SAT 01:30 'Down With Skool': The Art of Molesworth (b074x71x)
Philip Hensher explores the art of the gloriously eccentric Molesworth books.
Nigel Molesworth is one of the immortal characters of British literature - a 1950s prep-school boy, the 'goriller of 3B' and the 'curse of st custard's'.
Molesworth's diaries, written by Geoffrey Willans, first appeared in Punch and were later developed into four books, Down with Skool! (1953), How to be Topp (1954), Whizz for Atomms (1956) and Back in the Jug Agane (1959). Illustrated by Ronald Searle as a boy's school sequel to Searle's St Trinian's drawings, they are still in print today.
The books are a kind of satire of 1950s Britain as, after the war, the upper middle classes faced the onslaught of irreverence, the Welfare State and a new generation that didn’t see why authority should be respected. Molesworth’s cynical yet naive outlook on life made him popular with young and old readers in the post-war world. He was a very long way from the clean-cut school fantasies which had entertained the British before the advent of the atomic bomb.
Author Geoffrey Willans had worked as a schoolmaster and understood the cheerful cynicism of boys, while Ronald Searle's illustrative style was dark, Gothic and seething with half-hidden obsessions. Searle had spent much of the war in a Japanese concentration camp where he documented the horrors he encountered, and elaborate psychological points come through with concise and economic observation in his drawings.
With contributions from Steve Bell, Wendy Cope, Max Hastings, Mike Leigh, Chris Riddell, Martin Rowson, Gerald Scarfe and Posy Simmonds.
Producer: Melissa FitzGerald
A Blakeway production first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in March 2016.
SAT 02:00 F Scott Fitzgerald: The Lost Stories (b08sqwjc)
Salute to Lucy and Elsie
Stuart Milligan reads a previously unpublished story about honour, morals and the gulf between generations.
Taken from F Scott Fitzgerald's collection, I'd Die For You: and Other Lost Stories.
Romance, parties, cocktails and glamour - as a young writer in the 1920s F. Scott Fitzgerald gave the magazines what they wanted. He had little choice; short stories were his bread and butter. But as the author matured he yearned to explore darker territory.
This desire wasn't cushioned by wealth; The Great Gatsby hadn't sold well and as the Depression crunched in the early 30s, Fitzgerald was hit by large medical bills for both himself and his wife Zelda. Despite the financial pressures he resisted the easy censorship requested by editors, who balked at Fitzgerald's portrayal of confusing generational freedoms, sex before marriage, divorce and working women.
Growing increasingly uncompromising about deletions and sanitisations, Fitzgerald preferred to let these stories lie in wait until their time came.
Producer: Eilidh McCreadie.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in June 2017.
SAT 02:15 Friends & Foes - A Narrative History of Diplomacy (b08drjdx)
The Revolution Will Be Tweeted
Professor David Rothkopf explores how cyber diplomacy is leading to the emergence of a new diplomatic doctrine.
Digital diplomacy has become an indispensable communication tool for governments. Twitter is now used by heads of state and governments in 173 countries. More than half of the world's foreign ministries are now active on social media. Its use is now part and parcel of any diplomatic training for ambassadors and diplomats.
Professor Rothkopf examines the birth of this new cultural ecosystem, where every individual in planet is connected for the first time in a new frontier which is transforming the way our politics, economics, security and diplomacy are conducted.
He speaks with Alec Ross, Hillary Clinton's Senior Advisor for Innovation when she was Secretary of State, and Jane Holl-Lute, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security from 2009 to 2013.

SAT 02:45 Steve Boggan - Gold Fever (b05vj0r4)
Episode 5
Steve witnesses the darker side of ‘gold fever’ and finally tracks down ‘the guy’ he’s heard so much about.
Concluded by Paul Ritter and Sara Markland.
Gold - for centuries people have been entranced by the riches it promises, thousands have gone wild in their search for it, and since the Financial Crisis the price of gold has reached peaks never seen in history.
All over the world, particularly in the US, people with no experience of prospecting began shopping for shovels, pickaxes, gold pans, tents, generators, and all manner of equipment they had no idea how to use. And off they went mining.
Steve Boggan decided to follow in their footsteps. In 2013 he packed his bags and flew to San Francisco to join the 21st century's gold rush (the 'New 49ers') in a quest to understand the allure of the metal – and maybe find a bit for himself too.
He meets a selection of colourful characters - those who left desk jobs and family life behind to work by the river in scorching heat and fresh mountain air, in the hope of striking it rich. Most of them only make enough money to scrape a living, but Steve is surprised how happy they seem to be. From them, he gets a crash course in small-scale prospecting.
He also takes us back in time to the original gold rush, two centuries ago, tracing the path of the first intrepid 49ers (in particular, a woman called Sarah Royce and her family) who abandoned their roots and trekked thousands of miles across perilous terrain, risking death for the chance of riches.

Researcher Bias
A sitcom set in the Office of Local and National Statistics which, depending on who you ask, is either where the real power of government resides, or the place where fun goes to die.
In this episode, Daniel and Audrey fight over the Welfare State with the aid of a can of strong lager, a fake police uniform and a beloved British character actor.
Meet the team:
Graham Quicks is Head of the People and Places Department of the LNS. There are three things in the world that Graham will always have faith in – statistics, the supremacy of filofaxes over computers and the idea that cardigans will never go out of style.
Audrey Carr is the Survey Researcher for the department. She believes passionately that statistics should be used as a tool to help the man on the street. Fortunately for her, she's never actually met "the man in the street". She's also passionate about Jane Austen, Les Miserables and pretending that she doesn't work in an office with Daniel.
Daniel Porter is the department's Data Analyst. He used to work in the City, until the City realised he was a colossal waste of space. Daniel divides his time between manipulating statistics to further his vision of capitalism, necking energy drinks and telling people his thighs are really, really strong. He's terrible.
Mrs. Wilkins has worked as tea lady, archivist and maintenance guru for fifteen years. She knows where the bodies are buried. We must stress that that is a figure of speech.

London
"The city is about light and water for me because it interrupts them, it interrupts light and it interrupts water and when something is interrupted it reveals itself to you".
Lavinia Greenlaw is perhaps unusual in that she has lived in the same part of London for most of her life. Walking up Hampstead Heath in the first light of a winter's morning she explains how the Heath is her childhood landscape where she played with her siblings.
But it's also the point where the city and the suburbs meet: "Although there's no clear edge to London I feel that the lip of the bowl where it sits is defined by the Heath which starts out being in the city and quickly ends up in the suburbs - a very different place. I was born on the border and used to feel that I was operating in two countries".
Here she crosses the river, climbs towers and walks through the Heath to reveal her unexpected and surprising vision of London.

SUN 09:00 The Crying Book (Omnibus) (m000fz08)
Shedding tears is a universal human experience, but why - and how - do we cry?
American poet Heather Christle has lost her dear friend Bill to suicide and must now reckon with her own depression. In this personal, lyrical book she faces her grief by researching the act of crying.
In her Ohio home, Christle assembles a “crybrary” in which she investigates the science and art of tears:  from their chemical composition to their depiction in literature. Moving deftly between poetry and prose,  she lays bare her own experience. Following her preoccupation with tears back to its origins, she recalls crying in a car after being dumped; lying in tears on the bathroom floor after an argument with her husband. Anticipating the arrival of her first child, she considers the tears of infants and parents. A friend  and fellow poet dies, so Heather turns to the Internet for crying folklore and remedies for tears.
When a young Black man is shot by the police in Walmart, Heather’s investigation becomes political and she researches the power and meaning of “white lady tears”. She also mines history for attitudes to crying and mental illness by exploring the relationship between 19th century feminist writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman - who suffered from depression - and her physician Silas Weir Mitchell.
Finally, Heather visits Bill’s grave and with some help from her mother, makes peace with her own family history of depression.
The Crying Book is an honest, thought-provoking and surprising reflection on life, loss and mental illness.
Omnibus of five parts read by Alexandra Metaxa, featuring Paterson Joseph, Alibe Parsons, Oliver Soden and Sofia Pedersen.

SUN 10:10 The Listening Project (b06b3pp9)
Julie and Lois – Our Brains Work in Different Ways
Fi Glover introduces a mother and daughter who share a difficulty with learning; it’s not that they can’t, but that they do it in a way that's different. Recorded in the Booth at the Hay Festival, it's another conversation in the series that proves it's surprising what you hear when you listen.
The Listening Project is a Radio 4 initiative that offers a snapshot of contemporary Britain in which people across the UK volunteer to have a conversation with someone close to them about a subject they've never discussed intimately before. The conversations are being gathered across the UK by teams of producers from local and national radio stations who facilitate each encounter. Every conversation - they're not BBC interviews, and that's an important difference - lasts up to an hour, and is then edited to extract the key moment of connection between the participants. Most of the unedited conversations are being archived by the British Library and used to build up a collection of voices capturing a unique portrait of the UK in the second decade of the millennium. Roger Waters
From Mahler to Neil Young.
Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters shares his castaway choices with Kirsty Young.
Despite huge critical and commercial success, Roger walked away from the group in 1985 and years of acrimony followed.
They were reunited for one final performance, 20 years later, for Live 8. It was a moment many of their fans thought they would not live to see and it was, he says, highly emotional.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in May 2011.

Camouflage: Stories of Hidden Selves
True stories told live in in the USA: Sarah Austin Jenness introduces tales of secret identities and true selves.
The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.
The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.
Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.
The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.

SUN 14:30 Colum McCann - Apeirogon (Omnibus) (m000fz0b)
Episode 1
Colum McCann's epic new novel of friendship, love, loss, and belonging.
Bassam and Rami inhabit a world of conflict that colours every aspect of their daily lives, from the roads they are allowed to drive on, to the schools their daughters, Abir and Smadar, each attend, to the checkpoints, both physical and emotional, they must negotiate. Their worlds shift irreparably after ten-year-old Abir is killed by a rubber bullet and thirteen-year-old Smadar becomes the victim of suicide bombers. When Bassam and Rami learn of each other’s stories, they recognise the loss that connects them and attempt to use their grief as a weapon for peace.
In Apeirogon - named for a shape with a countably infinite number of sides - Colum McCann creates an epic novel inspired by the real experiences of Palestinian Bassam Aramin and Israeli Rami Elhanan who, after each losing a child, came together to promote peace.
Omnibus of the first five of ten episodes.

Learning to Love Dafydd
Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's radio poetry archive and chooses Learning to Love Dafydd about the Welsh language Chaucer - Dafydd ap Gellym. Presented by Gwyneth Lewis.
Gwyneth Lewis, the first Welsh Poet Laureate whose giant words light up the front of the Wales Millennium Centre, has never been able to come to terms with the great Welsh language poet Dafydd ap Gwilym.
He's the Welsh equivalent of Chaucer or Shakespeare and has been hugely influential on contemporary Welsh poetry, from Dylan Thomas to the bardic competitions on Radio Cymru. But Gwyneth's teenage self found him sexist and laddish and a representative of a tradition she rebelled against.
As a Welsh language poet Gwyneth feels she can't avoid Dafydd any longer and needs to face him head on. She visits the ruined abbey at Strata Florida in West Wales where he worked and was buried, meets songwriter and former lead singer of Catatonia Cerys Matthews and Welsh poet and language activist Menna Elfyn, and goes in search of him in the poetry competitions at the National Eisteddfod of Wales. Actor Steffan Rhodri brings Dafydd ap Gwilym's poetry to life.
Gwyneth tries to come to terms with her heritage and learn to love Dafydd - and see if she can write a poem directly to him.

MON 06:30 Comprehensively Eton (b00s96ng)
Jolyon Jenkins on the state-school boys who won scholarships to Eton. Bradley, Oscar, Joe and Rishad are bright all-rounders who went from their local comprehensive to the world's most famous school.
Eton is probably the most famous school in the world. With fees of almost £30,000 a year, it educates some of Britain's most wealthy and privileged boys. It also offers scholarships and bursaries to a small but growing number of bright and motivated boys who've been educated in the state sector.
But what does the scholarship scheme mean for the boys? How are they regarded by the fee-payers? What kind of boy does Eton want as a scholar? Do the scholarship-boys fit in at Eton, or is there a class divide? Do they stand out because their accents are different or once anonymised in the tail-coat are they woven into Eton's ancient fabric?
Bradley is from Blackpool, his parents are full-time foster carers who found out about the Eton scholarship when they read about it in 'The Sun'. Bradley started at Eton last September in what is known as 'F Block' (the equivalent is year 9 in the state sector).
Oscar Hardy is from Seaford on the south coast, a former young-mayor of Seaford and A*grade student; his comprehensive was closing its sixth form so he took a punt on an Eton scholarship - and succeeded. Jolyon hears from them, and Rishad and Joe, who all won scholarships - and significant bursaries - to attend Eton College.

How the Whale Got His Throat
How does the largest creature that has ever lived feed itself? Howard Roe and Nick Pyenson, discuss the wonders of the whale's "lunge feeding", said to be the largest biomechanical event on Earth.
Vivienne Parry presents the science behind some of Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories, with wondrous tales of how things really came to be.
Rudyard Kipling tells us how the leopard got his spots, the camel his hump, the whale his throat and so forth. But what does science make of these lyrical tales? For the most part, just-so stories are to be dismissed as the antithesis of scientific reasoning. They're ad hoc fallacies, designed to explain-away a biological or behavioural trait, more akin to folklore than the laws of science. But on closer inspection, might Kipling's fantasies contain a grain of truth? And might the "truth" as science understands it, be even more fantastic than fiction?
Vivienne meets researchers whose work on some of Kipling's 'best beloved' creatures is helping us to answer a rather inconvenient question: how do traits evolve? Why are some animals the way they are?
Excerpts from five of the Just So Stories are read by Samuel West.

TUE 06:30 The Honest Musician's Fear of Accidental Plagiarism (b00xw21s)
Many musicians have found themselves accused of stealing from another artist. It's every songwriter's biggest fear - that really great phrase or lyric you thought was all your own creation turns up in another song.
There are few musicians who would admit to stealing even if caught red handed, but what happens if the theft was unintentional? And what if you heard lines from one of your songs in someone else's work? Would you immediately reach for the lawyers phone number or would you let it go without complaint if the offending writer 'fessed up? Musicians assimilate what is around them and even the finest tunesmiths derive inspiration by drawing on and re-adapting existing popular music. So is any song really original?
As Noel Gallagher put it rather bluntly when confronted about his musical influences: "There's twelve notes in a scale and 36 chords and that's the end of it. All the configurations have been done before."
Singer and songwriter Guy Garvey, with the help of fellow songwriters Sir Tim Rice, Paul Heaton and John Bramwell, explores the legal pitfalls that can befall the honest musician and how to avoid them.

WED 06:30 Gurinder - the Indian Sequel (b00s1n43)
We're off to Goa with British film director Gurinder Chadha, who's a special guest at India's biggest and most colourful film festival, in Goa.
Her movies - Bend It Like Beckham, Bride And Prejudice, Bhaji on the Beach - are big hits in India. For millions of Indians, her portrayal of life for British Asians is the most realistic view they've had of their diasporic counterparts in the UK. Not only have her films changed our notion of what 'British' means by putting the Asian community firmly in the mainstream consciousness, but the way that Indian audiences respond to her films also tells us something about the changing relationship between India and the UK, and the Indian diaspora who live here.
As a twice migrant herself, she brings elements of Indian, Kenyan, and British themes to her work - a fusion of cinematic methods and subject matter.
In the glamorous setting of the flamboyant Goan film festival, we'll discover how huge Gurinder is there, and talk to Indian cinemagoers, directors, actors, and movie buffs about the larger than life director, her films, and how, whilst they're clad in their designer labels in a country that's a new world power, they see the British Asian community as endearingly old fashioned.

Lena Dunham/Elaine Stritch
More in depth interviews from WNYC Radio in New York hosted by Alec Baldwin.
Alec Baldwin offers a unique insight into the lives of artists, policy makers and performers, sidestepping the predictable by taking listeners inside the dressing rooms, apartments, and offices.
Concluding the series specially curated for BBC Radio 4 Extra, Alec talks with two female stars that have comedy at the heart of what they do so well.
In 2013, Alec talked to Lena Dunham, the creator of HBO’s Girls. Says when she was younger, she thought she’d be a "Gender and Women’s Studies teacher who showed movies at the occasional film festival." Instead she's trying to figure out what to wear to shoot the cover of Rolling Stone. Dunham talks with Alec about getting a dog and her first date with her boyfriend Jack Antonoff. She’s not ready for children—yet—but they are on her mind: “I was raised to think that the two most important things you could do in your life were to have a passionate, generous relationship to your work and to raise children.”
Also in 2013, Alec sat down with the late stage and screen veteran Elaine Stritch, who, among many famous roles, played his mother Colleen Donaghy on 30 Rock. Stritch spoke to Alec about her transition from the Sacred Heart Convent and finishing school to finding herself in the New York theater classes sitting between Walter Matthau and Marlon Brando. She performed for nearly 70 years and throughout her career, Stritch comments, "I was the funny kind of offbeat girl. I was never the romantic lead.”
Produced by WNYC in the USA.
Acquired for BBC Radio 4 Extra. First heard on the Here’s The Thing podcast in 2014.

Series 1
How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin
Rhinos and horses have much in common. John Hutchinson studies both, but just don't ask to look inside his freezer.

FRI 06:30 The Life Sub-Aquatic (b04fzc7m)
Marine biologist and avid scuba diver, Helen Scales, explores the human obsession with inhabiting the depths and meets aquanauts who want to go down and stay down. From Jules Verne to Jacques Cousteau, the dream of a life sub-aquatic has endured. But could it ever become a reality?
At the moment, there is one place on Earth where you can live deep underwater for weeks at a time: The Aquarius Reef Base, a research station run by Florida International University which sits on the seabed some 20 metres down. As Helen discovers herself on a short visit to Aquarius, this is paradise for marine scientists who can wave goodbye to the surface and conduct experiments in situ, 24/7. It also hosts astronauts who use the unique conditions to train for life on the International Space Station as well as voyages deeper into space. Helen talks to Commander Chris Hadfield (recently made famous through his rendition of Space Oddity) about his time testing space suits for NASA and meeting sharks face to face on night time sorties.
Aquarius stands alone today but the dream of working – and living – under the sea has a rich history that began years before we ever stepped foot on the surface of the moon. It was undersea pioneer Jacques Cousteau, co-inventor of the Aqua-Lung, who captured the world's imagination when he created the Conshelf underwater village in the Red Sea. This was followed by the US Navy's Sea Lab and NASA's own 'Tektite' house (built in 1969 by General Electric and described by inhabitant Sylvia Earle as looking like a giant kitchen appliance).
Interest from philanthropists, corporations and even individuals is keeping alive the dream of life as an aquanaut. Helen meets Lloyd Godson, a young Australian adventurer who is working on his third project - BioSub 3 - a submerged habitat powered by sustainable energy. As Helen discovers, there's a long way to go to meet the many challenges this hostile environment throws up - not least how our bodies and our brains cope with the pressure and confined conditions that come with living underwater.
Producer: Helen Scales
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in September 2014.

False Positives
A sitcom set in the Office of Local and National Statistics which, depending on who you ask, is either where the real power of government resides, or the place where fun goes to die.
In this episode, a stag do, a stats conference and a blood test combine to make Graham’s life substantially worse.

Appointing himself chief morale officer, he sets out to brighten the mood at the agency with a succession of increasingly ill-advised morale-boosting schemes.
What starts with an innocuous Hawaiian shirt day soon snowballs into a team-building and bonding exercise none of the staff will ever forget.

Series 1
The Cat That Walked by Himself
Do we keep cats, or do they keep us? The myths and the mysteries of felis catus explored by Patrick Bateson and John Bradshaw.

Series 2
Alcohol
Comedian Simon Evans returns with a series about the economics of some of the goods - or bads - we are addicted to.
If you crave your daily coffee, can't get by without a cigarette, feel that mid-afternoon slump without your sugar-fix, or can't face an evening without a glass of wine, you are definitely not alone. But have you ever thought about the economics that has made your addiction possible? Who does it profit? And would you want to make some canny investments that take advantage of our human weaknesses?
Simon looks at the economics, history and health issues behind these oh-so-addictive commodities.
With the help of economics guru, More Or Less host Tim Harford and the Queen of investment know-how, Merryn Somerset-Webb, Simon walks us around the economics of these very familiar commodities and pokes fun at our relationship with them.
Written by Simon Evans, Benjamin Partridge and Andy Wolton.
Producer: Claire Jones
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in July 2015.

Continuing the award-nominated comedy drama set in Alcoholics Anonymous, written by Pete Jackson and inspired by his own road to recovery.
It follows the lives of five very different recovering alcoholics. Taking place entirely at their weekly meetings, we hear them moan, argue, laugh, fall apart, fall in love and - most importantly - tell their stories.
Simon............John Hannah
Marion...........Julia Deakin
Fiona.............Rebecca Front
Julie...............Sue Johnston
Danno............Paul Kaye
Andy..............Eddie Marsan
Writer Pete Jackson is a recovering alcoholic and has spent time in Alcoholics Anonymous. It was there he found support from the unlikeliest group of disparate souls - with one common bond. As well as offering the support he needed throughout a difficult time, AA also offered a weekly, sometimes daily, dose of hilarity, upset, heartbreak and friendship.
There are lots of different kinds of AA meetings. Love in Recovery is about meetings where people tell their stories. There are funny stories, sad stories, stories of small victories and milestones, stories of loss, stories of hope, and those stories that you really shouldn't laugh at - but still do, along with the storyteller.
