Frank Turner on Joseph Grimaldi
Frank Turner chooses Joseph Grimaldi, the first celebrity of Pantomime who changed the face of Clowning forever. Matthew Parris presents, and Mattie Faint is the expert.
Grimaldi was born into a theatrical family, making his stage debut aged two dressed as a monkey and being flung around the stage on the end of a chain by his tyrannical father. The chain snapped but Grimaldi survived, making the papers and turning Grimaldi into a little celebrity. His performances as 'Clown', combining acrobatics, satire and music, made him a big draw for the crowds, and his role in 'Mother Goose' turned him into a huge star.
He developed the make-up we now associate with clowns but behind this iconic look was a man suffering from depression, extreme physical disintegration and a series of personal tragedies.
Frank Turner, former punk and now folk singer-songwriter, sees himself primarily as an entertainer and has developed an interest in Pantomime and Music Hall. For him, Grimaldi gave everything to his audiences and physically destroyed himself in the process - something he sees as honourable. He describes Grimaldi's farewell speech as one of the most beautiful eulogies to the business of being a performer.

The Real Summer of Love
1967 saw the so-called Summer of Love, when thousands descended on Haight Ashbury suburb in San Franciso with their flower power, wacky fashions, drugs and hippy anti-establishment message which soon spread around the world.
But what did it all mean to British people?
Historian and writer Dominic Sandbrook argues that, for the majority in Britain, the Summer of Love and even 1960s Swinging London was a party happening somewhere else.
With the economy running into trouble, Harold Wilson's government devalued the pound. All was not well in British industry, with unofficial wildcat strikes and the country's ports paralysed by a 10-week strike. Dockers like Colin Ross, his young wife and baby struggled to feed themselves. Divisions in society were evident whether, as Colin puts it, 'between the haves and have-nots' or in multi-racial communities like Brixton.
Yet the '60s brought a new sense of freedom, tolerance and colour to people's monochrome daily lives. Tourists flocked to London fashion haunts such as Carnaby Steet and, in 1967, The Beatles' Sgt Pepper was declared album of the decade while barefoot songstress Sandi Shaw won the Eurovision Song Contest.
As a pop columnist, Virginia Ironside seemed to have it all. But, as liberated as she appeared, she felt pressure from the permissive society. She had two abortions, one illegally in a Harley Street clinic.
In 1967, laws came in legalising abortion and homosexuality. The same year saw the new town Milton Keynes which, although not quite the countercultural utopia San Francisco hippies had hoped for, still represented a kind of idealism - a vision of a suburban good life in the heart of the countryside.

New Zealand had several species of flightless bird living across the islands, all of which are now extinct, bar one. The Kiwi has become one of those species iconic of the country, like the Koala to Australia, the Giraffe to Africa and the Alpaca to South America. Historically, New Zealand didn't have ground predators such as wild cats and stoats - which allowed birds to exploit living on the ground. Being flightless in New Zealand was a good way to be a bird.
Having filmed Kiwis, Sir David Attenborough muses on the niche the Kiwi occupies on the ground. He argues the Kiwi behaves more like a mammal than a bird, but what mammal do you think, in Attenborough's view, the Kiwi most resembles?

Series 7
The Cataclysm Sentence
Radiolab is a Peabody-award winning show about curiosity. Where sound illuminates ideas, and the boundaries blur between science, philosophy, and the human experience.
One day in 1961, the famous physicist Richard Feynman stepped in front of a Caltech lecture hall and posed this question to a group of undergraduate students: “If, in some cataclysm, all of scientific knowledge were to be destroyed, and only one sentence was passed on to the next generation of creatures, what statement would contain the most information in the fewest words?”
Radiolab explores, when in peril, what’s the one sentence you would want to pass on to the next generation?
Jad Abumrad and the Radiolab team investigate a strange world.

Losing Patients
Nigel Planer and returns in the Health Service satire by Dr Phil Hammond and David Spicer. The Polyoaks surgery is plagued by strikes, endless new management initiatives, staff shortages, militant patients, eight day weeks, privatisation – and all these things are entirely their fault, apparently.
The dysfunctional Bristol surgery run by warring doctors, brothers Roy and Hugh Thornton (Nigel Planer and Simon Greenall), alternates between embracing and collapsing under reforms. They’re a nurse down, they’ve got to slash their budget and there’s a new Head of the local Clinical Commissioning Group who eats GPs for breakfast (Margaret Cabourn-Smith).
The practice’s calamitous ‘celebrity’ Dr Jeremy (David Westhead), who doesn’t know what a Clinical Commissioning Group is, continues to dodge alimony payments, malpractice suits and the new practice Nurse Monica (Polly Frame). Nurse Monica is on exchange from NHS Scotland and is fuelled by a borderline psychotic contempt for patients and colleagues alike.
In this first episode of the series, the staff of Polyoaks are roped into spearheading a new anti-obesity campaign to save lives, self respect and money.

Thordis . . . . . Alison Belbin
Osvif . . . . . John Dougall

Hallbjorn . . . . . Finlay Robertson
By Lucy Catherine

Gudrun's Saga is based on the famous Icelanders' saga known as The Laxdoela Saga. Written in the 13th century, it tells of people in the Breiðafjörður area of Iceland from the late 9th century to the early 11th century. The saga particularly focuses on a love triangle between Gudrun, Kjartan and Bolli. Kjartan and Bolli grow up together but the love they both have for Gudrun causes enmity between them and, in the end, their deaths. The Laxdæla saga remains popular and appreciated for its poetic beauty and pathetic sentiment. Since the saga has often been regarded as an unusually feminine saga, it has been speculated that it was composed by a woman.
Kate Phillips makes her radio debut as Gudrun. Previous roles include Jane Seymour in Wolf Hall, Linda in Peaky Blinders and Lise in War & Peace, all on BBC1.
Lucy Catherine has written extensively for BBC Radio Drama, including Friday Plays, Classic Serial adaptations and Woman’s Hour series. Her 95' adaptation of THE MASTER AND MARGARITA by Mikhail Bulgakov was broadcast in early 2015 and won the BBC ‘Best Audio Drama (Adapted); her 2 x 60' adaptation of Mary Shelley’s FRANKENSTEIN was broadcast in December 2012 as well as her half hour ‘Gothic Horror’ original LOOTED. Original 10 x 14' Woman’s Hour drama series HALFWAY HERE and 2 x 45' Afternoon Drama in the series ‘Riot Girls’, SUSAN AND EMMA were broadcast in 2016. Other recent commissions for Radio 4 include BOY and GOING SOLO, adapted from Roald Dahl’s autobiography; LIGHTS, CAMERA, KIDNAP! based on a true story about Kim Jong Il.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in November 2016.
MON 14:30 A Mix-Tape for Gus (b04kbjhs)
Young composer Emily Levy sorts through the mix-tapes which her brother Gus made for her, and considers their power both to hurt and to heal since his premature death in an accident.
When she was growing up in Oxford, the young composer and musician Emily Levy learned much about music from her adored older brother, Gus. He would make her compilation tapes which brought together his passionate and eclectic taste. When he went off to university, the tape-making continued and soon they were also attending gigs and festivals together.
Then Gus died in an accident.
Five years on, Emily has begun to listen back to the mix-tapes.
She speaks with some of Gus's closest friends about his passion for music and his particular talent at bringing together surprising genres and artists - not to mention his love of juggling to music.
She finds solace in the discovery that sharing Gus' music tastes with others bestows on him a kind of immortality.
And she reflect on how, in our era of musical choices made by computer algorithm, the death of someone dear to us represents the loss of a unique, human algorithm.
Finally, Emily composes a short piece of music to contribute to a programme which is, in itself, her own Mix-Tape for Gus.

Meanwhile, Dr Janussen (Cassie Layton) has discovered a message from Virginia (Rachel Atkins) revealing the terrible secret that turned her into a broccoli monster.
As Troy (Freddie Fox) and Guuuurk (Kevin Eldon) join the not-quite-romantic pair while fleeing the merciless cellar defences, Troy inadvertently presses the wrong lift button and they find themselves heading pell mell....for the Moon.

Uses of Literacy Now
The writer and critic DJ Taylor assesses Richard Hoggart's masterpiece The Uses of Literacy, a colossal book that inspired a slew of post-war histories, as well as Coronation Street and the poet Tony Harrison's 'Them and Uz'. It was the book that inspired Alan Bennett to write. Hoggart was born into great poverty in Leeds and wrote movingly about this early life and the people - mainly women - who inspired him. A scholarship boy, he wrote about the emotional consequences of moving from one class to another. He also offered a searing critique of the burgeoning mass media, expressing his concerns that the new literacy was in danger of being swamped by a popular press that carefully suppressed anything liable to encourage readers to think about the environment they inhabit, rather than simply wallow in its material comforts.
Contributors include the author of Estates and Respectable, Lynsey Hanley, the historian David Kynaston, the novelist David Lodge and the playwright Alan Bennett.
Producer: Nicola Swords.

Claire's job hunt falters as she becomes distracted by family responsibilities and a growing concern about her relationship with Luke.
The comic debut novel by Lisa Owens, depicting a life unravelling in minute and spectacular ways - and voicing the questions we've all asked ourselves but never dared to say out loud.
Thirtysomething Claire Flannery has quit her job to discover her true vocation, only to realise that she has no idea how to go about finding it. In her muddled but somehow impeccable logic she discovers that, 'the more time you have, the less time you have'. As the weeks stretch into months with nothing to show but an overflowing internet search history and a growing rift with her mother, Claire finds herself sinking under the pressure.
The author Lisa Owens was born in 1985 and grew up in Glasgow and Hertfordshire. After graduating, she spent six years working in publishing before leaving to complete an MA in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia. Not Working is her first novel.

The University of York
A funny and dynamic quiz show hosted by Steve Punt - this week from the University of York, with specialist subjects including History of Art, Theatre, TV and Film Studies and Physics, and questions ranging from Bartok to La Belle Et La Bête via David Bowie and the Chinese Renmimbi.
The programme is recorded on location at a different University each week, and it pits three Undergraduates against three of their Professors in an original and fresh take on an academic quiz.
The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the Highbrow and Lowbrow round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of television, sport, and quite possibly Justin Bieber. In addition, the Head-to-Head rounds see students take on their Professors in their own subjects, offering plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both sides.
Other Universities featured in this series include Gloucestershire, Chester, Birmingham City, Bath and Glasgow.
Produced by David Tyler.

Faure Requiem
"He wanted it to be something that's consoling and helpful. It's the end of their lives where they can rest in peace".
World renowned choral conductor Sir David Willcocks, shares his personal reflections on the Faure Requiem alongside those for whom the music has comforted and inspired. Known for its peaceful and hopeful nature the Faure Requiem has been called 'The lullaby of death'. Whilst Gabriel Faure himself never spoke directly about what inspired his interpretation of the Requiem, author and biographer Jessica Duchen has speculated that it may have been born out of his experience as a soldier during the Franco-Prussian war. In this edition of Soul music, personal stories of conflict and deliverance are shared from across the decades. Reaching from the beaches of Normandy to the plains of Afghanistan and into the skies of Salisbury.
Faure composed the first version of the work, which he called "un petit Requiem" with five movements, of which the Pie Jesu and In Paradisum have become arguably the most popular. "Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest.".

WED 11:00 Sisters in Satire: The Pioneering Women of Comedy (m000tf7d)
3. Looking at Linda and Where's the F in News
From the dawn of broadcast comedy, women played a vital but largely overlooked role; more in the background rather than the forefront. What impact did the sisters of satire from the 60’s and 70’s have on the comedy we know today and what was their cultural influence? In the less enlightened sixties and seventies, women were often the butt of the joke, rather than making them.
Just because they weren’t the stars of the show didn’t mean their influence wasn’t felt. June Whitfield, Eleanor Bron and Miriam Margolyes were all quietly but firmly making their name in comedies such as The Glums, The Establishment Club and The Betty Witherspoon Show. These women paved the way for comedians and actors such as Jan Ravens, Meera Syal and Linda Smith.
Samira Ahmed in conversation with actor and director Arabella Weir, former radio producer and novelist Lissa Evans discusses some of the best sitcoms from the Radio 4 archives and listen again to the The Betty Witherspoon Show, Week Ending and Victoria Wood – As Seen On TV and assess the impact these funny women have had on contemporary comedy and the extent of their satirical legacy.

WED 14:30 Sex and the Single Girl (b018flpg)
Helen Gurley Brown, who died in August, was perhaps best known for her long editorship of US Cosmopolitan Magazine. She took a failing literary rag and turned it into the slick, sexy ladies' glossy we know today. Before that she wrote a ground-breaking guide for the unmarried professional woman, "Sex and the Single Girl". First published in 1962, it encouraged women to embrace the single life and offered advice from make-up to having an affair. It got more than a few people hot under the collar.
Fifty years on, Karen Krizanovich delves into the story behind the writing of the book and charts the enormous impact it had and continues to have today. "Sex and the Single Girl" sold two million copies in three weeks and went on to influence some of the greatest success stories of recent decades - Bridget Jones's Diary, Sex and the City and Mad Men among them. The success of the book then landed Helen Gurley Brown the role of Editor-in-Chief of Cosmopolitan in the mid-sixties. She went on to create the "Cosmo girl" and defined the magazine's now instantly recognizable style of lipsticks and sex tips.
Presenter and single girl-about-town Karen will take a leaf out of Helen Gurley Brown's study on "how to stay single in superlative style" and will meet the writers, journalists, film and TV personalities it has inspired along the way, including Mad Men creator Mathew Weiner.
A fun, cheeky and sexy look at the changing status of the single woman through the five decades from its 1962 publication, as expressed through the books, TV and films "Sex and the Single Girl" has inspired.

Series 8
Instalment 1
What with the whole world grinding to a viral halt and everything, this special series of essays and diary entries is recorded at the Sussex home of the world-renowned storyteller.
In 2021, it's 25 years since David Sedaris first shared his very particular world view with the listeners to BBC Radio 4, having brought us The SantaLand Diaries back in 1996. In this eighth series of Meet David Sedaris, he continues to entertain with sardonic wit and incisive social critiques.
David Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humour writers and, in 2019, was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that he's a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.
Sedaris's first book, Barrel Fever (1994), which included The SantaLand Diaries, was a critical and commercial success, as were his follow-up efforts, Naked (1997), Holidays on Ice (1997) and Me Talk Pretty One Day (2000). He became known for his bitingly funny recollections of his youth, family life and travels, making semi-celebrities out of his parents and siblings.
David Sedaris has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. His latest international best-selling books include a collection of stories entitled Calypso, an edited selection of diary entries Theft By Finding, and a 'greatest hits' selection called The Best Of Me.

Religion
iGOD is a highly original and funny new late-night comedy series for Radio 4. It stars Simon Day (The Fast Show) and David Soul (Starsky & Hutch) and is written by one of the head writers of the BAFTA award-winning The Thick Of It, Sean Gray and produced by Simon Nicholls (Ed Reardon's Week / News At Bedtime).
We all worry about the end of the world, as economists and environmentalists speak in apocalyptic terms everyday. iGOD says that trying to predict the end of the world is as pointless as moisturising an elephant's elbow.
In each episode, an unnamed, all-seeing narrator (David Soul - Starsky and Hutch) shows us that it is stupid to be worrying, as he looks back at some of the most entertaining apocalypses on parallel Earths.
Each week the population of a different parallel world is accidentally wiped out by an ordinary bloke called IAN (Simon Day).
In this week's episode a parallel earth is obliterated when Ian inadvertently mucks up global religion.
With a full-range of sound effects and wonderfully funny and surreal twists, iGOD will be a true aural extravaganza.

Jacob Hawley: Class Act
Stevenage soft lad Jacob Hawley left his hometown behind a decade ago and has ascended Britain's social class system, moving to London and forging a career in comedy - just in time for commissioners to decide they want more working class voices. He has now quit the oat milk lattes, drawn a nike tick on to his chinos and re-adopted the glottle stop.
In this stand-up comedy performance, Jacob dissects his journey from working class banter boy to Inner-London feminist. This is politics for idiots, feminism for lads, love stories for louts and self-care for those who don't bother.
Are blokes dismissed as bad-feminists purely because they lack the correct language? Are working class people's mental health problems dismissed because our society values tortured artists over tortured cleaners? And most importantly, is it even worth going to a protest if you don’t tell everyone about it?

FRI 14:30 Hemingway Days (b013f96m)
Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway, who together launched the Red or Dead label, have long been admirers of Robin and Lucienne Day, a husband and wife design team from another era.
Wayne looks back at the impact of Robin and Lucienne Day on post war Britain and how they emerged from the FOB to spearhead our understanding of modern design.
He talks to colleagues, friends and family about their vision and their drive and explores some of the less well known areas of their personal lives and their creative partnership.
Lucienne was a textile designer. Inspired by abstract art, she pioneered the use of bright, optimistic, abstract patterns.
Robin was a furniture designer best known for his injection moulded polypropylene stacking chair, of which over 20 million have been manufactured.
The Days shared a vision of good, affordable design for all. Together they established themselves as Britain's most celebrated post-war designer couple, and have often been compared to their US contemporaries, Charles Eames and Ray Eames.
But despite their growing fame in the 50s and 60s they remained uncomfortable with the public attention they received. They shared a passion for nature and spent more and more time outdoors. Lucienne drew much of her inspiration from plants and flowers and Robin was a talented and obsessive mountain climber.
In this programme Wayne reflects on the many layers to Robin and Lucienne and, with his wife Gerardine, he draws on their own experiences of working as a husband and wife creative team.
