SAT 05:30 The Confessional (m000x60b)
Series 1
The Confession of Alastair Campbell
Actor and broadcaster Stephen Mangan presents a comedy chat show about shame and guilt.
Each week Stephen invites a different eminent guest into his virtual confessional box to make three 'confessions' . This is a cue for some remarkable storytelling, and surprising insights.
We’re used to hearing celebrity interviews, where stars are persuaded to show off about their achievements and talk about their proudest moments. Stephen's not interested in that. He doesn’t want to know what his guests are proud of, he wants to know what they’re ashamed of. That’s surely the way to find out what really makes a person tick. Stephen and his guest reflect with empathy and humour on why we get embarrassed, where our shame thresholds should be, and the value of guilt.
In the final edition of this series, the writer, journalist and political strategist Alastair Campbell speaks about “maladaptive competitiveness”, technology which defeats him and dressing up at Lambeth Palace.
Other guests in this series include Cariad Lloyd, Dr Phil Hammond, Clarke Peters, Suzi Ruffell, Marian Keyes, Phil Wang, Joan Bakewell, Lucy Porter and Nigel Planer.
Written and presented by Stephen Mangan
With extra material by Nick Doody
Devised with Dave Anderson

John Osborne's Luther
It's over 500 years since Martin Luther reputedly hammered his 95 theses on the door of All Saints Church, Wittenberg - starting what became known as the Reformation. With the Pope using the sale of indulgences to fund his own obsessions and works, Luther had begun to see the church as corrupt. He was excommunicated in 1521.
John Osborne's play skilfully intertwines the sacred and the profane and tries to get inside the mind of the man who started as a profound believer in the church's teachings and ended up challenging them all.
The first production of the play was at the Theatre Royal, Nottingham in 1961. It won a Tony Award in 1964.

SAT 09:00 Rik Mayall on Radio (m0001pl7)
Broadcaster and Producer John Lloyd explores the fascinating radio contributions of the actor and comedian Rik Mayall to reveal a remarkable and eclectic mix of programmes and archives.
Rik Mayall, was one of the first and foremost alternative comedians in the UK, best known for his work on TV's The Young Ones, Bottom and The New Statesmen which all had tremendous impact on British situation comedy. However whilst enjoying tremendous success on television Mayall made many captivating contributions to radio which are often overlooked.
In this special tribute, in the year Mayall would have celebrated his 60th birthday, John Lloyd introduces highlights from Mayall’s radio years along with illuminating new interviews from some of the people closest to him.
Programmes featured include;
** Higher Education (2000). Mayall stars in the Lloyd Peters drama.

SAT 12:00 Lemn Sissay's Origin Stories (b07wpf5q)
1. The Bed under the Stairs
Batman was an orphan; Lisbeth Salander, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, was an orphan; Superman was an orphan and a foundling. Cinderella was a foster child. Darth Vader - well, they can't all be winners.
Taking a comic and poetic angle, Lemn Sissay compares reality against the treatment of children raised in care, orphans and foster children in popular culture. Because it surely says something about how we view them that we create so many for fiction?
In this opening episode, Lemn compares his experiences as a foster child to the life of Harry Potter.
Like Harry, Lemn was never told the truth about what happened to his parents. Like Harry, he found his foster parents harsh and unforgiving. But, like Harry, he came through those problems, avoided the dementors, and grew up.
As well as storytelling, comedy and poetry, Lemn imagines an interview with Vernon and Petunia Dursley - Harry's foster parents. Finally, they get to tell their side of the story.
Written and performed by Lemn Sissay.
Producer: Ed Morrish

SAT 13:00 Archive on 4 (b07mvd5z)
Tolkien: The Lost Recordings
Joss Ackland narrates a search through BBC archives for unheard gems from JRR Tolkien, as Oxford Academic Dr Stuart Lee discovers the unbroadcast offcuts from an interview given by the author.
Tolkien gave the interview for a BBC film in 1968, but only a tiny part of it was used in the broadcast programme. It was one of only a handful of recorded interviews he gave, and was also to be his last.
Dr Lee’s search for the unbroadcast rushes takes him to the depths of the BBC film archives, and back to the making of the original film Tolkien in Oxford.
For the director Leslie Megahey, only 23 at the time, this was his first film, and the one that launched a prestigious career. The programme reunites him with three others - researcher Patrick O’Sullivan, Tolkien fan Michael Hebbert, and critic Valentine Cunningham who describes how he was brought in to be the voice of dissent challenging the burgeoning Tolkien cult spreading from America.
What emerges is a picture of a playful academic, whose fiction was little respected by adults at the time and looked down on as a lesser form of literature. But he is robustly defended by Professor Tom Shippey and remembered fondly by his colleague Dr Roger Highfield.
Stuart Lee presents the results of his search through the archives to Dr Dimitra Fimi who considers any new words from Tolkien’s mouth as ‘gold’. While, for Dr Lee, the real dragon’s hoard is the privilege of hearing Tolkien in relaxed mode reflecting on his life as never before.

SUN 06:00 Wish Lanterns by Alec Ash (Omnibus) (b07qfyng)
The stories of young Chinese lives, particularly those young people born under the one-child policy of the 1980s, as they seek to negotiate the expectations of those around them and their own inner desires for self-fulfilment.
Dahai is a military child and a rebel, Fred is a daughter of the Party and Xiaoxiao grew up in the far north and longed to travel south. All were infants when the tanks rolled through Beijing in 1989 and none really know much about their country's recent past. But the way China develops in the future is very much something that will affect their lives - and their behaviour and decisions will affect ours.
There are approximately 322 million Chinese aged between 16 and 30 - a group larger than the population of the USA and destined to have an unprecedented influence on global affairs in the coming years. The one-child policy has led to a generation of only children. There is intense competition for education and jobs, and a tug-of-war between cultural change and tradition, nationalism and the lures of the West. We know the headlines of their lives, but what of the details?

SUN 11:00 Sneakernomics (p09fy35c)
7. The Cri de Coeur
Sneakernomics is a close encounter with the visionaries, artisans and journeymen who’ve made, and been made, by trainers. We’ll follow in the footsteps of mavericks, hustlers and dreamers, and hear their tales of boom and bust, fame and infamy, hope and heartbreak.

Across nine episodes, Sneakernomics tells the extraordinary origin stories of some of the world’s biggest brands, and how sponsorship deals and celebrity culture redefined our relationship with products. It’s also a business story – how leisure has evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry; a sports story – how games became organised and grew into a global spectacle; and it’s a story of invention – how enthusiastic hobbyist-pioneers often took extraordinary risks that changed the course of sport and fashion.

The sneaker story is characterised by fierce competition and rivalry. We explore how the quest to be number one tore families and friendships apart and divided towns. Above all, this is the story of the people behind the shoes. What you’ll hear is a mix of interviews with many of the key individuals who’ve played their part in that extraordinary story, interlaced with moments of fiction inspired by their testimonies and our research.

Written and presented by Nicholas Smith, with 1Xtra presenter Ace. The drama is written by Al Smith.

Mother Tongue - Close Encounters
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects an edition from the globe-trotting poetry series - Mother Tongue.
Poet Helen Mort explores poems in Somali, Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese and Polish - and in translation.
Reflecting on the phrase "Close Encounters", she explores how the very stuff of being human - relationships, identity, empathy - play a part in the work of these four distinct poets.
Asha Lul Mohamud Yusuf is fast emerging as one of the most outstanding Somali-language poets writing today. Her bold and striking poems are translated by British poet Clare Pollard. They join Helen to talk about the place of poetry in Somali culture and their translation partnership, which came about through the Poetry Translation Centre. With poems from her collection The Sea Migrations.
Helen then travels to Paris to meet the Syrian poet Maram al-Masri and hear poems from her collection Barefoot Souls, which imagines the lives of women who have experienced domestic violence, and from Liberty Walks Naked, al-Masri's response to recent events in Syria.
There's deadpan humour from Angelica Freitas, a brilliantly wry voice from Brazil. She takes a novel approach to exploring female identity in her poem A Woman Goes, and a bittersweet reflection on being alone in I Sleep With Myself.
We also hear a lost poem from the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. It's one of a small number of previously unpublished poems recently discovered among his papers and published in the collection Then Come Back.
Finally, one of the brightest stars in Polish literature - a poet, translator and novelist, Jacek Dehnel. His is an eclectic sort of empathy, with poems about the death of a world-famous musician and a lurid museum exhibit. And we hear his Polish translation of a very famous Philip Larkin poem.

SUN 15:30 Cerys Matthews's Blue Horizon (b01jqjl7)
Among Cerys Matthews's landmark musical memories is a very sunny summer Sunday afternoon in 2009.
It was the day that, browsing albums in Portobello Market, she parted with £70 and took home a rare copy of Fleetwood Mac's Sweet Pious Bird of Youth. She played it over and over again. She was hooked.
Since that day, Cerys has passionately fed her addiction to Blue Horizon records – seeking out and amassing a valuable collection of gems that are almost too precious to play.
Blue Horizon linked the roots of American blues with the 1960s UK blues scene. It was the home of US blues artists Champion Jack Dupree, Bukka White, Mississippi Joe Callicott and Furry Lewis, Eddie Boyd, Otis Spann, Ainsley Dunbar, Elmore James, plus British artists Chicken Shack and Fleetwood Mac.
Label founder Mike Vernon also invented the blues sound heard today. In 1966, he produced the Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton, considered one of the most influential British blues recordings. It was notable for its driving rhythms and Clapton's rapid blues licks with a full distorted sound derived from a Gibson Les Paul and a Marshall amp. This became something of a classic combination for British blues guitarists.
Cerys talks to Mike about his blues passion and how he left old-school Decca Records to strike out on his own. Artists from Blue Horizon's roster, including former members of The Yardbirds, Fleetwood Mac and Chicken Shack reflect on the part Blue Horizon played in their careers and establishing the credibility of Britain as a home for the blues.

SUN 18:45 Roald Dahl: Served with a Twist (b07j40wr)
The Bookseller
Charles Dance leads the cast as the urbane Storyteller in dramatisations of five classic tales by Roald Dahl. Bizarre and amusing by turns, these dark comedies are justly famous for their surprise endings, and for their rogues gallery of crooks, cheats and schemers.
The stories show Dahl at the height of his powers as a writer of adult fiction, combining black comedy with sly social satire. They are stylishly plotted, vividly characterised and made unforgettable by their breezy cynicism, presenting a hilariously bleak view of human nature.
In ‘The Bookseller’, we find Mr Buggage and his secretary Miss Tottle hard at work in the back room of Mr Buggage's book shop in London's Charing Cross Road. It soon becomes clear that they are running a most successful business - but the fortune they are amassing is not from the sale of books.

MON 14:30 James and the Giant Eagle (b010fc06)
Like most small boys James Aldred loved climbing trees and now he has grown up, he's still climbing trees; helping scientists and film crews up into the canopy. When he was invited to help a wildlife team film one of the world's largest eagles in Southern Brazil, it was an offer he couldn't refuse. But what happened next was a nerve-wracking and painful encounter with one of the world's most powerful birds. Harpy Eagles have a body length of over 3ft, a wingspan of over 6ft and weigh 10-12 pounds. Their hind talons can grow up to the size of grizzly bear claws, and are used to strike their prey; monkeys, sloths and possums, which they then carry aloft. When James was asked to climb a tree, to assist with moving a camera on an eagle's nest, he found out exactly why these birds have such an awesome reputation.
Harpy Eagles are found in tropical lowland forests from southeast Mexico to northern Argentina and southern Brazil. Their name is derived from the Harpies in Greek Mythology, which were ferocious winged creatures with sharp claws, a woman's face and a vulture's body.
Harpy Eagles are successful predators, owing primarily to their size and strength. They are also highly manoeuvrable fliers. They have excellent eyesight and good hearing, and are acutely observant and opportunistic birds. Taken together these attributes make for a highly impressive predator. Recordings made by James Aldred on location are combined with interviews with ornithologist Ian Newton and field biologist, Marta Curti (who has spent many years working with Harpy Eagles with The Peregrine Fund) in a programme which explores the behaviour and ecology of Harpy Eagles and what happens when a female tries to protect her young.

TUE 11:00 Is That Machine On? (b0b3vv2q)
Stuart Maconie celebrates the golden age of the music press interview.
In the heyday of the printed music media between the mid-sixties and the early noughties, the music interview was many things - combative, intimate, confessional, unhinged, flirtatious, sometimes violent - but it was rarely dull. Still, it seems that long-gilded age of rock journalism is now over.
The days of extraordinary access, when a reporter might spend a week with a band on its tour bus or private plane, hanging out in their dressing rooms and hotel suites, are at an end. The music papers are gone. Earlier this year NME - the last inky survivor - went online only.
Stuart Maconie looks back at the lost world - those revealing encounters between journalist and musician. The programme features classic recorded archive interviews with Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Bob Marley and Michael Jackson - as well as contributions from journalists Caitlin Moran, Barney Hoskyns, Allan Jones, Dawn Slough and others.

TUE 14:30 What We Leave We Carry: The Legacy of John la Rose (b00x95h6)
When John La Rose died in 2006 the poet Linton Kwesi Johnson wrote in his obituary, 'the depth and breadth of his contribution to the struggle for cultural and social change, for racial equality and social justice, for the humanisation of society, is unparalleled in the history of the black experience in Britain'. Hundreds crammed into his funeral.
In 1966 John La Rose founded New Beacon Books, at first selling Caribbean and African literature from his north London home, and then began publishing himself, becoming the first black publishing house in Britain. The shop and publishing house are still active today. In the early 1980s he organised - with others - the International Book Fair of Radical Black and Third World Books.
But his whole life was one of activism and political and cultural involvement. He was a trades unionist in Trinidad, and in the mid-1950s, he co-authored, with Raymond Quevedo (Atilla the Hun), an early study of calypso. With poets Andrew Salkey Kamau Brathwaite, he co-founded the Caribbean Artists Movement; he was chairman of the Institute of Race Relations; in response to the classification of some black children as 'educationally sub-normal' he became involved in the Black Education Movement and he founded the George Padmore Supplementary School for West Indian children in 1969. He was Chair of the committee that mobilised 20,000 people to march in protest through London after the arson attack in New Cross in 1981 in which 13 young black people died.
Poets, novelists, theologians, campaigners, sculptors and musicians - all gathered around the kitchen table of this erudite and generous man, liming and planning campaigns. Around that same table the actor and director Burt Caesar, who was himself influenced by John La Rose, joins his partner Sarah White and old friends Linton Kwesi Johnson, the poet and musician, Margaret Busby, founder of Britain's second black publishing house, the visiting Trinidadian scholar Susan Craig-James and Professor Gus John, who in Hackney in the 1980s, became the first black Director of Education in the country. They gather to tell his story, and consider the legacy of John La Rose.
Burt Caesar also visits the bookshop itself and the chambers of Ian MacDonald QC, who as a young lawyer allied himself with La Rose and his causes. He speaks to John's son Michael La Rose and the sculptor Errol Lloyd, who captured his intelligence and wit in bronze. Using BBC archive of John La Rose, calypso and dub poetry reggae associated with him, Burt tells the story of this remarkable man and how his influence lives on today.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2011.

Marking the centenary of the attack by the militant suffragette Mary Richardson on one of the greatest nudes ever painted, Diego Velázquez's masterpiece 'The Rokeby Venus', Mari Griffith examines Richardson's reasons for targeting the work, and looks at the way the event was reported at the time.
One of the finest works of the Spanish Golden Age and the only surviving nude by Velázquez, The Rokeby Venus was painted during the Spanish Inquisition, escaped censorship, was brought to Britain, and was the first artwork to be saved for the nation by the National Art Collections Fund in 1906. In what became one of the most famous and symbolic acts of 20th century iconoclasm, on March 10th, 1914, the painting was badly damaged by Mary Richardson in the National Gallery in London. In a statement she said that she had "tried to destroy the picture of the most beautiful woman in mythological history as a protest against the Government for destroying Mrs. Pankhurst, who is the most beautiful character in modern history". Emmeline Pankhurst was in Holloway Prison at the time and with suffragettes including Richardson herself being subjected to force-feeding in prison, humiliation, intimidation and violence, Richardson said she was attempting to point to the hypocrisy of a society which would value an inert object over a human life. She gained little sympathy from the broader public, and received a mawling from the Press. She also varied her statements over time on the subject. Her autobiography of 1953 sets out her version of events and her reasons for attacking the painting, but it appears that that book doesn't tell the whole story. By the time of a BBC archive interview recorded in 1961, the year of her death, her reasons given include "I hate women being used cheaply as nudes. I'd seen men gloating over that picture". She also mentions in the interview that the judge sentencing her was almost in tears at only being able to give her 6 months in jail.
Art historian Mari Griffith has lectured on the Rokeby Venus, and to find out more about the story behind Mary Richardson's attack on the painting, she talks to Lynda Nead, author of 'The Female Nude', on how the 1914 attack was interpreted at the time, the outrage caused by it, and the way the incident has come to symbolize the perception of feminist attitudes towards the female nude. Mari studies the restored work in the National Gallery with the curator of Italian and Spanish paintings, Letizia Treves, and discusses its historical signficance and continuing influence. Photographer Tom Hunter talks about his reinterpretation of the painting in his Hackney-based series 'Living in Hell', and the wide-ranging responses the painting still elicits. In the press coverage of the incident in 1914 Richardson was nicknamed 'Slasher Mary' by the press, and the painting likened to a human victim. Venus is hailed as a paragon of female beauty: she is young, fertile and passive. Richardson embodies the opposite form of femininity – the militant suffragist, pathologized, deemed hysterical, a deviant, even. A century on, how does history judge her?

Batman was an orphan; Lisbeth Salander, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, was an orphan; Superman was an orphan and a foundling. Cinderella was a foster child. Darth Vader - well, they can't all be winners. Lemn Sissay returns to BBC Radio 4with a comic and poetic look at the treatment of children raised in care, orphans and foster children in popular culture, comparing them with reality. Because it surely says something about how we view them that we create so many for fiction.
Lemn will explore the gap between fiction and reality, based on his own experiences of growing up in care as well as those of some special guests.
2. MUTATIS MUTANDIS
In this second episode, Lemn looks at the children at Charles Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, otherwise known as The X-Men Academy; specifically, Rogue and Wolverine, whose dark and tragic origins lie long before either of them reached the School. But there, Xavier - Professor X - sought to teach the children how to control their powers and make the most of them. Lemn's experiences in children's homes in Wigan was not the same. What difference would it have made it it had been?
Lemn also talks to comedian and care leaver Sophie Willan, who spent most of her childhood in foster care and assisted accommodation. What superpowers did she discover she had, removed from the security of family?

THU 07:30 Sarah Kendall: Talking Story (m000x6w9)
Sharon Horgan
Sarah Kendall started her career as a stand-up comedian in the late 90’s in Australia. After 15 years performing stand-up comedy in comedy clubs and at festivals around the world, Sarah moved away from the more traditional joke telling aspect of the job and transitioned into storytelling.
Sarah wanted to create something on stage that felt like the sort of films she loved to watch, so she wrote an hour-long show that was one single story as opposed to a series of jokes and routines. She reimagined her teenage years as though they had been directed by John Hughes, giving her memories a full, cinematic makeover.
She found, in telling these personal stories, that she was connecting with her audience in a way that was more meaningful to her and in a way that she wasn’t able to with the jokes and routines in her previous shows. What is it about stories that brings people together. How do we use stories to make sense of life?
In this series, Sarah will be talking to three different storytellers about what ‘story’ means to them and about how they developed their own style of storytelling in their respective mediums.
In this episode, Sarah talks to writer and director Sharon Horgan about finding the perfect writing partner, how her writing reflects her life and a disastrous audition with Ricky Gervais.
Sarah’s live storytelling shows have been adapted for BBC Radio 4 and have formed two seasons of her series - ‘Sarah Kendall: Australian Trilogy’. The show went on to win numerous awards including the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Award. Since then, Sarah has gone on to write and star in the award winning and BAFTA nominated sitcom ‘Frayed’.

Historian and author Kate Williams goes in search of the modern winning smile.
The wide and toothy smile is all around us and used in many different and persuasive ways, from the delight of meeting up with friends, beautiful people beaming down from billboards persuading us to buy their product, to politicians vying to win our votes, the broad and confident smile is very much at the centre of communication in today's society. However this hasn't always the case, with open mouthed smiling deemed a sign of madness and undignified.
We discover the impact of dentistry and films on our changing relationship with our smiles, the role gender and culture play, why most of us hate smiling in photographs and Jenni Murray explains why she would never broadcast without one.

Akram Khan on Srinivasa Ramanujan
In 1914, a self-taught Mathematics student called Ramanujan left India for Trinity College Cambridge where, alongside the celebrated English mathematician GH Hardy, he completed some extraordinary work on Pi and prime numbers. What was even more extraordinary was that he couldn't prove a lot of his work, and attributed many of his theories to a higher power.
For the renowned UK choreographer Akram Khan, there is a beauty in patterns and maths, and he sees Ramanujan's genius as a clash between Eastern and Western cultures. Together with presenter Matthew Parris, he explores the mathematician's life. Guest Professor Robin Wilson, who once visited Ramanujan's home, takes them through some of the maths, and explains why you'll never look at the number 1729 in the same way again.

It's the biggest day in his career and he is on the brink of closing the biggest deal in the history of Maidstone but, when Guy Starling strides into his office at Solutify Technology, a software house that develops games for grown-ups to waste their time playing on their phones, he is confronted with an 11 year old boy playing keepy-uppies.
And to make matters worse, no one else can see or hear him. Because he is Hennikay, Guy’s imaginary friend from his lonely childhood.
Neither of them know why he is there after all these years but he refuses to leave and, even though he sees the world through the naïve eyes of a child from 1976, Hennikay might just be there to help his oldest (and only) friend in the world save the day and close the deal.
Acclaimed comedian (and reigning Strictly Come Dancing Champion) Bill Bailey leads a cast which includes Sanjeev Bhaskar and Elizabeth Carling in this warm, funny look at childhood, adulthood and some of the follies of modern life - where a man with a confused child in his head might just be the sanest man in the room.
Cast:
Guy – Bill Bailey
Tony – Sanjeev Bhaskar
Marika – Elizabeth Carling
Kallie – Anna Leong Brophy
Don – John Schwab
Hennikay – Max Pattison

FRI 14:30 The Louis Zamperini Story (b04n67xj)
A documentary, featuring Angelina Jolie, exploring the extraordinary life of Louis Zamperini, an archetypal American hero, in war and peace.
Angelina Jolie shares some very personal insight in to the important role that the American war hero has played in her life. She talks openly about her deep respect for Louis with historian Dr Uta Balbier, who tells his compelling story.
Louis Zamperini broke an American sporting record when he was 19, qualifying to run the 5,000 metres in the 1936 Berlin Olympics - the youngest athlete to ever represent his country. He didn't win, but still became a household name - a sports hero, who gained notoriety for stealing Hitler's flag from his Berlin HQ as a memento.
A few years later, the nation was at war and Zamperini joined the US Air Force, trained as a bombardier and was posted to the Pacific theatre, where he crewed on a B-24 bomber. His plane crashed in April 1942 and he was one of three survivors who spent 47 days drifting on a raft before being captured by the Japanese. He was interned in a prisoner of war camp where he endured 2 and a half years of regular brutal punishment.
Once he was released, Louis Zamperini became a born again Christian and devoted his life to redemption – travelling to Japan to track down each guard who abused him and personally forgiving them.
For the next 60 years, Zamperini devoted his life to teaching the importance of forgiveness and he became a popular and successful public speaker.
Angelina Jolie explains why Louis was so influential and how he provided her with a sense of purpose in her own private and professional life.
