A portrait of one of the most fascinating figures in dance.
Flamboyant, theatrical, loud, choreographer Mark Morris is also a thoughtful, considered self-taught scholar of music.
And it's his extraordinary musicality that earned him, from the beginning, a reputation with musicians. The likes of Yo Yo Ma and Emmanuel Ax have sought him out as a collaborator.
We accompany dance professor Stephanie Jordan to Sadler's Wells during Morris' visit to London, with exclusive access to his rehearsals, watching him direct his company in two new works. We also speak to two of his most experienced dancers in Dresden, and tour his famous dance headquarters in Brooklyn, New York.
Interviewing New York critics Joan Acocella and Alastair Macaulay, as well as Mark Morris himself, we build up a profile of a brilliantly talented and visionary choreographer. And discover why he places such value on music (Baroque in particular), how his distinctive style of choreography has evolved, and aims for his company.

So far Henry has covered ‘Family’, ‘Life’, ‘Love’, ‘Imagination’, ‘Nature’ and ‘The Universe’; in this new episode he explores ‘Communication’, recorded with a virtual audience.
Through poetry, stories, jokes and quotes Henry will be looking at the way ‘how’ we communicate colours ‘what’ we communicate and exploring ‘why’ we communicate in the first place.

Sue Cameron on Emma of Normandy
Twice Queen of England and mother of two kings, but have you heard of Emma of Normandy?
Doyenne of Whitehall and Westminster journalists, Sue Cameron names William the Conqueror's aunt as her great life.
Matthew Parris explores the time 1,000 years ago when England was emerging as a new nation in the decades before the Norman invasion, when the country's Anglo Saxon rulers were beset with Viking invasions. Emma, herself of French Viking descent, was pitched into a maelstrom of war and politics, when she crossed the channel as a teenage bride in 1002.
Joined by medieval historian Vanessa King of Goldsmiths, University of London, Sue and Matthew conjure the fortunes of a woman who emerged as a key powerbroker and kingmaker. Emma bestrode early English court politics for half a century during her life, and for years afterwards. Married first to Aethelred, the Saxon king, she was promptly summoned to marry his successor after his death in 1016, the Danish king of England, Canute, who's alleged to have ordered the waves to cease.
Sue Cameron imagines what it must have been like for Emma in the midst of these turbulent times, trying to protect the sons she had with both kings, while advancing their position at court.

SAT 12:00 The Gatsby Factor (b01s8qxh)
Recorded on both sides of the Atlantic - Sarah Churchwell explores the enduring popularity of The Great Gatsby as a novel and as a source of inspiration for film and stage adaptations.
Back in 2011, it became a 'major motion picture' for the fourth time in its life - in a version by Baz Luhrmann.
In Britain, academic and broadcaster Sue visits the Northern Ballet and Wilton's Music Hall in London - both with versions of Gatsby
While in New York, she hears about the locations for the novel - the extreme wealth of north shore Long Island where Gatsby has his mansion, and the contrasting 'valley of ashes' where the poorer characters live.
Featuring luminaries at the New York Times who consider why this novel, more than any other, has burned it way into American consciousness.
How was Scott Fitzgerald in this the slimmest of novels, and with Gatsby the vaguest of protagonists, able to crack 'the kernal of the American fable'?

Football
Ian Wright
From Mozart to Stormzy.
Former Arsenal and England footballer Ian Wright shares his choices with Lauren Laverne
Ian is a former professional footballer and now a football pundit on TV and radio. He began his career at Crystal Palace before moving to Arsenal where he became their highest goal scorer of all time, a record only surpassed eight years later by Thierry Henry.
Born to a Jamaican couple in south-east London, Ian grew up with his mother and step-father. His biological father had left the family when Ian was under two years old. Things at home were difficult and Ian spent as much time as possible outside playing football.
At his primary school a teacher, Mr Pigden, took him under his wing and Ian would later credit him with changing his life. He left his secondary school at the age of 14 to get a job. Although he took part in trials for many professional football clubs as a teenager, he was never selected. He continued to play for amateur sides. By the age of 21, he had three children to provide for, so when Crystal Palace came calling in 1985, he turned them down three times before accepting a two-week trial, followed by a three-month contract. His football career had finally begun.
After impressing as a forward at Palace, he was bought by Arsenal for a record fee in 1991. He was called up to the England squad the same year and would go on to collect 33 caps. He spent his last couple of years in professional football at a number of clubs around the country and in total, he played 581 league games, scoring 387 goals for seven clubs in England and Scotland. Since his retirement from football in 2000, he has had a career as a pundit on both TV and radio.
He has eight children and has been happily married to his second wife, Nancy, since 2011.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2020.

Quetzalcoatlus
As Sir David Attenborough explains:
"The biggest animal to fly was not a bird, but a reptile."
It was a Quetzalcoatlus, a pterosaur with at least a 44 foot wingspan. David, a huge fan of palaeontology, is skilled in bringing the past natural histories to life through stories about the discovery of key fossils.
What a creature this "terrible lizard" must have been - big enough to scavenge the bodies of dead Tyrannosaurus and yet able to fly, probably in large numbers. And with a twist so typical of Sir David's writing, he brings this pterosaur to life at the very end.

SUN 18:00 Steve Erickson - Shadowbahn (m001016m)
The Twin Towers reappear in Dakota in 2021.
Nothing is predictable in this new America and reality and history are turned upside down. What exists and what is a shadow?
Steve Erickson's 2017 novel was hailed by critics as the first novel of the Trump era. It imagines checkpoints and borders and rupture zones in a country that's torn apart.
Parker, aged 23, and his 15 year-old sister Zema are driving from the West coast to see their mother in Michigan. On a news feed they hear that the Twin Towers have reappeared in South Dakota. Overnight. Out of nowhere. Strange sounds seem to be coming from them. Is there anyone inside? The buildings look pristine.
Dubbed by reporters on the scene as an "American Stonehenge", they immediately become a pilgrimage site.
Headstrong Zema insists that they change course and join the throng heading to the site. She has brought along mix tapes made by their dad who was a music DJ. The songs somehow reflect where they are and what they are thinking about. Astonished, they learn over social media that their car has become a magnet. Hashtag Supersonic. What is the strange cargo they carry?
Meanwhile, around the Twin Towers, every sightseer hears different music. And on a top floor in the otherwise empty South Tower, Jesse Presley the twin brother of Elvis wakes up. He has his own demons and music raging in his head.
Jesse's journey has parallels with Parker and Zema's. It's a supernaturally charged trip across an America which is familiar and yet eerily angry and dangerous, and back in altered time.
Steve Erickson, often described as a writer's writer, has had ten novels published in as many languages. He's known for Zeroville (soon to be seen as a movie), Our Ecstatic Days, and These Dreams of You which contains some of Shadowbahn's characters.
Recorded on location in Arizona and New York.

TUE 11:00 Pieces of Britney (p09mw62b)
5. Chaotic
Pandora Sykes navigates the media narratives around Britney, once she gets married and has kids.
In this eight-part series for BBC Radio 4, Pandora traces Britney’s incredible life: from her hardscrabble childhood in rural Louisiana, to her coronation as the inaugural pop princess of the internet, navigating an insatiable celebrity gossip complex; through to a young mother on trial by the paparazzi.
Britney is a pop culture phenomenon. Pandora looks behind that mask - and beyond Britney herself - to explore how Britney became the most Googled person in the world, for almost 7 years, and what it says, both then and now, about the entertainment industry, politics, sex and how we see women in the public eye.
Britney’s public struggles saw her placed in a conservatorship, in which she lost the right to control her finances and day to day life. Thirteen years later, and she is in court, pleading for this controversial legal arrangement to end. We look at how Britney has been transformed from girl-next-door teen sensation to pop music’s Rapunzel, trapped in a supposedly rotten system.
Pieces of Britney mixes documentary, archive and interviews to tell Britney’s remarkable story. It also features drama, written by playwright Katie Hims, to bring Britney and her extraordinary world to life.
Pieces of Britney is a sympathetic portrayal of Britney, during a time of cultural reappraisal about how we treat women - famous, or otherwise.

Kevin . . . . . Joseph Ayre
Lynne . . . . . Laurel Lefkow

TUE 14:30 Three Continents, Three Generations (b0435c83)
Radio producer Neil Kanwal traces the history of Kenyan Asian migration to Britain, a path followed by his own father's family across three continents and three generations.
In 1896 the British sent thousands of indentured labourers from India to Kenya, to build the Uganda Railway from Mombasa on Kenya's coast to Lake Victoria in Uganda. It was a remarkable feat of engineering and initiated a growing Asian presence in the country. Travelling on the same railroad today, Neil examines how the community prospered over the following decades.
Professor Yash Ghai shares memories of his formative years in the segregated society of colonial Kenya, whilst back at the British Library the presenter studies the records of the India Office to find out more about the challenges they faced.
During the sixties and seventies, facing uncertainty in a new, independent Kenya many utilised their link with Britain to settle in the UK, causing alarm amongst the government and public. From adjusting to British life, to the affect of migration on their identity, the programme concludes with the experiences of some of the 100,000 Kenyan Asians who made Britain their new home.
In this documentary the presenter embarks on a personal exploration of the unique experiences, culture and movements of Kenyan Asians, in a story of Empire, identity, discrimination and migration.

St John's College, Cambridge
A funny and dynamic quiz show hosted by Steve Punt - this week from St John's College, Cambridge with specialist subjects including Human, Social and Political Sciences, World History and Physics and questions ranging from Christoffel Symbols to Cannibal Rituals via August Strindberg and Jojo Moyes.
The programme is recorded on location at a different University each week, and it pits three Undergraduates against three of their Professors in an original and fresh take on an academic quiz.
The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the Highbrow and Lowbrow round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of television, sport, and quite possibly Justin Bieber. In addition, the Head-to-Head rounds see students take on their Professors in their own subjects, offering plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both sides.
Other Universities featured in this series include Roehampton, Hull, Derby, Liverpool and Queen's University Belfast.

Syd
Arthur Smith brings his hit Edinburgh Festival show to Radio 4.
Arthur's father Syd was an ordinary man in extraordinary times. Just 17 when he signed up, he fought at El Alamein, was captured and then imprisoned in Colditz and, after the war, joined the Metropolitan Police. He spent the rest of his working life patrolling the streets of London and had possibly the worst arrest rate in the force - having been a prisoner of war he had no desire to subject anyone else to suffer a loss of liberty.
In this funny and tender evocation of post-war Britain, Arthur brings us Syd's diary entries and conjures up the spirit of his father, a man of great integrity and humour.
Recorded in front of a live, socially distanced audience, with assistance from his brother Nick and music from Kirsty Newton.

2. Ian Hislop & Jimmy Mulville on Have I Got News For You
TV veterans Peter Fincham and Jon Plowman talk to the writers, producers, and performers behind Britain’s biggest TV comedy hits, and hear the inside story of how they brought their programmes to the screen.
In this second episode of the new series, Peter and Jon are joined by Ian Hislop and Jimmy Mulville to talk about their genre-defining topical comedy show, Have I Got News For You.
As they look back on HIGNFY’s 535 episodes in its 61 series to date, Ian and Jimmy discuss many of the show’s most controversial moments, including Bruce Forsyth’s ‘Play Your Iraqi Cards Right’.
They tell us how the programme began, and reveal how a young Armando Iannucci turned down the opportunity to make the show. They also both talk more candidly than ever about Angus Deayton’s departure from the show in 2002.
Naturally, they pay tribute to the unique brilliance of Ian’s fellow team captain, Paul Merton.

The Firesign Theatre
The Firesign Theatre make their first British appearance for many years at the London Comedy Store.
Since the mid 1960s, The Firesign Theatre has been one of the best kept secrets in American comedy. A four-man comedy troupe with shades of Monty Python and The Goons, they grew out of a free-form radio show in California. They went on to produce a series of comedy albums which became cult favourites, in which they combined satire with parodies of popular culture and classic drama.
Expect political comment, a virtuoso range of comic voices, and plenty of verbal ingenuity.
Series in which Mark Thomas introduces iconic American comedy performers.

A Day in October
Multi-award winning storyteller Sarah Kendall, brings her critically acclaimed trilogy of funny and moving, live shows to BBC Radio.
"This show is a story about a day in October in 1990, when I saw a miracle happen to a boy, and his name was George Peach..."
The story of Sarah's secret relationship with bullied classmate, George Peach. Following an accident at the beach, George Peach died for exactly 11 seconds. Sarah's story examines the remarkable effect those eleven seconds had on Sarah and her schoolmates. The show plays with the relationship between fiction and real-life and explores the redemptive power of storytelling.
A Day in October won the 2018 Writers' Guild Award the Audio Drama Award for best comedy production.
Taking her audience on a trip, Sarah gives a unique snapshot of small-town life in Australia in the early 90s . At a time when most people were seeing Australians through the filter of 'Home and Away' and 'Neighbours', Sarah's shows present a darker underbelly to the stereotype of the sun-loving, happy-go-lucky Aussie teenager.
Comedic and tragic in equal measure, Sarah's tales of her teenage life blend intricate narratives with a cast of memorable characters, bringing events to life in front of your very ears.
