SAT 02:30 Heaven and Earth: Le Ly Hayslip (b04h85ql)
Vietnamese writer Le Ly Hayslip reflects on her life and work shedding new light on her country's experience of the war.
Much of what we know about Vietnam is via the prism of western, primarily American, culture.
Two autobiographies written by the Vietnamese-American author offer an important insight into the war and its aftermath from a Vietnamese perspective.
Her first memoir in 1989, When Heaven and Earth Changed Places: A Vietnamese Woman's Journey from War to Peace, was followed in 1993 by Child of War, Woman of Peace.
Le Ly gives us unique access into her home in Vietnam to share her remarkable story of suffering, survival and her mission to heal the wounds between America and her homeland.
Le Ly was tortured in a South Vietnamese government prison for "revolutionary sympathies", raped by the VC, and fled to Saigon before fleeing to America. There she married unhappily, prospered, and returned to her village in Vietnam 13 years later. She has since set up the East Meets West foundation to reconcile Americans and Vietnamese, and the Global Village Foundation providing development assistance to rural Vietnam.
Director Oliver Stone shares his thoughts. He was so moved by Le Ly's story he made a film about her – 1993's Heaven and Earth. Says Stone:
'That she has been through so much and can talk honestly the way she does is the key to her book and the understanding of it and that's why I wanted to make the film – to understand someone who had suffered even more than I had. And I can learn from her.'

SAT 13:00 Pieces of Britney (p09mw4vt)
1. Quiet Plans
International superstar Britney Spears: the stories so far. Pandora Sykes pieces together what we know about Britney’s journey, and its place in pop culture history.
In this eight-part series for BBC Radio 4, Pandora traces Britney’s incredible life: from her hardscrabble childhood in rural Louisiana, to her coronation as the inaugural pop princess of the internet, navigating an insatiable celebrity gossip complex; through to a young mother on trial by the paparazzi.
Britney is a pop culture phenomenon. Pandora looks behind that mask - and beyond Britney herself - to explore how Britney became the most Googled person in the world, for almost seven years, and what it says, both then and now, about the entertainment industry, politics, sex and how we see women in the public eye.
Britney’s public struggles saw her placed in a conservatorship, in which she lost the right to control her finances and day to day life. Thirteen years later, and she is in court, pleading for this controversial legal arrangement to end. We will look at how Britney has been transformed from girl-next-door teen sensation to a mute symbol of a supposedly rotten system.
Pieces of Britney mixes documentary, archive and interviews to tell Britney’s remarkable story. It also features drama, written by playwright Katie Hims, to bring Britney and her extraordinary world to life.
Pieces of Britney will be a sympathetic portrayal of Britney, during a time of cultural reappraisal about how we treat women - famous, or otherwise. These are some of the stories that have been told about her - but The Narrative is hers to finish.

2. 2010 - 2014
Following on from Alan Bennett's bestselling, award-winning prose collections 'Writing Home' and 'Untold Stories', 'Keeping On Keeping On' is the third anthology to feature his unique observations, recollections and reminiscences.
In these entries, covering the years 2005 to 2014, Bennett looks back on a packed decade that included writing four highly-acclaimed plays – 'The Habit of Art', ‘People’, ‘Hymn’ and ‘Cocktail Sticks’, all of which premiered at the National Theatre – as well as the screenplays for the hit films of ‘The History Boys’ and ‘’The Lady in the Van’.
In addition, he reflects on his 25 years of friendship and collaboration with director Nicholas Hytner, life with his partner Rupert Thomas and, radical views notwithstanding, his status as ‘kindly, cosy and essentially harmless’ – a view which these diaries do their best to disprove.
Alan continues from 2010, from having ice cream poured down the back of his raincoat to dramatic experiences with pigs, boa constrictors and steaming – or not so steaming – manure.

Monsters
Fire breathing dragons are clearly something from legend, but what about a monster that lives in an ancient deep lake?
Sir David Attenborough reflects on a time when pre-eminent conservationist and naturalist Peter Scott was acquiring evidence to prove - or disprove - the existence of the Loch Ness Monster. No such giant creature has ever been found, but this is an intriguing tale of discovery.
David moves his story beyond the Scottish Highlands and into the Himalayas - where he reveals something very surprising.

True stories told live in the USA: Jenifer Hixson introduces tales of responding to unusual situations.
The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.
The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.
Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.
The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.

John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme was described by The Radio Times as "the best sketch show in years, on television or radio", and by The Daily Telegraph as "funny enough to make even the surliest cat laugh". Already the winner of a BBC Audio Drama Award and a Radio Academy Silver Award, John was named the 2016 Radio Broadcaster of the Year by the Broadcasting Press Guild for his work on Souvenir Programme.

Episode 2
Montag has quit his job as fireman, burning books for a living. He has a copy of the Bible, maybe the last one in existence, and he can't burn it.
He can't talk to his wife. His only hope is Faber, a retired English professor.
Fahrenheit 451 is the temperature at which paper burns.
It's Guy Montag's job to know these things: he's a fireman and he has burned books all his life. He used to love his job, doing this service for the public, but he can't do it anymore. As his life unravels he begins to question all his beliefs.
Ray Bradbury's cult classic was first published in 1953 but it imagines a world very like 2017, in which sophisticated mass media are used to pacify and control people; love is a commodity; attention spans are short and police hunts are live entertainment.
Poetic, dazzling and shocking: Ray Bradbury's vision of the future has become terrifyingly familiar.

John Wilson talks to athletes and coaches about the role pop music plays in their training. Technology has transformed the relationship between athletics and the role of music.
The advent of the MP3 player has enabled athletes and their coaches to build distinct playlists for specific areas of their training. When Victoria Pendleton is training for Gold, she listens to her Prodigy playlist with its 136 beats per minute a perfect tempo for her cycling.
John discovers why many people call music sport's "legal drug". In some research studies, it's been shown as increasing performance by 20 per cent while reducing an athlete's perception of effort by 10 per cent. Music blocks out fatigue-related symptoms such as the burning lungs, the beating heart and the lactic acid in the muscles enabling athletes to train harder and longer.
Coaches and athletes also talk about how even when you're training at the highest level, certain music tracks will enable you to carry on even up to the point of exhaustion.
Besides the science involved with the relationship between music and performance, we muse on what types of music deliver the best results.

In his letter, Phillips imagines that his young nephew might have to answer a history exam question about how the crisis of September 11th, 2001 determined American foreign and domestic policy. TUE 11:00 Pieces of Britney (p09mw5hn)
2. A Star is Born
Pandora Sykes tells the story of Britney's hardscrabble childhood and stint as a Disney child star.
Pandora looks behind that mask - and beyond Britney herself - to explore how Britney became the most Googled person in the world, for almost 7 years, and what it says, both then and now, about the entertainment industry, politics, sex and how we see women in the public eye.
Britney’s public struggles saw her placed in a conservatorship, in which she lost the right to control her finances and day to day life. Thirteen years later, and she is in court, pleading for this controversial legal arrangement to end. We will look at how Britney has been transformed from girl-next-door teen sensation to pop music’s Rapunzel, trapped in a supposedly rotten system.
Pieces of Britney mixes documentary, archive and interviews to tell Britney’s remarkable story. It also features drama, written by playwright Katie Hims, to bring Britney and her extraordinary world to life.
Pieces of Britney is a sympathetic portrayal of Britney, during a time of cultural reappraisal about how we treat women - famous, or otherwise.

TUE 14:30 The Mysterious Mr. Mercury (m000zcq6)
Freddie Mercury was a hugely charismatic and dynamic performer who cultivated a flamboyant stage personality, and yet in private he was extremely shy and retiring, and gave very few interviews. To mark the 20th anniversary of his death, Midge Ure goes in search of the real Freddie Mercury.
"Queen's" unique brand of stadium rock appealed to audiences across the globe. The band were the first to play in South American stadiums in the 1980s, they stole the show at Live Aid in 1985 and three hundred thousand fans flocked to see Freddie Mercury's final live performance at Knebworth Park in 1986.
Mercury's sexual ambiguity was a particular source of intrigue. In 1969 he began a long-term relationship with Mary Austin. Throughout his life he referred to her as his 'common law wife' and his 'only friend'. Yet the wedding ring Mercury was wearing on his death bed was given to him by his male partner, Jim Hutton.
In the years following his triumph at Live Aid, Freddie Mercury was rarely seen in the public eye. His health became a subject of speculation, even though his colleagues and friends continually denied there was anything wrong with him. Finally, on the day before he died, Freddie made a public statement confirming that he was HIV positive and he had AIDS.
With Freddie's ex-girlfriend Mary Austin, Queen guitarist Brian May, music producers Mike Moran and Reinhold Mack, Queen roadie Peter Hince, and Freddie's personal assistant Peter Freestone.

The University of Roehampton
A funny and dynamic quiz show hosted by Steve Punt - this week from the University of Roehampton with specialist subjects including Anthropology, Law and Linguistics and questions ranging from brachiation and morphemes to Xanadu via Kanye West and Sir Philip Sydney.
The programme is recorded on location at a different University each week, and it pits three Undergraduates against three of their Professors in an original and fresh take on an academic quiz.
The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the Highbrow and Lowbrow round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of television, sport, and quite possibly Justin Bieber. In addition, the Head-to-Head rounds see students take on their Professors in their own subjects, offering plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both sides.
Other Universities featured in this series include Queen's University Belfast, Hull, Derby, Liverpool and St John's College Cambridge.

WED 14:00 The 9/11 Letters (b0145ywg)
3. Joseph O'Neill
Five internationally acclaimed authors write letters to consider the consequences of the events of September 11th, 2001 for Britain, America and the world. Today's 9/11 Letter is by the Irish-Turkish writer Joseph O'Neill, who lives in Manhattan and whose award-winning novel, "Netherland", has been described as the "angriest, most exacting and most desolate work of fiction we've yet had about life in New York and London after the World Trade Center fell".
Rather than creating a character writing to an imagined recipient, as the other authors of The 9/11 Letters have, O'Neill remains steadfastly himself, and addresses his letter directly to Radio 4 listeners. He reflects on the way that, because of the mass coverage of the attack on the World Trade Centre, the distance between those who were there as eye witnesses and the rest of us collapsed with the Twin Towers. We were all 'there'. And so America's response to the attacks had profound implications for us all.

4. Lionel Shriver
Five internationally acclaimed writers consider the impact of the momentous events of September 11th, 2001. Ten years on, these authors use imaginative letters to reflect on the consequences for Britain, America and the world.
Today's 9/11 Letter is by the American novelist Lionel Shriver whose book 'We Need to Talk about Kevin' is now a modern classic. Shriver has given her letter the title 'Prepositions' and it delineates precisely the meanings of little words such as 'in', 'on', 'at' and 'near'. Her letter is to a woman whose husband died in 9/11, from a woman whose husband died on 9/11. Ten years on the consequences of those little differences on the lives of these friends are huge, and vastly different.

The dilapidated vehicle may need constant mechanical intervention, but it’s the Panteg residents’ lifeline. Elizabeth Proud’s ten-part adaptation is read by Harry himself.

THU 14:30 Can a Computer Write Shakespeare? (b0435kkd)
Trevor Cox asks whether computers can ever be truly creative.
An old adage says that a monkey sitting at a typewriter could eventually write Shakespeare. By the same token, could a computer ever create a work of art that could match Shakespeare's creativity?
Professor Trevor Cox of Salford University visits a London store to have a 3D model made of his head, something which until recently could only have been done by a sculptor. Very little human intervention is now needed to create a piece of art; just several cameras, some sophisticated software and a 3D printer.
But can computers produce music or poetry that will stand up to critical scrutiny? Trevor speaks to Professor Gustavo Díaz-Jerez who is involved in creating music software called Iamus, some of whose compositions have been performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. And he talks to Professor Simon Colton who is researching computer-generated poetry. Trevor tests out computer-created music and poetry on critics and academics.
Trevor considers whether computers could ever be truly creative in their own right, without any human input. He talks to Professor Mark D'Inverno about creative collaborations and to Professor Margaret Boden about the deeper philosophical issues raised by computer creativity.
With contributions also from Philip Ball, Tom Service, Professor Andrew Biswell and Martin Kratz.
Presented by Professor Trevor Cox.
Produced by Nick Holmes.

FRI 14:00 The 9/11 Letters (b01463kz)
5. Michael Morpurgo
Five internationally acclaimed writers consider the impact of the momentous events of September 11th, 2001. Ten years on, these authors use imaginative letters to reflect on the consequences for Britain, America and the world.
The final 9/11 Letter is by the former Children's Laureate, Michael Morpurgo. Among the more than one hundred books he has written is 'War Horse', the stage version of which this year won a Tony Award on Broadway, and is being made into a film by Stephen Spielberg.
The imagined writer of Michael Morpurgo's letter is Ginny, who, when the first plane smashed into the North tower was waiting on a bench in Central Park for her husband to return from breakfast with their son, their first meeting since a rift seven years previously. What happened on 11th September, 2001 rent many families - including Ginny's - asunder, yet it also brought people together. Michael Morpurgo's letter, which he has titled 'A Proper Family' movingly explores this ambiguity.

FRI 14:15 Welsh Fargo by Sir Harry Secombe (m000zfdl)
5. Thursday
On the day that a rival bus service is mooted, Dai makes a decision about Elspeth.
Harry Secombe wrote two books; ‘Twice Brightly’ in 1974 and the one serialised here, ‘Welsh Fargo’, in 1981.
It’s set in Panteg and tells the adventures of Dai Fargo, who drives the only bus that connects the remote mining village to Swansea. The dilapidated vehicle may need constant mechanical intervention, but it’s the Panteg residents’ lifeline. The satirical novel reflects Harry’s association with Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers, Michael Bentine and Eric Sykes.
Elizabeth Proud’s ten-part adaptation is read by Harry himself.
Producer: Enyd Williams
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in February 1982.

Even in the Internet age, there's still a huge romantic buzz about a great ship. And as she manoeuvres her vast bulk round the buoys and bars of our great ports both the sleek liner and the towering container vessel will usually draw a crowd.

Instant Gratification
Cheap credit and immediate online access to infinite availability have contributed to one of the defining characteristics of our time - the 'have it all' culture of being able to instantly gratify our wants and needs. But at what cost?
Dominic Arkwright explores the pleasures and pitfalls of instant gratification in the company of three speakers from very different walks of life. Representing the complete antithesis of the quick hit, tapestry weaver Jane Freear-Wyld shows Dominic a textile the size of a paperback, explaining how it takes 250 hours, or six working weeks, to make. Hers is a world away from the work of advertising creative director Matt Beaumont who arguably fuels our lust for not only jam today, but yesterday and tomorrow too. Meanwhile, Times columnist and writer Sathnam Sanghera, recently returned from a holiday in Mumbai, argues that it's the recent shift towards instant gratification that is fuelling India's rapidly rising standard of living, very different to an ethos that promises fulfilment neither now nor in in this life at all, but in the next one.
