SAT 02:30 Trollope (b03qf7r5)
This is the story of Anthony Trollope, an (apparently) utterly English and conservative writer, whose life cuts against what Barchester readers might expect of him.
He was a man raised by high born parents who had lost their money. Bullied in his teens, he joined the Post Office - taking work in Ireland to escape professional and financial difficulties.
Trollope fell in love with the Irish and the English literati even accused him of 'going native', yet he became one of England's best loved novelists. He wrote over 50 books, insisted that he only wrote for money, and penned many of them on trains en route to inspect rural post offices.
What kind of a man was he? And why does his work still resonate so strongly for readers across the English-speaking world. Is it, as WH Auden said, because he's one of the only English novelists to truly understand money and work?
Presented by the poet, Michael Symmons Roberts

Best-selling crime writer Mark Billingham has always been obsessed with the creative criminal minds of the past.
Over three hours, Mark sets out to detect the clues dropped in the BBC archives, as he brings a flavour of the magic of his favourite crime writers:
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Dame Agatha Christie
Raymond Chandler
PD James
Henning Mankell
Clues that reveal why their sleuthing creations - Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple, Philip Marlowe, Adam Dalgliesh and Kurt Wallander - are so enduring.
Having created his own flawed crime fighter, Detective Inspector Tom Thorne, Mark’s wrestled with the thorny issue of inventing a distinctive new voice amongst a myriad of detecting greats. What’s more important, devious plotting or debauched heroes, a killer in plain sight or rug-pulling twists?
In plundering the archive for answers, Mark has uncovered a hidden BBC radio detecting gem. Debuting in the late 1970s and running for a few seasons into the 1980s, it starred an actor who could be a lead in TV classic Cathy Come Home and voice an iconic children’s cartoon. It was penned by a writer that worked on TV police dramas Z Cars and Softly Softly.

It turns out that Justin also doesn't know much about Houdini - believing him to be an Italian woman. Luckily Dave, fearing the show may be a disaster causing him to miss out on the free lighter promised by the Mayor, is on hand to rewrite the play.
Mel persuades Rebecca to perform a radio first, a recreation of one of Houdini's most daring stunts. But will the truth of what really happened on Supermarket Sweep ever be revealed? Will the show restore the fortunes of the once fashionable seaside town? Will Dave get his free lighter?

The Pound in Your Pocket
Fifty years after it happened, Frances Cairncross looks back at the story of the Devaluation crisis of 1967.
It was one of the iconic phrases that will always be associated with Harold Wilson's premiership: in a TV broadcast, a day after his government had decided to reduce the value of the pound sterling by just over 14 percent against the dollar, Wilson assured the nation that, nevertheless, "the pound in your pocket" was still worth the same.
As a young journalist, Frances Cairncross covered the story - her father, Sir Alec Cairncross, was a senior Treasury official closely involved in the discussions before and the consequences following the November 18th move. He wrote in his diary "at 10.35, I saw the TV screen show a £1 note with DEVALUED printed across it..."

Lemn Sissay
From Henryk Gorecki to Prince.
Poet Lemn Sissay shares his castaway choices with Kirsty Young.
As a poet, writer and playwright, much of his work tells the story of his search for his birth parents. Born to a young Ethiopian woman who wanted him temporarily fostered while she completed her studies, he was with a family until he was 12. He would spend the next five years in a number of children's homes where he began to write. On leaving care at 17, he self-published his first book of poetry while on the dole.
Several poetry collections, plays and programmes for radio and TV followed and his work has taken him around the world.
Lemn was the first poet to be commissioned to write for the 2012 London Olympics and his success has also brought him two doctorates and an MBE for services to literature.
He is currently Chancellor of the University of Manchester. He takes writers' workshops for care-leavers and set up Culture World, the first black writers' workshop.

SUN 13:00 Animal Farm by George Orwell (m000yyl6)
George Orwell's landmark allegory about hypocrisy and corruption of power.
The iconic story of a pig-led revolution, and its eventual betrayal, was intended as a seering critique of Russian Communism. However, the book continued to be seen as a pertinent satire throughout the latter half of the 20th century and beyond.
This stirring reading is part of the BBC's Classic Novels series of unabridged audiobooks - join Napolean, Boxer and the rest of the animals in a rousing chant of "Four legs good, two legs bad"
Read by Roger Ringrose.
Producer: Ciaran Bermingham
SUN 16:30 In Our Time - Animal Farm (b07wgkz4)
Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss Animal Farm, which Eric Blair published under his pen name George Orwell in 1945.
A biting critique of totalitarianism, particularly Stalinism, the essay sprung from Orwell's experiences fighting Fascists in Spain: he thought that all on the left were on the same side, until the dominant Communists violently suppressed the Anarchists and Trotskyists, and Orwell had to escape to France to avoid arrest.
Setting his satire in an English farm, Orwell drew on the Russian Revolution of 1917, on Stalin's cult of personality and the purges. The leaders on Animal Farm are pigs, the secret police are attack dogs, the supporters who drown out debate with "four legs good, two legs bad" are sheep.
At first, London publishers did not want to touch Orwell's work out of sympathy for the USSR, an ally of Britain in the Second World War, but the Cold War gave it a new audience and Animal Farm became a commercial as well as a critical success.

SUN 18:45 Get Carter: The Bloody Chamber (b0bktw5y)
The Tiger's Bride
A father loses his daughter to the Beast in a game of cards. In his ruined palazzo, her new master asks her to disrobe.
When she refuses, he reveals his own true nature - the beast beneath the mask. But she discovers he is far more frightened of her than she is of him.
Another of Angela Carter's iconic collection of fairy stories - dramatised by Olivia Hetreed.
Beauty …. Hannah Genesius
Valet …. Jonathan Tafler
Father …. Ariyon Bakare
Clockwork Doll …. Jasmine Jones
At the time of writing The Bloody Chamber in the late 1970s, Angela Carter was disaffected by both sides of the feminist debate. She re-worked traditional fairy tales from her own unique, literary outsider’s point of view, putting women at the centre of the stories.
With their feisty heroines and orgiastic mash-up of beasts, shape-shifters and ghouls, Carter’s extraordinary tales are the most perfect example of her style, not just for her incomparable prose, but also in the dizzying twists and turns of perception, fantasy and myth.
Controversially influenced by De Sade, she embraced the erotic, explored our deepest and darkest urges, and subverted the roles of hunter and prey, master and mistress so that, instead of male sexuality, it is the female that becomes transgressive and powerful.
Dramatised by Olivia Hetreed.

2005
Alan Bennett reads extracts from his diaries.
Following on from Alan Bennett's bestselling, award-winning prose collections 'Writing Home' and 'Untold Stories', 'Keeping On Keeping On' is the third anthology to feature his unique observations, recollections and reminiscences.
In these entries, covering the years 2005 to 2014, Bennett looks back on a packed decade that included writing four highly-acclaimed plays – 'The Habit of Art', ‘People’, ‘Hymn’ and ‘Cocktail Sticks’, all of which premiered at the National Theatre – as well as the screenplays for the hit films of ‘The History Boys’ and ‘’The Lady in the Van’.
In addition, he reflects on his 25 years of friendship and collaboration with director Nicholas Hytner, life with his partner Rupert Thomas and, radical views notwithstanding, his status as ‘kindly, cosy and essentially harmless’ – a view which these diaries do their best to disprove.
Today, Alan’s play 'The History Boys' has its last production at the National Theatre and he laments the many abandoned pieces he has written.
Abridged and produced by Gordon House.

Phil Tinline mines the archives to trace the story of 'disinformation' - navigating the slippery history of such incidents as the Zinoviev Letter, the Reichstag Fire, the Moscow Trials, the allegations that the US used germ warfare in the Korean War, British operations in Northern Ireland and the CIA's attempt at a pornographic movie.
He tracks the origins of disinformation to struggles between Tsarists and revolutionaries in pre- and post-Revolutionary Russia - a period which produced the notorious forgery The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, which was championed by the Nazis. It was a milieu that shaped the Bolsheviks' ruthless approach to information and disinformation - a mindset they carried with them from the underground to the Kremlin.
Amid the rise of totalitarianism, leading thinkers on left and right alike were worrying about the 'End of Truth' over 70 years before today's furores. Anxiety about truth and its enemies seems to flare up at times when orthodoxies are falling apart - political uncertainty is rife and people become unusually open to the comforting certainty of extreme ideas.
So - if 'fake news' is not as new as advertised, might we have something to learn from this history? Phil uses this long history of deliberate attacks on truth to identify tricks and techniques that are still in use today, drawing on the expertise of Lawrence Bittman, the ex-deputy chief of the Czechoslovak disinformation department.
Speakers include: Gill Bennett, Lawrence Bittman, Richard Evans, Peter Pomeranzev, Robert Service, Lyndsey Stonebridge, Calder Walton, Kathryn Weathersby

2006
Today, Alan reflects on how much easier it is to get married than to get a Camden parking permit.
Abridged and produced by Gordon House.

TUE 14:30 George Orwell Back at the BBC (b09cvyx3)
Sara Parker documents the creation by eminent sculptor Martin Jennings of an eight-foot-high statue of the 1984 author, George Orwell. The programme was first broadcast to coincide with the statue’s unveiling on 7th November 2017.
For the past 18 months, BBC producer Sara has paid regular visits to Martin’s Oxford studio to follow the progress of the statue from a small maquette to the larger than life likeness that will look down on visitors, passers-by and BBC employees alike from its plinth outside New Broadcasting House in central London.
Orwell worked for the Indian service of the BBC during the Second World War. Eton-educated, he had already written his first novel informed by five difficult years in the Indian Imperial police force in Burma. By then, he had also fought in the Spanish Civil War where he nearly died after being shot in the neck. After leaving the BBC in 1943, he went on to write about and champion the disadvantaged in society and expose political injustice and tyranny. Inscribed on the wall behind the statue is Orwell’s quote, "Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear".
As a sculptor, Martin Jennings has a reputation for public work throughout the UK - from statues of the famous such as poet John Betjeman, hat clamped to his head, hurrying across the concourse of St Pancras Station, to pioneers such as plastic surgeon Archibald McIndo outside a Sussex hospital where his father was one of his first patients. The humanity of his work is also captured in statues such as a commemoration of Sheffield’s women steel workers and one of Mary Seacole to mark the abolition of the slave trade.
The programme reflects Martin’s research into Orwell, his life and writings including interviews with two people still alive who actually knew the author – his adopted son Richard Blair and 100 year old Anne Olivier Bell (nee Popham) to whom Orwell proposed after his first wife died. Other contributors include Baroness Whitaker, widow of former Labour MP Ben Whitaker who worked tirelessly during the final years of his life to ensure that a statue of his schoolboy hero became a reality.
Readings by Ian Masters from 1984 with thanks to the estate of the late Sonia Brownell Orwell

Brothers in Arms
An exploration into the enduring appeal of the Dire Straits classic, Brothers in Arms.
Although thought to have been written by Mark Knopfler in response to the Falklands war in the mid 80's, it's a piece that people now associate with many other conflicts ; military, personal and social.
Dire Straits bass player, John Illsley explains why it remains such a special piece for the band, while Marines chaplain, Nigel Beardsley, recalls the important part it's played in the lives of so many soldiers in Iran and Afghanistan and why it's now often heard at military funerals.
The Irish playwright, Sam Millar describes why he based a very personal play around the song and Snuffy Walden, music director of the hit American TV show, The West Wing, talks about how the series writer, Aaron Sorkin insisted on it being used in its entirety during a crucial episode.
Prof Alan Moore of Surrey University explains how it's Knopfler's brilliant use of harmony that gives the song the sense of yearning that has made it into one of the most enduring pop songs of the last century.

The Antiquary
Richard Wilson stars as The Antiquary, a man who hoards secrets as well as treasures. Will his knowledge allow Lovel to marry his secret love? With David Tennant as Walter Scott.
The Antiquary (1816) is a novel by Sir Walter Scott about an amateur historian, archaeologist and collector of items of dubious antiquity. Although he is the eponymous character, he is not necessarily the hero, as many of the characters around him undergo far more significant journeys or change. Instead, he provides a central figure for other more exciting characters and events – on which he provides a sardonic commentary.
This is Scott's gothic novel, redolent with family secrets, stories of hidden treasure and hopeless love, with a mysterious, handsome, young man, benighted aristocracy and a night-time funeral procession to a ruined abbey. The romance and mystery is counterpoised by some of Scott's more down-to-earth characters, and grittily unromantic events.

Scott wrote in an advertisement to the novel that his purpose in writing it, similar to that of his novels Waverley and Guy Mannering, was to document Scottish life and manners of a certain period - in this case the last decade of the 18th century.

3. Third Time's A Charm
Broadcaster Steve Penk digs out a final batch of some of the funniest clips of live radio mistakes - with exclusive access to his own collection of audio material from around the world.
Radio bloopers have been around for as long as radio itself. They’re mainly endearing and add a humanising element to the radio and to the presenters on it. A blooper is defined as an embarrassing public blunder, but as long as it's someone else's mistake, most of us are quite capable of getting past the embarrassment to enjoy the humour.
The immediacy of live-to-air radio is part of its strength, but also very exposing. If there's a slip of the tongue, it's broadcast into the ether moments later, especially in the early days of broadcast radio when almost everything was done live on the air. There have been some celebrated 'bloopers' over the years - from 'colourful' language, to laughing fits, technical glitches to amusing mispronunciations.
Includes Emily Buchanan introducing a blooper reel from ‘A World In Your Ear’.

WED 14:30 One Day In... Leeds West Indian Carnival (b04jm9n3)
The Leeds West Indian Carnival began in 1967 as one man's cure for his homesickness. It now attracts up to 150,000 visitors every year, generating an estimated ten million pounds for the local economy. In this programme, dancers, designers, police and parade-goers all tell their stories as we follow their progress, from sunrise to sunset.
Costume designer Hughbon Condor trained as an engineer, and it shows. One of his creations consists of giant bat wings which, when unfurled, release lots of tiny bats all dancing around the "parent." Meanwhile, his son Sephbon is busy constructing his own creation, hoping to outdo his father and be crowned Carnival King. As the last minute preparations and costume repairs are executed, stall holders are getting ready to sell succulent jerk chicken for eight hours non-stop. And, as the carnival beat begins to rise, Chief Inspector Matt Davison is briefing his officers on how to safely and successfully police the heady mix of spices, soca, drum and bass, and alcohol.
One Day in Summer was recorded on August 25th 2014, and follows the stories of designers, dancers, chefs and carnival-goers as they take to the streets of Chapeltown in Leeds.

Elvis McGonagall: Full Tartan Jacket
Elvis McGonagall performs the pick of a year’s biting and savagely funny satire in a blend of provocative verse and politically savvy stand-up comedy. It's imbued with his customary searing wit, wordplay and anarchic invective.
Pulling no punches, Elvis directs his scurrilous diatribes at the powers-that-be from Westminster to Waitrose, taking aim at the injustices of our septic isle and beyond. Stockpiling and the pickiness of cats, celebrity branding, the nature of truth, some bloke called Trump, the Prime Minister and Mr Benn, Government rules, ecotricity, Samuel Pepys - it’s all there. There’s even a love poem.
Full Tartan Jacket presents the prime cuts from the work of a comic poet at the top of his game – all current and bang on target. Join this World Poetry Slam Champion and Saturday Live alumnus as he bellows into the void in exasperation at the world, from the Gracelands Caravan Park somewhere near Dundee.
Recorded remotely in front of a virtual audience.

The Talisman
The Talisman is the finale of Scott's novels set during the crusades but this one features the dying dog days of the Third Crusade. Richard the Lionheart is de facto leader but the military expedition has ground to a halt and the allies are getting itchy feet. They are sick of Richard's over-bearing leadership and, to make it worse, very few of them still believe Jerusalem can be reconquered.
To the modern reader this must be a rather recondite setting. Beyond the jousting and the knightliness, how much do we care about the crusades anymore? And that's without opening the can of worms as to whether the West had any more right to be there then than it does now.
Jonathan Myerson, the adapter, wondered how to update this story and find a modern parallel to this situation. And then it came to him: Occupy London in 2011. Those protestors started with the same, almost ecstatic belief in the possibility of change. They aimed to seize the holiest of places – the London Stock Exchange – but were beaten back and forced to set up camp outside. As the original crusaders came to loathe the heat and insect life in their desert encampment outside Jerusalem, the protestors of Occupy came to much the same conclusion – as winter set in – about sleeping on the cold, wet flagstones of St.Paul's Churchyard. And, in much the same way, the competing groups started to feel it was time to pack up and go home.
So, new listeners will follow Scott's original story of conspiracy and counter-conspiracy and, most important of all, star-crossed lovers but will hear new resonances in this old tale.

Today, Alan gives us unexpected revelations about Gordon Brown, John Sergeant and a lost pullover

THU 14:30 Going To Pieces In The Box (b00p61zg)
More art - typically sentimental, traditional art - has made its way into more homes via the jigsaw puzzle than virtually any other medium - and while it has since become the purveyor of comforting landscapes to the masses, it started life an an educational tool championed by the likes of philosopher John Locke. In 1760 London mapmaker John Spilsbury mounted one of his maps on hardboard and cut into pieces to help children learn geography. "Going to Pieces in the Box" will tell the story of how, since then, it has become such a core feature of childhoods across the world.
Along the way we'll hear how jigsaws hit their first major peak in the Great Depression, when ten million a week sold to families looking for cheap pastimes and how they were used by immigration officers on Ellis Island to determine who should be allowed in to the land of the free. Also we'll explore how popular culture has flirted with the jigsaw, in novels and films as diverse as "Mansfield Park", "Citizen Kane" and most powerfully Perek's novel "Life: A User's Manual", and hear from academics and enthusiasts such as Margaret Drabble to help explain the jigsaw's great allure.
This colourful and lively feature will show how jigsaws continue to be incredibly popular, having evolved into 3D puzzles and of course made their way onto the internet, where no young children's games site is without one.

George Orwell
Whilst at school, a young Alan Johnson was given some money by a teacher and told to go and buy four copies of any book for the school library. He headed down the Kings Road in Chelsea, stopping only for a sly cigarette along the way. Having already read 'Animal Farm', he picked 'Keep the Aspidistra Flying' and yearned for the life of lead character Gordon Comstock.
In conversation with Matthew Parris, former Home Secretary Alan Johnson explains why Orwell was crucial to his education and political development. He's surprised to learn that Orwell is not on the National Curriculum, and insists that Orwell would have hated I.D. cards. They're joined by Jean Seaton, Professor of Media History at the University of Westminster and Chair of the Orwell Prize.
Orwell was in the news recently when the outgoing Director-General of the BBC, Mark Thompson, turned down a proposal to erect a statue of George Orwell outside BBC Broadcasting House, reportedly telling Joan Bakewell that it was 'far too Left-wing an idea.'

When did you first notice that not everyone was like you ? For American satirist Joe Queenan, growing up in an Irish American neighbourhood of Philadelphia, it was the moment he walked into an Italian cheese shop. Poet Elvis MacGonagall, sole resident of the Graceland caravan park outside Dundee, dodges the question by writing a brilliant poem that rhymes foreign with sporran. And Amanda Mitchison recounts an episode in a Cairo market where she was continually shortchanged in her efforts to buy chicken breast. In short she says, to be foreign is always to be the fool, unsure how to dress, to speak, and to buy a decent piece of chicken.
New writing and discussion on the subject of Foreign, what it means and why it matters, chaired by Dominic Arkwright. The programme is produced by Miles Warde.
