The Confession of Suzi Ruffell
Actor, comedian and broadcaster Stephen Mangan presents a comedy chat show about shame and guilt.
Each week Stephen invites a different eminent guest into his virtual confessional box to make three 'confessions' are made to him. This is a cue for some remarkable storytelling, and surprising insights.
We’re used to hearing celebrity interviews where stars are persuaded to show off about their achievements and talk about their proudest moments. Stephen isn't interested in that. He doesn’t want to know what his guests are proud of, he wants to know what makes them ashamed. That’s surely the way to find out what really makes a person tick. Stephen and his guest reflect with empathy and humour on things like why we get embarrassed, where our shame thresholds should be, and the value of guilt.
This week, writer, podcaster and ‘confessional’ comedian, Suzi Ruffell recalls disruptive behaviour in class, a disastrous romantic break-up and the most embarrassing cab ride of her life.
Other guests *in this series include Marian Keyes, Cariad Lloyd, Joan Bakewell, Phil Hammond and Phil Wang.

The Advance Guard of the Avant-garde
In the 1960s, a group of writers set about shaking up the polite conventions of the British realist tradition through a whole range of experimental approaches.
Sound poets created some of the strangest programmes ever broadcast by the BBC, while the likes of BS Johnson cut holes in the pages of his novels - and in the case of his book 'The Unfortunates' published the unbound chapters in a box for the reader to mix up and read in whatever order they wished.
Johnson and similarly minded writers like Ann Quin, Bob Cobbing, Alan Burns and Christine Brooke-Rose were prominent in their day, appearing regularly on TV and radio, but they've now largely been forgotten.
Using some of the rich archive these writers left behind, DJ Taylor sets out to tell their story, with the help of Johnson's biographer Jonathan Coe, editor of a new Ann Quin collection Jennifer Hodgson, novelist Eimear McBride and poetry critic Jeremy Noel Tod.
Borrowing some of their techniques Taylor argues that while we may no longer talk about this group of determinedly experimental figures, many of today's most prominent writers, from David Mitchell to Alice Oswald, owe them a debt of gratitude.

Episode 5
Everyone craves a place where their mind and body are not applied to a particular task. The nearest faraway place.
Somewhere for drifting and lighting upon strange thoughts which don't have to be shooed into context, but which can be followed like balloons escaping onto the air. Late at night, in the dark and in a bunk bed, your tired mind can wander.
This is the nearest faraway place for Patrick Marber and Peter Curran.
Here they try to get the heart of things in an entertainingly vague and indirect way. This is not the place for typical male banter.
From under the bed clothes they play each other music, and archive of Angela Carter, ex-Prime Ministers, a Castrato singer, and an elephant playing the piano.
Work, family, literature, and their own badly-scuffed dreams are the funny, if warped conversational currency.

Graham Norton
From Grace Jones to his duet with Dolly Parton.
TV presenter and comedian, Graham Norton shares his castaway choices with Sue Lawley.
Graham was once voted the most powerful man in comedy with four BAFTAs and an international Emmy under his belt.
He's best known for his TV chat shows for Channel 4 and the BBC, as well as the annoying Father Noel in Father Ted. He's compared the two channels to the difference between a night out with your friends or a family Christmas lunch. Media critics pondered how his camp brand of adult humour would translate to mainstream TV. Graham went on to host a weekly show for BBC Radio 2, before switching to Virgin Radio.
Originally born Graham Walker in Dublin in 1963, he was brought up in the small town of Bandon in West Cork. As a child he loved TV describing it as a 'window to life' and a world he wanted to be part of.
He began an English and French degree at University College Cork but dropped out after his first year and went to America where he lived in a hippy commune in San Francisco. He eventually returned and enrolled at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London with the ambition of becoming an actor.
He changed his name to Norton - as the actor's union Equity infomed him they already had another Graham Walker on their books.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in May 2004.

Sneakernomics is a close encounter with the visionaries who’ve made, and been made, by trainers. We’ll follow in the footsteps of mavericks, hustlers and dreamers, and hear their tales of boom and bust, fame and infamy, hope and heartbreak.
It’s 100 years since salesman Chuck Taylor joined Converse and the Chuck Taylor All-Star was born, perhaps the most iconic trainer of all time. Across nine episodes, we trace the extraordinary transformation that has happened since, telling the origin stories of some of the world’s biggest brands and how leisure evolved into a multi-billion-dollar industry.
The sneaker story is characterised by fierce competition and rivalry. We explore how the quest to be No. 1 tore families and friendships apart, divided towns, and sometimes even distorted sporting ideals.
Presented by Nicholas Smith, (author of Kicks: The Great American Story of Sneakers) and 1Xtra presenter Ace, with drama written by multi award-winning playwright and screenwriter Al Smith.

No Ideas But In Things: The Poetry of William Carlos Williams
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects No Ideas But In Things: The Poetry of William Carlos Williams.
Presented by poet Annie Freud, with the former American Poet Laureate Billy Collins, and poets August Kleinzahler and Mark Ford.
William Carlos Williams is known as a revolutionary figure in poetry but, in comparison to his friend Ezra Pound and American writers including TS Eliot and Gertrude Stein, who sought a more exciting environment for creativity in Europe, Williams lived a strikingly conventional life.
A doctor for more than 40 years serving the New Jersey town of Rutherford, he relied on his patients and the America around him to create a distinctively American verse. His lifelong quest was that poetry should mirror the speech of the American people.
A second generation immigrant, he sought to make something of the people and for the people in America.
Williams' sense of ordinary people, living in a real place not an imagined city of ancient relics and memory, defined America for him and infused his work. He got rid of the high blown poetic language of Europe, paring down his verse to essential, unemotional, broken lines. His famous poem The Red Wheelbarrow, published in 1923, is 16 words on 8 lines.
He was awarded the Pullitzer prize for poetry, posthumously, in the year he died 1963.
He is America's first true poet.

Series 1
Virgil
Natalie Haynes, critic, writer and reformed stand-up comedian, brings the ancient world entertainingly up to date.
In each episode, she profiles a figure from ancient Greece or Rome and creates a stand-up routine around them. She then goes in search of the links which make the ancient world still very relevant in the 21st century.
For starters, Natalie considers the work of the Roman poet Virgil, ranging from his hints on bee-keeping to his great work The Aeneid.
Dido is the classic wronged woman and the Aeneid contains the best ding-dong between a man and a woman in all Latin literature, culminating in Dido’s memorable promise “If you go I’m going to kill myself and then I will pursue you from beyond death with black fires!”
With Pamela Helen Stephen who's sung Dido in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, bee-keeper Gordon Cutting and Dr Llewelyn Morgan who talks about the greatest poet in the Roman world.
Producer: Christine Hall.

SUN 15:30 Tehrangeles (b01n0sc7)
Comedian Maz Jobrani takes a journey to Tehrangeles - home to the largest Iranian diaspora in the world, right in the heart of Los Angeles.
Recorded on location, Iranian stand-up comedian and actor Maz Jobrani begins his journey in a street lined with Iranian stores, restaurants, beauty salons, cafes and businesses, where everyone speaks Farsi and all the shop signs are in Persian.
But this is not downtown Tehran - this is Westwood Boulevard in Los Angeles, a stone's throw from affluent Beverly Hills, where 22% of the population are Iranian, and whose former Iranian born mayor Jimmy Delshad epitomizes the extraordinary success of Iranians in LA.
When bookshop owner Bijan Khalili set up shop here over 30 years ago, there were only a few Persian stores. He and others along Westwood Boulevard tell the story of how and why the LA community steadily grew into a Mecca for hundreds of thousands of Iranians. And how, against the backdrop of 32 years of hostility between America and Iran since the 1979 US hostage crisis, they have succeeded in making their mark.
Even Bravo TV (creators of The Kardashians) have recently aired a hit reality TV show about the lives of a group of affluent Beverly Hills Iranians.
LA based Iranian- American comedian and actor Maz Jobrani delves into the heart of this unique and diverse microcosm of Iran in the heart of LA, otherwise known as Tehrangeles, to reveal the surprising stories and insights into the lives of Iranians who have recreated Little Tehran in the City of Angels.

Metzengerstein by Edgar Allan Poe
A Plague on both your Houses. Edgar Allan Poe's first published short story (January 1932).
In a writing career that spanned barely two decades (he died in his 41st year) the American penned over seventy 70 stories. These he incessantly revised over the years and many became standards of the short form (like ‘The Fall Of The House of Usher’ or ‘The Pit and the Pendulum’).
But for our five fictional tales, we burrow down amongst Poe’s lesser-known, and often dark, gems.

Series 2
Mission Command
Series 2 of this Radio 4 comedy follows Beauty's continuing adventures among the cauliflower-cheese eating population as the Featherdown Agency sends her to provide care for those who need it - and occasionally some who don't, but all of whom have relatives with guilty consciences. Beauty sees herself as an inspiration to other African girls hoping to live the dream in Britain. Until she gets the nod from God about which sector of the economy would most benefit from her entrepreneurial skills, Beauty will carry on grating the Extra Mature Cathedral City, running the assisted baths and trying to understand the British character.
The series breaks the embarrassed silence about what happens to us when we get old and start to lose our faculties. Beauty sees Britain at its best, its worst and also sometimes without its clothes on running the wrong way down the M6 with a toy dog shouting 'Come on!'
Beauty of Britain is a narrative comedy written by Christopher Douglas (of Ed Reardon fame) and Nicola Sanderson.
Episode 5 'Mission Command'
Beauty Oolonga, a Southern African care worker, shares her quirky view of Britain. Dead Jews
Award-winning comedian Alex Edelman asks why Jews are still so problematic for so many. With the rise of QAnon and elected members of congress like Marjorie Taylor Greene, antisemitism has somehow crept into the mainstream, especially in America, and a lot of it still seems to go unchecked. As an observant Jew himself, he looks at all the ways his faith, and people's reaction to it, impacts his life and the ways in which society still fails to understand the issues many Jews like him have to live with.

Debut novel set in an unnamed British city, a few years from now. Writer Luke Kennard imagines what life might be like for young people from the squeezed middle-class if society continues along its current economic path.
Thirty-something Karl has avoided a jail sentence for unwittingly aiding a credit card skimmer. Instead, he and his wife Genevieve have been offered a place on The Transition - a six month 'rehabilitation programme' in which they will live rent-free with two mentors, Stu and Janna, who will help them get back on their feet. It's an organisation he's never heard of before but, when they arrive for their first briefing, Karl is surprised to see how large the HQ is, and how well established.

TUE 14:30 The Grace of Jeff Buckley (b048hxpk)
Since his desperately early death in May 1997, there's been an inevitable mythologising about the life and music of Jeff Buckley. Perhaps it's not surprising that in the posthumous rush to acknowledge his genius, memories have been clouded or, retrospectively, given a silver lining.
The quiet, uncertain foundations of his reputation were laid on a solo tour of Europe three years earlier, in March 1994 - and, in particular, during one day. On the 18th March, Buckley was scheduled for a photo shoot (with Kevin Westenberg), an appearance on BBC GLR and his first proper London concert, at a folk club called Bunjies.
In 'The Grace of Jeff Buckley', those who were there speak for the first time about the man and his music: Buckley's American manager Dave Lory, record company owner Steve Abbott, booking agent Emma Banks and photographer Kevin Westenberg share intimate memories that have so far not featured in the Buckley biography.
And the programme also includes rare archive: the GLR radio session that has not been heard since that live broadcast in 1994 - including an astonishing version of 'Grace' - and, exclusively, a private interview that Buckley recorded on the eve of this tour but decided not to release.
Together, these glimpses offer a portrait of a young man whose voice and musicianship, as well as his irresistible charisma and the trauma of his early death, touched millions.

Mendelssohn's Octet
This exploration of the impact that Mendelssohn's Octet has had on different people's lives, demonstrates the healing power of music in a variety of situations around the world.
Mendelssohn wrote his Octet for double string quartet in 1825 when he was only 16 years old. Despite his youth, this is a mature and brilliant piece of music described in this programme by the interviewees as "carnivalesque", "a romp", "a party".
Choreographer Bill T Jones describes the way in which the Octet showed his company how to keep living during the onslaught of AIDS in the 80's. Cellist Raphael and violinist Elizabeth Wallfisch talk about falling in love whilst learning this music in the 70's. South Korean Lisa Kim tells a story about going on tour with the New York Philharmonic to North Korea and her intense fear and mistrust being replaced by wonder when they played the Octet with a North Korean Quartet. And Matthew Trusler describes the importance of playing this work after the death of his son.
The recording of the Mendelssohn Octet featured in the programme is by the Emerson String Quartet on Deutsche Gramophon.

The Neck
In 19th-century Whitby, a magician prepares to compete with Harry Houdini at a major international magic convention. When a ship carrying a cargo of fifty coffins runs aground on the town's beach, he suspects Houdini of pulling a huge publicity stunt.
In this second series, the comedy troupe Peepolykus assume the roles of minor characters in great works of fiction and derail the plot of the book through their hapless buffoonery.
Peepolykus (pronounced people-like-us) has exported its brand of irreverent comic theatre to over 100 towns and cities across four continents, often under the auspices of the British Council. The company's varied CV includes two tours of Bangladesh, winning the audience award at the Tehran Arts Festival, performing to royalty in Brunei, to Indian statespeople in the Himalayas, a truly disastrous run in Barbados, an unforgettable stint on The Price is Right in Australia and other occasional bits of telly for the BBC. Their theatre scripts are licensed world wide and their award-winning musical with NYMT:UK is pencilled for re-launch. The company has also played for 3 months in the West End and collaborated with numerous organisations including Neal Street Productions, Aardman, NT, The Kevin Spacey Foundation and currently with Brunel University on Stuck - working with schools to adopt improvisation into the curriculum. Past forays on Radio 4 have included a co-penned series with Rik Mayall, a star-studded adaptation of A Christmas Carol and a live recording of The Hound of the Baskervilles. Peepolykus is produced by Eleanor Lloyd Productions.

Series 3
Episode 6
A Foghorn Company production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in July 2016.

THU 07:00 Mae Martin's Guide to 21st Century Addiction (b09czrbc)
Why Are Some More Susceptible Than Others?
Mae Martin is kicking the habit.
Award-winning stand-up and Edinburgh comedy award nominee 2017 Mae Martin presents a brand new series for Radio 4.
Mae's exploring how we as a society think about addiction, and on a personal level, trying to understand who she is now she's no longer addicted to anything. Through the lens of her own experience, Mae Martin's Guide to 21st Century Addiction follows Mae chronologically through a lifetime of obsessive behaviour and addiction with all her characteristic wit and levity.
Episode 2 - Why are some people more susceptible to addiction than others? And what can we do about it?
Sober, un-obsessed, and single for the first time in her life, Mae is asking: Who am I when I'm NOT addicted? And what's next? Mae looks at how society views addiction and recovery, and what connections we can make between identifying why people feel the need to self-soothe, and helping them on the road to recovery in a compassionate way.

THU 07:30 John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme (m000vypf)
Series 9
Episode 2
The ninth series of John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme is very different to the previous eight. It's still written by John Finnemore, "one of our best sketch writers", (The Observer), and performed by him with "a great supporting cast of Margaret Cabourn-Smith, Simon Kane, Lawry Lewin and Carrie Quinlan" (The Telegraph), and there are still sketches and songs. But, with no live studio audience this year, John has taken the opportunity to try something completely new
Every episode in this series of Souvenir Programme is made up of scenes from one person's life, played in reverse order. There's no narrative to the episode; it's still a sketch show, not a sitcom... but the sketches in each episode all happened to one person, played by one member of the cast, over the course of their lifetime.
Episode two is all about Deborah, and takes place between a catchup Zoom in lockdown one, and a bedtime story she was told in 1962.
John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme started in 2011 and quickly established itself as "One of the most consistently funny sketch shows for quite some time" (The Guardian), and "One of the funniest and most inventive new radio comedy shows of recent years" (The Daily Mail).

THU 14:30 Burrell's Bequest (b0457snm)
In 1944 William Burrell gifted his extraordinary art collection to the City of Glasgow. Alvin Hall reveals the story of the shipping magnate who made a huge cultural impact in Glasgow, yet remains himself a shadowy figure, a 'Victorian magpie' eclipsed by the splendour of his collection.
Burrell amassed the most outstanding range of Degas' works anywhere in Europe; a huge range of Chinese and Islamic Art; plus tapestries and sculptures to rival the collections of the world's top museums. 70 years ago, he stipulated in his bequest that the collection should never be loaned overseas. Debate is currently raging over whether this highly unusual collection should be allowed to travel to other museums and galleries around the world.
The imposing Pollock House sits in parkland 3 miles from Glasgow. Here again, the terms of Burrell's request were challenged. He insisted that the collection shouldn't be located within 14 miles of Glasgow, concerned about the effects of air pollution on the exhibits. After his death, this was overturned when the Pollock site became available - the conclusion being that air pollution is less of a factor nowadays. A similar argument is being used in the current debate, with air travel and cutting edge techniques for the transportation of art minimising the risks.
This raises interesting legal questions - and also provides a peg to dig deeper into the little-known life of the man behind the collection, and the fine art of transporting art. Financier and art collector, Alvin Hall visits Glasgow's much-loved Burrell Museum in Pollok Park and, by tracing the journey of the objects of the collection, gains an insight into the character of an extraordinary man, who helped transform the fortunes of the city where he'd amassed his own fortune.

Series 1
The Confession of Marian Keyes
Actor, comedian and broadcaster Stephen Mangan presents a comedy chat show about shame and guilt.
Each week Stephen invites a different eminent guest into his virtual confessional box to make three 'confessions'. This is a cue for some remarkable storytelling, and surprising insights.
We’re used to hearing celebrity interviews where stars are persuaded to show off about their achievements and talk about their proudest moments. Stephen is not interested in that. He doesn’t want to know what his guests are proud of, he wants to know what they’re ashamed of. That’s surely the way to find out what really makes a person tick. Stephen and his guest reflect with empathy and humour on things like why we get embarrassed, where our shame thresholds should be, and the value of guilt.
This week the prolific novelist and writer Marian Keyes confesses, from her home in Dublin, details of a disservice she did that still haunts her 20 years after the event. She also tells tales of a lost glove and of Joan of Arc at a fancy dress ball.
Other guests in this series include Dr Phil Hammond, Cariad Lloyd, Joan Bakewell, Suzi Ruffell, Phil Wang and Alastair Campbell.
Written and presented by Stephen Mangan
With extra material by Nick Doody
Devised with Dave Anderson and produced by Frank Stirling
