SAT 00:30 Last Orders (b00qpslw)
Episode 1
A celebration of the pub landlord and landlady.
With pubs disappearing at the rate of more than three a day , signalling one of the most rapid cultural shifts of recent times, half a dozen landlords and landladies reflect on life as a licensee and explore what we're in danger of losing besides the beer and the buildings.
This rueful view from behind the bar includes reflections on the qualities of a good landlord or landlady; their role as community confessional and settler of tap room fights, dispenser of best bitter and pearls of wisdom.
We hear from old hands like Barbara, an ex-Bunny girl who runs the Grapes in London's Limehouse; Tetley Dave who fought a battle to keep the Shoulder of Mutton from closing in Castleford; Maureen from the Waggon and Horses at Langsett who's famous for her pies ; ex miner Dennis from Barnsley, whose concern is health and safety; stand-up comedian Toby- who recalls lining up six pints apiece for the miners coming off shift at his auntie's pub in a Yorkshire pit village ; and former Cambridge academic Tim, who's taken early retirement to open his first pub in York - the Pheonix- just as many others are shutting up shop.
How have these landlords and landladies kept their marriages together , living and working on the premises? How much of a tempatation was it to hit the top shelf and go for the optics after a hard day's graft behind the bar? Why do they think the pub can teach the next generation how to hold their drink .And how do they handle an objectionable customer without starting a wild-west barroom brawl?
Producer Lindsay Leonard.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in February 2010.

SAT 02:15 A History of Britain in Numbers (b053c3pd)
Series 2
Voting
Andrew Dilnot, chair of the UK Statistics Authority (2012-2017), brings to life the numbers conveying the big trends that have transformed the shape and scope of the British state.
He looks at what governments through the centuries have spent, borrowed, taxed, regulated and built; and he considers how we came to organise a national life that reaches into every corner of private life, from the delivery of pensions and healthcare to the surveillance of emails or rules about the temperature of a hot cup of tea.
By one measure, the modern British state is roughly 7,000 times bigger than the Tudor state. How and why did that happen?
The story of the state unfolds through muddy fields, smugglers coves and a Victorian village lock-up. Numbers become sound as we hear the dramatic scale of change that has occurred over the centuries.
The evolution of the state may be driven less by party politics than party politicians might like us to think. Although the state's size and functions are a natural subject of fierce political argument, the impetus for the biggest changes has often come from another source - such as war, economic growth, and the power that arises from knowledge.
In the final programme of the series, Andrew turns his attention to enfranchisement.

Robert Wyatt
Robert Wyatt has been recognised as a prog-rock drummer, jazz composer, avant-garde cornet player, artist and activist in a wheelchair. But, above all else, he has been known by one of the most instantly recognisable and distinctive voices of the last fifty years.
Forever associated with Shipbuilding, Elvis Costello's song written in reaction to the Falklands War, Wyatt's voice and the causes he gives voice to are intricately entwined.
This intimate radio portrait, in his own words, traces Wyatt's journey from the psychedelic excesses of Soft Machine (appearing both with Jimi Hendrix and at the BBC Proms), through the life-changing accident that has confined him to a wheelchair for almost forty years, to recent celebrated musical projects that are reaching new audiences.

Mustn't Grumble: The Noble British Art of Complaining
Complaining is a vital component of British life, whether it's formal letters to a utility company, bank or broadband provider, or it's an ice-breaker at a bus stop, bemoaning the dreary weather.
Writer and broadcaster Bidisha sets out to identify why complaining is so important to us, and also precisely how we go about it.
She visits an international language school to hear how students learning English react to lessons in 'hedging' (the art of introducing a complaint with apology - "I'm terribly sorry but..", "Forgive me for mentioning it but.."); she also meets literary professor Phil Davis to track complaint through the fictional pages of history, former comedian and classicist Natalie Haynes to found out how the Ancients did it, and journalist Lynne Truss to find out why we never complain to a hairdresser.
Along the way she also meets a professional complainer, Jasper Griegson, who's sent thousands of letters of complaint over the years, sometimes in verse, sometimes in medieval script, to find out the best methods of complaining.
Bidisha also wonders, finally, whether complaining is actually good for us - whether the occasional gains we may achieve are worth so much of our energy and spirit. The programme will make use of the ample archive of complaint, from Juvenal to 'Points of View', Samuel Pepys' diaries to Alf Garnett and Tom Wrigglesworth.

As well as being the author of 14 novels, and selling more than a million books, Howard lived a richly eventful life. She walked out of her first marriage to naturalist Peter Scott, taking with her just £10, a suitcase and half a novel. She subsequently went on to remove herself from two more marriages. As her life-long friend, Jacqui Graham, points out, it was enormously brave. "Women just didn't do that."
Cathy Rentzenbrink, who presents the programme, says of Howard, 'What I find interesting is the way her life and fiction intertwines. I can't think of any other writer where the mistakes of life are transformed, reinterpreted, recycled into such brilliant novels."

SUN 09:00 Grossman's War (m000c388)
Stalingrad: Destiny of a Novel (Omnibus)
At the end of 1950 a desperate Vasily Grossman wrote to Stalin pleading for assistance in bringing his great post war novel Stalingrad to print. No answer was ever forthcoming-it would be another two years before anyone could read it.
Historian Catherine Merridale chronicles the tortuous passage to publication of Grossman’s book to reveal the insane complexities of Soviet censorship and the grim, even murderous, politics of a post war Soviet Union almost destroyed by war.
For Grossman, a hugely popular chronicler of the Soviet peoples struggle against the Nazis, the war had robbed him of his mother, brought mass murder to his fellow Soviet Jews and carried the promise of new freedoms once victory was secured. There would be no such outcome.
In the last year of the war it was announced Vasily Grossman's new project was to be a novel about the defining battle against fascism-Stalingrad. Grossman dedicated it to the 'nameless heroes who must not be forgotten'. He had already been at work on his novel for some 18 months. The next 8 years would see an increasingly maddening & deadly struggle to have his novel published. His struggle to see STALINGRAD to print coincided with the last great Stalinist purge and campaign of terror directed against Stalin’s own Jewish population. The novel underwent endless revision, censorship and criticism before first seeing print in 1952.
Through Grossman’s own tormented journey Catherine Merridale explores both the conception of a classic work of fiction - translated for the first time into English - and the turbulent, savage post war years of late Stalinism.

The Listening Project is a Radio 4 initiative that offers a snapshot of contemporary Britain in which people across the UK volunteer to have a conversation with someone close to them about a subject they've never discussed intimately before. The conversations are being gathered across the UK by teams of producers from local and national radio stations who facilitate each encounter. Every conversation - they're not BBC interviews, and that's an important difference - lasts up to an hour, and is then edited to extract the key moment of connection between the participants. Most of the unedited conversations are being archived by the British Library and used to build up a collection of voices capturing a unique portrait of the UK in the second decade of the millennium. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.
The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.
Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.

Kiwi
New Zealand had several species of flightless bird living across the islands, all of which are now extinct, bar one. The Kiwi has become one of those species iconic of the country, like the Koala to Australia, the Giraffe to Africa and the Alpaca to South America. Historically, New Zealand didn't have ground predators such as wild cats and stoats - which allowed birds to exploit living on the ground. Being flightless in New Zealand was a good way to be a bird.
Having filmed Kiwis, Sir David Attenborough muses on the niche the Kiwi occupies on the ground. He argues the Kiwi behaves more like a mammal than a bird, but what mammal do you think, in Attenborough's view, the Kiwi most resembles?

Life and Fate
Viktor and Lyuda
Viktor, a nuclear physicist, is evacuated with his family from Moscow eastwards to Kazan.
It's October 1942 and the Russians are defending Stalingrad from the ferocious attack of the Germans. Viktor has a revelatory breakthrough in his research but his wife Lyuda learns of the death of her son and her grief drives a wedge between the couple: Viktor is drawn to the kindness of Marya, the wife of his close colleague.
Kenneth Branagh and David Tennant star in Vasily Grossman’s epic saga.
Set against the ferocious Battle of Stalingrad, Grossman’s huge novel charts the fate of both a nation and a family in the turmoil of war and is increasingly seen as the most important Russian novel of the 20th century. Its comparison of Stalinism with Nazism was considered by Soviet authorities to be so dangerous that the manuscript itself was arrested.
Grossman died in 1964, never knowing that his book would be smuggled to the West and eventually published in 1980.

Plus she puts an image of Vladimir Putin in your head that you will find hard to shake.
Born in Tasmania, Hannah's first encounters with art were solely through books. When she worked in a bookshop after graduating, she realised the craze for Dan Brown's 'The Da Vinci Code' had parallels with critics' sleuth-like 'readings' of 'The Arnolfini Portrait'.

Kate Silverton uncovers the story of the English schoolgirls who were captured by pirates off the China coast, and later ended up in a Japanese concentration camp with Eric Liddell.
In 1935, the SS Tungchow was taken over by a dozen Chinese pirates as it emerged from the Yangtse River. They were expecting a cargo of gold bullion but instead found three lady teachers and seventy British missionaries' children, on their way to Chefoo boarding school on the North China coast.
Six years later, in 1941, these same children became enemy aliens when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour. They were imprisoned in the Weihsien Internment Camp, Shantung Province, along with 500 other children, half of them without parents. The morale of the girls and their teachers was greatly improved by two Brownie packs and a Girl Guide Company. Their sports were organised by Eric Liddell, (Chariots of Fire) until he died.
This is an extraordinary tale, and it's told by those who were there:

Graham Greene: The Third Man
Heard of Harry Lime?
Samuel West reads from the classic Graham Greene novella that inspired one of the most acclaimed films of all time, starring Orson Welles.
In this episode, as snow falls on a ravaged postwar Vienna, penniless pulp Western writer Rollo Martins arrives, hoping to meet his old school chum and hero, Harry Lime. But why isn't Harry there to greet him? Rollo is about to learn the first of many shocking truths about his greatest friend...
Greene's novella was published the year after the film, The Third Man, was released, but formed the basis of Greene's screenplay. The Oscar-wining film, directed by Carol Reed, is now considered a masterpiece, and was chosen by the BFI as the best British film of the 20th century in 1999.
Author: Graham Greene, 1904-91, is one of the most acclaimed and most popular writers of the 20th century. He won several awards for his work including the 1948 James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Ethan Frome is one of Edith Wharton's most enduring and powerful stories.
Set against the cold, grey, bleakness of a New England winter. Ethan Frome scrapes a living from his woodlot whilst trapped in an unhappy marriage with his hypochondriac wife, Zeena. A ray of light enters Ethan's life when his wife's cousin Mattie arrives to help. His life is transformed as he falls in love with Mattie but their fate is determined by their circumstances and the stifling conventions of the time.
Ethan Frome was deemed shocking when first published as it appeared to condone infidelity. What many readers did not know was that many of the novella's themes mirrored real events in the life of Edith Wharton. Her own story is told in an accompanying play 'The Jinx Element' that explores her own sexless marriage and a passionate affair that begun when she was 47.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in January 2012.

When a man called Noah invites you on a boat trip...
Teresa Gallagher reads Kathleen Winter's story of her journey as the Writer-in-Residence on a boat travelling through the Northwest Passage, and how the voyage became as much an exploration of her own roots as a venture into the arctic ice fields.
Kathleen Winter was born in Bill Quay, near Gateshead. When she was still young, the family emigrated to Newfoundland. Winter, who now lives in Montreal, was a TV scriptwriter and a newspaper columnist before turning her hand to short stories. Her first collection of stories - 'boYs' - was published in 2007 and her first novel 'Annabel' came out three years later.
'Annabel' was shortlisted for the three main Canadian literary prizes in 2010 - the Scotiabank Giller Prize, the Rogers' Writers' Trust Prize and the Governor General's Award. Boundless was shortlisted for the RBC Taylor Award for non-fiction.

Razia Iqbal joins the women architecture students who are planning to make a difference to the urban environment of the Gulf region.
From a western perspective, we often get the impression that the Middle East doesn't offer women much in the way of equal opportunities. But in the United Arab Emirates, women architects are helping design and build their own cities. In Abu Dhabi, for example, the Urban Planning Council has women ensuring that the built environment will cope with their needs as much as those of big business.
Razia visits the American University of Sharjah. Its College of Architecture, Art and Design has a highly respected course, and Razia joins the students on campus. What she finds remarkable is the self-confidence and enterprise of the young women who have come from all of the Middle East and North Africa and who make up the majority of the class. She'll speak to students and tutors to analyse what their futures will hold for them in the Gulf and beyond.

Tenx9 Storytelling
We turn to the truth this week, celebrating the art of live storytelling in Belfast.
The journalist Paul Doran and poet Pádraig Ó Tuama launched Tenx9 as a small monthly gathering, in the front room of the Black Box, in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter.
The event has now expanded to 15 cities, and festivals, around the world, and selected stories have featured in the BBC Radio Ulster series, Tell Tales, which is presented by Kathy Clugston.
Kathy introduces her favourite story, which recalls a young couple’s memorable night in a Parisian bistro. The other tales from the Tenx9 archives cover friendship and fear during The Troubles, a work appraisal that led to award-winning acceptance, a secret pregnancy, and a young band’s compelling live debut.
Paul and Pádraig also share a few storytelling tips and reflect upon the power of stories to promote healing and understanding.

Her own story is told in an accompanying play 'The Jinx Element' which explores her own sexless marriage and a passionate affair that begun when she was 47.

Episode 2
A Viking Funeral.

WED 06:30 The Art of Water Music (b0132p7x)
Starting with an underwater concert, Midge Ure sounds the depths of the complex relationship between music and water.
Water has fascinated classical composers, modernist musicians and contemporary sound artists alike, and in this programme Midge hears some of the extraordinary ways in which water has been represented, evoked and even used as an instrument by musicians over the centuries. It flows through an extraordinary range of pieces. Midge meets experts on water compositions by Beethoven, Wagner and Debussy and explains why Handel's Water Music is not technically speaking water music at all.
While some of the water music we know best might be classical, water continues to appeal to those working at the musical cutting edge. Midge has a go at playing a bizarre instrument called a 'waterphone' and talks to sound artist Lee Patterson as he performs a strangely hypnotic piece of 'drip music'. He also listens to recordings of the Danube by sound artist Annea Lockwood. She believes the sound of running water is itself music, raising the question of whether or not water and music are actually different at all. Water, it seems, continues to excite, mystify and intrigue, and musicians have engaged with it with whatever instruments they have had at their disposal: orchestras, pianos, and now computers.
Midge goes to meet Simon Harding who makes electronic music on his computer using the water sounds from appliances in his house, while Professor Doug James, a computer scientist at Cornell University, explains some of the science behind water's unique musicality. There is a wealth of beautiful water music already in existence as this programme shows, but water is still a vigorously flowing source of musical inspiration, even expanding our ideas of what we consider music to be.

Life and Fate: Abarchuk
Kenneth Branagh, Janet Suzman, David Tennant, Greta Scacchi, Malcolm Storry and Harriet Walter star in this eight hour dramatisation of Life and Fate by Vasily Grossman.
Set against the ferocious Battle of Stalingrad, Life and Fate is a sweeping historical tale that charts the fate of both a nation and a family in the turmoil of war and is increasingly hailed as the most important Russian novel of the 20th century. Its comparison of Stalinism with Nazism was considered by Soviet authorities to be so dangerous that the manuscript itself was arrested and Grossman was told that it would not be published for at least 200 years. He died in 1964, never knowing that his book would be smuggled to the West and eventually published in 1980.
Lyuda's ex-husband, Abarchuk, is still a staunch believer in the Party even though he was sent to a Russian labour camp some years ago. In November 1942, he assumes his son, Tolya, is fighting for the motherland and composes a letter to him about his beliefs; beliefs that may have been shaken by a recent encounter with his former mentor, Magar.

Her own story is told in the play 'The Jinx Element' which explores her own sexless marriage and a passionate affair that begun when she was 47.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in January 2012.

This year, Boundless was shortlisted for the RBC Taylor Award for non-fiction.

THU 06:30 The Legacy of Uncle Tom (b03j9lv8)
When Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin in 1852, it immediately caused a stir and created a groundswell of anti-slavery feeling. Legend has it that when Stowe visited the White House during the American Civil War, Abraham Lincoln greeted her with the words 'So you're the little woman who wrote the book that made this great war!'.
The novelist and critic Erica Wagner examines the lasting legacy of this book, from its abolitionist beginnings to the racial stereotypes Stowe's characters became. To be called an 'Uncle Tom' is one of the harshest racial slurs that can be thrown at an African-American person, and yet the idea of the submissive race traitor is quite different from Stowe's original character.
Erica explores the part that Uncle Tom's Cabin played in the politics of race in America, and how the ground that it broke, in fact, resulted in its own demise. The programme ranges from Stowe's home in Brunswick Maine, where Harriet Beecher Stowe harboured a runaway slave, to the American Antiquarian Society in Massachusetts and the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center in Connecticut, where the wealth of spin-off merchandise are explored. Joan Hedrick, who won a Pulitzer Prize for her biography Harriet Beecher Stowe: A Life sets Stowe in historical context and the award-winning choreographer Bill T Jones, and the playwright Robert Alexander bring the novel's story right up to date. The Legacy of Uncle Tom traces the reactions to this work from the Abolition Movement, through the Civil Rights Movement to the Rodney King beating in 1991 and the murder of Trayvon Martin last year. Race and politics remain at the heart of this story, as does every person's right to liberty.
Producer: Philippa Geering

THU 07:00 Ballylenon (b00yj976)
Series 8
Agroturismo in Irlande
Ballylenon, County Donegal. Pop. 1,999 was founded by St Lenon of Padua, when he fell into the river at this spot in 953. Ballylenon is situated on the shores of Lough Swilly with entrancing views of Muckish Mountain, in the Diocese of Derry and Raphoe. (Note: Ballylenon is a fictional name, but the other landmarks are identifiable.)
In this society, there exists an uneasy balance of interests. Communication has all the appearances of power, and in Ballylenon, communication means the local Telephone Exchange and Post Office. Both these are firmly in the control of sisters, Vera and Muriel McConkey, who in cahoots with hotelier and funeral undertaker, Phonsie Doherty, would seek to rule the roost in Ballylenon. However, other forces have their own guiding principles, and where the McConkey sisters and Mr Doherty, aided by The Vindicator, would dominate reactionary thinking, a dangerous liberal tendency is championed by Vivienne and Rev. Samuel Hawthorne, and the somewhat unlikely, Guard Gallagher. The antagonism between these camps is only ever thinly veiled.
In this brand new series, Christopher Fitz-Simon takes a jocose but jaundiced look at 1960's Ireland, where we discover
Muriel McConachie , 62. Spinster remnant of a family once active in politics, Muriel inherited the corner shop and, due to her Councillor father's influence, has the Post Office franchise. Known as the eyes of Ballylenon, Muriel, the Honouree Secretary of the Development Association, has a long-term 'understanding' with its Chair, Phonsie Doherty. She is a gentle personality, but misses nothing and can see a midge on a mare's arse in Tyrone.
We also discover, Vera McConachie, 61, Muriel's younger and more forthright spinster sister who runs the 10-line manual Telephone Exchange and is known as the Ears of Ballylenon. Every call goes through her switchboard, its content noted, discussed and any necessary action taken. She also writes the Horoscope anonymously for the Donegal Vindicator.
The McConkey's closest confidant is Phonsie [Alphonsus] Doherty. 58. Phonsie is a widower, proprietor of the Swilly Arms Hotel and of Doherty's Estate Agency and Funeral Furnishers and Chair of the Development Association. Up to the present is politically 'in' and therefore in the way of knowing what grants and subsidies are available for all manner of projects. His relationship with Muriel McConachie is proprietorial rather than romantic.
If there is a thorn in the side of this trio it is, Vivienne Hawthorne, 30, the former Miss Boal. Bright, breezy, busy primary schoolteacher. Organist and choir-mistress of the Presbyterian congregation. Though seemingly rationalist, Vivienne is secretly much influenced by horoscopes. She is supporter of cultural causes like the music festival and architectural conservation. And though apparently straightforward, she achieves certain aims by devious means.

ABOUT THE SERIES:
A year into married life and already things are a little creaky. So, following Will's unimaginative anniversary present (a draining rack), Annabelle has signed them up for a course of marriage counselling.
Each week, counsellor Guy mediates a recent dispute between Will and Annabelle, with flashbacks to the events that spawned the argument, and by the end, the couple find marital equilibrium once more. Sort of.
Guy arbitrates, usually leaning towards Annabelle's more sensible point of view. In contrast to Will's uptightness, Guy is laconic and urbane and clearly irritates Will.
The writer and comedian Will Smith leads the starry cast of Mr and Mrs.Smith. Will's writing credits include Armstrong and Miller (BBC1), Harry and Paul (BBC1), Moving Wallpaper (ITV1), Time Trumpet (BBC2), the multi-award winning The Thick Of It (BBC2) in which he also appears as Phil Smith, and Veep (HBO).

Unfortunately, her birth mother's recall is none too good and, despite much probing, she seems unable to remember which of her partners could be the true dad.
So, with the voices of Thom Tuck, Alex Lowe and Celia Pacqola, Deborah sets out on one last Google-driven attempt to complete the circle.

Keen to share his discovery, Marc persuades his curious friends to set sail on the very rough seas in the hope of an exhilarating encounter with these elusive creatures. As they struggle to find their sea legs our intrepid three contemplate life, the universe and the most important questions - how do you stop your glasses falling off and why shouldn't you sing to whales?

Set against the ferocious Battle of Stalingrad, Life and Fate is a sweeping historical tale that charts the fate of both a nation and a family in the turmoil of war and is increasingly hailed as the most important Russian novel of the 20th century. Its comparison of Stalinism with Nazism was considered by Soviet authorities to be so dangerous that the manuscript itself was arrested and Grossman was told that it would not be published for at least 200 years. He died in 1964, never knowing that his book would be smuggled to the West and eventually published in 1980.

Her own story is told in 'The Jinx Element' that explores her own sexless marriage and a passionate affair that begun when she was 47.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in January 2012.

Boundless
Episode 5
As the passengers prepare for journey's end, there is an unscheduled stop.
Teresa Gallagher concludes Kathleen Winter's story of her journey as the Writer-in-Residence on a boat travelling through the Northwest Passage, and how the voyage became as much an exploration of her own roots as a venture into the arctic ice fields.

Episode 2
Conclusion of a two-part celebration of the pub landlord and landlady.
With pubs disappearing at the rate of more than three a day, signalling one of the most rapid cultural shifts of recent times, half a dozen landlords and landladies reflect on life as a licensee and explore what we're in danger of losing besides the beer and the buildings.
This rueful view from behind the bar includes reflections on the qualities of a good landlord or landlady; their role as community confessional and settler of tap room fights, dispenser of best bitter and pearls of wisdom.
We hear from old hands like Barbara, an ex-Bunny girl who runs the Grapes in London's Limehouse; Tetley Dave who fought a battle to keep the Shoulder of Mutton from closing in Castleford; Maureen from the Waggon and Horses at Langsett who's famous for her pies; ex miner Dennis from Barnsley, whose bête noir is health and safety; stand-up comedian Toby- who recalls lining up six pints apiece for the miners coming off shift at his auntie's pub in a Yorkshire pit village; and former Cambridge academic Tim, who's taken early retirement to open his first pub in York - the Phoenix- just as many others are shutting up shop.
How have these landlords and landladies kept their marriages together , living and working on the premises? How much of a tempatation was it to hit the top shelf and go for the optics after a hard day's graft behind the bar? Why do they think the pub can teach the next generation how to hold their drink. And how do they handle an objectionable customer without starting a wild-west barroom brawl?
Producer Lindsay Leonard.
