Winter Ladybirds
It’s autumn, the leaves are falling, the temperature dropping and the nights lengthen.
This is a time when many animals begin to slow down and prepare for the long winter months ahead. The gardener's friend, the ladybird is one such animal which in late autumn begins to move into many houses as a welcome guest.
Joanna Pinnock heads to the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology in Oxfordshire where on a windy day, she joins Dr Helen Roy and PhD student Richard Comont to investigate what is happening as ladybirds come indoors.
Beginning inside Helen's house, Joanna notices ladybirds all around the windows. Ladybirds like pale walls, a reminder of their natural environment, rocky mountains with light coloured surfaces.
But recently our native ladybirds have been joined by the harlequin ladybird, a species that is more likely to be seen in the house this year. Why this is the case remains a mystery.
There are over 40 species of ladybird in Britain, with the 7 spot the most familiar. However when they come into their dormant state, parasites and fungi begin to attack the 7 spot and other ladybirds, with the winter months being the time of greatest mortality.
But new research is being carried out to see if this parasite is about to begin attacking the harlequin. Richard takes Joanna to see his experimental plots and explain why the ladybirds need a winter dormant state to survive.

In this extended version of Tweet of the Day, we hear from Mike Toms of the British Trust for Ornithology, Sir David Attenborough, and author of a book on owls, Miriam Darlington.

Tweet Take 5: Pink Footed Geese
The arrival of thousands of pink footed geese to the British coastline in autumn is for many as important as the first summer migrants from Africa. These noisy geese arrive from their breeding grounds in Iceland to spend the winter on British farmland in internationally important numbers. It's thought over 200,000 geese overwinter here taking advantage of changes in agricultural crops and the mild winter.
Pink footed geese also stir something in our imagination, a call of the wild maybe? They inspire creativity and memories. In this extended version of Tweet of the Day we hear from audio-visual artist Kathy Hind and Val Thompson, alongside the music of Karine Polwart and Pippa Murphy.

About Intelligence
Nathan Caton illustrates what can happen when you try to prove to your family how clever you are.
A mix of stand-up and re-enacted family life - written by Nathan Caton and James Kettle
Young, up-and-coming comedian Nathan Caton, who after becoming the first in his family to graduate from University, opted not to use his architecture degree but instead to try his hand at being a full-time stand-up comedian, much to his family's horror and disgust. They desperately want him to get a 'proper job.'
Janet a.k.a. Mum is probably the kindest and most lenient of the disappointed family members. At the end of the day she just wants the best for her son. However, she'd also love to brag and show her son off to her friends, but with Nathan only telling jokes for a living that's kind of hard to do.
Martin a.k.a. Dad works in the construction industry and was looking forward to his son getting a degree so the two of them could work together in the same field. But now Nathan has blown that dream out of the window. Martin is clumsy and hard-headed and leaves running the house to his wife (she wouldn't allow it to be any other way).
Shirley a.k.a. Grandma cannot believe Nathan turned down architecture for comedy. She can't believe she left the paradise in the West Indies and came to the freezing UK for a better life so that years later her grandson could 'tell jokes!' How can her grandson go on stage and use foul language and filthy material... it's not the good Christian way!
So with all this going on in the household what will Nathan do? Will he persevere and follow his dreams? Or will he give in to his family's interference? Or will he finally leave home?!

SAT 13:00 Pieces of Britney (p09mw6rh)
8. #FreeBritney
Pandora Sykes explores the movement to liberate Britney from her conservatorship - and considers the future of fame
In this eight-part series for BBC Radio 4, Pandora traces Britney’s incredible life: from her hardscrabble childhood in rural Louisiana, to her coronation as the inaugural pop princess of the internet, navigating an insatiable celebrity gossip complex; through to a young mother on trial by the paparazzi.
Britney is a pop culture phenomenon. Pandora looks behind that mask - and beyond Britney herself - to explore how Britney became the most Googled person in the world, for almost 7 years, and what it says, both then and now, about the entertainment industry, politics, sex and how we see women in the public eye.
Britney’s public struggles saw her placed in a conservatorship, that she remains in to this day, and in which she has lost the right to control her finances and day to day life. Today, as Britney fights to remove her father from his role as her conservator, we will look at how Britney has been transformed from girl-next-door teen sensation to pop music’s Rapunzel, trapped in a supposedly rotten system.
Pieces of Britney mixes documentary, archive and interviews to tell Britney’s remarkable story. It also features drama, written by playwright Katie Hims, to bring Britney and her extraordinary world to life.
Pieces of Britney will be a sympathetic portrayal of Britney, during a time of cultural reappraisal about how we treat women - famous, or otherwise.
Episode 8 Cast:
Britney . . . . . Samantha Dakin
Lynne . . . . . Laurel Lefkow
Young Britney . . . . . Maddie Evans
Other parts were played by Joseph Ayre, Elinor Coleman, Tony Turner and Simon Ludders.

SUN 06:00 The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (Omnibus) (m0010xk4)
There's a plot afoot - again - to unseat Miss Brodie at the Marcia Blaine School for Girls in Edinburgh.
Omnibus of five parts read by Gerda Stevenson
Muriel Spark's best-known and best-loved novel tells the justly enduring story of Jean Brodie - a school teacher who eschews the normal curriculum in favour of lessons on the Italian Renaissance painters, on Mussolini and with stories of her own love life.
As she seeks to mould her 'set' of girls 'of an impressionable age', into the 'crème de la crème', and as her love life becomes complicated by affections for, and from, the art and the singing masters, she identifies two girls, one of 'instinct' and one of 'insight', in whom her ambitions will chiefly lie. But despite her own unassailable convictions, life does not always work out as planned and amongst her own set there will be those who begin to question her authority and her purpose.
A writer with a keen eye, a biting wit and a pithy sense of the comic, Muriel Spark created in Jean Brodie a character who remains as vivid and recognisable as she was in 1963, the year the book was published. Charismatic, unfettered by school boundaries, literal or metaphorical, she is the teacher who steps beyond the bounds of prescriptive education to the true sense of the word - opening the eyes of her girls to a wider world.
Spark also captures the city of Edinburgh, a character in itself, and of a time - those years in the 1930s when, denied conventional marriage, war-bereaved women sought other paths to fulfilment.
Sparkling, funny, fresh and tragic, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie fully deserves its place in the canon of 20th century literature.

Musicians
Nile Rodgers
From The Doors to Sister Sledge.
Grammy-winning composer, musician, and producer Nile Rodgers shares his castaway choices with Lauren Laverne
With his own band, Chic, Nile has been enticing people on to the dance floor since the mid-1970s with hits like Le Freak and Good Times. With over 200 production credits to his name, he has worked on many highly successful albums from Sister Sledge’s We Are Family to David Bowie’s Let’s Dance and Madonna’s Like a Virgin.
Born in New York City in 1952 to a teenage mother, he spent his early life immersed in his parents’ bohemian, beatnik, and drug-dominated lifestyle. Drugs played a part in Nile's life too from an early age, and he took his first acid trip with Timothy Leary at the age of 15. After learning to play the guitar, he got his musical break touring with the Sesame Street stage show and playing in the house band of Harlem’s Apollo Theatre, where he met bassist Bernard Edwards with whom he developed a productive musical partnership and went on to found Chic.
Following the Disco Sucks movement of the late 1970s, Nile and Bernard turned to production, and sprinkled their magic dust on Sister Sledge and Diana Ross. When Nile and Bernard went their separate ways in the early 1980s, Nile forged ahead on his own, working with, among others, Madonna, Michael Jackson, David Bowie and Duran Duran.
Nile went into rehab in 1994 and has been clean and sober for the past 24 years and has received successful treatment for cancer twice.
He won three Grammys for his 2013 collaboration with the French electronic music duo Daft Punk, and has recently released the first Chic album in 26 years.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in October 2018.

The Date
Matt can only speak via an app. Will his carer pretend to be him for an online date?
Matt is 25. He has cerebral palsy and can only speak via an app on his iPad. Everyone who cares about Matt knows that this isn't the defining thing about him. He is funny and clever and "up for stuff" - partly because he is keen to show that there's nothing he can't do, but also because, if he's honest, he's aware that he's less likely than other people to get the blame.
Now Matt's left home for the first time and moved in to share a flat with his best mate, Jess. But when Bob (Allan Mustafa) shows up as the new carer, the fun really starts. Bob is new to the job and, although willing, domestic duties are not really his forte. He's better at selling weed and dealing in knocked off iPads.
But he likes Matt and treats him like a real person. So, as far as Matt is concerned, Bob is here to stay.

Bob ...... Allan Mustafa

SUN 13:00 The Surreal Life of Leonora Carrington (Omnibus) (b08tj37y)
Leonora Carrington, born in 1917, was the last surviving member of the Surrealist movement of the 1930s.
A prodigious painter and writer, she was caught up in some of the most exciting - and most terrible - events of the 20th century.
Joanna Moorhead tells the remarkable life story of her father's cousin.
Omnibus in five parts read by Juliet Stevenson.
Introduced by Joanna Moorhead
Aged 17, Leonora Carrington rejected her upper class English upbringing and her family, in favour of the bohemian life of an artist, first in London and then Paris. She became the lover and muse of Max Ernst, and friend of Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and many other creative geniuses.
Soon after the outbreak of the war however, she suffered a mental breakdown and ended up in an asylum in Madrid. She eventually escaped war-torn Europe by marrying a Mexican, which enabled her passage to New York, and from there she journeyed to Mexico where she lived out the rest of her life.
Mexico is where Joanna Moorhead went to find Leonora in 2006. During Joanna's childhood, all she knew was that her father's cousin had been a wild child who had caused the family no end of trouble and "simply flounced off into the sunset". But this first visit of many was the start of a life-changing friendship. During days of talking and reading, of drinking tea and tequila, of going for walks and eating in local restaurants Leonora told Joanna her amazing life story.
This book is the story of Leonora Carrington's life, and of the relationship between two women. And it's about Surrealism as Leonora lived it - a way of approaching the world in a spirit of constant curiosity, with the desire to work out, if not the answers, then at least some of the questions.

TUE 14:30 Changing My Voice (b01k9vh0)
Christopher Gabbitas asks why singers sometimes have to change the pitch of their voice. How do they learn to perform in another register and what effect does the change have?
Christopher Gabbitas is a member of the vocal group the King's Singers. He originally began his career as a bass, able to sing the lowest notes with ease. But when he auditioned for the group, the vacancy was for the higher baritone voice and he had to learn to sing in that new range.
Some classical singers have to change their voice because of the effects of ageing. If they've been a high soprano perhaps they now have problems hitting the top notes and may decide to pursue a career in the lower mezzo range. Men, as in the recent case of the celebrated tenor Plácido Domingo, may decide to move from being a tenor to singing baritone.
Other singers discover that, although they may have begun in one register, they are more suited to another. The opera singer Grace Bumbry began her career as a low soprano but discovered that she was able to sing higher and changed - to huge critical acclaim.
And there are cases of injury to the vocal chords, which can also cause a singer to have to change register.
But it's not easy to change your voice. Although it can prolong a singer's performing life, changing pitch can be an unnerving process. There are new techniques to learn. The ear has literally to be retuned and the brain rewired to adapt to a new vocal range. And the way performers often think of themselves in stereotypes- a romantic tenor for example, or a coloratura soprano- has to be revised.
In this feature, Christopher goes on a personal exploration of the art of voice changing. He examines his own experiences and talks to other singers who have switched ranges, to see how fundamental such shifts can be. Interviewees include the singers Grace Bumbry and Rosalind Plowright.

Series 3
About Paranoia
In a mix of stand-up and re-enacted family life - Nathan Caton illustrates how watching too much TV can make you paranoid and that can have serious repercussions for your family.
Written by Nathan Caton and James Kettle
After becoming the first in his family to graduate from University, Nathan opted not to use his architecture degree but instead to try his hand at being a full-time stand-up comedian, much to his family's horror and disgust.
She can't believe she left the paradise in the West Indies and came to the freezing United Kingdom for a better life so that years later her grandson could 'tell jokes!' How can her grandson go on stage and use foul language and filthy material... it's not the good Christian way!
So with all this going on in the household what will Nathan do? Will he persevere and follow his dreams? Or will he give in to his family's interference? Or will he finally leave home?!

It's three years since Geoff moved to the tiny north Swedish town of Yxsjö with his girlfriend Linda (Sissela Benn from the Swedish version of The Office). It has been quite a culture shock and they've been through a lot in three years - rotting herring, moose and bears, battles with language, perfect ex-boyfriends and ice hockey, the birth of a son, a marriage proposal and plumbing. With the help of his loved-up parents-in-law, Sten and Gunilla (Thomas Oredsson and Anna-Lena Bergelin), Geoff is now looking forward to a settled family life. But who is going to paty for all this?
In the final episode of this series, Geoff negotiates the generous Swedish parental benefits system, the rewards - and otherwise - of dealing with a marauding toddler, and the terrifying perfectionism of his fellow Swedish dads.

WED 11:00 Great Lives - Four Hundred and Counting (m0010xqx)
3. G.B.S. to Godber
From George Bernard Shaw to Richard Beckinsale - Matthew Parris on the rows, revelations and rank incompetence behind 400 editions of Great Lives.
Deep in the summer of 2001, a new programme tiptoed out onto Radio 4. The concept was simple – book someone famous to talk about someone dead. Except there was a problem; famous people don’t talk much about someone else. In a world of the celebrity plug, getting voices to commit to a radio programme where they couldn’t talk about themselves was proving tough. Twelve slots to fill, and nobody signed up.
400 episodes later… Barbara Castle, Beryl Bainbridge, Bernard Manning, eventually everyone says yes. In this episode, Christopher Hitchens was so incensed by the presenter that he walked out. “You’re a bleeding Tory,” he said, “and always have been. Have you done? I have to be somewhere at one.”
Matthew Parris and original series producer Miles Warde go behind the scenes to find out how Great Lives was born. Featuring material never previously played - nominators and experts about their hopes and fears; archive of original presenters Joan Bakewell and Humphrey Carpenter; plus a special selection of the very best of Great Lives.

WED 14:30 Winslow Homer's Odyssey (b04p7yg1)
Michael Smith heads home to the North on the trail of Winslow Homer, an American artist who mysteriously spent 20 months in the Tyneside fishing village of Cullercoats.
Seen as a national treasure in the States, Homer first rose to fame with his powerful depcitions of the civil war, and by the late 1870s he was America's pre-eminent watercolourist. Yet in 1881, this enigmatic and secretive artist travelled first to London then north to Cullercoats, in search of 'atmosphere and colour.'
Michael visits the Watch House and talks to local art historian Steve Radcliffe, who describes the harsh life of the fisherfolk that so fascinated him, then walks the beautiful bay with Susan Johnson, granddaughter of Homer's favourite muse, fishergirl Maggie Storey.
American author Helen Cooper, says that Homer's decision to stay on after the summer season into the wild winter weather inspired him to paint the raw power of the sea.
Homer soon came to feel at home amongst the fisherfolk of Cullercoats, donning a fisherman's gansey and playing billiards in the pub, and this change of character also signified a turning point in his career, as art historian David Tatham explains.
On his return to the States Homer continued to paint Cullercoats and soon left New York for Prout's Neck in Maine, where he spent the rest of his life painting the wild Atlantic. Karen Sherry of the Portland Museum of Art, feels his time in Cullercoats raised his art from keen observations of American life to masterful portrayals of universal themes.
Jonathon Barrand, Cullercoats resident and tourism officer who runs arts heritage tours, shares his pride and pleasure in seeing the name of his little village besides Homer's work in the great galleries of America.

The Confession of Ed Byrne
Stephen Mangan presides over the comedy chat show about shame and embarrassment.
Each week Stephen Mangan invites a different eminent guest into his virtual confessional box to make three 'confessions' to him. This is a cue for some rich and varied storytelling, and surprising insights as their confessions are put under the microscope. Settle back for more revelations of guilt and mortification.
This week Stephen interviews Ed Byrne, whose career as a stand-up comedian has garnered him huge popular and critical success. Also known for his work as an actor and a TV presenter with a passion for hill walking, he talks to Stephen about the dangers of forgetfulness, a misplaced reputation for erudition and one alarming fantasy.
Other guests in the series: Olivia Williams, Anthony Horowitz, Shaparak Khorsandi, Konnie Huq and David Quantick.

FRI 14:30 Hearing Ragas (b01mf7nd)
This is violinist Professor Paul Robertson's remarkable story of the Indian ragas he heard from within a coma, and the healing effect that Sir John Tavener's music had on him in his recovery.
When Paul and John met at a conference in 2007 they discovered that they had a shared interest in near death experiences and John stated that he wanted to write a piece for Paul involving four string quartets to be called "Towards Silence". He wrote the piece and Paul started to make arrangements for its premiere. However, John suffered a heart attack and was taken into intensive care in Switzerland. Within weeks, Paul's aorta gave way and he found himself in a London hospital in a coma. Paul had a series of horrific visions, but was occasionally comforted by the sound of a woman singing Indian ragas. Only when he came out of the coma did he realise that the music John had written for him: "Towards Silence", was based on an Indian raga. Paul then used the practising of this piece to rehabilitate himself after the paralysing strokes he'd suffered. Paul and John are brought together for the first time to share their experiences;how they view their respective illnesses and how these episodes have changed their lives.
It includes music by Sir John Tavener, a soundtrack by Simon Hall and Sanchita Pal singing Ragas.
Producer: Rosie Boulton

Dee Caffari has solo circumnavigated the globe, braving icebergs in the Southern Ocean along the way: "We surf down huge waves on the edge of control at breakneck speeds - any collision would be the end of the race. Rescue is often days away and our closest chance of survival is a fellow competitor."
