Lucy Ash travels to Valentina's hometown Yaroslavl, on Moscow's Golden Ring, in search of the person behind the legend, meeting her daughter, workmates and relatives.

Sweet Caress: The Many Lives of Amory Clay
Episode 10
As her health declines, Amory wonders whether to continue.
William Boyd's novel follows one remarkable woman through the decades of the 20th century.
In 1915, Amory’s uncle unknowingly sets her life on its course when he gives her a Kodak Brownie No 2 as a present for her seventh birthday, igniting a lifelong passion for photography. Her camera will take her from high society London in the 1920s to the cabaret clubs and brothels of inter-war Berlin; to 1930s New York, the Blackshirt riots in London’s East End, and to France and Germany during the Second World War, where she becomes one of the first female war photographers.
She eventually comes to rest on a remote Scottish island, where she drinks, writes and looks back on a personal life that has been just as rich and complex as her professional one. She remembers the men that have been closest to her – her father, her brother, her lovers – irreparably scarred by two world wars, and reflects upon her own experiences of conflict and loss, passion and joy.

Finding themselves in the same situation, both women must make life-changing decisions.
Conclusion of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's beguiling story of two English women living in India more than 50 years apart.
In 1923, Olivia is unhappily married to a civil servant. Her step-granddaughter travels to the subcontinent years later to investigate Olivia's life, which her family regarded as ‘something dark and terrible’.
The story centres on the experiences of two very different women in pre- and post- Independence India. One is circumscribed by English mores and the formal social structures of the Raj while the other is free to fall in love, live among Indian people, feel part of the culture. SAT 07:30 The Voices of... (b07v07p8)
Ian Partridge
A portrait of the English lyric tenor Ian Partridge, in his own words and recordings.
It's not difficult to identify something classically, characteristically English about the lyric tenor Ian Partridge - his reticence and modesty, his boy chorister background and acclaimed performances of composers such as Roger Quilter, Benjamin Britten and Prince Albert.
He still lives in the same part of south London where he was born in 1938 and he spent over 50 years in a musical partnership with his sister, the pianist Jennifer Partridge. But the refined, passionate quality of Ian's voice has been a passport into other worlds - touring internationally, collaborating with celebrated composers and recording definitive interpretations of, for example, Schubert's Die schöne Müllerin, Schumann's Dichterliebe and Ralph Vaughan Williams' On Wenlock Edge.
Ian reflects on a lifetime in music that began lying under the family piano as his mother played popular songs of the 1930s and 40s and led ultimately to being appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

The conversations are being gathered across the UK by teams of producers from local and national radio stations who facilitate each encounter. Every conversation - they're not BBC interviews, and that's an important difference - lasts up to an hour, and is then edited to extract the key moment of connection between the participants. Most of the unedited conversations are being archived by the British Library and used to build up a collection of voices capturing a unique portrait of the UK in the second decade of the millennium. Alice Walker
From Beethoven to Stevie Wonder.
Award-winning author, poet, feminist and activist, Alice Walker shares her castaway choices with Kirsty Young
Her novel The Color Purple brought Alice worldwide attention and acclaim. The story of a poor black girl surviving in the deep American south, between the wars, it's a landmark work, disturbing and exhilarating in equal measure.
If one subscribes to the idea that "art is a wound turned to light", then Alice Walker's early life proved crucial to her future creations. Shot and blinded in one eye by her brother's BB gun it was through the isolation of her injury that she began to write. She once described poetry as "medicine".
She has also said, "I know the world's a mess, but there's so much that's gorgeous in it. I wish everybody could have what I have."
Producer: Cathy Drysdale.

MON 06:30 Ivy Benson: Original Girl Power (b04lp3x7)
Melanie Chisholm celebrates the musical legacy of British band leader Ivy Benson - who rose to fame in the 1940s with Her All Girl Band - and speaks to some of the surviving members from that era.
Ivy Benson was a gutsy and glamourous woman. 50 years before Melanie was shouting about Girl Power as a member of The Spice Girls, Ivy her band members were risking their lives entertaining Allied troops in war-torn Europe and fighting their very own battle of the sexes back at home.
She was born in Holbeck, Leeds in 1913 and formed her all girl band in 1939 in an attempt to address the inequalities in pay between male and female musicians. Within a few years, Ivy rose to become one of the Britain's best known band leaders with bookings 52-weeks-a-year at top venues including the London Palladium.
In 1943, Ivy won a prestigious contract to become one of the BBC's resident dance bands. This appointment caused controversy in the male dominated musical establishment and led to what became known as The Battle of the Saxes. The Band Leaders Section of the Musicians' Union even sent a delegation to Broadcasting House to complain about Ivy's appointment.
"Speaking from personal experience, I find it incredibly inspiring to hear of Ivy's story. It seems a real shame she isn't better known to my generation. I hope this programme goes a little way to change that. She certainly was the originator of Girl Power!" (Melanie Chisholm).
Contributors include Joyce Clark, June Smith, Margaret Chappell, Gloria Russell, Sylvia England and Patsy O'Hara, who were all members of Ivy's band during its heyday of the 1940s.

MON 14:00 Sylvia Plath - The Bell Jar (b01qhqpn)
Episode 1
Sylvia Plath's haunting and only novel tells the story of Esther Greenwood, a talented girl with a prestigious internship on a magazine in New York in 1953.
With dreams of becoming a writer and an impressive track record of scholarships and prizes, Esther seems to have it all - and knows she should be 'having the time of her life'. But between the cocktail parties and the piles of manuscripts, unsatisfactory men and the choices ahead, she finds herself spiraling into confusion and depression. As she retreats from the world in despair, she will attempt suicide and find herself in the world of the asylum before finding a way through.
The Bell Jar is both darkly funny and acutely observed, capturing in vivid and witty prose the society Plath inhabited in the 1950s. A modern classic, it's a powerful portrait of a clever young woman with great and varied ambitions, confounded by the hurdles the world puts in her way, as relevant today as when it was written.
Sylvia Plath was born in 1932 in Boston. She studied at Smith College and Cambridge where she met and married Ted Hughes. In 1960 she published The Colossus, a collection of poems. The Bell Jar was published in 1963, under a pseudonym and is Plath's only novel. Her Collected Poems were published in 1981 and won the Pulitizer Prize for poetry. Plath died in 1963.

Queens of Noise: Get It On
Episode 1
It's 1989. All-girl band Velveteens are high on champagne and excitement as they sign their first record deal. Are they on the road to be wannabe flops or Top of the Pops?
Music industry veterans Louise Wener and Roy Boulter draw on their experiences to tell the story of a young band about to get their big break.
Back in 2012, BBC Radio 2 broadcast a pilot music drama 'Shout to the Top', the brainchild of the station's Head of Music, Jeff Smith. Writers Roy Boulter (drummer with The Farm) and Louise Wener (ex-Sleeper) came on board to ensure that the drama was founded on a genuine knowledge of the music business. Taking care of the music were successful producers Brian Rawling (Bowie, Kylie, Cher, Craig David, One Direction and more) and Marky Bates (Faithless, Dido).
And so were born Velveteens, an all-girl band desperate to make it in the days before the digital revolution changed the music business forever.
Migrating to BBC Radio 4, this series picks up the story as the band signs to a major record company. Now sharing a flat and with only pennies in their pockets, the three young band members embark on a roller coaster ride on the road to who-knows-where. Calling the shots is their new manager, Sam Shephurst.

The Story of Alice
Episode 1
On 4th July 1862, Lewis Carroll is on a river trip with the three Liddell girls and tells them a fairy-tale about a little girl called Alice.
Read by Simon Russell Beale.
Where did Alice stop and ‘Alice’ begin?
Wonderland is part of our cultural heritage – a shortcut for all that is beautiful and confusing; a metaphor used by artists, writers and politicians for 150 years.
But beneath the fairy tale lies the complex history of the author and his subject. The story of Charles Dodgson the quiet academic, and his second self Lewis Carroll – storyteller, innovator and avid collector of child-friends. And also of his dream-child Alice Liddell, and the fictional alter ego that would never let her grow up.
This is their secret history - one of love and loss, of innocence and ambiguity, and of one man’s need to make Wonderland his refuge in a rapidly changing world.
Drawing on previously unpublished material, Robert Douglas-Fairhurst traces the creation and influence of the Alice books against a shifting cultural landscape – the birth of photography, changing definitions of childhood and sexuality, and the tensions inherent in the transition between the Victorian and modern worlds.

TUE 06:30 Tales From the Digital Archive (b010m9sw)
Once a writer's archive consisted of letters, badly-typed first drafts and corrected manuscripts. But now they write on computers and communicate by email, what clues to their creative process remain?
Archaeologist Christine Finn sets out to explore how the new generation of archive from the digital age will be made accessible to future generations.
She hears from Erika Farr, the Coordinator for Digital Archives at Emory University in America, which recently acquired Salman Rushdie's archive. It is a definitive 21st century archive, including emails, discs, and the computers on which he wrote his best-selling books.
Meanwhile the British Library is also addressing the digital challenge with their first-ever Curator of Digital Manuscripts, Jeremy John, who explains how they're developing a 21st century approach to the preservation of the writer's environment. Instead of having to travel to Ted Hughes' Devon home to view his work-place, devotees will be able to access a digital reconstruction of his study via th BL website.
Christine also discusses the impact of technology on the art of archiving the work of writers and poets with novelist Fay Weldon, exploring how these developments affect authors, their readers, and potential biographers. She hears from Margaret Atwood's biographer, Professor Nathalie Cooke, Associate Provost of McGill University in Montreal, and from Bobby Friedman, who has written an unofficial biography of politician John Bercow.
The traditional lament is the loss of data, as email replaces letters and drafts disappear with the delete key. But here Finn celebrates the new technology that is as much a part of an archive as the words themselves.

Ramesh Mahju has built it up over the course of over 30 years and is a firmly entrenched, friendly presence in the local area. He is joined by his shop sidekick, Dave.
Then of course there are Ramesh's sons Sanjay and Alok, both surly and not particularly keen on the old school approach to shopkeeping, but natural successors to the business. Ramesh is keen to pass all his worldly wisdom onto them - whether they like it or not!

TUE 14:00 Sylvia Plath - The Bell Jar (b01qklrw)
Episode 2
Things don't go so well after the Ladies Day Lunch - and Esther remembers the first time Buddy Willard kissed her, at the Yale Junior Prom.

The Story of Alice
Episode 2
Following publication of his two Alice books, Lewis Carroll continues to collect ‘child-friends’. The fashionable watering-hole of Eastbourne is his destination of choice.
Where did Alice stop and 'Alice' begin?
Wonderland is part of our cultural heritage – a shortcut for all that is beautiful and confusing; a metaphor used by artists, writers and politicians for 150 years.
But beneath the fairy tale lies the complex history of the author and his subject. The story of Charles Dodgson the quiet academic, and his second self Lewis Carroll – storyteller, innovator and avid collector of child-friends. And also of his dream-child Alice Liddell, and the fictional alter ego that would never let her grow up.
This is their secret history - one of love and loss, of innocence and ambiguity, and of one man's need to make Wonderland his refuge in a rapidly changing world.

WED 06:30 What's Eating The Museum? (b013q311)
Chris Ledgard hears how museums are waging war against the insect pests threatening their collections.
Anyone who has had a bad infestation of moths in their wardrobe knows the misery they cause.
But clothes - though expensive - can at least be replaced. For museum conservators, moth and beetle larvae pose a more serious threat. An insect infestation in a museum collection can destroy artefacts which are not only valuable but also irreplaceable.
Conservators explain the quandary they find themselves in: insect populations - particularly clothes moths - have increased rapidly in recent years. At the same time, chemical pesticides have been taken off the market because of safety fears. So the people responsible for our great natural history, ethnographic and costume collections find themselves in a continual battle to keep the insects at bay.
Guru of insect pest management, David Pinniger, takes us around the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford to see how conservators there are coping.
Chris Ledgard also visits the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Museum of London, and Dover Castle. And what's the secret to winning this war? It's simple, says David Pinniger - good housekeeping. And you have to learn to think like a moth.

Corporal Hernadez left the US Infantry in 2006, and considers himself pretty sorted out; but he still gets jumpy hearing fireworks on the 4th of July.
It's Veteran's Day in California. It's a day to celebrate returning heroes, and in true Hollywood style, Arnold Schwarzenegger is giving the address. Can Obama succeed in his plan to avert a human crisis as a flood of newly discharged soldiers, carrying with them the trauma of war, re-enter an economy in recession?

Episode 4
Buddy offers something new and Esther meets a woman-hater.

The Story of Alice
Episode 4
Lewis Carroll develops the story and finds a publisher for his fairy-tale about a little girl called Alice. Now all he needs is a suitable title for the book.

FRI 06:30 Chant (b04lpzz2)
Richard Coles delves into the 1990's when a recording of Benedictine monks singing became so popular it sold in the millions around the world.
If an album of classical music sold anywhere near one million copies at that time, it was considered unusual. For one to sell more than that was unprecedented. Adding further to this phenomenon was the fact that this was unfamiliar music at the time, Gregorian Chant, performed not by celebrity artists who might attract a large following, but by monks from a remote corner of Northern Spain. EMI marketed this album Canto Gregoriano, or Chant as it was named in Amercia, as a unique antidote to stress.
Richard Coles with former EMI employees Kick Klimbie and Jane McCann, retrace EMI's marketing tactics in the promotion of Canto Gregoriano. Professor Adrian North will also be providing insights throughout the programme into the psychology of marketing, exploring what drives people to buy certain things, and how music can impact upon us physically and emotionally.
Richard Coles also takes a trip to the Isle of Wight, where Gregorian Chant is still an important aspect of life at both St Cecilia's Abbey and Quarr Abbey, and questions whether such music is still capable of having any meaning or impact upon our lives in the twenty-first century.
Producer: Luke Whitlock.

Series 1
Episode 1
A satirical river of sound and a platform for diverse new talent, this is topical satire like you’ve never heard it before. A new open-door comedy for a fresh generation of satirists who don’t write sketches, jokes and one liners, but instead channel their talents into playing around with sound.
Following an award-winning pilot and an award nominated Halloween Brexit special, the "disorentating, dizzying, dazzling" Skewer returns for a full series.
"A freeform assault on the senses.. deeply haunting..an eerily beautiful discombobulating mosaic of spin" - comedy.co.uk
Creator and producer Jon Holmes curates contributions from brand new and diverse talent in a show where the experience is enhanced through headphones, attaching the listener to a late night drip of current events as they melt into the brain, evoking a feeling of drifting off, but with the occasional uncomfortable sleep-twitch.
Sketch-writing has long been the way into radio comedy but, for the new generation of satirists who don’t put pen to paper and instead beaver away on laptops using self-taught skills to toy with the news-scape, The Skewer's guerrilla approach to satire is their new playground.

The Story of Alice
Episode 5
Oxford gossip is catching up with Lewis Carroll. And while the ‘real’ Alice begins married life in a grand Georgian country house, he remains an object of fascination at Christ Church.
