota former lawyer Mike Donohue reflects on how this hymn has guided him on a journey through alcohol abuse and dementia and Sarah Hershberg remembers her good friend Sebastian Temple, who first played this simple hymn in her front room before it went on to travel the world.

WED 07:00 Can't Tell Nathan Caton Nothing (b04jm36p)
Series 3
About Bad Boys
In a mix of stand-up and re-enacted family life - Nathan Caton tries to be a good role model for his younger brother Tyree.
Written by Nathan Caton and James Kettle
Can't Tell Nathan Caton Nothing is a series about young, up-and-coming comedian Nathan Caton, who after becoming the first in his family to graduate from University, opted not to use his architecture degree but instead to try his hand at being a full-time stand-up comedian, much to his family's horror and disgust. They desperately want him to get a 'proper job.'
Each episode illustrates the criticism, interference and rollercoaster ride that Nathan endures from his disapproving family as he tries to prove himself.
Janet a.k.a. Mum is probably the kindest and most lenient of the disappointed family members. At the end of the day she just wants the best for her son. However, she'd also love to brag and show her son off to her friends, but with Nathan only telling jokes for a living that's kind of hard to do.
Martin a.k.a. Dad works in the construction industry and was looking forward to his son getting a degree so the two of them could work together in the same field. But now Nathan has blown that dream out of the window. Martin is clumsy and hard-headed and leaves running the house to his wife (she wouldn't allow it to be any other way).
Shirley a.k.a. Grandma cannot believe Nathan turned down architecture for comedy. She can't believe she left the paradise in the West Indies and came to the freezing United Kingdom for a better life so that years later her grandson could 'tell jokes!' How can her grandson go on stage and use foul language and filthy material... it's not the good Christian way!
So with all this going on in the household what will Nathan do? Will he persevere and follow his dreams? Or will he give in to his family's interference? Or will he finally leave home?!
Producer: Katie Tyrrell
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2014.
WED 07:30 The Cold Swedish Winter (m000182j)
Series 4
Childhood
The fourth series of the comedy following the fortunes of a British comic who has married into a Swedish family and is building a new life in Scandinavia.
The series is set and recorded on location in Sweden, written Danny Robins (co-creator and writer of the Lenny Henry comedy Rudy’s Rare Records), and stars Edinburgh Comedy Award-winning comedian Adam Riches along with a cast of Sweden’s most popular TV comedy actors.
We catch up with Geoff (Adam Riches) and Linda (Sissela Benn) as the generous period of Swedish paternity leave comes to an end. It's time to discuss sending their son John to dagis (nursery school) and launching Geoff onto the unsuspecting Swedish job market. This means Geoff must come to terms with conflicting attitudes towards health and safety, the sinister undertones of Pippi Longstocking and what happens when the entire staff of a Swedish office ‘kicks off’.
In his new, tiny, unpronounceable, Northern home-town of Yxsjö, Geoff confronts the Scandinavian practice of ‘death-cleaning’, the Mosquito Museum, white water canoeing and Swedish attitudes towards gender equality. His father-in-law Sten (Thomas Oredsson) becomes the voice of Geoff’s conscience and Gunilla (Anna-Lena Bergelin), his mother-in-law, helps him make a commercial.
In this first episode, Geoff worries about trolls, mortality and poisoned blueberries.

2. Cover from View: Horatio spends a night bivouacking in the hills with former Parachute Regiment reserve officer Nic Shugar and Royal Marine Gary Mapletoft who teach him the skills of remaining unseen in the landscape; of using it strategically; of dead ground, cover from view and cover from fire. And they explore inner landscapes as they consider the hills' importance in the healing process for both military and civilian mental health casualties.
The landscape of the Brecon Beacons played an important part in preparing soldiers for the Falklands War. Horatio talks to Col. John Crosland who fought with the Parachute Regiment at the Battle of Goose Green. John recalls how British infantry soldiers felt on familiar terrain in the Falklands because it reminded them of the Beacons where they had trained.
Horatio also meets Maj. Gen Tony Jeapes, a former Commanding Officer of the SAS who ran selection for the regiment in the Brecon Beacons in the early 1960s.

Series 5
Episode 2
Everyone craves a place where their mind and body are not applied to a particular task. The nearest faraway place. Somewhere for drifting and lighting upon strange thoughts which don't have to be shooed into context, but which can be followed like balloons escaping onto the air. Late at night, in the dark and in a bunk bed your tired mind can wander.
Patrick Marber and Peter Curran return with a dozy vengeance. Tonight they discuss the failings of James Bond as an English role model compared to Playschool presenter Brian Cant, the link between short trousers and bullying, and the soulfulness of the sock drawer.

Sathnam Sanghera on Alexander Gardner
Author and Journalist Sathnam Sanghera nominates a Great Life; a man dismissed as a fantasist and a liar in his own lifetime. Alexander Gardner was a Scottish-American soldier, a traveller, an explorer and adventurer - a white man with a tartan turban, who ended up in India in a Maharaja's Sikh Army in the 19th Century, just before the British Raj took over. Possibly a plagiarist and touted as a scoundrel, yet Sathnam claims he's worthy of a bigger place in history. If just a tiny portion of what we think we know about him is true, he is a genuinely remarkable figure.
Joining Sathnam is our expert witness to Gardner's life, the historian John Keay.
The presenter is Matthew Parris, and the Producer is Perminder Khatkar.

Episode 2
Comic monologues in which a range of characters find themselves engaging in that most un-British of activities: talking to a stranger.
Each piece is a character study: funny, frank, absurd, moving... Characters include a sex councillor who loves to draw, a spy who loves to share, a woman who likes to help too much ('I'm a serial helpist...'), a frustrated falconer, and a cheater who has to call her cheatee the morning after. And in this show, the listener themselves 'plays' the silent stranger in the piece...
