In spring 1944, American women war correspondents gathered in London in anticipation of the D-Day invasion.
Women were not allowed to report from the front line, although that did not stop Martha Gellhorn. She returned to London as her marriage to Ernest Hemingway was ending - he had met his next wife, also a war correspondent, in the Dorchester hotel in London as he waited for the invasion to take place.
But it was Gellhorn, who hid on a hospital ship across the channel, who went ashore and wrote a dramatic account of it – she was subsequently disciplined by the authorities as she had no accreditation.
Others women, such as Helen Kirkpatrick witnessed Eisenhower's return from the front as she reported from D-Day HQ.
After D-Day itself, women reporters gradually started going to Normandy, such as Lee Miller, who filed dramatic photo-journalism accounts for British Vogue from a field hospital and then found herself on the frontlines of the siege of St Malo. The women followed the troops across Europe, arriving in Paris for its liberation in August.
It was a key moment in the history of women war correspondents.
Lyse Doucet recounts their stories with archive audio, readings from their articles and letters, interviews with relatives and their biographers. She explains how the work of women war correspondents has changed since then.

SAT 05:30 The Confessional (m000wjfr)
Series 1
The Confession of Joan Bakewell
Actor, comedian and broadcaster Stephen Mangan presents a comedy chat show about shame and guilt.
Each week Stephen Mangan invites a different eminent guest into his virtual confessional box to make three 'confessions'. This is a cue for some remarkable storytelling, and surprising insights.
We’re used to hearing celebrity interviews where stars are persuaded to show off about their achievements and talk about their proudest moments. Stephen's not interested in that. He doesn’t want to know what his guests are proud of, he wants to know what they’re ashamed of. That’s surely the way to find out what really makes a person tick. Stephen and his guest reflect with empathy and humour on why we get embarrassed, where our shame thresholds should be, and the value of guilt.
This week, legendary broadcaster Joan Bakewell confesses to gaffes in the Big Apple, escapades in Paris and not being outspoken enough.
Other guests in the series include Cariad Lloyd, Dr Phil Hammond, Clarke Peters, Suzi Ruffell, Marian Keyes, Phil Wang, Lucy Porter, Nigel Planer and Alastair Campbell.
Written and presented by Stephen Mangan
With extra material by Nick Doody
Devised with Dave Anderson and produced by Frank Stirling

SAT 13:00 Archive on 4 (b08x2zn8)
Apocalypse Nigh
In 2017, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists set its Doomsday Clock at two minutes to midnight, their judgement that humanity had moved closer to its own destruction.
It's a theme embraced in popular culture, from the surprise-bestseller, The Ladybird Book of the Zombie Apocalypse to armageddon-chic on the catwalk.
However while politics, pollution and the very real threat of terrorism may indeed have made our world less stable, Robin Ince considers whether our concern with disaster is also age-old and sometimes imagined.
Using the archive, he explores our longstanding preoccupation with the apocalypse, from religion and science to comedy and drama, and what it tells us about the way we think.
Drawing on diverse sources from nuclear missile tests to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Orson Wells' infamous radio hoax, Ince discovers how destruction has been portrayed in different ways across the decades, with archive contributions from thinkers including physicist Richard Feynman and philosopher Noam Chomsky.
Robin hears from contemporary commentators with an interest in the darker side of human thought. Novelist Lionel Shriver and psychotherapist Susie Orbach explain what the apocalypse means to them.
Ince also searches the archive for practical advice in the event of catastrophe. He meets Professor Lewis Dartnell, a disaster-expert who explains how to reboot civilisation in the event of apocalypse.

How the shoe wars and the Dassler family rivalry reached their peak in Mexico 1968.

Sneakernomics is a close encounter with the visionaries, artisans and journeymen who’ve made, and been made, by trainers. We’ll follow in the footsteps of mavericks, hustlers and dreamers, and hear their tales of boom and bust, fame and infamy, hope and heartbreak.

Across nine episodes, Sneakernomics tells the extraordinary origin stories of some of the world’s biggest brands, and how sponsorship deals and celebrity culture redefined our relationship with products. It’s also a business story – how leisure has evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry; a sports story – how games became organised and grew into a global spectacle; and it’s a story of invention – how enthusiastic hobbyist-pioneers often took extraordinary risks that changed the course of sport and fashion.

The sneaker story is characterised by fierce competition and rivalry. We explore how the quest to be number one tore families and friendships apart and divided towns. Above all, this is the story of the people behind the shoes. What you’ll hear is a mix of interviews with many of the key individuals who’ve played their part in that extraordinary story, interlaced with moments of fiction inspired by their testimonies and our research.

Written and presented by Nicholas Smith, with 1Xtra presenter Ace. The drama is written by Al Smith.

It seems that Luke Hadler reached snapping point, killed his wife and child and then committed suicide.
When policeman Aaron Falk returns to his hometown for his old friend's funeral he wants to get away again as soon as possible. He certainly doesn't want to be reminded of the secret he and Luke shared twenty years earlier. But as he's unwillingly drawn into the investigation into the Hadler deaths, the past keeps getting in the way. Questions mount and suspicion spreads through the town, and Falk must face what's hidden in his own past to help him solve the secrets of the present.

MON 14:30 Percy Edwards Showdown (b00htwx7)
David Attenborough stars in a new role: radio quizmaster - in a show all about Percy Edwards, who enjoyed a 70 year career impersonating birds and beasts.
That was a first, and so is this programme - a documentary game-show, combining the strange story of Percy's life, with archive of his impersonations, interviews with those who knew him, and a quiz. Among the contestants are Bill Oddie and the comedian Alex Horne.
Percy Edwards discovered his talent for talking like animals when he was seven. Dozing under a tree, he heard what he thought was a wolf-whistle and discovered that it was a bird. For several weeks, Edwards kept hearing this greenfinch and found that, with practice, he could imitate it. He even took to eating canary seed before going to bed in the hope that he would wake in the morning singing like a bird.
Eventually he was able to produce the sound of more than 600 birds, and some other beasts (his was the voice of the killer whale in Orca, the alien in Alien and he provided sheep noises for Kate Bush's song The Dreaming). He took to the stage aged 11, was a stalwart of the Generation Game in the 1970's and gave his final performance aged 80 at the London palladium in 1989. His repertoire was extraordinary, all 13 calls of the chaffinch, the strangely grinding sound of the amorous capercaille and corgis barking in Welsh accents.

Quizmaster Attenborough will play bird calls for the teams to identify, some of which will not be the birds, but Percy's impressions, so can they tell the difference? They will be asked not only the identity of the bird, but its circumstances. Is this a cry of distress, alarm or a sexy song? Woven into the rounds will be snippets about Edwards' life from the BBC?s archive ? he appeared on Parkinson, Wogan and Morecambe & Wise - revealing the importance of his work for raising the public?s awareness of wildlife, and the significance of his role as an ornithologist.
Percy Edwards died in 1996 aged 88.

The Ultimate Trip: Stanley Kubrick's Space Odyssey
Cultural historian and writer Christopher Frayling explores the lasting influence of Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C Clarke's 1968 science fiction masterpiece.
2001: A Space Odyssey was released into the world in April 1968. Puzzling, infuriating, inspiring and thrilling, it captivated audiences at the time and, fifty years on, continues to exert a powerful effect on our thinking about the present and the future.
This remarkable movie was the result of a synthesis of two very different visions. Based on his own short story The Sentinel, it was written by British author Arthur C Clarke - a futurist of uncanny ability. The director was Stanley Kubrick - an American working in the UK, whose previous works included the swords and sandals epic Spartacus and savage nuclear satire Dr Strangelove.
Marketed at the time as The Ultimate Trip, 2001 became an essential experience for younger audiences - many of whom went to see it multiple times, and sometimes in an enhanced state of consciousness. But alongside its wildly psychedelic visions, 2001 also presented an extraordinarily convincing and intricate vision of the future of space travel.
Christopher Frayling travels back in time to the creation of 2001, hearing how organisations like NASA and IBM were enlisted to help Kubrick craft his vision. And he speaks to scientists, critics and filmmakers to examine the film's enduring influence on science, design and popular culture.

Episode 2
Crime Down Under showcases some of the best crime fiction from contemporary Australia
A family has been brutally killed on their farm outside the small Australian country town of Kiewarra. It hasn't rained for two years, farms are failing and tensions in the community are running unbearably high.
In this episode, Falk begins to doubt the official explanation of the deaths

TUE 14:30 Caribbean Domino Club (b040lthj)
Benjamin Zephaniah explores the passion, community and history of Britain's high-octane Caribbean domino clubs, where each table is a stage and every game tells a story.
The mesmerising sound of the dominoes being shuffled keeps many players at the table into the small hours.
Benjamin visits his home town of Birmingham to find out how the dominoes scene has changed since his father taught him to play, and learns how the "bones" have been the soundtrack to centuries of Caribbean history, a thread linking slave plantations to south London bus stations.
Amid the high-decibel action of the Anglo-Caribbean Domino League Final, clubs from all over the UK battle it out in a fierce showdown of mind games, table slamming and dramatic winning poses.
Benjamin hears the stories of some of the nation's finest players – Black Hat, The Enforcer, Lady Sassy, Big C, Virgo, The Screamer – and finds out how the "sweet sound of the shuffle" plays on their subconscious, long after the slamming and cheering have died down.

Spiegel im Spiegel
Exploring the impact that Estonian composer Arvo Pärt's piece for piano and violin Spiegel im Spiegel has had on people's lives.
Written in 1978, just prior to his departure from Estonia, Arvo Pärt's Spiegel im Spiegel is musically minimal, yet produces a serene tranquillity.
It's in F major in 6/4 time, with the piano playing rising crotchet triads and the violin playing slow scales, alternately rising and falling, of increasing length, which all end on the note A. The score of the piece looks deceptively simple, but as violinist, Tasmin Little explains, it's one of the most difficult pieces to perform because the playing has to simply be perfect, or the mood is lost.
"Spiegel im Spiegel" in German literally can mean both "mirror in the mirror" as well as "mirrors in the mirror", referring to the infinity of images produced by parallel plane mirrors.
The programme contains an interview with visual artist Mary Husted who heard this work and was inspired to produce a set of collages called "Spiegel im Spiegel" which in a round about way, led to her long lost son tracing her for the first time in his life.

Episode 4
Bridget Christie returns in another series of her multi-award winning series about modern feminism.
Bridget thought that she'd be able to put her feet up after her last Radio 4 series, she expected it to bomb. Sadly it was a huge success and she's had to bang on about feminism ever since, perform two sell-out runs at the Edinburgh festival and win lots of awards.
But she hasn't managed to single-handedly eradicate sexism so she's made a whole new four-part series about it for Radio 4.
In this final episode, she talks about why she's not grateful Russell Brand has stopped being a sexist, what happens when you wear an end FGM badge on a popular TV show and why politics has a women problem.
She's assisted in this by the series' token man, Fred MacAulay.
The series is written and performed by Bridget Christie and the producers are Alexandra Smith and Alison Vernon Smith.

WED 14:30 The Brontes' Piano (b01d12ny)
Singer Catherine Bott explores the Bronte sisters' musical world through their newly restored piano, now returned to the parsonage in Haworth. Joined by pianist Jonathan Cohen, Catherine looks through the Bronte's family music collection and discovers how musical life at the parsonage underscored the sisters' creative life, their work and tastes.
When Charlotte Bronte discovered the poems of her sister Emily, she described them as having "a peculiar music - wild, melancholy and elevating." The Bronte sisters - Charlotte, Emily and Anne - have been mythologised and worshipped ever since their early deaths. Haworth Parsonage, where they and their troubled brother Branwell grew up, has been a place of pilgrimage for 150 years. The Brontes are a literary industry, because we need them to stand as symbols of doomed, rebellious womanhood. And their lives, just as much as their writing, oblige us. They all wrote compulsively from early childhood, creating fantastical worlds in minute writing, moralising verse-tragedies - and Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.
But when they made music, they came home from the fantasy lands of Gondal and Angria, to sing and play folk songs (such as Robert Burns' 'Ye Banks and Braes), popular numbers by Haydn, Handel's Harmonious Blacksmith, for their own pleasure, not solely to demonstrate their maidenly accomplishments. The piano their father bought them is still in the Parsonage, recently restored. And their sheet music is still in its drawer. Singer Catherine Bott and pianist Jonathan Cohen go to Haworth, to hold the music in their hands, and recreate a quiet evening at home with Charlotte, Emily, Anne and Branwell. They all lived much of the time in a "wild, melancholy and elevating" world, and that's part of the Bronte myth, but their music-making reminds us of a different side to them - perhaps one that doesn't quite fit with how we want or need them to be.

THU 07:30 John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme (m000wlnr)
Series 9
Episode 5
The ninth series of John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme is very different to the previous eight. It's still written by John Finnemore, "one of our best sketch writers", (The Observer), and performed by him with "a great supporting cast of Margaret Cabourn-Smith, Simon Kane, Lawry Lewin and Carrie Quinlan" (The Telegraph), and there are still sketches and songs. But, with no live studio audience this year, John has taken the opportunity to try something completely new
Every episode in this series of Souvenir Programme is made up of scenes from one person's life, played in reverse order. There's no narrative to the episode; it's still a sketch show, not a sitcom... but the sketches in each episode all happened to one person, played by one member of the cast, over the course of their lifetime.
This week concerns Newt, following his life backwards from a funeral in 1990 to an eventful Christmas dinner in 1898.
John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme started in 2011 and quickly established itself as "One of the most consistently funny sketch shows for quite some time" (The Guardian), and "One of the funniest and most inventive new radio comedy shows of recent years" (The Daily Mail).

The pair had a passionate but stormy relationship and, as they travelled south through Europe, their success was always touch-and-go. They had no money, Freida missed her children and they both argued like mad.

FRI 07:30 The Confessional (m000wsjf)
Series 1
The Confession of Lucy Porter
Actor, comedian and broadcaster Stephen Mangan presents a comedy chat show about shame and guilt.
Each week Stephen invites a different eminent guest into his virtual confessional box to make three 'confessions'. This is a cue for some remarkable storytelling, and surprising insights.
We’re used to hearing celebrity interviews, where stars are persuaded to show off about their achievements and talk about their proudest moments. Stephen isn't interested in that. He doesn’t want to know what his guests are proud of, he wants to know what they’re ashamed of. That’s surely the way to find out what really makes a person tick. Stephen and his guest reflect with empathy and humour on why we get embarrassed, where our shame thresholds should be, and the value of guilt.
This week, comedian Lucy Porter apologises for a youthful indiscretion, discusses the disadvantages of PVC and reveals a secret as yet untold.
Other guests in this series include Cariad Lloyd, Dr Phil Hammond, Clarke Peters, Suzi Ruffell, Marian Keyes, Phil Wang, Joan Bakewell, Nigel Planer and Alastair Campbell.
Written and presented by Stephen Mangan
With extra material by Nick Doody.
Devised with Dave Anderson

FRI 14:00 Crime Down Under: The Dry by Jane Harper (b092rckg)
Episode 5
A family has been brutally killed on their farm outside the small Australian country town of Kiewarra. It hasn't rained for two years, farms are failing and tensions in the community are running unbearably high.
In this episode, Falk is not the only one who has kept a secret for 20 years.
Crime Down Under showcases some of the best crime fiction from contemporary Australia

FRI 14:30 The School on the Moor (b092k9jp)
Revealing 1948 portrait of Cornwall’s Bolventor School with just 24 pupils aged 5 to 15, in two classrooms with two teachers, plus headmaster Reginald Bennetts and his wife.
In this experimental programme, BBC engineers had set-up microphones around this tiny remote village school in the middle of Bodmin Moor in the Autumn of 1947. Microphones and cables were left to allow children to get used to them.
The programme was recorded over a week with the head as presenter, plus the stories of two former pupils, who attended the school when it opened in 1877. (The school was closed in 1994).
Producer: Brandon Acton-Bond
First broadcast on the BBC West of England Home Service, it evoked vivid memories for listeners and inspired a wider broadcast (except Scotland and Wales) on the BBC Home Service in December 1948.

Poetry Schmoetry
Provocative and thoughtful new writing and discussion, presented by Dominic Arkwright. The title for this week's programme is 'Poetry Schmoetry.' The guests are the former Poet Laureate, Andrew Motion, the writer Guy Browning and performance poet, Rachel Pantechnicon.
Andrew talks about the elemental power of poetry; 'Poetry is for the most humane, as well as the most humanising aspect of the self.' Guy describes poetry as a 'tattered umbrella between you and the sun', and Rachel tells of her doomed attempt to retrace the wanderings of the Ancient Mariner. Andrew also indulges us with a reading from a contender for the 'worst poem ever written' award.
