SAT 13:00 Pieces of Britney (p09mw5q8)
3. The Fame Game
Pandora Sykes explores how her controversially-named debut single catapulted teenage Britney into stardom.
In this eight-part series for BBC Radio 4, Pandora traces Britney’s incredible life: from her hardscrabble childhood in rural Louisiana, to her coronation as the inaugural pop princess of the internet, navigating an insatiable celebrity gossip complex; through to a young mother on trial by the paparazzi.
Britney is a pop culture phenomenon. Pandora looks behind that mask - and beyond Britney herself - to explore how Britney became the most Googled person in the world, for almost 7 years, and what it says, both then and now, about the entertainment industry, politics, sex and how we see women in the public eye.
Britney’s public struggles saw her placed in a conservatorship, in which she lost the right to control her finances and day to day life. Thirteen years later, and she is in court, pleading for this controversial legal arrangement to end. We will look at how Britney has been transformed from girl-next-door teen sensation to pop music’s Rapunzel, trapped in a supposedly rotten system.
Pieces of Britney mixes documentary, archive and interviews to tell Britney’s remarkable story. It also features drama, written by playwright Katie Hims, to bring Britney and her extraordinary world to life.
Pieces of Britney is a sympathetic portrayal of Britney, during a time of cultural reappraisal about how we treat women - famous, or otherwise.

The Human Jukebox
Do you sing in the bath, whistle in the corridors, or hum nervously waiting on the phone?
Why do we sing to ourselves, do we even know we are doing it, and what about those infuriating phrases of music that we find stuck in our heads?
It seems that 90% of the population have experienced the mysterious playing of the 'Human Jukebox' - either whole tunes or short repetitive phrases. Whether to hide embarrassment, pass the time in a mundane job, or celebrate a happy moment, unconscious singing or whistling is a common trait.
Peter Curran, a self-hummer, explores a phenomenon which is under increased investigation.
As our understanding of the brain increases, so we can gather more understanding of how we relate to muisic, and that includes how so we select tunes from our internal jukebox.
Peter Curran, finds out from Professor Paul Robertson, founder of the Medici Quartet, the connection between music and emotion, and Dr Lauren Stewart, Reader in Psychology at Goldsmiths University, about her research project into the origination and nature of earworms, (or 'Ohrwurm' as they were originally described in German).
Pop producer Clive Langer, writer David Stafford and an assortment of human jukeboxes also share their compulsion to sing out loud.
Next time you find yourself whistling in the bath, maybe you'll understand more about what you are doing.

Football
John Motson
John Walker Motson, OBE, also known as Motty, has been commentating on football since 1971. He covered more than 2000 games on television and radio, including all the major football championships, 29 FA Cup finals (with an additional five replays), 10 World Cups, 10 European Championships and 200 England games. At the age of 72 he's just retired.
Known not only for his footballing knowledge and his voice, he is often recognised by his knee-length sheepskin coat. His passion for football was ignited by his father, a Methodist minister for 40 years, who on his one day off each week would take his only son to watch football. The first game John attended was at Charlton Athletic when he was seven, and the excitement of it inspired him to create scrapbooks of footballing facts and collect match programmes.
After five years at boarding school, where he wasn't allowed to play football, he left at 16 after one term doing A levels. He joined the Barnet Press as a trainee reporter and then moved onto the Sheffield Telegraph. When BBC Radio Sheffield, one of the first six local radio stations, came on air, he was one of the reporters pulled in to give match summaries. He then moved to the BBC as a sports assistant in radio, before joining the Match of the Day team on television.
He has been supported in his career by his solicitor wife, Annie, who meticulously kept details of every match in thick A4 books which John used for his preparation. He was awarded an OBE for services to football and in May 2018 he was honoured by BAFTA with a Special Award for his lifetime's work.

SUN 12:30 Micky Flanagan: What Chance Change? (b00sg13d)
1970s
Cockney geezer Micky Flanagan regales us with the story of his journey from tabloid to broadsheet; from the street party to the dinner party; from apples and pears to stocks and shares... Well you've got the idea.
Each week's episode focuses on a different decade of Micky's life. Micky regales us with stories from his life told through stand up comedy. In between, the programmes goes 'behind the scenes' with short interviews that give an insight into the stand up.
In this opening episode Micky talks about growing up in the East End in the 1970's. He chats to his school friends about their shared experiences of leaving with no qualifications to work at Billingsgate Fish Market. He also interviews Sociology Professor Paul Willis about his research on working class boys in a 1970's school.
Micky's transition from the mean streets of the East End, working as a Billingsgate Fish Porter to an entertainer living in the leafy lanes of Dulwich is a fascinating story, all the better for being told through jokes. The issue of class is a crucial theme in Micky's stand up. However it is framed less as "Do we now have a classless society?" and more as "Is it ok to ask for Tomato sauce in a fancy French restaurant?"
Written and performed by Micky Flanagan.
Produced by Tilusha Ghelani.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in May 2010.

SUN 15:30 In The Lounge With Rich Morton (b01cwszp)
For many casual listeners, the music usually defined as 'lounge' may conjure up something kitsch and outdated, bringing to mind the world of Austin Powers or the sentimental, string-sodden arrangements of their parents' record collections. As comedian, composer and lounge aficionado Rich Morton discovers, there's a large and healthy subculture of lounge lovers who view it as anything but outdated.
For the past twenty years, clubs devoted to lounge music have been thriving, and several successful series of lounge compilations have brought obscure and sought-after tracks by some of the greatest 20th century pop and jazz performers to the ears of a new generation. As a composer and collector of lounge tunes, Rich goes in search of the alchemy that produces a lounge classic: whether it's the voice of a Rat Pack regular, the tight brassy arrangement of a Neil Hefti or a Quincy Jones, the timeless simplicity of a Burt Bacharach or Tony Hatch melody - or simply a mood, something undefinable, laid-back, evocative of a time and a place that's anywhere but here.
Rich meets fellow lounge collectors, club owners and composers - with the shared passion for a music that's often overlooked or derided but, as the programme reveals, constantly being reinvented. New technology means that classic tracks are being rediscovered and shared as never before, producing fascinating advances and musical hybrids within lounge culture. Producer: Paul Bajoria.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2012.

TUE 10:00 Joseph Roth - The Radetzky March (b02117x0)
Episode 1
The end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire as seen through the lives of three generations of the Trotta family.
Joseph Roth's most celebrated novel dramatised in two-parts by Gregory Evans.
This is the story of the Trottas, a family of Slovenian peasants ennobled when Lieutenant Joseph Trotta saves Emperor Franz Joseph's life at the Battle of Solferino in 1859. Most of the action, however, is set in the early years of the twentieth century and con-cerns the next two generations of Trottas, a bureaucrat and a soldier: the Baron - stiff, guarded, but secretly loving - and his son, the feckless, disaster-prone Carl Joseph.
The Radetzky March is a novel about the ending of things: love affairs, friendships, individual lives, dynasties, an empire, a world.
Literary critic Harold Blom described Joseph Roth's The Radetzky March as "One of the most readable, poignant and superb novels in twentieth century German".

TUE 11:00 Pieces of Britney (p09mw5tt)
4. Gossip Girl
Pandora Sykes revisits the collusion of paparazzi, gossip culture and being a young female celebrity in the early 2000s.

TUE 14:30 Tacita Dean: Save This Language (b040llzm)
Leading British artist, Tacita Dean takes listeners with her on a mission to save a language. Not the kind that is spoken in a remote community, but an artistic one - photochemical film. She travels to UNESCO in Paris, to the Department of Intangible Cultural Heritage, to persuade the world's heritage keepers to act fast or lose what she considers the most important form of artistic expression of the 20th century.
As photochemical film heads for extinction, superceded by digital technologies, Tacita makes a compelling case for why we should do all we can to keep it alive.
"What I love most about film is the spontaneity and the blindness. When I made FILM for Tate Modern's Turbine Hall, everything was filmed inside the camera - different shapes, objects and architecture were effectively stencilled with light onto the emulsion, which was put through the camera multiple times. I couldn't see what I was doing so when I saw the results it was full of both miracle and disappointment. Some things far exceeded what I could have done deliberately, and that is the point - digital is too deliberate a medium for me, too intended. It's like working with the lights on the whole time and I am someone who craves the darkness too, and by that I mean I solicit the chance and the accident.
"This is one of many unintended losses that has happened with the transition from film to digital, but it is what I love the most in film and cinema - the in-between things, the things we don't imagine that just happen."
With film makers and artists including Ken Loach, John Smith, Ben Rivers, Iain Softley, Robbie Ryan and Guillermo Navarro.

The University of Derby
A funny and dynamic quiz show hosted by Steve Punt - this week from the University of Derby with specialist subjects including Education Studies, Forensics and Theatre Studies and questions ranging from cannibalistic beetles to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern with a passing nod to Olivia Newton-John and orbital mechanics.
The programme is recorded on location at a different University each week, and it pits three Undergraduates against three of their Professors in an original and fresh take on an academic quiz.
The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the Highbrow and Lowbrow round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of television, sport, and quite possibly Justin Bieber. In addition, the Head-to-Head rounds see students take on their Professors in their own subjects, offering plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both sides.
Other Universities featured in this series include Roehampton, Hull, Liverpool, Queen's University Belfast and St John's College Cambridge.

Sue Cameron on Emma of Normandy
Twice Queen of England and mother of two kings, but have you heard of Emma of Normandy? Doyenne of Whitehall and Westminster journalists, Sue Cameron names William the Conqueror's aunt as her great life.
Matthew Parris explores the time 1,000 years ago when England was emerging as a new nation in the decades before the Norman invasion, when the country's Anglo Saxon rulers were beset with Viking invasions. Emma, herself of French Viking descent, was pitched into a maelstrom of war and politics, when she crossed the channel as a teenage bride in 1002.
Joined by medieval historian Vanessa King of Goldsmiths, University of London, Sue Cameron and Matthew conjure the fortunes of a woman who emerged as a key powerbroker and kingmaker. Emma bestrode early English court politics for half a century during her life, and for years afterwards. Married first to Aethelred, the Saxon king, she was promptly summoned to marry his successor after his death in 1016, the Danish king of England, Canute, who's alleged to have ordered the waves to cease. Sue Cameron imagines what it must have been like for Emma in the midst of these turbulent times, trying to protect the sons she had with both kings, while advancing their position at court.

1. Ricky Gervais on The Office
TV veterans Peter Fincham and Jon Plowman talk to the writers, producers, and performers behind Britain’s biggest TV comedy hits, and hear the inside story of how they brought their programmes to the screen.
In the first episode of the new series of What’s Funny About… Peter and Jon talk to Ricky Gervais – the man who created, wrote, directed, and starred in what is, by any metric you’d care to measure it, one of the most influential sitcoms of the 21st century - The Office.
Ricky discusses the challenge of getting The Office commissioned and made, and the very real fear that the audience would think it was just another docu-soap, and simply wouldn’t realise it was a sitcom. He talks about how he crafted many of the show’s most famous moments and reveals how a combination of Homer Simpson, James Cagney, and a bloke with a pony tail who worked at a temp agency in Reading, all helped inspire the character of David Brent.

Communication
"Shove up National Treasures. We need to make room for Henry Normal"
Simon O'Hagan - Radio Times
The seventh instalment in this acclaimed, occasional series in which acclaimed, occasional writer Henry Normal tackles those subjects so big only radio can possibly contain them. So far Henry has covered ‘Family’, ‘Life’, ‘Love’, ‘Imagination’, ‘Nature’ and ‘The Universe’; in this new episode he explores ‘Communication’, recorded with a virtual audience.
Through poetry, stories, jokes and quotes Henry will be looking at the way ‘how’ we communicate colours ‘what’ we communicate and exploring ‘why’ we communicate in the first place.
Henry Normal is a multi-award winning writer, producer and poet. Co-writer of award winning TV programmes such as The Royle Family, The Mrs Merton Show, Coogan’s Run and Paul Calf, and producer of, amongst many others, Oscar-Nominated Philomena, Gavin and Stacey and Alan Partridge.
He’s published eight collections of poetry including his most recent ‘The Beauty Within Shadow’. Plus his memoir written with Angela Pell ‘A Normal Family’ everyday adventure with our autistic son.

FRI 14:30 Mark Morris: The Wild Card of Dance (b047c31b)
A portrait of one of the most fascinating figures in dance.
Flamboyant, theatrical, loud, choreographer Mark Morris is also a thoughtful, considered self-taught scholar of music.
And it's his extraordinary musicality that earned him, from the beginning, a reputation with musicians. The likes of Yo Yo Ma and Emmanuel Ax have sought him out as a collaborator.
In this programme, we accompany dance professor Stephanie Jordan to Sadler's Wells during Morris' visit to London, with exclusive access to his rehearsals, watching him direct his company in two new works. We also speak to two of his most experienced dancers in Dresden, and tour of his famous dance headquarters in Brooklyn, New York.
Interviewing New York critics Joan Acocella and Alastair Macaulay, as well as Mark Morris himself, we build up a profile of a brilliantly talented and visionary choreographer. The programme finds out why he places such value on music (and Baroque music in particular), how his distinctive style of choreography has evolved, and his aims for his company.
