Speaking to the first rappers to use their own Aboriginal language, Mark Rickards finds that the traditions of dreamtime storytelling have been reinvigorated by rap music. Although the style originated in the USA, Aboriginal youth have adapted it to suit their own needs. It can be used to tell the stories of life in the outback or life in the city, and to represent the often unheard voices of the Aboriginal people.
Mark visits an Aboriginal radio station which has helped bring indigenous rap to a wider audience, and looks at the challenges of getting mainstream recognition.
Today younger rappers are talking about a brighter future for the Aboriginal people, and their music shows hopeful signs for the gradual evolution of Australia itself.

Lucy Porter: Back in the Family Way
Following her previous, very popular In the Family Way shows, Radio 4 favourite Lucy returns with another examination of domestic life, covering everything from the dramatic to the dreary.
This time, Lucy looks at the effects of the pandemic on our relationships with family, friends and neighbours. The last year has been hard on people who were separated from their nearest and dearest, but it’s also been no picnic for those who were locked up with their loved ones.
Home schooling, working from the kitchen table, zoom quizzes with cousins, clapping with the neighbours - Lucy explores all the things that have brought us together, while also driving us apart. We look forward to the year 2041 and ponder what they’ll make of it in the future.
Talented comedian and impressionist Luke Kempner is on hand again to help Lucy bring her thoughts to life. As always, he displays his range of comic voices, including an impressive impersonation of Lucy’s next door neighbour Yvonne.
Back In The Family Way was recorded at Lucy’s local village hall, with a socially distanced audience of her family, friends and neighbours. Let’s see if any of them are still speaking to her after this show.

The Medium Is the Message
Generation X author Douglas Coupland explores the ideas, sound and vision of media seer Marshall McLuhan who in the 1960s coined the phrases "the medium is the message" and "the global village".
Marshall McLuhan was the first great prophet of what would become digital mass media and indeed the global media village - a thinker and writer of near supernatural foresight.
Trained as a literary scholar, throughout his career McLuhan not only examined the relationship between form and content in the media itself, offering dazzling arguments for the importance of medium over content, but anticipated the very idea of online networks, virtual reality, multiple interfaces, social media and most importantly of all, how new technologies rewire us by stealth, endlessly transforming our identities and our communities. "We shape our tools and thereafter our tools shape us," he said.
Drawing on cutting-edge thinking about networks and cybernetics, McLuhan foresaw a fully wired, connected world, which would bring to an end the isolated consumption of print. New cross-border (effectively online) communities would form, breaking old political barriers, creating genuinely new kinds of electronic identity. But with this McLuhan offered a warning: older ideas of privacy and the self would evaporate under new media he said, leading to the rise of what he called 'discarnate' man - the lost, disembodied user extended across an unrelenting, unforgiving electronic global nervous system.
McLuhan's ideas seem more prescient than ever. As Douglas Coupland puts it: 'The future has never happened so quickly, to so many people, in such an extreme way - just as Marshall predicted, an uncanny prophet of our own digital age.'
Contributors include novelist Tom McCarthy, DJ Spooky, Andrew McLuhan, biographer Philip Marchand, the media theorists Shannon Mattern and Bernard Dionysus Geoghegan, Zak Kyes the graphic designer, philosopher James Garvey, filmmaker Jonathan Meades and former network engineer Tung-Hui Hu, who has written on McLuhan and 1970s guerrilla television.

It begins with a summons from Queen Catherine Parr: "Master Shardlake, I would welcome your personal counsel on a case..." It ends with the sinking of the warship, the Mary Rose: "So tall, so grand. I was on her when she went down..." In between, lawyer-detective Matthew Shardlake and his assistant Jack Barak find themselves embroiled in two murky investigations - the first involving the "monstrous wrongs" allegedly perpetrated by wealthy cloth merchant Sir Nicholas Hobbey against his young ward, Hugh Curteys; the second concerning the troubled past of a Bedlam inmate called Ellen Fettiplace. A patient for nearly 20 years, Ellen is frightened and lonely - and in love with Shardlake.
The Hobbey-Curteys case leads Shardlake and Barak to Sir Nicholas's estate near Portsmouth, in Hampshire. "And the way to Hampshire lay through West Sussex. Where Ellen came from."
Two mysteries to unravel. A parade of intriguing characters to interview and interrogate - some disdainful of the hunchbacked lawyer; some obstructive and even dangerous; some not at all what they seem... And as Shardlake and his sidekick travel the countryside in their search for the truth, everywhere they see signs of preparations for war. For just across the Channel the French fleet is getting ready to attack.

Lee Mack
Kirsty Young interviews the comedian Lee Mack.
He writes and stars in the BBC One hit show "Not Going Out". His stand-up tours do great business and his lightening sharp comedy reflexes are also put to good use on a number of prime-time panel shows.
His first ever performance was doing impressions for his school mates, but it took him more than ten years to pluck up the courage to step on stage. Leaving school with two O'levels and a cheeky grin, he had a stint as Red Rum's stable boy and a bash at being a professional darts player.
He says of his comedy career "I'm the kind of person that, if I don't think it's hard work, I worry that it's not worthwhile. I have to feel as if I've struggled a bit."

SUN 11:00 Sneakernomics (p09fy38g)
9. Footnotes
Sneakernomics is a close encounter with the visionaries, artisans and journeymen who’ve made, and been made, by trainers. We’ll follow in the footsteps of mavericks, hustlers and dreamers, and hear their tales of boom and bust, fame and infamy, hope and heartbreak.
Across nine episodes, Sneakernomics tells the extraordinary origin stories of some of the world’s biggest brands, and how sponsorship deals and celebrity culture redefined our relationship with products. It’s also a business story – how leisure has evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry; a sports story – how games became organised and grew into a global spectacle; and it’s a story of invention – how enthusiastic hobbyist-pioneers often took extraordinary risks that changed the course of sport and fashion.
The sneaker story is characterised by fierce competition and rivalry. We explore how the quest to be number one tore families and friendships apart and divided towns. Above all, this is the story of the people behind the shoes. What you’ll hear is a mix of interviews with many of the key individuals who’ve played their part in that extraordinary story, interlaced with moments of fiction inspired by their testimonies and our research.
Written and presented by Nicholas Smith, with 1Xtra presenter Ace. The drama is written by Al Smith.

Pick a Sky and Name It
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Pick a Sky and Name It featuring successful millennial poet Momtaza Mehri from Somalia.
How did Momtaza Mehri go from net savvy 6th former to successful millennial poet?
A house belonging to her grandmother is the closest poet Momtaza Mehri has ever come to having a permanent home. Aside from summer months in London, Momtaza’s family picked its way across the Middle East.
“Then I just realise, I’m having this typical Somali experience where we’re literally going to the places that would be considered the bad ‘hoods.”
Across a sea, another gulf, was the country her parents no longer called home.
Talking with her mother, Momtaza revisits the childhood experiences that shaped her outlook and her coming of age as a millennial poet.
Poetry extracts are taken from:

SUN 13:00 A Dangerous Innocence by Elizabeth Jane Howard (Omnibus) (b07wxrsh)
The biography of novelist Elizabeth Jane Howard, author of The Cazalet Chronicles, who died in 2014, from biographer Artemis Cooper. Marriage, motherhood and Jane's first writings.
Elizabeth Jane Howard wrote brilliant novels about what love can do to people, but in her own life the lasting relationship she sought so ardently always eluded her. She grew up yearning to be an actress; but when that ambition was thwarted by marriage and the war, she turned to fiction. Her first novel, The Beautiful Visit, won the John Llewellyn Rhys prize - she went on to write fourteen more, of which the best-loved were the five volumes of The Cazalet Chronicle.
Following her divorce from her first husband, the celebrated naturalist Peter Scott, Jane embarked on a string of high-profile affairs. Yet the image of a sophisticated woman hid a romantic innocence which clouded her emotional judgement. She was nearing the end of a disastrous second marriage when she met Kingsley Amis, and for a few years they were a brilliant and glamorous couple - until that marriage too disintegrated. She settled in Suffolk where she wrote and entertained friends, but her turbulent love life was not over yet. In her early seventies Jane fell for a conman. His unmasking was the final disillusion, and inspired one of her most powerful novels, Falling.
Artemis Cooper interviewed Jane several times in Suffolk. She also talked extensively to her family, friends and contemporaries, and had access to all her papers. Her biography explores a woman trying to make sense of her life through her writing, as well as illuminating the literary world in which she lived.

SUN 15:30 Linard's Travels (b047bzl0)
Deep and distinguished, yet rugged and wise, Linard Davies serves the next customer wanting their bag wrapped in cling film at the Airport Travel Agency in San Francisco. Linard deals with the packages that the airlines won't and swears by his motto, 'We don't say no'.
Perhaps it's this can-do attitude that has earned him a reputation for dealing with urns. 'We must have had over a hundred urns'. A traffic cop stored his father's ashes with Linard while putting on a function at his house. He would occasionally pop in and ask, 'How's my dad doing? Linard would reply, 'He's doing great, he ain't bothering nobody!'
A Korean girl flying to Atlanta left the ashes of her mother with Linard, never to be picked up. He now considers the deceased his business partner, talking to her on long night shifts. Yet he does feel a little responsible for 'Grandma' as he calls her, as he accidentally broke the urn and the ashes scattered onto the floor. So Grandma is now forever in San Francisco Airport.
The Airport Travel Agency deals with all kinds of artefacts, from a set of house keys to a bass violin, kayak, or extra-large dog kennel (minus the dog). The unofficial historian of the Airport Travel Agency, Carol, gives us a run down of the strangest items - clown shoes, 10-foot tall carved wooden doors from Bali and a set of fresh moose antlers, to name just a few.

Episode 1
Part 1. It's the Solstice music festival, when 150,000 people descend on a farm in the North-East for the open-air event of the summer. The audience pours in from all over the UK and beyond. The artistes come from all round the globe. The journalists likewise.
Among the hacks is Zoe Meadows, who has left her husband Jamie and two small children at home to watch the event on TV. For really, if you weren't working, who would actually want to be there, partying for a weekend without adequate sanitary facilities on what is, at its heart, an agricultural site?
You wouldn't go hungry, though. Well, you might if you thought too closely about those hundreds of food stalls desperate to keep their costs down, not asking too many questions of their meat suppliers, not really caring whether those hand-crafted pork sausages are from pigs stuffed full of antibiotics on the intensive farming unit they came from. One of those food stalls is Sam's Sausage Sandwiches, run by Sam and Lisa Shore.
Zoe owes them a great deal. Since becoming a mother and wanting fewer hours she has taken a step back from investigative journalism and has settled for covering the softer stories such as Solstice. Even this wouldn't have been possible without Sam and Lisa who stepped in to look after the kids when both her and Jamie were working...

SUN 18:45 Roald Dahl: Served with a Twist (b07j571j)
My Lady Love, My Dove
Charles Dance leads the cast as the urbane Storyteller in dramatisations of five classic tales by Roald Dahl. Bizarre and amusing by turns, these dark comedies are justly famous for their surprise endings, and for their rogues gallery of crooks, cheats and schemers.
The stories show Dahl at the height of his powers as a writer of adult fiction, combining black comedy with sly social satire. They are stylishly plotted, vividly characterised and made unforgettable by their breezy cynicism, presenting a hilariously bleak view of human nature.
In My Lady Love, My Dove, starring Penelope Keith, we meet Arthur and Pamela Beauchamp, a wealthy couple who like to play bridge. However, they are continually being beaten by the Snapes – a younger couple who stay with them as house guests. But Pamela has devised a cunning way of getting her own back.

MON 14:30 The Countertenor (b017cjmg)
Men who sing in falsetto: Bidisha surveys the countertenor voice - in classical music and in the music of Jimmy Somerville, Smokey Robinson, the Bee Gees and Plan B. She looks at the sexual ambiguity and ethereal quality of a voice that can still make people feel uncomfortable.
Many people still associate the countertenor sound with the use of castrati, even though the last of that breed died nearly a century ago. The voice is inextricably linked in their minds with the notion of being unmanly, different, lesser or 'other'. At the same time the countertenor sound itself can be so beautiful that it is beguiling; listeners find themselves torn between the pleasure of the art and their social confusion.
Writer and broadcaster Bidisha, fascinated by hearing the voice of Alfred Deller on the radio, visits Canterbury Cathedral to find out how the voice became part of classical music mainstream again after a silence of almost 200 years.
She discovers the role of composer Benjamin Britten in bringing the voice back onto the public stage in the part of Oberon in a Midsummer Night's Dream, written for Alfred Deller.
She visits a voice clinic to see a camera being put down the throat of a professional countertenor to see exactly what happens to a man's vocal cords when he sings in falsetto. And she asks - can all men sing in falsetto?
And she looks at the extensive and continuing use of the voice in pop music, where it has become more easily accepted than it was in classical music when it first became popular again.
With contributions from Mark Deller, Michael Chance, Iestyn Davies, Nicholas Clapton, Declan Costello, Ian Aitkenhead, Rev Richard Coles and Plan B.

Period Drama Politics
Steven Fielding, Professor of Political History at Nottingham University, asks whether the portrayal of class relations in period dramas - Downton Abbey, Upstairs Downstairs and Noël Coward's play Cavalcade - had any political effect.
Steven sees striking parallels between the dramas; all three are set in the early decades of the twentieth century in wealthy households with servants; all three portray the relationship of the upper classes with their servants as essentially benevolent; all three appeared at times of national crisis (the 1930s, the 1970s and after the 2008 financial crash); and a Conservative government was voted in after each one.
Steven investigates whether there is a pattern here. Are these dramas just comforting entertainment or could they have had a subtle effect on voting habits? And how accurate is the portrayal of relations between the ruling classes and their servants?
Featuring a specially recorded interview with Downton creator Julian Fellowes, and an archive interview with the Script Editor of Upstairs Downstairs, Alfred Shaughnessy, that hasn't been broadcast before.
With archive material from Noël Coward, Sheridan Morley, Jean Marsh, Eileen Atkins, and Sir John Gielgud, and contributions from Coward's biographer Philip Hoare, Upstairs Downstairs expert Richard Marson, and Selina Todd, Professor of Modern British History at Oxford University.

The author Brendan King is a freelance translator, editor and reviewer, with a special interest in late nineteenth century French literature. He completed his PhD on Joris-Karl Huysmans’ life and work at Birkbeck College, London, in 2004.
Between 1987 and 2010, King worked for Beryl Bainbridge, and helped prepare for publication a number of the novels she wrote during this period, including the book she was working on at the time of her death, The Girl in the Polka-dot Dress, which was published posthumously.

Jaws made the scientist Dr Gareth Fraser what he is today - a lecturer in Evolutionary Developmental Biology, and shark jaw specialist, at the University of Sheffield's Department of Animal and Plant Sciences.
This is his exploration of Jaws - the fiction of the rogue shark that enthralled Gareth when he was a boy in South Wales, looking out on the dark silt of the Bristol channel, wondering what lay beneath.
Even the eminent Professor David Sims (of the Marine Biological Association and University of Southampton) admits to looking out for the fins of Great Whites when he's out tagging toothless basking sharks in Devon and Cornwall.
Can the story really still have such power over our psyches?
Jaws was written by Peter Benchley in 1974, and turned into the first summer blockbuster, by Stephen Spielberg, a year later.
It may have inspired Gareth to swim with sharks - despite his father's fisherman's tales of sea monsters - yet it petrified other people out of the water for good.
Gareth asks what innate fears Jaws taps into - the fear of being eaten alive, like in Hansel and Gretel, or of the deep, dark unknown of the sea. He asks how realistic Jaws' tale of a Great White killing machine really is and what impact it still has today - both on sharks and on new generations of swimmers, either running from the water after flashbacks from the film or running into the waves determined to grow up to be another Matt Hooper, the story's charismatic shark scientist.

A biography of the novelist who denied that she ever wrote fiction, maintaining that her books were based on her experiences. “What is more peculiar, more riveting, devious and horrific than real life?" she said.

WED 14:30 Every Day in Every Way (b01mqq6f)
Gillian Darley explores the life of Emile Coué who created the mantra ‘every day, in every way, I'm getting better'.
Positive thinking gurus and hypnotherapists aren't the only ones familiar with the phrase 'Every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better.' It's reputation today is that of a trite, rather ineffective 'feel good' relic of yesteryear but the phrase, and the man who conjured it up have a fascinating history.
Writer Gillian Darley explores the work of the Frenchman Emile Coué who, though a mere pharmacist in his native France, came to be one of the best known figures of the post First World War world. His visits to England and America were proceeded by record sales of his books which encouraged advocates in the ways of auto-suggestion.

The scientific community are dismissive of his place in the development of psychiatric thinking and development and Gillian reveals reports of one event in which he caused chaos amongst a group of shell-shocked soldiers during a 1922 visit to England. But there are others who say that the 'Every day, in every way' phrase, borrowed to comic effect by Frank Spencer amongst others, hides a genuine pioneer in cognitive therapy.
Using contemporary eye-witness reports and newspaper coverage of his travels, Gillian reveals a character who might well merit a more measured response from those writing the popular, as well as the academic, history of 20th-century medicine.
Meanwhile in France a recent conference in his old base in Nancy is part of a new interest in the Coué method, ensuring that 'Every Day, in Every way' he's reputation is, at the very least, changing.

Batman was an orphan; Lisbeth Salander, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, was an orphan; Superman was an orphan and a foundling. Cinderella was a foster child. Darth Vader - well, they can't all be winners. Lemn Sissay returns to BBC Radio 4 with a comic and poetic look at the treatment of children raised in care, orphans and foster children in popular culture, comparing them with reality. Because it surely says something about how we view them that we create so many for fiction.
Lemn will explore the gap between fiction and reality, based on his own experiences of growing up in care as well as those of some special guests.
4. The Dark Side
No-one, really, believes they are doing evil. Anakin Skywalker did not become Darth Vader because he liked being bad, he did it because he believed his pregnant wife was in danger - and so began his journey to the Dark Side. When must you let go of your memories and live?

THU 14:30 Scotland Meet Murray Lachlan Young (b03m3ntr)
In 1994, a young man named Murray Lachlan Young, who had been born in the United States to a Scottish father and an English mother, went in search of his Scottish roots.
As a reedy 20-something in a tweed cap, he toured around a Scotland still recovering from the downturn of the 1980s and 90s, meeting his Scottish relatives from dank Glasgow to mystical Skye, sometimes bemusing them with his enthusiasm for all things Scottish. His encounters spurred him into an outpouring of poetry and a re-examination of the role his Scottish roots played in his life. "The trip was to write a poem that captured the wild heart of Scotland and delivered my Scottishness to me."
Twenty years on, Murray was ready to undertake that trip again. This time, the cultural context is the referendum on Scottish Independence. Murray is now an award-winning poet and a well-known voice on the airwaves – BBC Radio 4's Saturday Live and BBC 6 Music. But he is still struggling to grasp his own cultural identity.
Murray retraces his steps from Edinburgh, via Lochgilphead, to Islay in search of the answers to his personal predicament of what it means to be an Anglo-Scot in a time of deep historical change. All the while, he explores what Scottishness means for the people he encounters along the way. And the end result is a new poem to reflect his journey.

Series 1
The Salmon of Knowledge
Aisling Bea and Yasmine Akram become Ais and Yaz and are the very best pals. They take their role as Ireland's freshest story-tellers to the British nation very seriously indeed but haven't had the time to do much research, learn their lines or work out who is doing which parts.
The girls' unconventional way of telling stories involves a concoction of thoroughly inappropriate modern-day metaphors and references to many of the ancient Irish stories.
With a natural knack for both comedy and character voices Yasmine Akram and Aisling Bea will bring you warm, modern re-workings of popular ancient Irish stories.
Today it's the Salmon of Knowledge.
Written and performed by Aisling Bea and Yasmine Akram.
Producer: Raymond Lau.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in October 2012.
THU 22:45 Hannah Gadsby: Arts Clown (b05419l4)
1. Edouard Manet's Olympia
Art historian Hannah Gadsby kicks off her comedy lectures about four masterpieces, with Edouard Manet's masterpiece 'Olympia'.
She shares her first encounter with the art work as well as looking at what critics had to say about it at the time it was created.
Born in Tasmania, Hannah's first encounters with art was solely through books. These books taught her the language of art appreciation but they also legitimised her desire to look at 'boobs'. This was just as well as Hannah realised in her teens that she was 'a little bit lesbian' but homosexuality was still illegal in Tasmania at that time.
The painting 'Olympia' was first exhibited in Paris in 1865. It made a lot of people very angry at the time. Here was a reclining nude but this woman had attitude, looking right at the observer with no embarrassment or demureness. She was a whore - what of it?
The woman who posed for the painting was Victorine Meurent, not a prostitute but an artist in her own right and, says Gadsby, surely she had a major influence on Manet's considerably feminist approach to 'the reclining nude' in this painting.
Hannah explains what makes 'Olympia' a cornerstone of modern art and what bring her personally back to this painting again and again.
Hannah Gadsby is assisted in this series by her very own 'Quotebot' who has been inputted with every quote that's ever been written about art.
Quotebot sounds remarkably like comedy legend and all-round boffin John Lloyd.
Written by Hannah Gadsby
Script edited by Jon Hunter

The author Brendan King is a freelance translator, editor and reviewer, with a special interest in late nineteenth century French literature. He completed his PhD on Joris-Karl Huysmans' life and work at Birkbeck College, London, in 2004.
Between 1987 and 2010, King worked for Beryl Bainbridge, and helped prepare a number of the novels she wrote during this period for publication, including the book she was working on at the time of her death, The Girl in the Polka-dot Dress, which was published posthumously.

FRI 14:30 Essex, My Essex (b03w38q3)
Essex born and bred, writer Ian Sansom goes back to the county that made him who he is.
Ian's grandparents moved there from the east end of London to fulfil their dreams. For them, Essex was a promised land of milk and honey, of golden harvests and Harvester restaurants.
Ian left 30 years ago and hasn't really been back since.
But a lot can happen in 30 years and in that time just about everything has happened to Essex. When Ian left there was no Essex man, no jokes about Essex girls, no Birds of a Feather, no Gavin and Stacey, and The Only Way is Essex was a mere glint in the average commuter's eye.
Now, with the London-overspill county occupying a new space in the public imagination, Ian retraces his steps back to the place where he was born and which made him who he is.
Talking to people who've stayed there, meeting family and friends, going back to landmarks that meant something to him in his younger days, Ian finds out what's changed in Essex since he left.
Between the low-rise housing and out-of-town retail parks, he finds an anarchist community which uses the county as a place to reimagine life's possibilities, a secret nuclear bunker from which a post-apocalyptic Essex generation would emerge and a retired vice Lord Lieutenant who hopes limericks can change perception of Essex girls.
This is it. This is his Essex.
