SAT 01:30 Jules Verne's Volcano (b0106tjp)
12 months after Iceland's ash cloud grounded global air transport, leading sound recordist Chris Watson reveals the secrets of one of Iceland's more literary but no less famous volcanoes.
A boyhood Jules Verne fan, Chris will retrace the steps of Professor and Axel Lidenbrock from Reykjavik to his favourite place in the world - Snaefellsjokull - the glacier that contains the passage to the Centre of the Earth in Verne's 1864 seminal work of science-fiction.
Along the way he'll encounter communities affected by the 2010 eruptions of Eyjafjallajokull, talking to people who live within this geologically charged environment and meeting artists and musicians who have been inspired by their volcanic landscape.
Tying in with Verne's theme of geographical exploration, to reach Snaefellsjokull - known to locals simply as Jules Verne's Volcano - Chris will travel through one of Iceland's most beautiful National Parks and will use his extraordinary recording techniques to reveal the natural sounds of this unique environment. The sounds of bubbling mud pools and sulphurous springs mirroring Jules Verne's deep connection to the physical world.
Revealing interviews with leading figures from Iceland's vibrant arts scene: including the keyboardist of Sigur Ros and best-selling Icelandic author Andri Snaer Magnason will combine with Chris's recordings as he creates his own sonic adventure in the shadow of Jules Verne's novel and Iceland's volcanoes.

Home Away From Home - The Somalis of Bute Street, Cardiff
Amidst all the coverage of contemporary migration to Britain, it is easy to forget the older generations of immigrants from across the world who have settled here and made Britain their home.
In this series, Mike Berlin, an urban historian from Birkbeck College, University of London, visits individual streets at the heart of such communities, to hear the stories of earlier immigrants - their arrival, their early lives and their observations on Britain today.
In this episode, Mike meets the Somalis of Bute Street, Cardiff.
At the end of the 19th century many working on the steam ships of the British Empire was an attractive career choice for seamen from Somaliland. Many came to Cardiff, found work in the docks heaving the coal that powered those ships, and the first settled in Butetown in 1890.
A vibrant community grew, centred on the docks and the mosque. But the last coal was shipped out in the 1960s, Cardiff docks are not what they were and Butetown has been redeveloped - and work is scarce.
The older generation of Somalis has, in recent years, been joined by new immigrants, refugees from their war-torn homeland. Their experiences and expectations are very different, as 'De Gabay' recently made clear. This was a day-long production with National Theatre Wales, in which young poets from the Somali community performed all around Butetown.
The Somalis whose families have lived in Butetown for a century, and more recent arrivals tell their stories, too.

The late journalist Deborah Orr was born and bred in the Scottish steel town of Motherwell, in the west of Scotland. Growing up the product of a mixed marriage, with an English mother and a Scottish father, she was often a child on the edge of her working class community, a 'weird child', who found solace in books, nature and in her mother's company. But her mother's shadow was long and often controlling - Deborah was not always mothered well.
In her powerful and poignant memoir, Deborah Orr explores the effects of her strict parenting and her own strong desire for independence and autonomy which led her to flee her roots, first to St Andrews University, with mixed results, and then to her hugely successful career as a journalist and writer in London. She also paints a vivid portrait of the place and the community around the steel works of Ravenscraig - the hub of her world in the sixties and seventies.

First House
Does anyone stay in one place anymore?
Statistically, moving house is one of the most stressful things we do in our lives - whether finding somewhere to live, moving in, moving out - we leave traces of ourselves scattered in kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, flat shares, student lodgings and childhood homes.
Would you like the chance to go back ? To see who lives in your old bedroom, what colours the walls are painted and which posters are stuck up with blue tack? Or what has happened to the swirly hall carpet your parents laid?
In this series, Jude Rogers travels back in time, to visit the places that she's called home over nearly 4 decades - a journey through front doors, differently configured living rooms, extended bedrooms places shared with family, friends, boyfriends and most recently, her husband and child.
Some surprises are in store, as buildings change dimension in her memory, moments of joy and tragedy return, and a sense of continuity is found. Gentrification, shifting social movements and nostalgia, all observed with a candid and personal eye.
This opening episode, finds Jude nervously approaching the house she lived on a new-build estate in Wales, where she lived up to the age of 5. The garage is gone, the back garden built on... but then she steps inside to find...?

MON 06:30 Who Was Joyce Hatto? (b00tt6f6)
In June 2006, the death was announced of the pianist Joyce Hatto. She was heralded as a great lost genius of classical music- a reclusive woman who almost never performed in public, but who in later life had created sublime recordings in private.
A few months later it emerged that those recordings were fake- lifted from other performers and tweaked in the studio - which leaves a question hanging.
Biographer Anne Sebba sets out to discover: 'Who was Joyce Hatto?'
'In the final few years of her life, she released a huge range of CD recordings which swamped the market and were praised to the hilt by a select band of reviewers,' says Anne, 'I remember thinking, Where had this amazing talent been all these years'?
Then, after a pile of glowing obituaries, which told of her four decade battle with cancer, these recordings of the pianist Joyce Hatto were branded as fake - copies of commercial recordings made by other artists, - not by Joyce at all.
Joyce's husband, William Barrington Coupe, the sound engineer for her recordings, said that he alone was to blame for the deception- acting purely out of love, and replacing passages of his wife's playing with other artists.
But behind the final deception, there is an intriguing story of an incredibly talented pianist marred by ill-health.
The conductor George Hurst talks about working with Joyce in the early 1960s. The novelist Rose Tremain recalls Joyce as an inspirational piano teacher. The critic Lewis Foreman remembers an extraordinary performance at Guildford.

MON 14:15 A History of the Infinite (b07vngh2)
Horror of the Infinite
Adrian Moore starts his journey through philosophical thought on infinity over the last two and a half thousand years.
In the first episode, he finds out why the idea made the Greeks so uncomfortable and introduces us to some of the first great thinkers on infinity.
We meet Pythagoras and his followers who divided the world into two fundamental cosmic principles. On one side was everything they thought of as limited or finite, and therefore good, and on the other everything they considered unlimited or infinite, and therefore bad.
The Pythagoreans thought they could explain the world around them in terms of the numbers - 1, 2, 3, 4, etc - which we use to count finite collections of things, and they were utterly dismayed when they discovered that not every calculation produced the neat answer they expected. According to legend, one of their number was shipwrecked at sea for revealing this discovery to their enemies!
And we meet Zeno of Elea who, after wrestling with the notion of infinity, came to the conclusion that movement itself was impossible.

These are fictional composites of the writer’s own words and Chekhov’s actual letters from the volume Dear Writer, Dear Actress: The Love Letters of Anton Chekhov and Olga Knipper, translated by Jean Benedetti.

TUE 14:15 A History of the Infinite (b07vq2zc)
Aristotle’s Rapprochement
In the second part of his journey through two and half millennia of philosophical thought, Adrian Moore introduces us to the Greek philosopher, Aristotle, who attempted a reconciliation between the idea of things going on for ever and ever and the Greeks’ abhorrence of the very notion.
We hear how he came up with the idea of two different types of infinite - the potential and the actual - and how it was the potential infinite that he presented as the acceptable face of infinity.
With the help of Ursula Coope, Professor of Ancient Philosophy at Oxford University, Adrian explains the idea of infinite divisibility and re-visits the paradoxes of Zeno which suggest that motion isn’t possible. He carries out his own experiment to see whether using Aristotle’s theory of the infinite he can disprove Zeno’s conclusions and actually get himself home.
And he reveals how Aristotle’s theory of the infinite held sway for thousands of years, despite the challenges to it.

St Brigid of the Curragh
Aisling Bea and Yasmine Akram give props to Aisling's place of birth with the story of how Brigid became a Saint - and got land to build her convent in the Curragh of Kildare.
Series two of the duo's unique comedic, highly irreverent take on Irish folklore.
Still the very best pals, Aisling and Yasmine take their role explaining Irish legends to the British nation very seriously indeed. That said, it would appear that they haven't had the time to do much research, work out who is doing which parts, edit out the chat or learn how to work the sound desk.
With a vast vault of fantastical myths, mixed with 21st century references to help you along, prepare for some very silly lessons in life, love and the crazy shenanigans of old Ireland and modern Irish.

WED 06:30 I've Played in Every Toilet (b03trs7b)
John Harris visits some of Britain's surviving small music venues and asks what will happen if they disappear altogether.
All over the UK, small music venues are threatened with closure, or have already gone out of business. Many of them have hosted gigs by truly legendary names and were once securely built into the so-called 'toilet circuit', which allowed promising musicians to take their first tentative steps on the national stage. Without them, we may not have heard from Coldplay, Oasis, Blur - or such contemporary talents as The Vaccines and Mumford and Sons. But crushed by powerful landlords and the rising expectation that music - whether live or recorded - should be free, these places are struggling as never before.
John's journey takes in The Forum in Tunbridge Wells, once an actual public toilet, which has survived over the last 20 years because the volunteers that run it haven't profited from the business. He also travels to Hull to visit the Adelphi Club, a semi-detached house on one of the city's residential streets which has hosted bands such as Pulp, Green Day and Radiohead. Manager Paul Jackson says things have been tougher than ever for the venue, but he's determined to carry on.
Finally John visits Newport, once home to the legendary TJ's where Kurt Cobain famously proposed to Courtney Love. Speaking to the daughter of the former owner John Sicolo and Nicky Wire from Manic Street Preachers, he finds out what happens when a town loses its beloved venue.
He also speaks to BBC DJ Steve Lamacq and journalist Kate Mossman to consider how - without these venues run on a mix of hope and blind faith - we will discover the next generation of musicians.

WED 14:15 A History of the Infinite (b07vs3d0)
The Infinite and the Divine
Adrian Moore reaches the third stage of his journey through thought about infinity, describing how the church attempted to stamp its authority on the debate and how that led to some explosive disagreements amongst medieval thinkers.
With the help of Cecilia Trifogli, Lecturer in Medieval Philosophy at Oxford University, Adrian finds out about the life of St Thomas Aquinas. Aquinas defied his mother to become a Dominican friar – she had hoped for a career in the more prestigious Benedictine order for him – and, more importantly, he attempted to engineer a reconciliation between the theories of Aristotle on the infinite and the doctrines of the Catholic church.
He was successful up to a point and, once the church had embraced Aristotle’s teachings as the new orthodoxy, philosophers stepped out of line at their peril. The famous dissenter and innovator, Galilei Galileo, did just that. He dared to add his contradictory views to the debate and introduced a series of paradoxes which foreshadowed much later thinking on infinity.
Adrian presents us with a vivid picture of the clash between theology and Greek philosophy, and a sense of the ongoing struggle of both to understand the infinite.

THU 06:30 The Power of Om (b012mzsp)
Reverend Richard Coles explores the world of spiritual sound and meditation and tries to understand what it is about certain sounds and chants which gives practitioners a sense of proximity to the Divine.
He tunes into the Om, a sacred sound in several religions including Hinduism, Sikhism, Jainism and Buddhism and its vibration is believed by many to be healing. He speaks to the director of the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, Shaunaka Rishi Das, who states that meditation is something we all do from childhood, for example when we are focusing on something we want to buy and how to get it or when we kiss, but that it can be used for greater ends.
Richard meets neuroscientist Dr Alan Watkins of Imperial College who has worked with the Dalai Lama and his team in Tibet and found that people who meditate together showed signs of "entrainment" in their brain activity, the same phenomenon that allows flocks of birds or shoals of fish to move together. Is this the sense of "one-ness" people talk about when meditating?
Expert in comparative religion Martin Palmer suggests that there is nothing inherently sacred about chanting, but that is a trick whose powers can be harnessed by despots as well as for good.
Jem Finer of The Pogues, writer of their greatest hit Fairytale of New York, talks about his Longplayer project, a musical composition based on the meditative sound of Tibetan singing bowls and designed to play continuously for 1000 years.
Richard also hears from the nuns at Saint Cecilia's Abbey on the Isle of Wight, who sing Gregorian chant every day in its original form. What does the power of the Mother Note in Gregorian chant have in common with the mantra recitations of the Hindu tradition?

THU 11:00 Here's the Thing (m000dz4l)
Jerry Seinfeld
Alec Baldwin sits down with comedian Jerry Seinfeld who debuted on HBO in 1981, going on to star in the global comedy hit series, Seinfeld.
Award-winning actor Alec Baldwin gives the listener unique entrée into the lives of artists, policy makers and performers. Alec sidesteps the predictable by taking listeners inside the dressing rooms, apartments, and offices.
Jerry Seinfeld was just 27 when he first appeared on Johnny Carson in 1981. And he stood out. His material wasn't about his upbringing or personal relationships. It was about our universal experience of small things. His unique comedy style eventually led him to create his namesake show with Larry David. After Seinfeld ran for nine seasons, he decided to go back to stand-up, and to his audience. As he explains to Alec, Seinfeld feels uniquely connected to his fans: “You have this relationship with the audience that is private between you and them.”
Here's the Thing has its roots in public radio. In 2009, Alec joined with producers Lu Olkowski, Trey Kay, Kathie Russo, and Emily Botein to find fresh ways to engage in conversation on the radio. The group developed the idea of a new show that at its heart would look at what makes interesting people tick and create a platform for new and emerging ideas to be presented.
From WNYC Studios, New York. First heard in the USA in 2014.

THU 14:15 A History of the Infinite (b07vs3y4)
The Infinite and Human Experience
Adrian Moore brings us to the verge of the modern world and the way we think now. He leaves the arguments of the medieval church and renaissance thinkers behind and steps into the world of enlightenment philosophy, as heralded by Rene Descartes.
Adrian tells us that Descartes was a typical enlightenment philosopher, seeking to establish what understanding we can have of the infinite using our own finite intellectual resources. How can we have any sense of infinity, if we have no direct experience of it?
Adrian describes Descartes’ attempts to establish a secure foundation for his beliefs, beginning with his questioning of his own existence and then of the existence of God.
We also meet the British empiricists who took issue with Descartes, and finally Immanuel Kant, who believed that each human being is of infinite worth.
The soundtrack is Beethoven’s eighth string quartet, which is said to have been inspired by Kant’s vision of our place as human beings in the universe.

FRI 06:30 When Garry Met Tony (b03vtcwl)
BBC Radio 4's "Today" sports presenter Garry Richardson has a secret passion - Big Band. An even greater secret passion is to sing with one.
But Big Band is a dying art whose future depends on a few old timers determined to keep the art alive. Garry meets one of them, Tony Douglas, the charismatic 84-year-old leader of a legendary amateur band who invites Garry to train for the headline vocal spot at their next big booking.
We join Garry as he explores the future of Big Band while on the bumpy road towards vocal stardom. Garry issued a challenge on Radio 4's Saturday Live: "Find me a Big Band for me to sing Frank Sinatra with". Responding to that challenge was Tony Douglas, who now runs the amateur Big Band at the celebrated London adult education institute Morley College - a college whose past staff members include Gustav Holst, Michael Tippett and Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Garry rehearses a Frank Sinatra hit with the Morley Big Band. Along the way, he takes tips from singer Kurt Ellings, big band devotee Michael Parkinson and the legendary big band musician and singer Buddy Greco.
Garry also discovers more about the origins of big band music as dance music, sustaining Second World War morale before declining in the wake of rock and roll. But, as he finds out, the genre has not disappeared but morphed into a diverse and chameleon-like form whose future, while not certain, is fiercely defended by devotees.
The climax of the programme is when Garry finally performs at the Spice of Life jazz club in Soho. Is the man whose only claim to musical ability is playing the vibes with both hands, a second Sinatra?

FRI 14:15 A History of the Infinite (b07vwh0m)
The Mathematics of the Infinitely Small
Having looked at the infinite in philosophical and theological terms, it’s time to view it through the lens of mathematics. In the fifth programme in his series, Adrian Moore introduces us to the pivotal role mathematics has played in the quest to understand the infinite.
He begins by enlisting the help of very modern technology and considering the real question put by an 11 year old boy - what is zero divided by zero?
That’s the trigger for Adrian’s investigation of the calculus – the tool we use to reckon with very small quantities. It plays a huge part in many aspects of modern-day design, medicine and statistical work, but what is less well-known is the seventeenth century row between two eminent scientists as to who actually invented it. Adrian meets science writer, Brian Clegg, to find out about the race to claim credit.
It didn’t just cause a storm at its inception - we hear about the disagreements that dogged the calculus’s early days, with the church too getting involved in the disputes about the infinitely small.
But as Adrian discovers, the quest to understand the infinite has left us with a branch of mathematics of unparalleled importance.
