Instant Gratification
Cheap credit and immediate online access to infinite availability have contributed to one of the defining characteristics of our time - the 'have it all' culture of being able to instantly gratify our wants and needs. But at what cost?
Dominic Arkwright explores the pleasures and pitfalls of instant gratification in the company of three speakers from very different walks of life. Representing the complete antithesis of the quick hit, tapestry weaver Jane Freear-Wyld shows Dominic a textile the size of a paperback, explaining how it takes 250 hours, or six working weeks, to make. Hers is a world away from the work of advertising creative director Matt Beaumont who arguably fuels our lust for not only jam today, but yesterday and tomorrow too. Meanwhile, Times columnist and writer Sathnam Sanghera, recently returned from a holiday in Mumbai, argues that it's the recent shift towards instant gratification that is fuelling India's rapidly rising standard of living, very different to an ethos that promises fulfilment neither now nor in in this life at all, but in the next one.

5. Michael Morpurgo
Five internationally acclaimed writers consider the impact of the momentous events of September 11th, 2001. Ten years on, these authors use imaginative letters to reflect on the consequences for Britain, America and the world.
The final 9/11 Letter is by the former Children's Laureate, Michael Morpurgo. Among the more than one hundred books he has written is 'War Horse', the stage version of which this year won a Tony Award on Broadway, and is being made into a film by Stephen Spielberg.
The imagined writer of Michael Morpurgo's letter is Ginny, who, when the first plane smashed into the North tower was waiting on a bench in Central Park for her husband to return from breakfast with their son, their first meeting since a rift seven years previously. What happened on 11th September, 2001 rent many families - including Ginny's - asunder, yet it also brought people together. Michael Morpurgo's letter, which he has titled 'A Proper Family' movingly explores this ambiguity.

2. A Star is Born
Pandora Sykes tells the story of Britney's hardscrabble childhood and stint as a Disney child star.
In this eight-part series for BBC Radio 4, Pandora traces Britney’s incredible life: from her hardscrabble childhood in rural Louisiana, to her coronation as the inaugural pop princess of the internet, navigating an insatiable celebrity gossip complex; through to a young mother on trial by the paparazzi.
Britney is a pop culture phenomenon. Pandora looks behind that mask - and beyond Britney herself - to explore how Britney became the most Googled person in the world, for almost 7 years, and what it says, both then and now, about the entertainment industry, politics, sex and how we see women in the public eye.
Britney’s public struggles saw her placed in a conservatorship, in which she lost the right to control her finances and day to day life. Thirteen years later, and she is in court, pleading for this controversial legal arrangement to end. We will look at how Britney has been transformed from girl-next-door teen sensation to pop music’s Rapunzel, trapped in a supposedly rotten system.
Pieces of Britney mixes documentary, archive and interviews to tell Britney’s remarkable story. It also features drama, written by playwright Katie Hims, to bring Britney and her extraordinary world to life.
Pieces of Britney is a sympathetic portrayal of Britney, during a time of cultural reappraisal about how we treat women - famous, or otherwise.

SUN 06:00 The 9/11 Letters (Omnibus) (m000zm3s)
Five internationally acclaimed writers consider the impact of the momentous events of September 11th, 2001.
Ten years on, these authors use imaginative letters to reflect on the consequences for Britain, America and the world.
The first letter is from Caryl Phillips, to his young nephew. He gives an eye-witness account of the day and those following, reflecting how the events changed him, and his identity as a "Resident Alien".
Naomi Alderman was working in an office overlooking the World Trade Centre when the planes struck the twin towers. Her experience that day led her to give up her law career and become a writer. But the character she imagines in her letter reflects an even more profound change.
Irish-Turkish writer Joseph O'Neill addresses his letter directly to listeners. He suggests that because of the mass coverage of the attack on the World Trade Centre, we were all 'there'. And so America's response to the attacks had profound implications for us all.
US novelist Lionel Shriver's letter is titled "Prepositions.' Her letter is to a woman whose husband died in 9/11, from a woman whose husband died on 9/11. Ten years on, the consequences of those little differences on the lives of these friends are huge and vastly different.
The final letter, 'A Proper Family' is by the former Children's Laureate, Michael Morpurgo. The imagined writer is Ginny, who, when the first plane smashed into the North tower was waiting on a bench in Central Park for her husband to return from breakfast with their son, their first meeting since a rift seven years previously.

In the mid-1980s, Sue became deputy chief executive (and a year later chief executive) of the National Coaching Foundation, which provided education for coaches at both ends of the spectrum, from parent volunteers to elite coaches.
In 1995, she co-founded the Youth Sport Trust to set up a sports activity programme for every primary school in the country. It was hugely successful: in 2003 only 23% of school children were getting two hours of PE a week. By 2008, this figure had risen to 95%. In 2010, the coalition government cut their funding.
By this time, back at the elite end of the sporting spectrum, Sue was also in charge of UK Sport, where she presided over Team GB's biggest Olympic medal haul in living memory, at the London 2012 games. In 2016, she became as head of Women’s Football at the FA. She has also been a cross-bench peer in the House of Lords since 2008.

Rats
It might be surprising to hear, but Sir David Attenborough has made it known over the years that rats are not his favourite animal.
In this piece, dedicated to his nemesis, Attenborough with great wit and skill tells us of the living nightmare he endured whilst on location in a place infested with them. If that wasn't enough, whilst making Life of Mammals, he devoted a whole programme to them - and to balance his own personal view went to an Indian temple where the rat is revered and even encouraged to swarm in vast numbers.
But in a clever twist of the story, as is the hallmark of David Attenborough, in no uncertain way he tells us why they should be respected.

Mother Tongue - The State We're In
Daljit Nagra selects Mother Tongue - The State We're In. From the globe trotting poetry series presented by Imtiaz Dharker. From 2019.
Poet Imtiaz Dharker explores exciting voices from around the world in their own languages and in translation.
In this episode, she hears poems written in Icelandic, in Hindustani from India, and in Amharic from Ethiopia. While thinking about the phrase "The State We’re In", she explores how these three poets have written about injustices and citizenship in very different ways.
There’s Kristín Svava Tómasdóttir, an impressive young voice from Reykjavik’s vibrant poetry scene. She serves up perceptive social criticism and environmental concern with wry humour and understated Scandinavian dread. Imtiaz talks to her about poems inspired by the Icelandic financial crisis of 2008 and internet search engines. The English translations are by KB Thors.
Hussain Haidry is a spoken word poet living in Mumbai. In his poem Hindustani Musalmaan, or Indian Muslim, he explores the many influences that make up his identity and refuses to be defined by just one aspect – being a Muslim. It struck a chord a couple of years ago when it was widely shared on social media. Imtiaz talks to him and recalls her time living in Mumbai.
Finally, Imtiaz discovers Ethiopia’s rich tradition of "wax and gold" poetry, where satire runs just below the superficial meaning. We hear poems with a political twist from Zewdu Milikit, a poet from the ancient city of Gondar in the north west of Ethiopia. The translations from the original Amharic are by poet Chris Beckett, who we also hear.

SUN 15:30 The Mysterious Mr. Mercury (m000zcq6)
Freddie Mercury was a hugely charismatic and dynamic performer who cultivated a flamboyant stage personality, and yet in private he was extremely shy and retiring, and gave very few interviews. To mark the 20th anniversary of his death, Midge Ure goes in search of the real Freddie Mercury.
"Queen's" unique brand of stadium rock appealed to audiences across the globe. The band were the first to play in South American stadiums in the 1980s, they stole the show at Live Aid in 1985 and three hundred thousand fans flocked to see Freddie Mercury's final live performance at Knebworth Park in 1986.
Mercury's sexual ambiguity was a particular source of intrigue. In 1969 he began a long-term relationship with Mary Austin. Throughout his life he referred to her as his 'common law wife' and his 'only friend'. Yet the wedding ring Mercury was wearing on his death bed was given to him by his male partner, Jim Hutton.
In the years following his triumph at Live Aid, Freddie Mercury was rarely seen in the public eye. His health became a subject of speculation, even though his colleagues and friends continually denied there was anything wrong with him. Finally, on the day before he died, Freddie made a public statement confirming that he was HIV positive and he had AIDS.
With Freddie's ex-girlfriend Mary Austin, Queen guitarist Brian May, music producers Mike Moran and Reinhold Mack, Queen roadie Peter Hince, and Freddie's personal assistant Peter Freestone.

MON 14:00 Tom Stoppard: A Life by Hermione Lee (m000n5gn)
Childhood
Sir Tom Stoppard is among British theatre’s giants. Hermione Lee's evocative and immersive biography tells the story of the man and his work. Since 1964 Stoppard has been writing for the theatre, big screen, television, and radio. His plays are among the most studied of the last century.
Hermione Lee is one of our leading literary biographers, and with access to private papers, diaries and letters, interviews with the playwright's friends, and Stoppard himself, she has created an intimate portrait of the writer. We learn of his formative years as a young child forced to flee Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia; growing up in India and then England; his activism and campaigning on behalf of Eastern European and Soviet prisoners of conscience; the influence of, and his friendship with Vaclav Havel, and always his work, the writing, rehearsing, casting and his ever present humour.
Tom remains at the forefront of British theatrical life, even in a moment of crisis. His most recent, personal and highly acclaimed play, Leopoldstadt, fell victim to Covid-19, when its run in the West End was suspended in March, 2020, before resuming in August, 2021.

MON 14:30 In The Lounge With Rich Morton (b01cwszp)
For many casual listeners, the music usually defined as 'lounge' may conjure up something kitsch and outdated, bringing to mind the world of Austin Powers or the sentimental, string-sodden arrangements of their parents' record collections. As comedian, composer and lounge aficionado Rich Morton discovers, there's a large and healthy subculture of lounge lovers who view it as anything but outdated.
For the past twenty years, clubs devoted to lounge music have been thriving, and several successful series of lounge compilations have brought obscure and sought-after tracks by some of the greatest 20th century pop and jazz performers to the ears of a new generation. As a composer and collector of lounge tunes, Rich goes in search of the alchemy that produces a lounge classic: whether it's the voice of a Rat Pack regular, the tight brassy arrangement of a Neil Hefti or a Quincy Jones, the timeless simplicity of a Burt Bacharach or Tony Hatch melody - or simply a mood, something undefinable, laid-back, evocative of a time and a place that's anywhere but here.
Rich meets fellow lounge collectors, club owners and composers - with the shared passion for a music that's often overlooked or derided but, as the programme reveals, constantly being reinvented. New technology means that classic tracks are being rediscovered and shared as never before, producing fascinating advances and musical hybrids within lounge culture. Producer: Paul Bajoria.

TUE 11:00 Pieces of Britney (p09mw5q8)
3. The Fame Game
Pandora Sykes explores how her controversially-named debut single catapulted teenage Britney into stardom.

TUE 11:40 The Human Jukebox (m000zmfz)
Do you sing in the bath, whistle in the corridors, or hum nervously waiting on the phone?
Why do we sing to ourselves, do we even know we are doing it, and what about those infuriating phrases of music that we find stuck in our heads?
It seems that 90% of the population have experienced the mysterious playing of the 'Human Jukebox' - either whole tunes or short repetitive phrases. Whether to hide embarrassment, pass the time in a mundane job, or celebrate a happy moment, unconscious singing or whistling is a common trait.
Peter Curran, a self-hummer, explores a phenomenon which is under increased investigation.
As our understanding of the brain increases, so we can gather more understanding of how we relate to muisic, and that includes how so we select tunes from our internal jukebox.
Peter Curran, finds out from Professor Paul Robertson, founder of the Medici Quartet, the connection between music and emotion, and Dr Lauren Stewart, Reader in Psychology at Goldsmiths University, about her research project into the origination and nature of earworms, (or 'Ohrwurm' as they were originally described in German).
Pop producer Clive Langer, writer David Stafford and an assortment of human jukeboxes also share their compulsion to sing out loud.
Next time you find yourself whistling in the bath, maybe you'll understand more about what you are doing.

TUE 14:00 Tom Stoppard: A Life by Hermione Lee (m000n5zg)
Overnight Success
Hermione Lee's illuminating biography of one of our greatest playwrights, Tom Stoppard. Today, the writing and production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, and its astonishing reception.
Tom Stoppard is among British theatre’s giants and in Hermione Lee's evocative and immersive biography we come to know the man and his work. Since 1964 Stoppard has been writing for the theatre, big screen, television, and radio,. His plays are among the most studied of the last century.
Hermione Lee is one of our leading literary biographers, and with access to private papers, diaries and letters, interviews with the playwright's friends, and Stoppard himself she has created an intimate portrait of the writer. Here we learn of his formative years as a young child forced to flee Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia; growing up in India and then England; his activism and campaigning on behalf of Eastern European and Soviet prisoners of conscience; the influence of, and his friendship with Vaclav Havel., and always his work, the writing, rehearsing, casting and his ever present humour.
In his eighties Tom Stoppard remains at the forefront of British theatrical life. His most recent, personal and highly acclaimed play, Leopoldstadt, fell victim to Covid-19, when its run in the West End was suspended in March, 2020.

TUE 14:30 My Family and Other Ibex (b04gypsg)
Chemist and broadcaster Andrea Sella returns to the mountain landscape of his childhood to see how this icy world has changed over the past century.
In his father's study hangs a photograph that Andrea has always been told was taken by Vittorio Sella, a distant relation regarded by many as the greatest of all mountain photographers. It depicts the Cogne valley in north-western Italy, a place where Andrea, and his father before him, spent summers as a children hiking and climbing the surrounding peaks. Described as, "unspoiled" in guidebooks, on the surface the valley looks just as it did when Andrea was a child. But look closer and things have changed. After a visit to the archive of Vittorio's photographs where he finds a time capsule of the mountains of the late 19th century, he sets out to see the mountains today.
With Vittorio's photos in his backpack, Andrea hikes from Cogne up into the Gran Paradiso National Park in search of the region's most iconic creature - the Alpine Ibex. Forty years ago, Andrea saw these mountain goats all over the valley. A population that rose strongly through the 1980's has declined sharply, changes that scientists like Dr Achaz von Hardenberg are trying to understand. Evidence points to milder winters as having surprising impacts on Ibex numbers. Further along the path, Andrea meets Park Ranger Marco Grosa, who has lived here for 30 years, guarding his beloved Alpine plants from oblivious tourists. He's also noticed subtle changes to the distribution of flora and how they're creeping slowly up the mountain as the snow line recedes. Finally, Andrea meets mountain guide Alfredo Abram, who once took him on an ice climb as a child. Abram reveals that, today, he and his colleagues have all but thrown away their crampons; the ice Andrea remembers has melted. For villages like Cogne, dependent on melt water from the glaciers, there are worrying signs, as once-reliable springs dry up.
In this highly personal story about family, memory, and landscape, Andrea Sella explores the photographic and environmental legacy of Vittorio's work and learns first-hand how a world he once thought of as timeless, is being steadily transformed.

Queen's University Belfast
A funny and dynamic quiz show hosted by Steve Punt - this week from Queen's University Belfast with specialist subjects including History, Medicine and English and questions ranging from Emperor Vespasian to Ed Sheeran via handbags and haematoxylin.
The programme is recorded on location at a different University each week, and it pits three Undergraduates against three of their Professors in an original and fresh take on an academic quiz.
The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the Highbrow and Lowbrow round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of television, sport, and quite possibly Justin Bieber. In addition, the Head-to-Head rounds see students take on their Professors in their own subjects, offering plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both sides.
Other Universities featured in this series include Roehampton, Hull, Derby, Liverpool and St John's College Cambridge.

Discovery
BBC Arts Editor Will Gompertz investigates the art-works in our homes, and considers the stories they tell about our national identity.
Most of the nation's greatest works of art are in our museums and galleries, but there are also thousands of significant works – some valuable, some not - in homes across the country.
Will Gompertz discovers extraordinary stories behind the art-works on our domestic walls, and the tales they tell about our nation - an unwritten biography charting up and downs, highs and lows.
In the first programme of the series, he reveals the importance of discovery, hearing about the joy of uncovering apparently lost masterpieces, and acquiring works by chance.
Will meets an unemployed couple from Lincoln who believe they have tracked down - via the internet - works by Van Gogh, Manet and Cézanne. Will also finds out about the businessman who happened to become a good friend of Picasso, who gave him one of his prized plates. The plate sat in a drawer for 40 years, because its new owner thought it looked horrible. Now his son has re-discovered it. And there's the tale of home owner who happened to find a work by Francis Bacon on a wall - long hidden behind fitted furniture.

WED 22:30 Sam Simmons is Not a People Person (b085xfx5)
Italians
Comedian. Writer. Ex-Zoo Keeper. Bird Watcher. Definitely NOT a people person.
Sam and Henry are making a series about birds, and armed with Sam's 'Big Book of Birds' they're looking out for a different species in each episode.
Sadly, and despite Henry's very best efforts, Sam keeps being distracted by the people they run into. Each encounter sparks an investigation into Sam's past, because once they've sorted out his issues, then they'll really be able to focus on the bird-watching.
They're kicking off in Toronto, on the hunt for a fiddle warbler.
The unique talents of the multi-award winning Sam Simmons have landed.
“If you can imagine someone combining the rage of Basil Fawlty with the lunacy of Spike Milligan you are getting somewhere close to Simmons. Painfully frank, riotously inventive and a deserving award winner.” The Evening Standard (UK)

THU 14:00 Tom Stoppard: A Life by Hermione Lee (m000n47d)
Arcadia
Hermione Lee's illuminating portrait of one of our finest playwrights, Tom Stoppard. Today's episode looks at his moving mid-life play, Arcadia, premiered at the National Theatre in 1993.
Tom Stoppard remains at the forefront of British theatrical life. His most recent, personal and highly acclaimed play, Leopoldstadt, fell victim to Covid-19, when its run in the West End was suspended in March, 2020.

War
Most of the nation's greatest works of art are in our museums and galleries, but there are also thousands of significant works – some valuable, some not - in homes across the country.
BBC Arts Editor Will Gompertz discovers extraordinary stories behind the art-works on our domestic walls, and the tales they tell about our nation - an unwritten biography charting up and downs, highs and lows.
In this edition, Will focuses on art and war. There's the tale of the shipwrecked sailor, who turned to painting. Trude remembers her father, who perished in Auschwitz, through the only item left from her former home in Czechoslovakia - a large 19th century oil painting, an allegory of Jewish oppression.
Or there is the small stone with tiny carvings on it, owned by Nazrin who spent eight years in an Iranian jail. The stone was carved by a fellow inmate, who gave it to her as a token of affection, even though she could have been put to death for doing so. And there are paintings of Charles II and Lord Montagu, once arch enemies who ended up as allies, and an image of World War One battle-field, painted on the day that war ended. All are kept in domestic settings, and all have a story to tell.

FRI 14:00 Tom Stoppard: A Life by Hermione Lee (m000n6qg)
On Leopoldstadt
Hermione Lee's vivid biography of one of our finest playwrights Tom Stoppard concludes. Today, attention turns movingly to Leopoldstadt, his most recent play, where he reflects on his family and the Holocaust.
Sir Tom Stoppard remains at the forefront of British theatrical life. His most recent, personal and highly acclaimed play, Leopoldstadt, fell victim to Covid-19, when its run in the West End was suspended in March, 2020.

Fathers and Sons
Most of the nation's greatest works of art are in our museums and galleries, but there are also thousands of significant works – some valuable, some not - in homes across the country.
BBC Arts Editor Will Gompertz discovers extraordinary stories behind the art-works on our domestic walls or shelves, and the tales they tell about our nation - an unwritten biography charting ups and downs, highs and lows.
In this edition, Will looks at art passed from fathers to sons. Many art-works - and the tales behind them - are handed down in this way, and the programme includes the story of how Luke, son of celebrated artist Mark Gertler, began to understand his father's life through the art he now owns.
