My Own Private Utopia
How, and where, and with whom, do you want to lead your life?
Most of us don't ask ourselves this very often, preferring instead to slide along, taking what may be acceptable and conventional as enough. But what if you do pursue an answer, as one of our guests, Tobias Jones, is trying to do, in a ten acre wood?
The full title of Thomas More's work Utopia included the words, "A truly golden little book, no less beneficial than entertaining, of a republic's best state ...." But has Utopia ever been achieved? Rob Penn and Amanda Mitchison think definitely not. The problem is the presence of other people, and so a private Utopia is the best that can ever be achieved. Rob Penn, presenter of a recent tv documentary about building the perfect bike, outlines very clearly what it means to him.
But Tobias Jones, author of the Dark Heart of Italy and Utopian Dreams, argues very clearly that the woodland life he is now establishing with his family and guests should not be so easily dismissed. As Kurt Vonnegut said, "Human beings will be happier not when they cure cancer or get to Mars ... but when they find ways to inhabit primitive communities again."
Presented by Dominic Arkwright.

SAT 09:00 The Rudest Man in Britain (b03rxc77)
The Rudest Man in Britain excavates the archives from the perspective of Gilbert Harding - a well-loved radio personality who went on to achieve wider TV exposure as star of long-running panel shows such as 'What's My Line?' once watched by millions.
Clever, amusing and often outrageous, Harding was a familiar voice of wireless who became a pioneer of popular TV. But behind the public persona, there was a troubled and conflicted character.
To create a profile of Gilbert Harding's life and sample his broadcasting work Simon Fanshawe draws on Stephen Wyatt's play Dr Brighton and Mr Harding, in which Harding (played by Roger Allam) wrestles with his inner demons and fantasies, knowing also that he is in increasingly poor health (hence his reason for moving to the coast to embrace 'Dr Brighton').
Simon samples excerpts from:
* Round Britain Quiz,
* What's My Line?
* The Brains Trust
* A complete edition of Twenty Questions – which, as a format, still stands up well.
He also revisits Harding's seminal 1960 BBC Face to Face TV interview with John Freeman, where he broke down on camera when the questioner touched a nerve.
Simon Fanshawe explores the development of many now familiar formats on Radio and TV - and assembles a fascinating and rounded portrait of this tortured but much loved polymath.

SAT 13:00 The Last Seaside Orchestra (b01knsjz)
This is the story of the last professional seaside orchestra in Britain.
Once, classical music had a natural home in holiday resorts across the country: 'Hastings and New Brighton had their own symphony orchestras
The young Malcolm Sargent started out as conductor of the orchestra in Llandudno; Wagner was played in Whitby.' (The Times). But Scarborough Spa Orchestra led the way, based in their magnificent Victorian building on the town's sweeping South Bay.
100 years later they're still there. At a time when orchestras struggle for audiences, conductor Matthew Rowe goes to Scarborough to experience for himself the unique connection between this small group of musicians and the thousands of tourists who come each summer just to hear them play.
The leading musicians, conductors and singers of the 20th century all performed at Scarborough, with names such as violinist Max Jaffa and conductor Alick Maclean drawing huge crowds through the decades. The orchestra plays nine concerts a week, and still generates that kind of anticipation and interest among the audience members.
Matthew believes that a conductor must do more than simply turn his back to the room and perform; he must break down barriers and make classical music less daunting for those who are not aficionados. He's intrigued to know the secret of the Spa Orchestra's warm relationship with their audience.
Recorded on location in Scarborough during the orchestra's 99th summer season, Matthew Rowe traces this musical survival story.

Poets
John Cooper Clarke
From Jerry Lee Lewis to Doris Day.
Poet John Cooper Clarke, shares his castaway choices with Lauren Laverne.
John first achieved fame with his poetry during the punk rock era of the late 1970s. Despite some initially hostile receptions from audiences waiting for the Sex Pistols or the Buzzcocks, he acquired a cult status, going on to release five albums of his poetry set to music by former Joy Division producer Martin Hannett.
By early 1980s, he was also in the grip of a heroin addiction which would see him write very little for over a decade. He cleaned up in the early 90s after marrying his second wife, Evie, and having a daughter, Stella.
His star began to rise again in 2007 when one of his poems was used in an episode of The Sopranos and others were included on the GCSE syllabus, which led to collaborations with artists like Plan B and Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in July 2019.

Poet and translator WN Herbert and sound artist and editor of Poetry Wales Zoe Skoulding share their experiences of worldwide poetry festivals and performance.
They tell us how in many Eastern European countries, poetry festivals attract people in their thousands - particularly to the town of Struga in Macedonia which has become one of the most important poetry festivals in the world. Despite the fall of Yugoslavia, the war in Bosnia, the Kosovo crisis and the political and ethnic clashes in the whole of the region - this particular poetry festival attracts hundreds of international poets all wanting to take part. We discover why.
We also hear why in South America, poets from all over the world gather not only to share their work, but each year decide to "bury" a philosophical thought that the poets feel the world can do without. But we also hear how, in places like China and Burma, poetry can be seen as subversive and is only shared with great risk of imprisonment or torture. Bill Herbert and Zoe Skoulding share all this and more - as they take us on a personal tour to experience poetry, performance and festivals that celebrate this sometimes marginalised art form.
Presented by Bill Herbert.

SUN 18:45 Get Carter: The Bloody Chamber (b0bkr5p6)
The Erl-King
A hapless maid wandering deeper into the woods encounters the bewitching presence of the Erl-King, the presiding spirit of the forest.
She willingly enters his woodland lair and lies with him. But when she discovers that he plans to turn her into a bird and imprison her with the rest of his aviary, she must somehow break the spell.
Another of Angela Carter's iconic collection of fairy stories - dramatised by Olivia Hetreed.
Erl-King ...... Ariyon Bakare
Lover ...... Rakie Ayola
Goblin ...... Jasmine Jones
At the time of writing The Bloody Chamber in the late 1970s, Angela Carter was disaffected by both sides of the feminist debate. She re-worked traditional fairy tales from her own unique, literary outsider’s point of view, putting women at the centre of the stories.
With their feisty heroines and rgiastic mash-up of beasts, shape-shifters and ghouls, her extraordinary tales are the most perfect example of her style, not just for her incomparable prose, but also in the dizzying twists and turns of perception, fantasy and myth.
Controversially influenced by De Sade, she embraced the erotic, explored our deepest and darkest urges, and subverted the roles of hunter and prey, master and mistress so that, instead of male sexuality, it is the female that becomes transgressive and powerful.

3. The Brotherhood
Charlotte and Lillian are back, spending time together as part of a Befriend the Elderly scheme. They may bicker about everything from signs of dementia to the appeal of Harry Styles, but underneath it’s clear they are two kindred spirits. Two selfish, self-absorbed spirits, but ones who mirror and rely on each other nonetheless.
Very nearly 30, Charlotte is still living at home with her parents and chronically unable to figure out what to do with her life. Beneath her attempt at do-gooding is barely disguised despair. She's terrified she is no good. Useless. Unloveable. She looks to Lillian to provide some meaning to her life - if she can help to improve Lillian’s life somehow, she’d feel a lot better about her own. And there’s all the kudos and social media likes that come with charity work - not to mention the lure of Lillian's large spare room.
Charlotte is forced to intervene when Lillian gets in too deep with a group from the local church with a suspicious – and all-too familiar – agenda.
When Lillian’s new friends turn up at the door, she and Charlotte hide. Until they’re caught red-handed, that is.
Lillian realises there’s nothing for it but to claim Charlotte is holding her hostage.

The ever-popular children's writer and illustrator Shirley Hughes published a magazine article recalling the dances she attended as a teenager growing up in wartime West Kirby.
Readers responded with their own memories of similar dances in other parts of the country. Amongst them was the writer and journalist, Philip Purser. But he didn't just remember similar dances: he remembered exactly the same ones.
Now, over 70 years after Shirley and Philip danced the foxtrot and joined in a Paul Jones or an Excuse-Me dance together, they are reunited for the very first time, not only in recalling these Saturday night dances but with the promise of taking to the dance-floor one last time.
Felicity Finch, herself a keen dancer, hears from Philip and from Shirley about their memories of the dances and the music, the clothes and shoes, and about the heated atmosphere of teenage courtship in West Kirby as nearby Liverpool blazed in the Blitz. She tracks down the girl whom Shirley envied above all others and whom Philip most desired - Joan Brotherton, now also in her late 80s - and hears her side of the story.
Finally, she reunites Philip and Shirley for what may be a last Excuse Me Dance.

999 - Which Service Do You Require?
999 was the first emergency telephone number in the world when it was launched on June 30th, 1937. Within the first week, more than a thousand calls were made to the service with one burglar arrested less than five minutes after a member of the public had dialled 999. Impressive stuff. But there were teething problems...
In the early days, only those wealthy enough to own a telephone could hope to avail of the service. Exchange room operators complained of stress caused by the raucous buzzers which alerted them to 999 calls. Advancing technology connected with the system began to alter the relationship between public and police. Almost unbelievably in hindsight, the 999 service wasn't made fully available across the nation until 1976.
Exactly 80 years after it was introduced, Ian Sansom dials up the remarkable story of our three digit emergency number. Between rare archive, real life-or-death emergencies and interviews with call handlers on the front line, Ian takes a personal look at the evolution of 999 and asks what the future holds for this pioneering British institution.

TUE 14:00 Golden Hill by Francis Spufford (b08q60pt)
2. Walking
New York, a small town on the tip of Manhattan Island, 1746. One rainy evening, a charming and handsome young stranger, fresh off the boat from England, pitches up to a counting house on Golden Hill Street, with a suspicious yet compelling proposition. He has an order for a thousand pounds in his pocket that he wishes to cash. But can he be trusted?
This is New York in its infancy, a place where a young man with a fast tongue can invent himself afresh, fall in love, and find a world of trouble.
Francis Spufford says of his book, "Golden Hill is just a novel. More specifically, it's an eighteenth century novel. It's set in the winter of 1746, in what was then the very small British colonial town of New York; but it's also written like a novel from the eighteenth century. So the story of the charming but unreliable-seeming young Mr Smith, who turns up from London with a document in his pocket that may be a fraud or may be worth a fortune, is as hectically stuffed with event as it would have been if Fielding or Smollett had written it.
"Eighteenth-century readers expected to get their money's worth, and Golden Hill contains (among other things) a mystery, a political intrigue, a love story, a ball, a duel, a high-stakes card game, a trial, a dash of horror, a play-within-a-play, some surprisingly graphic sex and a rooftop chase. As a slow writer, I enjoyed working on something that runs fast. It was intricate fun devising and winding up the book's clockwork. But I hope it's also a story that feels alive, and makes the past feel alive too, while Mr Smith runs for his life, and the snow falls on Manhattan Island."

TUE 14:30 In Godzilla's Footsteps (b01y1gxj)
Godzilla, the giant green lizard which levels Tokyo skyscrapers with a sweep of his enormous tail, was the response of Japan's film makers in the 1950s to the national trauma of the atomic attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
In the wake of 2011's Tsunami, the nation's artists have been similarly inventive in turning the disaster into art. The "post 3/11 movement" takes inspiration from the devastating images of flooded cities, smoking nuclear reactors and grief stricken victims which emerged after the earthquake and tsunami.
Mark Rickards meets artists and musicians who have turned the disaster into art, and asks whether they have found a suitable response to the devastating events which shook Japan.
27-year-old installation artist Tsubasa Kato volunteered to visit Fukushima to help clear up the rubble. With the help of 300 local residents who had lost their homes, Kato recently constructed a three storey lighthouse from the rubble of ruined houses and schools. The lighthouse now stands looking out over the sea, as a symbol of what happened in March 2011.
The performance artists Chim Pom, a six person collective, donned protective radioactive suits and visited the devastated Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, holding up symbolic referees' red cards in front of the cracked dome of the nuclear reactor. Videoed for a performance art piece they admitted they were frightened of the radiation levels but "wanted to respond to these life changing events by placing ourselves in the middle of the radiation zone."
The video artist Kota Takeuchi took a job at the devastated nuclear plant. His work includes a video which shows a worker pointing an accusing finger at the video camera which keeps watch over the site. Later he called a press conference to harangue Tepco, operator of the plant about the conditions of workers inside.
With contributions from Tsubasa Kato, Chim Pom, Kota Takeuchi amongst others, Mark Rickards explores Japan's artistic response to the tragedy.

Broadcaster Steve Penk digs out some of the funniest clips of live radio mistakes and provides listeners with exclusive access to his own collection of audio material from around the world.
Radio bloopers have been around for as long as radio itself. They’re mainly endearing and add a humanising element to the radio and to the presenters on it.
A blooper is defined as an embarrassing public blunder, but as long as it's someone else's mistake, most of us are quite capable of getting past the embarrassment to enjoy the humour. The immediacy of live-to-air radio is part of its strength, but also very exposing. If there's a slip of the tongue, it's broadcast into the ether moments later, especially in the early days of broadcast radio when almost everything was done live on the air.
There have been some celebrated 'bloopers' over the years - from 'colourful' language, to laughing fits, technical glitches to amusing mispronunciations.
Includes an episode of Jonathan Hewat’s ‘Can I Take That Again’.

In the last of the current series, the unlikely trio of actor Don Warrington, playwright Patrick Marber and writer/producer Peter Curran lie in the dark together and discuss life's great mysteries.
What did medieval children build in the sand when on a beach holiday? What is the definition of heavy breathing? Did someone, 400 years ago, change Shakespeare's tragic words spoken by King Lear for a laugh, and to wind-up older actors forever?
Don Warrington played student lodger Philip opposite Leonard Rossiter's Rigsby in the classic TV sitcom Rising Damp. After a successful career on stage and screen, he now finds himself laying on the floor and trying to get to sleep on a pull-out mattress while being talked at by two people, uncomfortable in their Bunk Bed.

THU 14:00 Golden Hill by Francis Spufford (b08q767w)
4. Awakening

You Can’t Do That Anymore
Mike Wilson has some key loves in his life – his sourdough starter, his wife and children (obviously), but also the cult rock group of his formative years - The Smiths. Jangly and heartfelt it’s perfect music for the tortured soul; albeit one with a comfortable and privileged life. Until that is, Cat comes crashing in with her questions. Are some of Morrissey’s more recent statements problematic and if so, can we separate the arts from the artist? What else can’t we enjoy anymore? A rummage through his parent’s attic suggests LOTS, it turns out. Mike’s dilemma contorts him with anxiety as the family pick their way through this new minefield. Can we ‘offset’ liking problematic things?

Scrambled EGG
Comedy duo Egg - Anna Leong Brophy and Emily Lloyd-Saini - write and star in this brand-new comedy special, exploring what it means to be mixed race, and their very different experiences growing up in the UK.
An increasingly surreal dinner date turns into a trip down memory lane for the pair, as a curt waitress guides them grudgingly through some of their formative mixed-race memories.
Through break-out sketches, the duo narrowly avoid coming to blows with streetwise teenage schoolgirls Jacanda and Malika on the streets of north west London, culturally appropriate their own cultural heritage in a Portakabin in Nottingham, and befuddle renowned Race and Socio-Political expert Professor Jojo Mojojo with a simple question. All the while waiting for their main course to arrive.
Anna and Emily also talk to their real-life Mums, who share their experiences on what it meant to bring up a mixed race daughter in the 90s - and whether the girls really were the charming little angels they claim to have been.
Can the mixed-race experience really be defined in a single comedy special? The Egg girls aren’t sure, but they take a crack at it in Scrambled Egg.

FRI 14:00 Golden Hill by Francis Spufford (b08q7l8n)
5. Chief
