SAT 02:30 Invalid Password - The Password, A History Of Failure (b03g9dqg)
Passwords have never been weaker and hackers have never been more powerful. In 2012, a computer cluster was unveiled that can cycle through as many as 350 billion password guesses per second.
For most people, passwords are the first and only line of defence for confidential information online. We've been taught that passwords are the answer - as long as they are elaborate enough.
Passwords:
* must not follow any predictable pattern
* must not reference any events you have personally witnessed
* must be a closely guarded personal secret
* must not be something you would use as a password just to get past a password reset check
* must be impossible to remember
But, today, that's becoming a fantasy - businesses, banks, schools, governments and individuals have all been hacked.
In this social history of the password, Tim Samuels travels to Las Vegas for a password conference. Here he meets the man responsible for the most popular cracking software, a former US Army interrogator who now builds super computers and a passionate Norwegian who believes passwords are here to stay.
Discover how easy it is to crack Tim's password and witness the elaborate steps some people go through to protect their online information.
Have we reached a stage where passwords that are secure enough to resist hacking are too hard to remember? If passwords are living on borrowed time, what can protect us online?

SAT 09:00 Ross Noble's Newcastle (b0755pvx)
From the bistro bar of Newcastle's Tyne Theatre, where he performed his very first hometown gig – Ross Noble explores Geordie comedy past and present.
Featuring a candid interview with Sarah Millican, an exploration of happiness with Jason Cook and a trip back in time to the humour of old with Percy Douglas and Bobby Thompson.
Self-deprecating, quick witted and warm, there's much to be said for Geordie humour that sets it apart from the comedy in the rest of the British Isles. Newcastle is a city of almost pathological friendliness - no-one takes themselves too seriously and everyone is as quick to poke fun at themselves as at others. Whether you put it down to the cheeriness of the accent or the egalitarian mentality of your average Novocastrian, there's no denying Geordies want people to enjoy themselves as much as they do, and that true homespun North Eastern humour has its tongue placed firmly in its cheek.
Multi-award winning Cramlington born stand up comic Ross Noble is one of British comedy's biggest household names – a TV and radio regular, with numerous sell-out stage shows.
The carefully selected archive includes:
* Ross Noble On....
* Jason Cook, Gavin Webster and Kai Humphries, MacAulay & Co at the Edinburgh Fringe

Good Luck Professor Spiegelhalter
Whether we believe in luck or not, we do use the word- a lot! More as a figure of speech than an article of faith perhaps, but some do pray for luck, others fantasize about it - and bad luck or misfortune is a staple of comedy.
Can luck be said to exist as some force in our lives and if so, what is its nature? How have people thought about luck in the past and what's changed today? Can you bring good luck upon yourself - there's a school of thought these days that thinks you can without appealing to the divine or supernatural.
Professor Spiegelhalter, the Winton professor for the public understanding of risk at Cambridge University looks at notions of luck in gambling, traces the origins of how we think about fate and fortune, the religious and psychological view of luck and how the emergence of theory of probability changed our view of it.
He is convinced by the philosopher Angie Hobbs that there is one form of luck it is rational to believe in and by psychologist Richard Wiseman that there is a secular solution to bringing about good fortune in your life.

Conversations on a Bench: Strabane - Maureen Boyle
Anna Scott-Brown hears more stories from the people who stop to sit beside her on benches around the country.
In this edition, Anna sits on a bench in Strabane on the Irish Border. Throughout the programme, a specially commissioned work by the poet Maureen Boyle draws on the voices of those passing by – and sometimes pausing on – the bench in Abercorn Square.
These hidden stories are glimpsed through snatched moments and the painful and beautiful stories people tell Anna in this busy urban setting - the carer who lost a longed for baby during pregnancy and memories of the Troubles in this hot spot on the border, those who smuggled goods across the closed border and whose relatives moved to Northern Ireland via the hiring fair that used to take place in the square.
Once an employment blackspot, how is the town faring now? And what difference will Brexit make here on the border?
Throughout the programme, Maureen Boyle’s poem interweaves a personal elegy for her grandfather who worked at the nearby Linen factory in Sion Mills and her own memories of growing up in the area.
Hidden lives are revealed and common threads recur as Anna’s gentle but insistent, and sometimes extremely direct, questions elicit poignant and profound responses from those sitting on the bench.
Presented and Produced by Anna Scott-Brown

SUN 12:30 Susan Calman - Keep Calman Carry On (b072n5xp)
Series 1
Art with Phill Jupitus
Susan Calman is the least relaxed person she knows. She has no down time, no hobbies (unless you count dressing up your cats in silly outfits) and her idea of relaxation is to play Grand Theft Auto, an hour into which she is in a murderous rage with sky high blood pressure. Her wife had to threaten to divorce her to make her go on holiday last year. Her first for four years. But she's been told by the same long-suffering wife, that unless she finds a way to switch off, and soon, she's going to be unbearable.
So Susan is going to look at her options and try to immerse herself in the pursuits that her friends find relaxing, to find her inner zen and outer tranquillity. Each week she will ditch the old Susan Calman and attempt to find the new Susan Calm, in a typically British leisure pursuit.
This time, she visits the Scottish National Portrait Gallery with Phill Jupitus.
Keep Calman Carry On is an audience stand up show in which Susan reports on how successful she's been - both at relaxing and at the pursuit itself - as well as playing in and discussing a handful of illustrative clips from her efforts. It's an attempt to find out how people find solace or sanctuary in these worlds and how Susan can negotiate her own place in them.

Episode 1
Chris Packham is a naturalist, nature photographer and author, best known for his television work. But in his lyrical and painfully honest new memoir, he reveals the life-events which would eventually shape him and change him forever.
Chris brings to life his childhood in the 1970s, from his bedroom bursting with birds’ eggs and jam jars, to his feral adventures. But throughout his story is the search for freedom, meaning and acceptance in a world that didn’t understand him.
Chris begins his recollections as an introverted, unusual young boy, isolated by his obsessions and a loner at school.
This unconventional and uncompromising memoir moves back and forth through time, capturing a child’s view of the 60s and 70s – the music, the clothes, the cars – alongside recent, more exposing recollections from adulthood.

MON 14:30 The Sad Story of Jim Thorpe (b01kbhjt)
This programme explores the sad and controversial life of Jim Thorpe - the American Indian who was the star of the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, where the Swedish King famously told him 'Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world'.
Thorpe had grown up on the Sac and Fox Indian reservation in Oklahoma and then, as a teenager, was sent 1500 miles away to a boarding school in Pennsylvania whose purpose was to 'civilise' Indian children by eradicating their culture. Its motto was 'Kill the Indian and save the man'. The pupils were forced to wear military uniforms, have short hair, and were punished if they spoke their own languages. 'The last phase of the Indian wars was fought in the classroom', says one contributor.
Thorpe was saved by sport and became the school's great star at both athletics and American football. He's often described as the 'first international sporting superstar'. But in 1913 it came out that he had been paid a few dollars to play minor-league baseball and the elite amateurs who ran US athletics rushed to condemn him as a professional. He was summarily stripped of his medals. But the public were on his side and his status in America is that of a popular hero victimised by those in power.
He went on to become the first great professional football player, but he could never cope with fame and died in near poverty in 1953. His widow arranged for him to be buried in a small town in Pennsylvania which offered to build a memorial to him. They town even changed its name to 'Jim Thorpe', but his Indian tribe are pursuing a legal battle to have his remains returned to Oklahoma.

The Real Summer of Love
It's 50 years since the so-called Summer of Love, when thousands descended on Haight Ashbury suburb in San Franciso with their flower power, wacky fashions, drugs and hippy anti-establishment message which soon spread around the world. But what did it all mean to British people?
Historian and writer Dominic Sandbrook argues that, for the majority in Britain, the Summer of Love and even 1960s Swinging London was a party happening somewhere else.
In 1967, with the economy running into trouble, Harold Wilson's government devalued the pound. All was not well in British industry, with unofficial wildcat strikes and the country's ports paralysed by a 10-week strike. Dockers like Colin Ross, his young wife and baby struggled to feed themselves. Divisions in society were evident whether, as Colin puts it, 'between the haves and have-nots' or in multi-racial communities like Brixton.
Yet the '60s brought a new sense of freedom, tolerance and colour to people's monochrome daily lives. Tourists flocked to London fashion haunts such as Carnaby Steet and, in 1967, The Beatles' Sgt Pepper was declared album of the decade while barefoot songstress Sandi Shaw won the Eurovision Song Contest.
As a pop columnist, Virginia Ironside seemed to have it all. But, as liberated as she appeared, she felt pressure from the permissive society. She had two abortions, one illegally in a Harley Street clinic.
In 1967, laws came in legalising abortion and homosexuality. The same year saw the new town Milton Keynes which, although not quite the countercultural utopia San Francisco hippies had hoped for, still represented a kind of idealism - a vision of a suburban good life in the heart of the countryside.

Episode 2
Chris Packham is a naturalist, nature photographer and author, best known for his television work. But in his lyrical and emotionally honest new memoir, he reveals the life-events which would eventually shape him, and change him forever.
Chris brings to life his childhood in the 1970s, from his bedroom bursting with birds’ eggs and jam jars, to his feral adventures. But throughout his story is the search for freedom, meaning and acceptance in a world that didn’t understand him.
Today, Chris continues to remember his difficult childhood, discovers the taste of tadpoles and encounters some bullies.
This unconventional and uncompromising memoir moves back and forth through time, capturing a child’s view of the 60s and 70s – the music, the clothes, the cars - alongside recent, more exposing recollections from adulthood.

The Mottershaws of the Sheffield Photo Co. are not as famous as Hollywood but they made their mark.
Filmmaker Penny Woolcock brings the Mottershaws' most pioneering work back to life - a little-known silent film called Daring Daylight Burglary that they say influenced the classic Great Train Robbery.
Making it, the Mottershaws worked out how to tell fictional stories on location and tell them well: chase sequences, revenge motives, trains leaving stations pursued and just missed or caught as they pull away... these are just some of the thriller tropes we take for granted now: the Mottershaws made them work in 1903.
Two generations of Mottershaw did it, both called Frank, using a camera built by young Arthur. Penny meets the next two generations of Mottershaw, both still in pictures, father and son, both called John.
The Mottershaws' early films sold internationally, but then the States - with its sunshine and crowds and money - took over from European independents like the Sheffield Photo Co. What happened to the filmmakers, after their few years of success and to the Sheffield Photo Co?
With Judith Buchanan, Professor of Film and Literature at the University of York and Audio Descriptions by Radio 3's Louise Fryer.

Ma Vlast
At the core of Czech cultural identity is this week's piece - Ma Vlast by Bedrich Smetana. Written in the late 19th century, it's a series of six symphonic poems. For a western audience the most popular and best loved is Vltava, a soundscape which conjures up vivid images of the river which runs through Prague.
Jan Kaplan is a Czech born film-maker who has lived in the UK since 1968. He describes the 'educational concerts' he had to attend as a young boy when - bored to tears - he would endure long performances of Smetana's music. However, as an adult living in exile, his experience of Czech culture was tinged with a remote sense of patriotism and he grew to appreciate his national composer. When - following the 1989 Velvet revolution - he was eventually able to return home, he witnessed one of the most famous and moving performances of Ma Vlast at Smetana Hall in 1990.
Also at that concert was musicologist, Professor Jan Smaczny, who describes his memories of that evening, and explains the history and mythology portrayed in Ma Vlast.

WED 11:00 Sisters in Satire: The Pioneering Women of Comedy (m000t5pc)
2. Meera and Linda
From the dawn of broadcast comedy, women played a vital but largely overlooked role; more in the background rather than the forefront. What impact did the sisters of satire from the 60’s and 70’s have on the comedy we know today and what was their cultural influence? In the less enlightened sixties and seventies, women were often the joke, rather than making them.
Just because they weren’t the stars of the show didn’t mean their influence wasn’t felt. June Whitfield, Eleanor Bron and Miriam Margolyes were all quietly but firmly making their name in comedies such as The Glums, The Establishment Club and The Betty Witherspoon Show. These women paved the way for comedians and actors such as Jan Ravens, Meera Syal and Linda Smith.
Samira Ahmed in conversation with actor and director Arabella Weir, former radio producer and novelist Lissa Evans and stand-up comedian and actress Tiffany Stevenson discuss some of the best sitcoms from the Radio 4 archives and listen again to the joys of Week Ending, Goodness Gracious Me! and a Brief History of Time Wasting and assess the impact these funny women have had on contemporary comedy and the extent of their satirical legacy.
This programme takes us on a comic journey from the early 1970’s to the present day and celebrates women in satire.

WED 14:30 This Is Not Magritte (b011vh4t)
Richard Strange broadcasts from Magritte's former apartment and the Magritte Museum in Brussels to piece together the exceptional vision and by contrast, determinedly ordinary life of this outwardly conventional man who constructed intriguing and bizarre images, imploring us to "put the real world on trial".
Originally broadcast to coincide with a major exhibition of Surrealist artist, Rene Magritte's work at Tate Liverpool in 2011.
Monty Python's Terry Jones holds forth about Magritte's genius for juxtaposition, eminent writer, Suzi Gablik recalls staying with the Magritte during the 1960s, Naresh Ramchandani explains why Magritte's paintings underpin advertising and artist Gavin Turk pays homage to the master.
Ever since the 1960s, we've seen Magritte's works, eager to find hidden meanings within them. But the artist fiercely resisted interpretation, imploring us to question our own inquiry and what reality we believe to be true.
His famous painting - "Ceci n'est pas une Pipe", (This Is Not A Pipe), shows the image of a pipe "You can't smoke it, you can't suck it - it's no more a pipe than an apple!" implored the artist.
"My painting is visible images which conceal nothing; they evoke mystery and, indeed, when one sees one of my pictures, one asks oneself this simple question, 'What does that mean?' It does not mean anything, because mystery means nothing either, it is unknowable."
Magritte used a language of brick walls, sky, apples, rocks, bowler-hats and drawn words, to explore how images work and how strange they are. He played with scale, perspective, shadow and illusion. A rock floats, an apple fills a room, suited men rain down on a city...
He was often mistaken as a bank clerk; his external appearance (in bowler hat) at odds with his anarchist heart.

From 1938 to 1969 the fictional crime novelist and detective Paul Temple, together with his Fleet Street journalist Steve, solved case after case in one of BBC radio's most popular series. THU 07:30 Between Ourselves with Marian Keyes (m000sz94)
Adulthood
Marian Keyes continues to be a publishing sensation - her works of fiction (Rachel's Holiday, The Break and her latest, Grown Ups, among many others) have sold in their millions, across the globe.
Marian reads selections from her non-fiction writing, in conversation with her friend, actor Tara Flynn.
She is a regular contributor to newspapers and magazines including The Sunday Times, Marie Claire and The Irish Independent. With the on-going international unpleasantness – and in the brief respite between lockdowns - this series was recorded without a studio audience at Marian’s home in County Dublin, Ireland. If you listen carefully you might hear the number 46A bus rumbling past.
Series 1 was described in The Observer as “a laugh out loud hoot” and the Daily Mail as “bright, funny and clever”, all of which is very much the plan for this second series. What we might lack in a studio audience reaction, we aim to make up for in warmth and witty, good-natured companionship.
In this final episode of the series, the theme is adulthood. The question is, are you grown up enough to hear Marian explain “How To Deal With A Hostile Hairdresser” and her experiences with “Therapies”?

THU 14:30 Songs for Madame Vasnier (b0194mvs)
Originally broadcast on the 150th anniversary of the birth of Claude Debussy, Richard Langham Smith relishes the lyrical riches of Théodore de Banville, Alfred de Musset, Paul Bourget, Théophile Gautier and Paul Verlaine, the poets Debussy chose to express his love for an older, married woman, Marie Blanche Vasnier.
Hearing her sing moved Debussy, then an impressionable young student, to create a treasury of songs specially with her voice in mind. Among the many songs he wrote for Madame Vasnier, is the unpublished "La fille aux cheveux de lin". It was the starting point of Debussy's fascination with setting words to music, an obsession that reached a high point in "Pélleas et Mélisande" some twenty years later. But it's Madame Vasnier Debussy acknowledges as "the only muse to ever inspire musical feelings", and that's he confesses, "only to talk of the musical ones!"

Frank Turner on Joseph Grimaldi
Frank Turner chooses Joseph Grimaldi, the first celebrity of Pantomime who changed the face of Clowning forever. Matthew Parris presents, and Mattie Faint is the expert.
Grimaldi was born into a theatrical family, making his stage debut aged two dressed as a monkey and being flung around the stage on the end of a chain by his tyrannical father. The chain snapped but Grimaldi survived, making the papers and turning Grimaldi into a little celebrity. His performances as 'Clown', combining acrobatics, satire and music, made him a big draw for the crowds, and his role in 'Mother Goose' turned him into a huge star.
He developed the make-up we now associate with clowns but behind this iconic look was a man suffering from depression, extreme physical disintegration and a series of personal tragedies.
Frank Turner, former punk and now folk singer-songwriter, sees himself primarily as an entertainer and has developed an interest in Pantomime and Music Hall. For him, Grimaldi gave everything to his audiences and physically destroyed himself in the process - something he sees as honourable. He describes Grimaldi's farewell speech as one of the most beautiful eulogies to the business of being a performer.

iGOD is a highly original and funny new late-night comedy series for Radio 4. It stars Simon Day (The Fast Show) and David Soul (Starsky & Hutch) and is written by one of the head writers of the BAFTA award-winning The Thick Of It, Sean Gray and produced by Simon Nicholls (Ed Reardon's Week / News At Bedtime).
We all worry about the end of the world, as economists and environmentalists speak in apocalyptic terms everyday. iGOD says that trying to predict the end of the world is as pointless as moisturising an elephant's elbow.
In each episode, an unnamed, all-seeing narrator (David Soul - Starsky and Hutch) shows us that it is stupid to be worrying, as he looks back at some of the most entertaining apocalypses on parallel Earths. Each week a different parallel world is accidentally wiped out by an ordinary bloke called Ian (Simon Day). With a full-range of sound effects and wonderfully funny and surreal twists, iGOD will be a true aural extravaganza.
In this week's episode, a parallel Earth is obliterated when a lazy Ian decides to take the afternoon off.

Episode 5
Portrait painter, Angus Lordie, observes the goings on of his neighbours and friends in and around 44 Scotland Street. In this series seven year-old Bertie Pollok has 'issues' when his domineering mother Irene organises his social life. And Irene has issues when her husband Stuart offers to take Bertie to Glasgow of all places. Local café owner Big Lou has a new love in her life whose politics hark back to the Jacobite days. And then there's Domenica – an anthropologist – trying to write a report on her most recent adventure exploring the lives of modern day pirates. An encounter with a gangster, a suspected kidnapping and the possibility of a new political leader ensure life for Scotland Street's residents is never uneventful.
Alexander McCall Smith dramatises stories from his bestselling series, 44 Scotland Street, which continues to delight readers around the world.
